Trade Luke Scott

Please!!!! The Orioles need a SS prospect at least at Bowie. Givens is probably at least three years away if he ever succeeds. Scott is a power hitting outfielder. I’m sure he has value.

by fuddnelson on Jan 13, 2010 9:29 AM EST up reply actions

Nobody cares about a SS for Bowie

The O’s need a SS pretty badly IMO. If they can get a good one, even if he is just a prospect, I would be satisfied. I don’t care about Bowie, but if we can trade for a SS to develop like we are with Josh Bell at 3B, why not?

by fuddnelson on Jan 13, 2010 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

But, of all the gigantic gaping holes to worry about

3B, 1B, relief pitching, etc, why on earth are we worried about an A-AA shortstop? Why not just draft one this year if that’s a big concern for the future? Also, we’re not going to get a high level prospect in exchange for Luke Scott, so what’s the point?

by O'sFan21 on Jan 13, 2010 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

That’s my whole argument with Sherrill.

We’re not going to get a high level prospect in exchange for Luke Scott George Sherrill.

Maybe we did. But color me skeptical.

Don't let the sunshine fool ya. - Townes Van Zandt

by BPinOK on Jan 13, 2010 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

Except that George Sherrill

is much more valuable than Luke Scott. A dominant LH reliever who can close or be a shutdown lefty specialist who’s under contract for 3 full seasons, compared to Luke Scott? As somebody already pointed out, if somebody is in need of an OF/DH type they could just sign one of the numerous free agents still available and not have to give up anything other than cash (and maybe a pick). Why would anybody give up an actual prospect instead?

by O'sFan21 on Jan 13, 2010 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

I mean

that Sherrill was more valuable at the time the trade was made. Not necessarily that he’s more valuable in general (although I think he is).

by O'sFan21 on Jan 13, 2010 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I can see that.

I guess I’m just thinking that if it’s my team, I’m not trading my 3B of the near future for a set up guy. Which is what Sherrill was / is to them. Of course, I wouldn’t trade 5 guys for Erik Bedard either.

by BPinOK on Jan 13, 2010 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

haha true...

But on the other hand if you were a dodgers fan last year and thought you had a legitimate shot at going tot he World Series right now I might be ok with trading a 3B top prospect for a Sherrill…

by O'sFan21 on Jan 13, 2010 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

They don’t even have a 3B now do they?

And yes…I’d trade a really good prospect for a bat boy if said bat boy could help me win the title.

Don't let the sunshine fool ya. - Townes Van Zandt

by BPinOK on Jan 13, 2010 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

Is Casey Blake still their 3B?? I really have no clue.

by O'sFan21 on Jan 13, 2010 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

Casey Blake and Blake DeWitt

from the looks of their roster. Their top 10 prospects consist of only 4 position players.

  1. SS – Dee Gordon
  2. OF Andrew Lambo
  3. SS – Ivan DeJesus Jr.
  4. OF – Trayvon Robinson

So, unless they expect one of those SS’s to move over to 3rd it makes the move on their part all the more puzzling in my mind. Almost as if they didn’t think Bell could handle 3B and would eventually ahve to move to first where they already have a pretty good (although not that powerful) 1B in James Loney.

I didn’t look to see where Bell ranked on their list last year either though.

Minor League Ball

ranked Bell #10 in their system last year.

It said that reports about weight were disturbing and that he might not hit enough to play 3B.

In my mind they described him as “pillowy.”

Austin Gallagher was also rated a C+ like Bell and was actually slotted one spot above him.

Hrm. This seems like a faulty argument

You’re saying that because a relief pitcher is not inherently that valuable, the return on said pitcher must therefore not be that valuable either?

I mean, you have to look at the reports on Josh Bell and Steve Johnson and not just some preconceived bias based on the cost of adding them. That just seems like two ideas that don’t necessarily correlate at all (and certainly not when taken on their own).

"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"

The fawning over Bell has been excessive.

Recent history and past history

is littered with GMs making mistakes large and small on players and especially prospects. Not saying that anyone specific did or did not in this case, but the only argument you guys are making is this:

“The Dodgers wouldn’t give up a top 100 prospect and another guy for a reliever”

And I’m saying that based on the scouting reports and the stats available to us, they sure did. Not that Josh Bell is a top 10 guy or anything like that. He’s probably, from what I’ve read, somewhere around 75ish?

But I can only say that the reports on Bell definitely outway the uneasiness you all feel from assuming that the Dodgers are infallible in prospect evaluation.

Conan is getting the shaft

Local affiliates want to can Leno because their 11 p.m. news ratings are plummeting without a drama lead in, which means less people still have the TV on when Conan starts up, driving down his ratings, so NBC’s solution is to move Leno back to 1130?

Jay Leno is perpetuating some myth that NBC fired him from the Tonight Show when that’s not at all what happened, which I don’t know why. Because he’s salty I guess.

But whatever. I rarely watch late night shows but when I do, it’s Letterman.

Back to baseball. I like Luke Scott, but I agree that trading him would be a wise move. Too bad we didn’t trade him last July when he was impersonating Babe Ruth. Perhaps he is worth a prospect in the low minors.

I love listening David Simon, and the points he has to make are always well informed and insightful, but if you’ve done one David Simon interview, you’ve kind of done them all. He always talks about how humans are now worth less than they ever were, and he’s right and I agree with him, but it’s just that I’ve done it before.

Having said that, saw this on C-Span, and it was just a really insightful speech on the state of the media today.
