An Owner Poll
So this is almost definitely going to sound a little obvious, but I'm working on a project and thought getting some input from the fanbase at large would be a good idea. Just run with me.
The question is two-fold:
1) Is Peter Angelos a good owner? Yeah, I'll be shocked if anyone says "Yes", but it's part of the question.
2) Elaborate in the comments about what makes an owner (not just confining it to baseball or Baltimore) of a sports franchise "good" or "bad".
If you can further elaborate on why Angelos in particular fits the good or bad mold, go for it. It'll be helpful.
Thanks a lot, guys.

er...i know it's not the most popular opinion
im not entirely convinced of it myself, so it’s really more like a 51% yes, 49% no.
We all know about the losing seasons. But, he played a hand in not having replacement players during the strike, thus keeping Cal’s streak intact.
I think the main undoing for Angelos was the success he had in the late 90s, particularly when he prevented trading away our veterans in July of 96 which actually led to us making the playoffs for the first time in over a decade. So, that probably inflated his ego a bit too much, which made him a little bit too reluctant to change course over the years.
But, he finally has conceded he knows nothing about baseball and the team appears to be headed in the right direction.
Also, I think a lot of people are just haters, so I wanted to try to at least tip the scales a little bit.

You should re-work your poll.
Make it a 1-5 rating or at least add a third option. Is he a “good” owner? Its hard to say. he’s better than Irsay, anyway, but not as good as Art Modell.
It seems to me that you could draw a few parallels between franchise ownership and being a landlord. Is the roof caving in? Is the water running and not full of lead? Do we have a gourmet kitchen and a hot tub and cathedral ceilings?
I think we live in a decent old brownstone in Reservoir Hill. It used to be great in the old days, and if the landlord bought us some new furniture and restored some of the original finishes, it could re-capture its former glory. In the meantime though, its not the worst of slums.

A little credit
and also more than a little malice. But then I always want another category between two options.
A little credit for keeping out of AM’s way so far
More than a little malice for tolerating the rudderless years that preceeded AM’s arrival.

He's going in the right direction.
He hired Joe Jordan and Andy McPhail. So far that’s been going very well.
Should we base this on his whole entire career as owner?

If we base it on his career as an owner
we’d need an option that says
“He should have been an abortion.”
It only took him over a decade to start making good decisions, and now there’s finally hope.

I see you changed your poll
I was going to vote that he was a bad owner because right now that’s what he is. I believe he is taking steps in the right direction and if/when those things result in a better team, I’ll change my opinion on the man. I don’t think I could ever totally forgive him for the turmoil this team has been through, but I do respect that he finally seems to have seen the light and if he can turn it around I will give him credit for that.
One thing I will say in favor of Peter Angelos is that I’ve never been under the impression that he only uses the team as a cash cow and doesn’t care about winning. I believe the Peter Angelos cares deeply about winning, because he’s been a winner at everything he’s done professionally except for owning a baseball team. Angelos has always been willing to spend money on this team, I just believe he is such an egomaniac that he couldn’t get it through his head that he himself doesn’t know how to put together a winning team. He’s hired yes men, he’s spent unwisely, and he’s driven this team into the ground. But I honestly think he did all that while trying to win. Now, so many years later, he’s finally come to the realization that he cannot do this himself. As long as he allows Andy MacPhail to make the baseball decisions and opens his checkbook when needed, he can redeem himself in the eyes of this Orioles fan.
A successful owner of a sports franchise is one that has the ability to hire all of the right people. The right upper management, the right public relations and promotions people, etc. Almost every sports owner, in every sport, isn’t someone who has played or been a part of that sport, but rather some rich dude who made his millions in a way unrelated to sports. Really, the owner is an investor to some extent. He provides the money and he allows the experts to do their jobs.

+1
Pretty much sums up my feelings. He deeply cares about winning. He’s willing to spend money. But he’s hired a bunch of morons. Hopefully, Andy will be his first good hire who sticks around. From what I can tell, he’s pretty much let him do his job so that’s encouraging.

I voted the "sell the team" option
but honestly, the one thing ive always appreciated about him is that he’s unwilling to move the team. Selling could have resulted in the team being moved, so at least we have that. Really, i’m over blaming him for everything. Whats done is done. He destroyed the O’s but he has them on the right track now (or Andy Mac does, but thats because Pete is staying out of it). Let’s start looking like a major league team in the next 2-3 years and all, or at least most, is forgiven (NOT forgotten, but forgiven).

The *very* short version: I will vote for Peter Angelos as a good owner when Jon Miller says he is a good owner

Awful
Angelos is a terrible owner. He means well and he loves the Orioles, and really considering his predecessors I was pretty excited when he bought the team. As an attorney, Angelos was able to be the one making the decisions, and presumably represented his clients very well. However, that doesn’t translate to being a good owner. It’s not really worth going through the litany of his sins, but it seems to me that Angelos values loyalty over accountability (which is why Thrift and Flanagan got such long leashes, but Wren did not). A fish rots from the head, and the Orioles have rotted because of Angelos, pure and simple. He’s allegedly not as involved as he used to be, and the team is headed in the right direction, but that doesn’t make up for the fact that this team has needlessly sucked for years and years.
The man is 80 I think and presumably won’t be around much longer. And the sad truth is that he could be a better owner than his sons…

Not a tough call
He has been a hands-on owner for worst stretch of the team’s entire history. If he’s not responsible, I don’t know who is, although I bet even he will find people who will stick up or make excuses for him.
