Shouldn't have had any expectations for this season..
they’re not doing anything that wasn’t expected of them. But I think I’ve finally lost hope for this franchise. I can only wonder if we’re in the opening limb of a drought which will last most of our lifetimes.
(Talk about doom and gloom…)
false...this was gonna be the year
rich hill was going to emerge as the ace of the team and lead a rag-tag lineup of wiggy, melmosity, montanez, ryan freel and others to victory and take over the world.
maybe i had lofty expectations

I haven’t worn an O’s hat since they broke out of the All Star break with a pathetic losing streak. It has been Ravens since then(and for all you fans of other football teams, replace Ravens with “your team” hat – I don’t care about hearing about them).
The O’s are just fascinating for all the wrong reasons. It was the “Dancing Homer” episode when Homer wondered why people like stories of humiliation and degradation and Moe responded “I dunno, they just do”. That’s what the O’s have become for me. I find all the cynical and bitter vitriol entertaining. Especially when it is aimed at the architect of this mess – Peter Angelos. If Andy MacPhail is fired or leaves because he is fed up, I think it will be the last straw for me. I’ll go back to not paying any attention to the Orioles.
but football players do not wear hats, I'll have you know.

well it's no surprise that you and I are quite different
you say that kind of stuff every year and I get miserable every year.

I'm not glad about the O's state of affairs. Stating the obvious...
It’s just wasted energy to get upset over something you don’t control. The state of Orioles doesn’t reflect on me. Same if they ever get good. Fans who become obnoxious because “their” team wins are shit-for-brains.

Remember kids, don't do steroids
unless you want to hit a lot of RBI, like me!
"I hate seeing Bedard go, but I think the O's may have gotten the better end of the deal" -- me, 2/8/08
That fangraphs chart makes it look like Piggly Wiggly's single helped the MFY win
maybe by clogging the bases?

Yikes
That 8th inning kinda summed up like.. the last dozen years.

I know the team was supposed to be bad and all this year, but this is getting pretty rough. Not sure how much more I can take.
I’m starting to get increasingly bitter and angry at people during threads, so I apologize for that. I really hate this shit. I think I’ll try to just get blacked out drunk the next three nights.
That was Awful
1) Washington
2) Kansas City -5.5
3a) Baltimore —8
3b) Pittsburgh -8
5) San Diego -12.5
I really want at least 3rd, but I think 2nd is achievable. The Pirates need to start winning games though, they’ve lost 7 straight

So, not a very good game, huh? Sir Fartay and the Knights of the Wrong Table at it again...
I guess we showed those Yerkees a thing or two. Or three, actually, and at home. Ah, September Sucktitude in full bloom. I almost wish I could get into math_geek’s Contrarian Sweepstacks mindset, but I can’t — perhaps because 2003 is ever with me. It was literally stunning. And, um, not in a good way.
Anyway, today’s a day off, so players can go to church or go to hell (Sir Fartay doesn’t get to choose). After that they can catch up on their NCAA fb handicapping — which they always seem to have considerable time for in September, alas. Here’s a leg up, guys, on the first interesting contest:
Oregon 37 Boise St 34. I know, I know: don’t bet against Smurf Turf, blah-blah-blah. Tough. What I have written, I have written. Oh, and in the Mediocrity Beats a Bad Dog at Home category, Snodfart edges Wash St.

Did You Know? Sonoma State University athletic teams were called The Cossacks until...
they weren’t. I’ve wondered sometimes whether I should go down to Rostov-on-Don or somewhere in the Kuban and tell the actual Cossacks about this — I don’t believe they were consulted about the name change — but I’ve hesistated, on the theory that, well, they have the reputation of being somewhat tempermental, and that may include a strain of Kill the Messenger-itis. Anyway, I miss the cool logo:

Haha
I am glad I turned this off after it went to 3-1. I guess I am a bit mad I missed the Reimold dinger, but definitely glad I missed JJ and Sir Fart’s outings. The O’s are on the Tower of Terror plummeting to the bottom faster than a submarine.
Trembley once again needs to go!!!!!!
First of all let me start out in saying MASN after the game last night asked them selves how did we let this one get away? Its simple coaching. Either you have it or you don’t and trembley does not have it. Some coaches know when to take pitchers out and some don’t. Once again he does not have that knack. CAN SOMEONE please please please tell me why they took Berken out in the 6th? He threw 80 something pitches and was pitching just fine, I mean he has won 3 straight! Then they take him out and put Hendrickson in for one batter in which he struck out!!!! I understand the righty, lefty match up but how in the world if this team next year or the year after with this coaching mentality will they ever learn to get right and left handed batters out if they are ever put in a situation to get multiple guys out??? SOMEONE TELL ME THAT ONE TOO? Please I need some answers because lord knows MASN and the orioles won’t give them to you.
How did we "let this one get away??" We scored 2 runs and gave up 10. We fucking suck. That's how.
The pitching was fucking ugly, but what difference does it make when you socre 2 runs? Did you expect to beat the Yerks 2-1??
Trembley should have gone out there and pitched, obviously
although Berken probably coulda stayed out there.
My point exactly.
That statment was a dumb ass one to begin with. I wish some reporter would be like cause we suck! But that is why Jon Miller got fired.

Me too
Weren’t they called Yerks? Those brain-inhabiting aliens? I am reaching into the depths of my mind here.
CAN SOMEONE please please please tell me why they took Berken out in the 6th? He threw 80 something pitches and was pitching just fine, I mean he has won 3 straight!
I know you dont agree its a good idea, but they’re trying to limit his innings the rest of the way. Right or wrong, I think its pretty clear that’s what it was.
And considering we've been eliminated from winning the division 30 games before the end of the year
I think its probably a good idea to not over throw our young arms.

