Orioles frustrating again!
The Orioles leave their fans frustrated again! The orioles have this promotion out where they will be selling 500 tickets for a dollar to certain games. Figuring it was going to be a Tuesday night (Sept 15th) game against the Rays where there will probably be 5,000 people there a local radio station in town (WNST) decided that they were going to put together a rally. SEE THE BIRDS. They were going to try and reach that 500 ticket mark and possibly beyond. Since the Orioles web site cost a little more than a dollar with shipping and handling and a convince fee WNST sold them for just two dollars. One dollar goes toward the ticket and the other goes toward the Nick Markakis Right side foundation. With in three hours of the promotion they sold over 500 tickets, so they then asked the orioles (figuring they are doing a good thing by getting people to go to the game) if they could be granted an unlimited amount of tickets for this event which is also going to charity. The Orioles for whatever reason turned them down.
Now this issue leaves me furious and absolutely ticked off. The Orioles stink we know that, but to turn down over 500 fans and 500 dollars worth of charity is absolutely ridiculous. I posted this because the Orioles have once again failed to satisfy the community and to think they don’t even consider this for charity absolutely frustrates me. Once 1 o’clock roles around on Sunday the orioles will have been forgotten for a 12th straight year and this I think would have generated some buzz for them. It was a win win situation and they blew it again. “Wait till they see what the upper deck looks like the rest of the season. I mean this passed weekend we had the lowest attendance in baseball”

WNST is full of crap
WNST did not do what they are doing to try and get people out to see the Orioles. It was a pre-meditated plan to force the Orioles to behave a certain way so that they can lambaste them yet again for being horrible to fans.
The Orioles announced a million times that there are 500 $1 tickets available for every game, and online only. If WNST wanted to run a promotion through their website where they sold tickets for $2 with half going towards a ticket and half going towards Nick Markakis’ charity, what they should have done was talk to the Orioles promotion or tickets department about it and worked something out. That’s what real businesses do. Instead, they announced on their website and on air without consulting the Orioles at all.
Here are excerpts from Drew’s blog about it:
They have to sell us the tickets for $1.00, per the advertisements they’ve been running for the last three weeks or so.
We might wind up with 81 tickets sold. We might wind up with 184. We might wind up with 633. However many we actually wind up selling, they have to honor that number.
And I don’t mean to sound harsh here, but we – our group from WNST – will only be paying $1.00 for each ticket. We’re not paying a ticket service charge and we’re not paying the postal service or some overnight company for delivering them to us. We’re not giving ANYONE any money except the Orioles ($1.00) and Nick Markakis’ foundation ($1.00).
You’ll be able to sign up at WNST.net today via PayPal. You’ll pay $2.00, period. $1.00 gets you a ticket to the game and the other $1.00 will go to Markakis’ foundation and we’ll hand deliver that check to him on Tuesday.
Obviously, the O’s are going to have waive the ticket service charge (which you would have to pay if you booked the $1.00 ticket through them) but, in return, we’re bringing folks to the game and giving their star rightfielder money for his Foundation.
And, please, I don’t want to hear any Who-Struck-John? about how "we can’t sell you the tickets for just a dollar…we have to include the service charge." No, you don’t. Remember, I SOLD tickets for a living." You’re not going to be able to lie to me on this one. You just create a new code in the ticket computer and make it a $1.00 "group ticket" and it’s done.
The ticket price is $1.00, as advertised, and we’re more than willing to pay $1.00 per-seat.
He was basically challenging the Orioles to do WNST’s bidding. And WNST knew the entire time the Orioles wouldn’t do that, which is exactly what they wanted. It was all done simply so Nestor could write a column today about how the Orioles FO are a bunch of useless M-F’ers who don’t care about fans.
It’s obvious to anyone that pays attention that WNST has an agenda and everything they (especially Drew and Nestor) do is with the intent to further that agenda.

There is no reason the orioles cant grant them that because there is going to be no body there!!!! Challenging them or not its a loss for the orioles.

SO
If I write on this blog that I’m getting a group together and you only need to pay me $1 for the tickets, regardless of the actual ticket price, and without consulting the Orioles at all, you’re saying I should be able to call them and demand they give me the tickets for $1 no matter what? And the Orioles should agree to that, just because ‘no one is going to be there’? Sounds like the burden is on ME to meet the crazy offer that I gave without consulting the Orioles to even check if that was ok.

I agree 100%
The orioles are basically giving away 500 tickets, so if you’re not in that 500 just go to the next game. It’s nice that WNST wants to help Nick’s charity but it doesn’t change the fact that the O’s didn’t have to run the promotion in the first place. I find that to be just arrogant if Drew and Nestor think the O’s should do what they say just because it is for a good cause without talking to them first.

Sorry
I’ll never agree with you. Drew’s language in his blog was purposefully inflammatory. They WILL sell us the tickets. We WILL NOT pay more than $1 to the Orioles, they HAVE to do this. Just because there aren’t going to be many fans at the game isn’t reason to bow down to such treatment.
Nestor has been crying foul regarding the Orioles for years and at this point it doesn’t matter what the Orioles do, he will only do things to try and make them look bad.

