Festivus Bird Droppings
The Ravens face off against the Patriots today at 1 p.m. and thus there isn't much Orioles talk going on in the local media. I know not everyone on here is a Ravens fan, but duck and I are, so deal with it. Let's Go Ravens! If you do feel the need for some baseball news, here you go:
Steve Melewski talks about Bordick's new role
I don't remember any specifics about Mike Bordick's baserunning prowess, but given the kind of player he was I can only imagine that he was strong fundamentally in that area. Melewski gives a rundown of his responsibilities and those of others in the O's minor league system in 2010. -Stacey

Ken Burns to update baseball film - Brattleboro Reformer
Originally broken into nine segments (one for each inning in a baseball game), Burns said he will update the film with "The Tenth Inning," focusing on the player strike in 1994, the New York Yankees dynasty and the team's new stadium, the role of the game following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the revival of the Boston Red Sox and the emergence of Latin American and Asian players in the major leagues. Just wha we need. More attention paid to the Yankees and Red Sox. -zk
Rangers reach deal with DH Guerrero - MLB - Yahoo! Sports
The Rangers have signed Vladimir Guerrero to a one year, $5M deal. It'll be weird to see Vlad in another uniform. He played for the Angels for 6 years. -Stacey

Let's Go Ravens-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z.....
Sorry, musta dozed off there in mid-cheer. What can I say, they just don’t do it for me. But y’all have fun now, y’hear?
Ken Burns: For heaven’s sake, Ken, don’t take up any of the issues that have been killing the game: substance abuse, an owner functioning as Pretend Commissioner, two money dynasties strangling the game’s best division, one “major” league condemned to a permanent handicap w/o the DH, bad umpiring going uncorrected despite available technology, a half-dozen obvious rule changes crying to be made… am I going too fast for you here?
Vladdy in Arlington: Think he’s gonna hit any there?
Moscow weather update: Wintry. Surprise!
"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." Churchill,1942-- a rebuilding year.
I heard PBS will be re-airing the Baseball film
I can’t wait to see that thing. I’m going to get my friend to record it and burn it all to DVD for me. I wonder if he’ll say anything about Jeff Maier in ’96…..
"Real Orioles don't pout. Real Orioles don't gloat. Real Orioles just win."
i too wait for this eagerly
mostly interested to see whether ken burns can fathom how Internet has changed game

Come on Ravens!
Beat the Pats and let the Jets take on the Chargers next week

I think that the Jets have a lot more hope against Indy than the Jets.

Mike Bordick
the one foul ball I ever caught was hit by Bordick. My dad and I had a six game plan waaaaaay up in the left field corner but we’d always move down. This time we moved to the third base line probably even with the left fielder.
Bordick hit a rocket line drive that bounced off an empty seat and right into my glove. To this day I’m not sure how I caught it. I’m pretty sure it looked like a great play when in reality it was just really lucky.
I cant take it anymore!!!!
Nah, seriously, go Ravens! My football dream is crumbling around me, and I need the Ravens to move on. All my “other” fave teams are still in it, but now the Pack might end up playing the Saints and the Colts would be playing the Ravens. I hope it gets to that point, but that would be one big conflicted weekend for me.
In any event, I love love love the fact that Ray Rice is already a pro bowler and playing in his 1st playoff game. Show ’em what you got little guy.
i'll be happy with anyone winning who isn't the cowboys or colts.
and would love to see the jets get through another round.

$30M is ridiculous. But I told you, and I’m looking at you Duck, that we could sign him if we just ponied up big money and that he wouldn’t just go to the Yanks or Red Sox. But hey I would spend $30M on Chapman than $20M on Millwood and Delgado. And YES, Millwood doesn’t prevent us from signing Chapman.

Chapman
From the little that I’ve read about him, he sounds like he could be left-handed Daniel Cabrera. This is a definitely a high risk, high reward signing if the Reds do get him for $30M.

May not be a bad idea.
Maybe I could have purchased a gun from Academy they had on sale that I was going to give to my brother for Christmas then. Instead, I was on the max waiting period and apparently Academy has an in-store policy where they HAVE to have a call back on the background check or after 30 days they sell the firearm. The law is three days and then the dealer/store is supposed to sell it. I didn’t get it though. And they were like, “You want to try again? It will be full price now.”

Arroyo
was apparently dating/banging college chicks in Boston when he was on the Sux. There were pictures of them in her dorm room.
Not an intrinsically horrible scenario
He was 26-28 in his Boston years. OK, if it was a freshman that’s a little creepy, but, you know.
However, I’m going to go ahead and lay this rule down: once you’re in the major leagues, you need to find somewhere better to go than the girl’s dorm room. Or anybody’s dorm room.

I was thinking the same thing. The Reds actually look pretty interesting in general. Lots of good homegrown talent. Now if they could plug in the right vets, they could be contenders next year.

yeah...
i sorta forget what else they have besides the razor, votto, bruce and brandon phillips, but the three non-ramon hernandez hitters are a damn fine offensive core.

