Around SBN: In Crunch Time, Spurs Don't Change Their Game

Sunday Open Thread

Since Stacey is sleeping off the exhaustion of FanFest, and I overslept for church, and z's not even on civilization time out in the Land of Ah-nuld, well, no clips today. Here's your Open Thread.

Edit by Stacey: Actually I was rounding up some news clips as duck posted this, so here you go. O's news was dominated by two things yesterday: Miguel Tejada and Fan Fest.

On Miggi:

On Fan Fest:

Manager Jimmy Dolan: [Kelly has just walked off the field in the middle of a game and Jimmy wants to fine him] Kelly's not indispensable!
Monk Lanigan: I know, but the Open Thread can't get along without him.

Give him the year at AAA if needed

MIggy means we’re in no rush to bring him up, but Miggy’s not gonna block him, either.

"in no rush"

does that imply that if we hadn’t signed a third baseman that we would rush Josh Bell? Because I don’t think that that’s true. I’m guessing that the Orioles believe he’ll most likely need to be in AAA until at least August 1 to prove himself and solve his large right handed problem one way or t’other.

What I'm saying is

when Atkins is batting .212 on June 1st, he’ll be playing 1B (or on the bench) , and not our only viable option at 3B, and we won’t be looking at Norfolk for a savior. And yeah, I think if we had stuck with the options we had on Friday at 3B, there might have been a temptation to bring up Bell sooner than needed.

you're talking about three players nobody gave a damn about

for some bizarre reason, lots of fans seem to give a damn about miggy.

and the guys above were dropped because they sucked beyond belief (eaton), sucked beyond belief and were controversial (zaun), or as a favor to them (zaun). none of them was dropped to make way for a rookie. zaun had already agreed to a backup role when he signed with the club.

i dunno, man...

it’s just as easy for me to say w/ great certainty that the o’s will act reasonably if bell is raking at the break and tejada stinks as it is for you to say they won’t. we don’t know, at this point, what kind of conversations they did or not have w/ tejada prior to signing.

and you think zaun sucked beyond belief and was controversial?

that's what i was thinking

let him play AAA for this season. miggy’s a temporary solution at 3rd, if he gets hurt near the end of the season, maybe we call him up. i think he and wiggy are gone by the end of next year so we can move up bell and brandon snyder.

This year will let us know a lot about him

If he can perform at AAA that will tell us a lot. I think in the end he’ll be a solid regular, but hes not as close as the hopeful’s here believe. Same with Snyder. I say one of the two becomes a solid regular and one does nothing, and neither does anything that useful for 3 years.

Stacey’s help notwithstanding, the fate of the republic is STILL not hanging in the balance…so maybe it’s MOVIE TIME AGAIN!!!

Shoot ’em Up (2007). Just watched this on video. Whaaa??? Rog the E. gave it…3 1/2 stars on his 4-scale! The Times’ A.O. Scott was less effusive in his praise, unless I’m misinterpreting the phrase “contemptible piece of rotting garbage.” I like Clive Owen and love Monica Belucci, and I found this tongue-deeply-in-cheek study of the choreography of flying lead stupidly riveting, as everybody in it, including the always engaging Paul Giamatti (yeah-yeah, son of), played it straight. If there’s a version of the Jackie Chan oeuvre that subs bullets for fists, this must be it. What a ride!

Flame and Citron (2008). Wow, this month’s euro-obscuro discovery packs a real wallop! The eponymously nicknamed heroes are two Danes in a WWII resistance group in Copenhagen, fighting both the Nazis and intriguers on their own side— and with almost as many bullets as Clive Owen! But this is, in fact, a reality-based drama, and quite a sobering one at that. One of its messages, after all, is that being in the resistance doesn’t necessarily make you a good guy. The two leads, Thure Lindhardt and Mads Mikkelsen (Le Chiffre from the ’06 Casino Royale) took multiple noms and awards for this, and for good reason. Stylized, violent and not always easy to take, this is outstanding filmmaking. Rent it, people.