If this doesn’t count as addressing, then what exactly is it?
this reply and your original post are so idiotic, and so devoid of reason,
And the reason I responded to your response here is that I found it obnoxious. You added nothing to the conversation other than to ridicule somebody else’s post.
by O'sFan21 on Sep 10, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
oh good lord
The act of saying something isn’t worth a response is technically a response in and of itself, yes; but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that I was trying to comment as briefly as possible; and it is overly simplistic and child-like for you to evaluate the act of posting rather than the content of the post. It’s just an attempt to stir up trouble.
There is a past history with this particular poster in that s/he has put up lame fanposts before that were basically incoherent rants. We are trying to discourage that kind of thing, and this post doesn’t pass the smell test. It’s filled with gramattical and spelling errors, and is basically a one-sided diatribe which is almost entirely rhetoric, precious little logic, and virtually no connection to reality. To me, it reads as though it was written by a middle-schooler.
I could deconstruct it, point by point, but others above have already done so, nicely. And I tried that last time with this person’s last post, and it went nowhere, which made me realize that this person isn’t worth arguing with. So I said as much.
I added plenty to the conversation—I’m calling out bullshit fanposts as what they are, and supporting those above me who have done so. Saying, “you’re not worth my time”, believe it or not, is a contribution. Sometimes brevity has more power than paragraphs of back-and-forth.

Oh good lord indeed!
I knew exactly what you were doing and I didn’t like it, which is why I responded to it. I thought it was an obnoxious attack of the poster (regardless of whether it was warranted).
If you’re trying to discourage this kind of post you could do it in a constructive manor which is what Stacey (and others) did, by deconstructing their argument and pointing out the flaws/holes.
If you don’t feel like going to the trouble of doing that (which would seem odd since you’re obviously very interested in going to the trouble of responding to my two-word response…) then you probably just shouldn’t have said anything, since what you did say was really just an attack and not a very creative or constructive one. Not what I would expect from a mod.
by O'sFan21 on Sep 10, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I responded to your three word response
because I know from my past history with you that you can be reasoned with, even if we disagree. I responded to you because I have faith you and I can actually have a critical discussion that might allow the other person to see an opposing point of view. My past history with Oriolebird88 has led me to believe that such discussions with him/her are futile and pointless, and my post was my way of letting him/her know that.
You’re welcome to your opinion about whether my post was creative or constructive. I’m not always out to get high marks in those departments.
And I have a long track record as a mod at this site. This particular post was not overly out of character for me or, for that matter, for some of the other mods here. We’re all individuals with our own styles. What you particularly expect or don’t expect is of no real concern to me.

Glad to hear it's of no concern to you that I thought your post was obnoxious!
Really though, if it was of no real concern to you, I don’t think you would have spent all this time responding to it (I don’t usually respond to things that aren’t of concern to me). Sort of like if the original post had been so idiotic that it wasn’t worth you addressing it, you actually wouldn’t have addressed it…

As in our other debate,
you distort what I’ve actually said.
I said what you expect is of no concern to me. Do you see that? It’s right in the box above yours. What that means is, I don’t feel a need to match up to your expectations of me.
That’s a very different thing from responding to an accusation that my post is obnoxious. Of course it’s obnoxious. There are reasons why it’s obnoxious. I logged on to explain them. Having done so as best I can, I’m moving on now.

I’d have to believe this was a set up. Nestor has to drum up business somehow or he’s out on his ass. Living as an entrepreneur is not easy. I don’t understand why people get so caught up in the act. It’s exactly what he (and all the other blow hards in the world) want you to do.
Anyhow, he’s about the only one out there saying pretty much what the fans think. He’s given Peter Angelos a figurative poke in the eye. It’s been richly deserved. You can’t tell me that the “Free the Birds” stunt didn’t embarrass Angelos. WNST will pay the price if the O’s get good. WNST has boxed themselves out of a relationship with the O’s. The ball is in the O’s court to stop being an easy target. If you hate Nestor, that’s a win/win. If the O’s can stop being the losing bumblers Nestor skewers, we’ll get to see a decent team and Nestor will become irrelevant.

Nestor and WNST are still in business
That’s his goal as an entrepreneur. That means enough people play into his schtick so he makes a living. I guess it depends on your perspective, but I’d say he’s staying relevant enough to stay in business.

It’s just sad…but "See The Birds" is over — at the legal urging of Peter G. Angelos and his staff. They don’t want our money. They don’t want our fans. What can I say? I did my best to help them and support these young players.
What “money?” They’re demanding basically free tickets and are making a token donation to Nick’s charity to really ratchet up the bad PR.

this is moronic. as metioned before, it is obvious they are doing this to be able to rip into the O’s FO. The thing I dont get is how they pulled it over on so many people. Nick’s charity is an EXTREMELY thin veil of a “purpose”. What were they gonna raise? $500 bucks? If you want to dontae to Nick’s charity, buy a $1 ticket from the O’s and donate a buck directly to Nick’s charity.
And btw, the O’s did a great job promoting Nick’s charity this year with all the hoopla leading up to the run. They did way more than $500 worth of marketing and advertising for it. But hey, why not make a few more O’s fans become Nats, Yanks, and Sawx fans do to misleading reporting in order to get some ratings? Totally worth it. Jerk.