I wonder
because there was the initial hype of overwhelming proportions on both of them, Strasburg and Chapman. And it never backed off on Strasburg, but he was stuck in the draft system and so got a good deal, but obviously way below market.
But with Chapman, the hype gave way to a rip tide of a lot of teams saying “I don’t know about him” or that he was maybe a reliever long-term. Basically I’m wondering is if Stephen Strasburg was a free agent, would the Orioles (and many, many other teams) still be out of the bargaining because the risk was too high? What about lesser prospects like Brian Matusz?
I’m not criticizing anyone of anything, I’m just wondering about the unanswerable.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
Well, Strasburg would have made more than Chapman, for sure
Beyond that, I can’t say. Clearly, the fact that the Reds got Chapman answers that to a degree, as does the Twins getting Sano and the A’s getting Ynoa.
Beyond that, I have to say that the Chapman deal doesn’t seem too bad to me. The latest is $25 million for five years, with a player option for a sixth with the payments spread out over the next decade. Even if Chapman is only a reliever, he’s making an average salary less than Mike Gonzalez will be paid over the next two years, and it didn’t cost a draft pick to get him. There are few teams out there who aren’t paying someone $5 million a season that they aren’t getting value from, and it isn’t a crippling amount for almost anyone.
And I guess that’s why it pisses me off to see the Orioles bow out on these top guys. Sano was considerably cheaper than Atkins. Five years of Chapman is costing only a little more than three combined years from Millwood and Gonzalez. The difference between Hobgood and guys like Matzek and Turner is less than Ty Wigginton’s 2010 salary. And we weren’t beat out for these guys by the Red Sox or Yankees – we’ve been outspent by the Twins and Royals and Rockies and Tigers and Reds, all of whom should have less money than the O’s.
And that’s what bothers me about the O’s this offseason. It isn’t like market inefficiencies last; as we can see, the league is adjusting to the market. Last season, Seattle was worse than we were and traded the cream of their system to us. Yet, somehow, the Mariners are a leading contender in 2010, and we’re fighting for last place with the Jays, who don’t suck either.

Eh
He got his own nice big check, and he doesn’t have to move to Kentucky to earn it.
Of course, I believe the $50M thing was 100% pure Boras BS.
I think $30M for Chapman is a little crazy. Yeah, it’s for 6 years, but how many pitchers have we given 3 year deals to and they haven’t worked out.
by CoachOfEarl on Jan 10, 2010 11:19 PM EST up reply actions
You can't compare Atkins to Sano
You’d have to compare Sano to, like, Xavier Avery or maybe Ryan Westmoreland, in which case the cheddar starts to look serious (but only relatively speaking).
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
Sure I can...
…why not?
Look, it is all a question of allocation of resources. The Orioles have finite resources, unlike some of the other teams we are competing with. Therefore, we have to optimize our allocation of resources. And I’d rather have the huge upside teen in rookie ball than the Orioles going from 75 to 77 wins with the non-tendered corner infielder.
Because one guy
is 16 years old and needs to go through a long minors stint, and might never see the majors, while the other is an established big leaguer (though only slightly above replacement level) on a one year deal. The two deals are almost completely incomparable, and certainly not mutually exclusive.
I’m done with this because none of us can really comment on the Orioles’ budget or budgetworks without massively speculating, and that isn’t debate, that’s just making stuff up.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
No.
Strasburg should shut up and be happy. He hasn’t even set foot on a major league field yet. Who knows what the future holds for him or Chapman?
Strasburg and his negotiation strategy are contributing factors to a climate that causes teams to pay outrageous amounts of money to players who have proven zero on the big league level. He is an acquiescent member of that system. He perpetuates it.
As such, he doesn’t have a right to question someone valuing another player’s potential (a player who was on the national team and played in the WBC, btw) over his potential. “Potential” is funny that way.
Even if his arm falls off tomorrow, Strasburg will never have to work another day in his life if he doesn’t want to. I don’t really think he has any right to be angry.
"I doubt he could reach [second base]...mostly cuz his fucking arm was in Aybar's nuts." – twistedlogic
Strasburg had the “dumb” luck of being born in America. If he was born in, let’s say, Spain, then he could have earned a contract on the open market. Of course, if he was born in Spain, maybe he would have never played baseball and played soccer instead. I don’t really have a point. Just rambling.
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?

not really related to anything...
but i’ve seen a couple commercials this playoff weekend and i wonder: what on earth is ellen page doing hawking microsoft networking solutions? it’s a real headscratcher from a marketing standpoint, though i certainly don’t begrudge her taking bill gates dinero.

when actors aren’t the people they are in the first movies I see them in. Unfortunately, I first saw Ellen Page in Hard Candy.

You’re really gonna judge the Saints during their coasting session? Granted the Cowgirls game was one they wanted to win, but they had a 6 game lead on the rest of the division at that point, and if the Vikes had won later that day, they would have come out and trounced the Bucs the next week, I guarantee!