Up in the Air (2009). Whaaa again, but for different reasons. Critical response has been almost universally laudatory, including Oscar mentions in several categories. I kept waiting for this movie to, well, take off. It’s impossible not to like Clooney, of course, but this not-comedy is also decidedly a not-drama (su-u-u-re he’s gonna talk the groom back into the wedding; oh yeah, his canned and utterly unremarkable “inspirational” back-pack speech should be getting progressively more popular; and so on). In short, a not-very-cautionary version of a cautionary tale, with one good ‘n’ astute social observation — in America they hire people to fire people…and make an innovative industry of it – has only Clooney’s appealing ambiance to carry it. And not too far, y’axe me.

.OK, heave them tomaters. And tell me ‘bout what you’ve been seeing over there in Americer.

So they’re all pissed off at some dumb ass Okie bought the team and “tried” to get a new arena built before moving it to a city that was ready to have a major league team. OKC is 8th in the NBA in attendance % and one of only a handful (8-10) that have sold over 10K season tickets. the O’s store in Camden sells MLB balls for $25, so $20 was acceptable. I would have rather had it blank so that I coulda had someone else sign it. In any event, they will find a good home amongst my bucket of gamer balls. At least I have a couple nice ones to use with my buddies when we play now.

I'd rather send the $20 straight to the Red Cross

then be insulted with a Chris Waters signed ball.

He could be incredible (unlikely), and i would still find it annoying.

Fox needs to stop constantly using its sports programming as nothing but a chance to hype its other shows. I was equally upset about the cast of Glee singing the anthem for a world series game in Philly.

by kba26 on Jan 24, 2010 7:47 PM EST up reply actions

AI went down the tubes a few seasons ago.

I mean, it never was the greatest show, but it was at least entertaining. You know what’s really annoying—and I know this will seem trivial—is when during the games they commentators are always plugging other shows. “Watch this insert show here tonight.” Like anybody who doesn’t watch the show is actually going to care whether it’s on tonight. If you like said show, you know when it’s on or you watch it on hulu.

And thanks the lord almighty that I didn’t have to listen to the national anthem during that game. Glee is the most over-hyped show on TV.

by DCO'sfan on Jan 25, 2010 7:40 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed

I love watching Peyton. I don’t think there should be any debate about if Brady or Manning is better anymore, but I know in some people’s eyes it’s more about the rings than the player himself, so I really would like to see him get at least 1 more. I can’t go against the Saints though. Besides the fact that I really genuinely like them, my gf and her family would have my head. This is the matchup i’ve been hoping for since the beginning of the playoffs though, so either way i’m happy.

by danielreese05 on Jan 25, 2010 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

I agree.

Nowadays rings don’t depend so much on the QB…on most teams, that is. After all, the Steelers have Roethlisberger, who, let’s face it, isn’t that great of a QB, but they won their Superbowls with defense. So it’s a bad measure. Manning is better QB than Brady. Brady had a more balanced team around him. For a significant chunk of his career, the Colts had a bad defense. I maintain that you can’t win a championship without at least a solid defense. So what was he supposed to do? A QB can only do so much.

by DCO'sfan on Jan 25, 2010 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

i have to say...

i’ve come around on roethlisberger quite a bit, but it really doesn’t seem right that he has two rings or even that eli manning has one. i don’t even like the eagles and i feel like mcnabb should have at least one.

McNabb is a solid QB

But the Eagles are getting old, and their fans are getting disgruntled (and Philly fans are just awful!) so I see McNabb out of a job next offseason (I think that’s when his contract is up). He’ll probably get signed somewhere else, but God forbid they start Vick. Actually, maybe not, I’m a Redskins fan.

