Thursday Bird Droppings
The Canadian Press: Roberts becomes fourth player in history to hit 50 doubles for third time
In case you missed it last night, Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts is the fourth player in major league history to have three seasons with at least 50 doubles. Roberts doubled off Boston Red Sox right-hander Paul Byrd in the fifth inning Wednesday night to reach 50 for this year. Roberts then stole third - his 28th stolen base. -zk

Janet Marie Smith was NOT the architect of OPaCY
Common misperception that, unfortunately, Ms. Smith has let be perpetuated uncorrected.
Read “Ballpark” by Peter Richmond – fascinating account of how OPaCY was built, and the incredible amount of infighting that went on behind the scenes.
She was basically the project manager, and the one responsible for 3B side seats facing CF, but she wasn’t the architect.

Whatever
That’s what I inferred from the story. I was like 10 years old when that happened, so it’s not like I recall it.

I have no personal gripe with Smith...
I just don’t like it when people take credit (or allow it to be given) for stuff they didn’t do.

It's been 20 years since OPaCY was announced
May 2, 1989 the project was announced on Fantastic Fan night. Wow, two decades since we knew Memorial Stadium was coming to an end and a new place was going up!

How's this for "luck"?
My gf’s brother is coming up from New Orleans today. It’ll be his first trip to the NYC area, so he wants to see Manhattan and, you guessed it, Yankee stadium. We figured it’d be perfect because they play the O’s tomorrow. We have a buddy that got us 4 really good seats for free.
Yesterday, Jeter tied the yankees all time record for hits. Now, if Jeter can manage one hit off of chris tillman, I’ll have to sit through the most overblown standing ovation for a player’s 2,722nd hit EVER. And probably watch the O’s lose to the Yanks. C’mooooon football season…

Ugh
When they announced last night that Jeter had gotten three hits to tie the record, I REALLY hoped that he’d go ahead and get the fourth hit that night as well. I’m sorry you’ll have to be a part of that. But maybe Tillman will strike him out four times. That would make me happy as can be.

I'd be just as happy
if he gets hit 4 times. Or 5 or 6. The yanks may get more at bats then we’d like to see. In any event, I like seeing Jeter get pluncked.

With Tillman on the mound
He’ll probably break the record with a home run.

i just vommed my cheerios.
so how many games do we need to lose to get first pick?
by twistedlogic on Sep 10, 2009 10:02 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Too many to realistically have a shot
We’d have to lose 9 more than the Nats over the last 23 games. At there current winning percentage, they’ll only win 7 more games. (a) The Nats would have to get hot down the stretch and (b) we’d basically have to lose every game. I’m confident in our ability to do (b), but (a) is likely not going to happen.
by kba26 on Sep 10, 2009 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
you never know with the nats
they could go on, like, a two game winning streak or something. yea, you’re right, we don’t have a chance

How much better is the first vs. third pick really?
Just curious. There’s not that big a falloff is there? Esp. since they’re all just prospects.

What's the over/under on distance of The Captain's most historic hit?
It’s either gonna be an infield hit or a bloop into no mans land RF-2B.
Part of me wants him to get it the hell over with as I’m tired of seeing him in headlines. The other part wants no part of my team being in the record books for it.

That Pie article doesn’t mention his poor splits for RHP vs. LHP. He doesn’t have a lot of major league PAs, but that split is a definite trend since his minor league days. He may turn out to be a platoon player due to that discrepancy. Also, given this second half spike, I wonder if any teams will offer a deal – hopefully one where MacPhail gets someone to overpay.

I know! He is so modest
especially that last paragraph…
This is what I’ll watch the rest of the season. I know we won’t get enough wins to have an even somewhat respectable record, and I’m incapable of hoping for us to lose enough games to get the #1 draft pick, so instead I’ll focus on Brian and his doubles.

I can’t bring myself to hope we lose either. It’ll be tough for him to get 10 doubles though. Hopefully he hits 2-3 tonight to make it a little easier.
