I was down with it before and down with it now
I like Joe Crede at third. Sure, he’ll get hurt and his bat hasn’t been potent for a while, but the dude can play some wicked d at the hot corner, and could help Josh Bell out when he’s reading to move up and in Spring Training. Plus, moving Atkins away from third would be a great idea. Double Plus, if he’s not hurt and productive by the trade deadline, he becomes a chip.
Crede
Okay, I’ve never seen the guy play defense so maybe I’m wrong here, but how is this an upgrade from Wiggy?
Defensively Crede and Wiggy aren't in the same league
It’s not even close. But Crede can’t hit for shit. As for Wiggy, who knows what he’ll do from year to year with the bat. He’s pretty inconsistent.

If Hwhiglingggton somehow starts regularly for us at 3rd, we will be at a point of decimation defined by
the fulfillment of a doomsday threat long made but seldom taken seriously: Nicky coming in from the bullpen.

The Yankees brought Swisher in to pitch last season...
…and they ended up winning the series. They were in a bit of a pitching jam at that point but it in no way portended doomsday.
I saw on SportsCenter one time
They some schmoe who was pitching horrible, and they chanted “WE WANT SWISHER!”

'Course not: if journeyman Swisher tore a muscle on the rubber or caught a line drive in the bicep, the Yerks
woulda been out one journeyman outfielder. If we pitched Nicky and something like that happened, Andy would probably jump off the Warehouse.
And he’d be right. Nicky’s not a shoo-in HoFer or the like, but he’s a coming All Star and your franchise’s RF for 10 yrs (@.290/250 HR), during which Swisher will play for 2-3 more teams over 4-6 yrs and peacefully retire.

Nick is more important to the O's than Swisher is to the Yanks
But I’d hardly call him a journeyman. He’s quite good.

Well, a "good journeyman", tops. C'mon, he's a lifetime .245, now with his third team (of...?)

Batting average?
I thought it was 2010, but apparently it’s still 1977 in Russia.

Funny you should bring up the BA bogeyman in a Nicky context, though: 'member how careful the team was
to get him in under the the .300 wire in ’07?

OK, maybe I WAS a little hasty in journeyman-izing Nick Swisher...
“New York Yankees right fielder Nick Swisher sure thinks highly of himself, don’t he?
The soon-to-be journeyman player was giving interviews from his posh locker at the Yankee Stadium clubhouse yesterday (nice newspaper clippings, asshole) with an obnoxious message on his computer screen that read, "Hello My Name Is Swagger." I’d imagine that if you really had swagger, people would just be able to figure it out by your demeanor and, in this case, your production on the baseball field. "
‘Course, that was Nov. 4— so maybe “soon-to-be” already “is.” Jeez, now I’m all confused. Anyway, happy journeys to Nick S., and long stay-at-home to Nick M.

Put otherwise, bringing Nicky in from the pen would signal either that
a) we really want to win this 7th game of the WS, now in its 23rd inning; or
b) we’re so godawful bad we’re leaving town anyway, so who gives a sh*t whether we put one of our best guys at risk out of position for virtually no reward.
Neither is likely, but alas, we’re probably closer to b than a at this point. And that would be pretty doomsday-ish, to my mind.

i read somewhere a while ago that the orioles seriously preferred to play atkins at first instead of third
"I doubt he could reach [second base]...mostly cuz his fucking arm was in Aybar's nuts." – twistedlogic
that's just stupid
I really can’t defend that opinion at all. His bat can play at third. It really, really, really, really cannot play at first.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
His bat can play first for a month.
Then he and Wiggy can be bench buddies.
"I'd like to do something. We all would here," he added. "As I've said before, you just don't want to do anything stupid that you're thinking in May, 'What in the God's green earth was I thinking about?'" - Andy MacPhail 12/8/09
his bat can play at first just fine
if we find somebody who’s bat is better at 3b. it doesnt matter where the bat is, as long as its there.
by twistedlogic on Jan 15, 2010 10:09 AM EST up reply actions
But Crede's bat definitely isn't
And there’s no point in having both Wigginton and Atkins on the bench – they’re basically the same dude. Wigginton would probably get waived at that point.
And if we’re only talking about a month here…man, I just don’t know. It seems like the season-long planning is fucked right now.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
agreed
i was just saying that atkins would be just fine at first if there was a good bat at 3b. you’re most correct, crede’s isn’t good enough.
by twistedlogic on Jan 15, 2010 10:21 AM EST up reply actions
Unfortunately I am not down with Crede at 3B because compared to the 1B FA still available, they would be bigger upgrades/assets. Sure Atkins may be a slight step below Crede at 3B (give or take personal opinions), but a corner infield combo of Delgado or Blalock or Uggla or Cantu + Atkins is much better than a corner infield combo or Crede + Atkins. Then again, we all can agree that by mid-season Bell will be the starting 3B anyway. Saying that last line still makes me smile about the Sherill trade.

I'm already figuring out what to say
It has to begin with something like “no hablo mucho espanol, pero yo quiro decir….” or something. I speak rudimentary spanish at work (or more like, I actually dug out spanish I and II from my mind) . I was gonna ask about his socks last year (he took them off and then began to hit) but now I just want to wish his family the best. And tell him that he was part of a fun summer that I had in my life!
I’ll probably spend this week’s down time on the job with my spanish co worker and she will help me.

Yeah after reading that article
I was thinking that may be why Pie has such an odd accent. He grew up in DR so he speaks Spanish, but growing up around his parents speaking French/creole and probably learning it himself would have an affect for sure.

do you need a hug?
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?
Man in Black: Yes.
Vizzini: Morons.
Let it play out
The Orioles signed a 1B/3B recovery project in Atkins and have two prospects who will play at AAA this spring for the same positions. LaRoche is gone and Delgado is an injury waiting to happen. I say go to spring training and see if Scot Moore can play 3B and hit like he did two springs ago. That would put Atkins or Aubrey at 1B til Snyder pushes them out. Otherwise, throw it open to competition in-house. Atkins, Snyder, Aubrey, Hughes, Wigginton, Moore, Bell, etc. See who looks like major leaguers at 1B and 3B.
Danny Cabs still has life
The White Sox have invited him to Spring Training

Thank you Josh Johnson!!!
Although, we’ll see you in Boston or New York in 2014…
Also, if Felix’s folks are from Haiti, he must also speak a bunch of French/Creole.
Trying to hit off me is like trying to eat soup with chopsticks.

Crede
The left side of the infield would be bulletproof. And he’ll be cheap, prob $2-$3M plus incentives that he might not earn. And it keeps Wiggity off of the field.
As far as the lineup, we’ll be below average at the corners, but above average at 2B and C, assuming Atkins continues to flounder or improves slightly. But isn’t that where we are now?
A defensive comparison
Player Inn E UZR/150
2009:
3B Crede 728 4 23.4
3B Wiggity 39 4 -30.2
Career:
3B Crede 7479 83 10.2
3B Wiggity 4557 69 -16.4
Yeah
that’s like, almost 3 wins difference over a full season. That ain’t the same ballpark, that ain’t even the same fucking sport.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
We should also be offensively solid across the outfield and average at DH, assuming Luke gets most of the ABs there. Not too shabby. If only our biggest offensive weaknesses weren’t at some of the most crucial positions…
