Gregg Zaun Traded

Per Roch Kubatko on MASNSports.com, Zaun has been traded to the Rays for a player to be named later.

The Orioles have traded backup catcher Gregg Zaun to the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named later.

Zaun had to pass through waivers before he could be dealt.

Zaun signed a one-year deal over the winter with a team option for 2010, returning him to the organization that introduced him to the majors in 1995. He batted .244 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 56 games.

The Orioles will call up Chad Moeller from Triple-A Norfolk to take his place. Moeller, removed from the roster when Matt Wieters joined the Orioles, is batting .203 with 10 RBIs in 35 games.

Moeller can mentor the young pitchers, and assist in Wieters' development, as Zaun did.

Unlike the Chad Bradford trade to Tampa Bay, the Orioles apparently will receive a player in return for Zaun. This isn't expected to be a cash transaction.

Yay! I never liked "ZAUN"...

…but I suppose he started to hit better after The Future came up. At least he goes to a contending team. I like Moeller, but it seems like we might not get much offense out of the fellow. It would be good to get a player back this time : )

David Price would also be acceptable.

He did pretty well with Moeller in the pre-Wieters era, too.

I've always been a Zaun fan

So I’m a little sad, but this kind of marginal move just makes too much sense not to do, even if the player we get is organizational depth. I’d guess it’s also a nice thing for Zaun to be involved in a playoff hunt, even if Tampa is the dark horse in that race.

I'm no fan of the Roch commenters

But it’s almost funny reading their reactions. Many are up in arms over the impending “fire sale”. One brave soul with an actual sense of humor remarked that ZAUN is still scheduled to catch Sunday, since Trembley is apparently so inflexible about these matters.

So, what are the stipulations to a PTBNL? Is there a list of approved players agreed upon by both teams? Is there an option for one team or the other to take X number of dollars instead?

Zaun on the trade, again per Roch:
“I didn’t expect to get traded. I figured once the deadline came and went, I was going to be with the Orioles, which was fine for me because I was enjoying my job, what we signed up to do, which was play a couple times a week and be there for Wiety (Matt Wieters) when he had questions, and hopefully try to show him the way a little bit. But I’m going to Tampa, and I have a home there, so it’ll be easier for me to move right back into my house and play for a contender. It’s definitely going to be a shot of tonic, that’s for sure. I’m just excited that I’m going to be on a team that’s playing meaningful games in August and September. And it makes it even better that I get to go live in my house.”

by sickuvitall on Aug 8, 2009 2:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

maybe this is the key
what we signed up to do, which was play a couple times a week and be there for Wiety

“A couple times a week” is too much. There is no reason, no reason WHATSOEVER, for Wieters to take more than one day off a week. The less time he plays, the longer his development takes.

People have been wondering why DD was playing ZAUN so often. Maybe it had to do with this agreement between him and Gregg.

I have no doubt that Moeller will only be getting the call once a week.

Wieters playing five games every other week doesn't bother me

But Zaun was getting two games, sometimes three, every single week was a bit aggravating.

Wieters is probably pretty overwhelmed right now considering that he is a rookie, and giving him six games every single week may have been a bit much.

eh

I thought for sure Zaun was gonna be back for next year, he was doing a good job. Kinda sucks to see him go. At least hes heading to a comfortable situation in Tampa.

by UMterp08 on Aug 7, 2009 4:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm not sure I get this move

Zaun is fairly cheap, he was a decent player when playing, Wieters benefited from his mentoring, and we’ll need a backup catcher next year anyway.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m pretty much indifferent, but why move him unless the return is going to actually help us?

Eh, Moeller isn’t much different and there should be plenty of similar players available in the offseason

I'm not sure they're that similar

Zaun’s career OPS is 100 points higher than Moeller’s (its like 730, higher than I expected). This season their diff is over 100.

When I first heard about the trade I was a little disappointed, but then I figured that it meant M-dub would play more—which has basically been confirmed—and thats good.

Now, we didn’t necessarily need to lose Zaun for Man-Child to play more, but…shrug. Maybe we’ll get something for him, BP arm or something.

by U2boy417 on Aug 8, 2009 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Zaun is a lot better than Moeller. Not that we shouldn’t have done the deal, but despite his terrible start this year, Zaun is usually a pretty decent offensive catcher, which is why Tampa wanted him in the first place.

by Joltin Joe Orsulak on Aug 8, 2009 7:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yup...

i mean, he had a couple years w/ the jays where he exhibited a little pop, but he’s always had pretty solid on-base skills for a catcher. his 90 OPS+ this year was handily better than razor’s 79 w/ the reds (also the 76 posted by Wieters, but eyes on the prize, people…)

WAT

I don’t get it. I really don’t. We signed Zaun to be a mentor to young Wieters, he’s cheap (although backup catchers are a dime a dozen, not $1M/year), he supposedly was excited about playing that role, he was good enough for a backup catcher, so I really don’t get this deal.

I felt the same about the Chad Brad trade last year, a ~$2M salary dump.

Maybe he’s taking the blame for Guts’ HR parade?

The guy was a lousy player whose presence on the Orioles makes literally no difference.

If a team wants to give up a player or some money or a bunch of scuffed up baseballs for him, it would be insane not to take them up on it.