AND SOMETHING ELSE
We stink with bases loaded!!!!
by Oriolebird88 on Sep 3, 2009 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions
O's in '09
Bases Loaded: 137 plate appearances with .303/.365/.477 with 7 2B, 4 HR, and 15 BB.
RISP: 1303 plate appearances with .283/.361/.446 with 75 2B, 7 3B, 31 HR and 143 BB.
The Orioles are considerably worse with the bases empty (.260/.318/.399)

Where do these numbers rank in the league?
And I wonder what the splits are on the 1st half of the season vs the second.
by John Stephens on Sep 3, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions
I was wondering that myself
the 1st vs 2nd half anyway. B-R doesn’t have the bases occupied stats broken up by half. Seeing where they’d rank would be pretty easy though.
Earl Weaver would’ve kissed Adam Dunn on the mouth in public. - SC 08/11/08
more stats!
RISP, 2 outs:
594 PA with .236/.328/.366 with 3 2B, 4 3B, 10 HR
Also, “Late & close”:
804 PA with .225/.277/.333
So
basically Orioles and clutch are antonyms?
by John Stephens on Sep 3, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions
clutch stats
don’t mean all that much to me. Neither to RISP stats and all that really, I just wish people would look at numbers before making statements.
If you sort the Orioles clutch stats by their, clutchness, or whatever, you’ll see a descending OPS from least to most. You could look at that as them crumbling under pressure/not caring/“un-clutch”/whatever, but in my opinion it’s more that when you play good, competitive teams, they bring in their best reliever late in the game/high leverage situations or best bench player to hit for a below average hitter, whatever, and the Orioles as a bad team can’t compensate.
Just my opinion and doesn’t matter in the long run because either way you look at it, the Orioles still suck.

Just for you Johnny :)
I looked up the rest of the AL East, plus some additional stats for the O’s. I normally don’t pay attention to RBIs but I figure since it’s RISP it might not be bad to take a look.
O’s: RISP – 432 RBI, 30 GIDP, 29 SF, OPS+ 110
Loaded – 97 RBI, 7 GIDP, 11 SF, OPS+123
Blue Jays: RISP – 1364 PA, 66 2B, 33 HR, 164 BB, .256/.343/.405 419 RBI, 48 GIDP. 36 SF, OPS+ 95
Loaded: 134 PA, 7 2B, 3 HR, 4 BB, .270/.276/.402, 83 RBI, 10 GIDP, 8 SF, OPS+ 78
Rays: RISP – 1490 PA, 72 2B, 35 HR, 207 BB, .264/.369/.423, 468 RBI, 34 GIDP, 37 SF, OPS+ 106
Loaded – 154 PA, 12 2B, 5 HR, 12 BB, .305/.351/.547, 119 RBI, 3 GIDP, 11 SF, OPS+ 135
Red Sox: RISP – 1443 PA, 69 2B, 36 HR, 202 BB, .274/.379/.434, 467 RBI, 45 GIDP, 44 SF, OPS+ 112
Loaded – 184 PA, 11 2B, 1 HR, 16 BB, .259/.315/.354, 110 RBI, 11 GIDP, 17 SF, OPS+ 79
Yankees: RISP – 1508 PA, 74 2B, 38 HR, 195 BB, .271/.371/.435, 507 RBI, 47 GIDP, 31 SF, OPS+ 110
Loaded – 162 PA, 8 2B, 1 HR, 11 BB, .271/.302/.364, 109 RBI, 10 GIDP, 11 SF, OPS+ 78
I think one of the most telling of all those things is plate appearances. Sure the Orioles have better overall numbers with the bases loaded than the Yankees, but the Yankees have over 200 more plate appearances in the same situation.

i agree with limiting innings over the season
i don’t agree at all with limiting innings in a game where the pitch count is low and the guy is cruising.
add two innings now and give him one less start later. jeez.
"The single best thing any rebuilding manager can do, ever, is trade a relief pitcher in late July for a couple of solid prospects."

disappointing
i was working until about the 8th inning. figuring it was already a blowout, i checked the score before turning on masn. i can deal with 3-1. hey, 3-2. this is kind of interesting. fail.
Question
I missed most of the game (turned it on a few minutes before Nolan’s HR, turned it off when JJ put runners on the corners with zero outs) but I saw that Pie got two hits off of CC. For anyone who saw it, were they good hits or cheap?
Earl Weaver would’ve kissed Adam Dunn on the mouth in public. - SC 08/11/08
I didn't see Pie's first hit
But his second was a nice hit off the end of his bat into right field. Coulda been an RBI had it not been Wieters on 2nd.
by John Stephens on Sep 3, 2009 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions
I think the first hit
was an oppo liner – the guys on the radio said he did a good job not trying to do too much with a good pitch
another thing i didn't like about trembley last night
batting Pie 9th…. we all get it that he isn’t the best against LH pitchers, but right now he is the teams hottest hitter. Why would you put your hottest hitter at the very bottom of the line-up? it’s the same mentality that tells him to pull out a reliever who may be dominating that night because of the L-R handed match-ups.
i dont really see batting 9th as an insult or really stupid
batting him seventh or eigth would be because thats where the guys who arent hitting that well go but i personally dont have a problem with putting a guy who is currently producing in the 9th spot
Why don't you have a problem with that?
Don’t you want good hitters/hitters that are doing well to get the most ABs?? And why would you want him hitting after “the guys who aren’t hitting that well”??
