O's slide grows to 12 games -- baltimoresun.com
"He canceled batting practice before today's game, told his players to report later than usual to Tropicana Field and encouraged them to use the time to "go do something nice, go have fun, take your wife, go see a movie. Well folks...
This slide is certainly disheartening. But think how much talent we dont have currently playing for us as opposed to earlier…

It blows, but for a .500 team to take all that talent away, I dont know what else we should’ve expected. Im ready to choke a baby seal at this point.

I understand...
My first reaction was that I don’t think Koji is talented. But I suppose he hasn’t sucked nearly as bad as most of the pitchers we’ve wheeled out there. Sorry to cause so much contention! :-p

He doesn’t have great stuff or anything, but he’s a passable number 4 starter and that’s much more than we can say for Hendo/Waters/Hernandez/Berken/etc…

Sano signs with Twinkies !!!??
I thought the Orioles were in the hunt for the Dominican wunderkind SS. Now I see the Twins have signed him for $3 mil+. Do the O’s have a secret SS somewhere that hits like Miguel Cabrera? What is wrong with them? Are they simply not paying attention? Or maybe Mychal Givens has suddenly decided to play baseball for a change.
Well he is "16" so he might not be worth it really

I'm starting to really believe
the sportswriters in this town won’t be happy at all until Davey Johnson is rehired. Seriously, that’s the only thing I ever hear from the professionals when it comes time to talk about the manager: he’s no Davey Johnson. What the Orioles need is a Davey Johnson type. Davey Johnson knows how to win games, deal with it!
Ugh. What happens if Davey Johnson comes here and the Orioles are still mediocre (at best) because the on-field talent isn’t quite there? Then what? You’ll be able to hear the disillusionment around town as loud as a banshee scream.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I think Dave-o is gone gone gone, and it’s probably a good thing. But I’m tired of hearing about Davey Johnson.

Sano
When Givens signed, I assumed that we would not pursue Sano. Too bad that Pittsburg lost yesterday, we are close to having the number 2 pick.
At some point, I would like to see an evaluation of Joe Jordan and his draft choices. Jordan was hired in November 2004, meaning that he owns the 2005-9 draft classes. Evaluating the entire draft is beyond my capability. Looking at the first rounders reveals a mixed bag. 2005 was Brandon Snyder. 2006, Billy Rowell. 2007, Matt Wieters, 2008, Brian Matusz. 2009, Matt Hobgood.
Wieters and Matusz were high on everyone’s list, so they were obvious selections. Hobgood was a puzzling choice to the baseball world, so selecting him gives Jordan a chance to be a hero or a goat. Rowell is a puzzler because he is bad at the plate and in the field. I can see why a scout might be seduced by a HS player’s power, and fail to see the fatal flaw in the swing. But, why couldn’t they see that Rowell is a liability in the field? Mike Flanagan predicted that Rowell would be in the big leagues after only two years in the minors. How could they be so very wrong on the boy’s ability to catch and throw? I assume that most high draft choices who flame out do so in the upper minors. Rowell has been awful from the start. The jury is still out on Snyder, but his bad numbers at Norfolk don’t bode well for next year.
So, out of 5 first round choices, Jordan has two successes, one failure, one probable failure, and one too early to tell. Is this a good record?
Iirc Jordan wanted lincecum
The GM’s stepped in and said “no we want rowell”

I bet you Dave Trembley was told to play this guy just to shut him up…and who told him?…not MAC PHAIL…can you say PETER THE NOT-SO-GREAT? What was the sense of playing this SELFISH player?
He should have been GONE as soon as he opened his mouth…HE will not be here next year…so why not play a JOSH BELL???

I attempted to decipher it
I had to read it three times, but the gist of his argument is: Mora whinned, he should have been fired immediately (?), but instead Trembley was instructed — not by Andy MacPhail, but by Peter Angelos — to play Mora in order to shut Mora up. And next year, instead of playing Mora, we should play Josh Bell. Ta-daaaa.
Well
I did have trouble reading it, and wanted to see if there was anything in there worth contemplating… all I have to say is, we’ll probably be starting Wiggy at 3rd base, right? Josh Bell isn’t ready yet, is my understanding. Unless we trade or pick up an FA. I don’t mind Wiggy at 3B, personally, at least for the short-term.
100% agree... despite unpopular opinion
Josh Bell makes me REALLY nervous defensively…
I heard he makes Wiggy look thin.

