Orioles 5- Rangers 4, Look at us America!
Oh man, the start of this game was bad. Brian Matusz gave up a single, a double, and a home run in the first. Things looked pretty grim. Then the O's fought back in the bottom half as Pie singled and Riemold doubled to put runners at first and third. After Roberts struck out Markakis had a sac fly to bring in the first Oriole run of the game.
Brian Matusz would settle down and pitch into the 7th for the second time in a row, this is a good sign for all Oriole fans as he walked just one, struck out four, and gave up six hits, half of which came in the first inning. He ran into trouble in the 3rd, giving up three more hits and a run. After that he would face 13 batters without giving up a hit and allowing just one baserunner in that span. In the fitfh, Matt Wieters erased the lone baserunner for the Rangers, during that time, by throwing out Elvis Andrus trying to steal second base. It is also important to note that it seems as though Nick should have had the ball that fell for a triple and resulted in the last run Matusz would give up back in the third inning.

Melvin Mora was the hitting hero of this game, first he had a solo shot in the second. Then he had a two out, bases loaded, rbi single in the third. That was followed by a second rbi single in the 5th. He finished the day, 3-4 with 3 runs batted in and a run scored. Melvin rounded out his day with some nice defensive play.
The rest of the scoring happened when Nolan Riemold went yard in the 3rd, with a solo shot.
Danys Baez pitched a perfect 8th and the act was followed by Jim Johnson who went three up three down, with no drama, in the 9th. JJ recorded his 8th save. For those of you keeping track Danys now has 10 holds.
Hope y'all enjoyed this "nationally" televised game in "HD." Good night and good luck.
P.S. Those were some sharp threads today.

Just got home from the game
which I enjoyed in the company of 2632 and another friend. Matusz looked bad in the first, but he got it together so nicely. The kid threw some straight filthy pitches for strikes. I’m glad I got to see him before he gets shut down for the year.
Also, Melvin. I love you Melvin! Great hits! Great play!

It was also nice
to see him get so deep into the game, in one of his final starts.
"Chicks who dig home runs aren’t the ones who appeal to me, I think there’s sexiness in infield hits because they require technique. I’d rather impress the chicks with my technique than with my brute strength. Then, every now and then, just to show I can do that, too, I might flirt a little by hitting one out."-Ichiro

Should also add
That Matusz should have rightfully only given up 3 runs if Nicky hadn’t lost that routine flyball in the sun.
FYI
That was my 10th game of the year and I’m 9-1. Ok so only two of those games were after the AS break but they were both wins!

maybe i’ll try the DC one, Fox 5 ….. ah! glorious HD!
Columbia, MD FTW!
Yay(?)
Boston won, so now they are 3 games up. A win is nice, but FUCK! I really dont wanna see both Yankee teams in the playoffs.
also
I didnt get this game, I guess do to the fact that it was a “national” game on fox so it got blacked out on extra innings, yet fox televised sawx-sox here in NJ. Oh well.
Boston didn't win
You’ve got your Sox mixed up. They lost 5-1.

oh awesome
I heard it on the radio while I was heading home from work (yep, on a saturday). Either I misheard or espn radio mis told me. either way, awesome.
On the up side
If both the Yankees and Red Sox make the playoffs, at least somebody is going home miserable. If only the Yankees make the playoffs I fear the worst…

Good write-up, Westie, and nice efforts from Memlo (on his annual salary drive) and B-Mats (stuff? Yeah, he's got stuff)
In other news: Near Vomit in Subway!
I’m on the up escalator exiting Chistye Prudy station yesterday evening when whom does I spy coming on the down-side escalator but a PH-wearing…Yerkee fan! Yes, very pink, big NY in the middle. I assume it was an American under it, but I was hardly going to yell across to him, “Hey douchebag, go Jeter-double yourself” or something to make sure. Plus, he was bigger than me (I ain’t small…) and I was busy wretching. I mean, Judas Priest, it was a holiday and everything…
Yep, yesterday was Moscow City Day, which the GF and I (plus her kid) celebrated with Czech draft beer (Coke for the kid) and sausages at a nice (and uncheap) beerhall-type restaurant just off the aforementioned Chistrye Prudy Blvd, where there were Slavic bagpipers, judo-karate-tae kwando-etc. demonstrations, giant chess boards (one guy had a “Beat me, win 50 rubles” sign) and all manner of street games (ahem: I won a stuffed animal— and gave it to the kid, but at age 9 he liked the Titanic book from a used book stall much better).
In other news, skepticism at the 16.5 consensus spread for Stanford@Wiggingggton State proved justifed, as Snodfart failed to cover, winning by a mere…16! OK, color me marginally embarrassed. Meanwhile, why Portland State was allowed on the same field with OSU remains a mystery and Cal is drubbing MD as we speak (sorry duck), clearly making good use of the nation’s best running back. Oh yeah, SC won, yawn, and UCLA showed surprising glimmers of near-competence in doing the same. And somehow UW played a respectable first half against LSU— OK, OK, if you haven’t played on that field before, the Seattle sun-warp/turf factor can catch teams by surprise, and it looks like it did for two quarters.
OK, it’s Guts tonight— and I get to watch my weekly game!!! Go O’s!

Yes, yes you are.
Jim Palmer: "I said to Nolan, 'Why do you run every ball out like that?' and he said, 'Why wouldn’t you?' "
HEy!
Great game by the O’s! Great drinking night by me! I just puked in the courtyard! Good times! O’s! Fuck yeha!
More on Matusz
When I was the game I obviously noticed how well Matusz pitched after settling down in the first, but couldn’t keep close track of what he was doing. When we were in the 9th I couldn’t believe how fast the game felt. I was over at Lone Star Ball to see what they thought of Matusz, and they made the same fast game comment, and gave credit to Matusz for being so good. I went back to gameday and saw his inning pitch counts:
First: 19
Second: 10
Third: 17
Fourth: 8
Fifth: 10
Sixth: 10
Seventh: 11
That’s so great. It seems that lately when one of our young pitchers is out there, they have one inning that takes like 30 pitches and essentially takes an inning off of their game. Matusz was ridiculous out there.

I affectionately refer
to the 30 pitch inning as the “Berken”.

i am SO using that.
Then you call 'em in and say, 'It's the consensus among us that we're going to let you go back home.' Some of them cry, some get mad, but none of them will leave until you answer them one question, 'Skipper, what do you think?' And you gotta look every one of those kids in the eye and kick their dreams in the ass and say no. If you say it mean enough, maybe they do themselves a favor and don't waste years learning what you can see in a day. —Earl Weaver
Melmo
So, one of my niece’s first words was “melmo”. My sister believes she is trying to say elmo, but I know otherwise.
i will need to teach my next door neighbor's kid
to say "ADAM JONES, SON.
"I think my motivation is to see the other guys in the clubhouse. They’re contending for the playoffs, and when I see that it gets into my body. I play like it’s the playoffs too" —Memlo
Guess the year.
Kids love Melvin. A while back I won my then-5-yr-old an Orioles bear at the fair. He named it Melvin. I won him another one, just like it. He named it Sammy.
Has there ever been a cooler Oriole than Eddie Murray? I mean, just straight up cool. Like a bad, suave dude. You know what I'm sayin'. COOL. SC 7/24/08