I like him a lot, I think he’s got some real class. If he only he wasn’t on the Eagles, or I would have liked him to get a SB win a long time ago. Anyway, Eli Manning is not a very good QB. Not at all.

by DCO'sfan on Jan 25, 2010 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not getting into this again

but if you think Eli isn’t at least one of the better QB’s in the league (at least better than half of the starters), then you haven’t been watching. I’m not big on QB stats because they can vary for so many different reasons, but even the stats are saying he’s an above average QB.

by O'sFan21 on Jan 26, 2010 1:22 AM EST up reply actions

Well, just a quick google brings:

this, this , and this. But hey, the 2-4 games you see him play each year combined with your obvious bias against the team he plays for probably have led you to a deeper understanding of than these writers and someone who has watched virtually every game of his pro career.

lol

I figured you would report google searches, so let’s try a little experiment: google “Eli Manning even keeled” and “Eli Manning cry baby” and see which one gives you more hits. You can even use “even tempered” instead of even keeled and add those results to the “even keeled” results just to make it more interesting.

and again hahahahahahahahahaha

Saying 13 year olds on message boards are as valid as news outlet, siting a search result for eli maning pussy, and typing “hahahahaha” ad nauseum?

as opposed to the google results for him being even keeled?

Come on dude! Look, I think he’s a pretty decent QB (nowhere near one of the best in the league of course), but he’s a cry baby pouter. There’s really no other way around that. I’ve never even heard of anybody (even a Giants fan) arguing with that.

And how come your 3 google articles are better than my google experiment? You want me to find specific articles that reference his crybabyhood? I can do that if you want.

by O'sFan21 on Jan 26, 2010 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

Mine are "better"

because mine were from news outlets and yours were from blogs and yahoo answers. and again, I never asked “who has ever said he’s a crybbaby??”. You asked who’s ever said he was even keeled, and I provided an answer.

I didnt say that

I glanced at the results, and the 1st page was filled with message boards and blogs. Again, I dont really care. The only reason I cited it was to give you an answer to your question. I see that was a mistake.

Are you using the fact that there are facebook groups devoted to him being a crybaby as an argument? Well, ok then. Here is a facebook group that proclaims Derek Jeter is “the best player of the history”, so I guess we’re all fucked on that point. He wins.

I dont care about the opinions of some kids on facebook. All I did was answer your question. Its an opinion, so believe what you want to. Lots of people do think that. Lots of people think Jeter is the best SS of all time. Lots of people think Bush did a bang up job. Lots of people think global warming is a government conspiracy. Lots of people think dinosaurs never existed. Those are all facts. I never doubted that. I dont know why you keep trying to prove that. You asked who has said he was even keeled, and I showed you examples. Obviously there will be opinions either way (as evidenced by this very argument). Neither proves anything except that people feel strongly both ways. The difference is you asked, I did not. I just dont get why you are trying to prove something to me that I already obviously knew to be true. Yes, some people think he is a cry baby. Congrats.

And yes, I find 2 year old news articles more valid than the opinions of someone on yahoo answers saying “Eli sucks GO COWBOYSS111”

by daveh873 on Jan 26, 2010 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think his demeanor has changed at all.

I think he was a crybaby two years ago and he’s a crybaby today. The reason is that he pouts and whines whenever something bad happens (his fault or not). That’s why people join facebook groups calling him a pussy.

by O'sFan21 on Jan 26, 2010 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

I didnt ask if you opinion has changed

why do you feel obligated to change the subject to fit with your opinion? He was saying the articles were invalid because they were 2 years old. I’m saying if they felt that way 2 years ago, is it really likely that they have completely changed the way they feel about him now? And I still dont care why people join facebook groups. People join facebook groups for all sorts of idiotic reasons. That doesn’t make them right, and it definitely doesn’t lend itself to their being intelligent.

by daveh873 on Jan 26, 2010 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't change the subject.

Just injected my opinion on it. Why are you getting so defensive about it? Is he your buddy or something?