Doubles
I have used simple math (the only kind I know) to figure out if Brian Roberts will get to 60 doubles before the end of the season.
Brian has 56 doubles as of last night. He’s played in 154 games, so he hits a double once every 2.75 games. Or, he has had 613 at bats, so he hits a double about every 11 at bats.
The O’s have 5 games left (or around 20 at bats for Brian), and assuming Trembley doesn’t sit Brian for any of them, Brian will likely hit 2 more doubles. So the answer according to my math is: no, he will not get to 60.
Of course, my math does not account for the fact that Brian Roberts is a doubling MACHINE and he could totally hit 4 doubles in 5 days. He also has been known to slump and not hit a thing, and also to get hot and hit doubles all over the place. In conclusion, waiting to see if Brian will hit another double is one of the only reasons I’m still watching these games.
Agreed.
That, Nicky remembering how to hit again, and Matty continuing to dominate are the reasons I’m watching.
Whenever Matty gets a hit these days
I think to myself, fuck yes this is awesome, but it will be a bajillion times more awesome when we are not a craptastic team and Wieters’ glory is known throughout the land!!!!!

As in Wreck
Trembley’s instructions to the team remind me of an incident in Bill Veeck’s memor VEECK: AS IN WRECK. In his younger days he owned the minor-league Milwaukee Brewers and they had a very long losing streak. At the end of a game he handed each player some money, $5 I think. with the instructions that they were to spend it all on drink that night. This was in the late 40’s so that would buy a lot of booze. Anyway, the first 9 guys to drag in the next day were put in the line up and they won a double-header . So maybe Trembley did no go far enough!
Of course, I should point out that one chaper of one of Veeck’s books was titled “Where are the Drunks of Yesteryear” decrying dullness of modern players.
"Killing a Yankee fan -- is that illegal in this state?" -- Homicide Life on the Street
lol
Yep, what the MLB needs is more alcoholic players!
I can see what Trembley’s doing though… trying to get the players to relax, operating under the assumption that they’re putting too much pressure on themselves to stop sucking and break out of the losing streak. Only thing is, I don’t know if telling them to relax and take an afternoon off will change anything with this bunch.
But if anything that makes it seem like an even better idea. If you know you’re just not equiped for the battle, no sense stressing about it and running guys through unnecessary BP and defensive drills and shit before the game. Better to just play loose and see what happens I think. It’s game 158 or whatever – extra BP and shagging fly balls isn’t going to help ya.
And furthermore...
… Im sure they’ve tried about everything else. Why not give it a shot. What do we have to lose… another game?
I really don’t care if they lose their last 5, this has been depressing. That being said.
THIS IS BIRDLAND B___!

Oh I agree
we don’t have anything to lose, I just have the feeling we’re going to lose the game regardless. I hate being so negative about it… but there it is. Prove me wrong, Orioles! Prove me wrong!
I don't even think I can be mad at this point
Look at the lineup we’re running out there. Look at who’s in the rotation and who’s in the bullpen. Of COURSE we’ve lost twelve in a row. Maybe I’m dumb to the pain after a season’s worth of painful moments. I feel like I should be pissed. This is the one goddamn thing we were supposed to avoid this year, yet another August/September swoon and it’s worse than ever.
Okay, not worse than ever. I don’t think we’re past 4-32 to close out the season yet like 2002. But worse, compared to expectations, than ever.
Maybe it’s made a little easier because we have at least a couple of bright lights left to follow. B-Rob’s doubles chase is a delight and Wieters starting to figure everything out is one sign that there may actually be something good around the corner. But the end of the season can’t get here soon enough at this point. Please put us out of our misery.

All i wanted was 63 wins, and now that looks like it will be hard to come by.

I am trying to stay positive, we’ve had way to many injuries. To save myself, I haven’t watched a game in 2 or 3 weeks. Good luck the rest of the season, and have a good time at CC night, CC.
