Matusz's rookie season wraps up -- baltimoresun.com
Brian Matusz 's first pro season has officially come to an end, stopping after the best start of his big league career. -zk

So who replaces Matusz in the rotation? - MASNsports.com
Mark Hendrickson, that's who. Making Hendo a starter weakens an already awful bullpen, not to mention what it does to the rotation. -Stacey

Brian Roberts and Kendry Morales headline my All-Underrated Team - Ted Keith - SI.com

You think O's fans have it bad - washingtonpost.com
Now it seems that being a Nats fan -- and wearing one of those green Nationals hats -- not only can be embarrassing but can even get you in a heap of trouble. One Congressman's green Nationals hat was mistaken for Hamas headgear in Israel. (2nd item) -duck

Former Orioles Could Be Yankees' October Weapon - Bats Blog - NYTimes.com
Freddy Guzman, sent from the O's to the Yanks at the end of August for a PTBNL, could have an effect in October. -zk

Aubrey Huff's pinch-hit, ninth-inning homer sparks Tigers | The Detroit News
Aubrey Huff, who's had his troubles since going to Detroit, made some fans last night with a pinch hit, 3 run homerun in the bottom of the 9th inning to tie the Tigers and Blue Jays at 5-5. The Tigers would win in the 10th inning. -Stacey

God, editorial standards have fallen

That underrated piece keeps referring to Nick as a left fielder. Do sports publications care at all anymore?

Wait, the green Gnats cap ISN'T Hamas headgear? So much for the ONLY COOL THING about the Gnats...

Dang, I have tickets to Thursdays game

in which I’ll be seeing Hendo instead of Matusz.

I can live with it though. It would be great if he got a win, I’d cheer so loud for him. He’s grown on me this year. I had a bigger problem with him than Adam Eaton. Andy MacPhail and Dave Trembley were all like “we’re getting some value from him dammit”

The problem

And I said this a couple times now which I know is annoying, is that we know he’s a decent reliever and a crappy starter. I feel like Chris Waters or any of his AAA clones could be as crappy as Hendo without compromising the already awful bullpen.

I suspect

that they have no future plans for Hendo at all, and they’re willing to chew him up and spit him out this year.

I can’t say I wholly disagree.

Joe Mauer

Posada is 37 or 38 years old. Joe Mauer is a free agent at the end of the season, I believe. Does this mean that the Yanks sign Mauer to replace Posada?

by BaltoBen on Sep 15, 2009 12:09 PM EDT reply actions

Mauer is a FA after 2010

I’d imagine it’ll be a free for all between the Yankees and Red Sox to get him. I know Minnesota doesn’t spend the big bucks, but I’d really like to see them shell out to keep him, what with him being the local boy and all. But I suppose it matters what Mauer wants.

Supposedly he wants to stay.

We’ll see if that means he’ll grant a home town discount or not though…

Yeah I forgot about that too.

If they can lock up him and Morneau for a long time that would be great for them.

by O'sFan21 on Sep 15, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Morneau is more dispensible

But yeah, depending on the price and the length of the deal, I’d be willing to talk to him, too. The Twins haven’t exactly been great at developing power outside of him.

"You don’t EVEN KNOW who birdman is!"

exactly

much easier. Mauer is one of the best players in the game. There’s probably nobody like him out there, and only a few with the potential to be like him (Wieters is one).

Morneau is merely a top-10 first sacker, which makes him disposable once he gets expensive.

Three comments on the Nats hat

1. We finally found the Nats fan! We should ask if he cares if he gets his games on HD.

2. I know there are some cultural differences at play here, as well as a general Israeli abundance of caution, but is it really reasonable to make the assumption that someone traveling with an American Congressional delegation is a secret Hamas sympathizer?

3. That said, serves the guy right for wearing a green hat. Get the regular colors, dude!

Was he traveling with a congressional delegation, though?

I read it pretty carefully and it never said that. Also, he was traveling with his dad. Not to mention you’d think that if he was traveling on official government business he’d get some a briefing on what to do and not do, which might include not wearing what is essentially gang colors in Israel.

Guess I'm guilty of jumping to conclusions

I was thrown off by the mentioning that he’s a legislative assistant, which doesn’t strike me as a fact relevant enough to put into the article. However, looking at it again, I see it’s one of those political-related “bits and pieces of news” things, so I guess without that tenuous connection to the American legislative process, it wouldn’t even be mentioned.

It was from Al Kamen's column, right?

He’s a very well-connected dude who writes a semi-regular column (used to be every day, but I guess he’s getting up there) on the inside happenings of the DC political crowd. People email him tips and stories and the like. It looks like the guy from the story is a leg assistant who just knew the right people to email the anecdote.

3. Actually, he got the regular colors. Let's face it, the dude IS Hamas.

Lineups, per Roch

Felix Pie CF
Jeff Fiorentino LF
Brian Roberts 2B
Nick Markakis RF
Melvin Mora 3B
Luke Scott DH
Matt Wieters C
Michael Aubrey 1B
Cesar Izturis SS

Jason Berken RHP

I don’t know which is worse, this lineup or the decision to use Hendo as a starter again. DD knows that Niemann is the Ray’s Bergesen? He’s just giving up early?

ARGH

This lineup makes me SO ANGRY!!! I want to enjoy, just a tiny bit, watching the O’s for the next few weeks… I don’t want total shitshows and this lineup makes me nervous and upset.

Great sig though, CoachOfEarl.

This lineup is hideous.

Why? I don’t know which is worse, Batting Izturis 2nd, Or this bullcrap. Its bad enough that Berken never wins a game anyway, But we have to throw this out there. Bat B-Rob 1st for crying out loud, have Pie hit 2nd, Markakis 3rd, and let “The Gazelle” DH for a little while unless he’s feeling really busted up.

And why have Mora AND Scott hit in front of Wieters? Scott must new contacts or something, and Melmo is Melmo.

I want to like Captain Tremblay, But he makes it hard.