Why are the journalists’ opinions of him any more or less valid than the fans who watch him play?

by O'sFan21 on Jan 26, 2010 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not defensive

maybe it seems that way because I have to defend my position to multiple people at the same time, but I’m just trying to get my point across without it being continuously twisted around. And I think the journalists opinions are a bit more valid because the people that write things like “Eli is a pussy” aren’t “the fans”, they are haters and usually Cowboys, Eagles, or Redskins fans. At least journalists are expected to try to be subjective. Fans, for the most part, are no where near that. As far as the part about “the fans who watch him play”, i’d imagine the pople who see him the most are Giants fans and journalists who cover him. I sure as hell dont watch every game of every team.

by daveh873 on Jan 26, 2010 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

But they're not haters!

They are just football fans who see him throwing his hands up in the air every time he overthrows a receiver, pouting as he walks to the sidelines, and looking like he’s going to cry on the bench after throwing an interception.

Journalists being subjective…that’s a good one…

What has changed, exactly?

Over the past 2 years, what has changed? He led his team to the best record in the NFC the season before last, and then last season, while his team obviously did not perform well, still managed to put up above average numbers in every statistical catagory. I only cited those articles because he asked where anyone has said that and those were the 1st three articles that came up in a quick search. If you want to argue, you could attempt to not be a complete ass while doing so. It isn’t exactly difficult to type “bwahahahaha” after everything you type to make it look like i’m a moron, yet you and your buddy there keep doing so.

I don’t want to argue, actually. I found your original statement absurd. ABSURD. That’s not exaggeration.

We could try to argue it, but it’s a subjective assertion, and can’t really be proven one way or the other….“He’s generally regarded as the most even keeled qb in the NFL”? That’s not something that either one of us can quantify. Plus, it has a huge qualifier in it (“generally regarded”), and anyone with the Google could find plenty of examples supporting either side.

I just find it to be an overwhelmingly, hilariously laughable statement: one that speaks volumes to me about the way Giants fans see their players vs. the way the rest of the country does (of course, this could be written about virtually any team with its home fans, but since the NYC media market is so huge, Giant homerism seems magnified. It’s kind of like how the LA media twisted themselves into pretzels last year to argue why Kobe should have been MVP over LeBron).

I don’t know why the hilarity it affords me bothers you so much, but it’s a little ridiculous for you to call me “a complete ass” for laughing when I find something funny.

"I doubt he could reach [second base]...mostly cuz his fucking arm was in Aybar's nuts." – twistedlogic

by zknower on Jan 26, 2010 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

You say it's ABSURD

but you say yourself anyone can find examples of it supporting either side, leading me to believe it’s not all that absurd at all. You go on to say its laughable because its the way Giants fans see their players, but did you ever think that maybe it’s the way you, as a Redskins fan, see your rival teams’ players and fans? The only two people that took such huge exception with what I had to say were both Redskins fans.

And for what it’s worth, I dont think you are an ass, I just find it assinine to openly laugh at someone’s opinion and make a mockery of it. I think it’s low and disrespectful, and I called you out on that. I think you’re a good guy, and I think you’re a pretty bright guy too. I just think its disrespectful and somewhat childish to retort with something like that, and I said something about it.

by daveh873 on Jan 26, 2010 6:45 PM EST up reply actions

You didn't say it as YOUR opinion

You said it as a generally accepted fact. That was the part that was funny. If you had said “I think Eli’s one of the most even keeled QBs in the league.” it still would have been ridiculous, but not as ridiculous as saying it as if it was some generally accepted view.

by O'sFan21 on Jan 26, 2010 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

Well, I guess we see things differently

Maybe its a product of living in his home market. Maybe it’s a product of you living in a rival market. In the end it doesnt really matter.

what O'sfan21 said
I just find it assinine to openly laugh at someone’s opinion and make a mockery of it.

If you had said, “I think he’s the most even-keeled qb in football”, I would have had a much more respectful reaction, because to burst out laughing at that would have been rude to you.

but that’s not what you said. what you said was,

he’s only generally regarded as the most even keeled qb in the NFL

It’s not just a gross generalization; nor is it just (in my opinion) inaccurate; it’s also really arrogant because of the “only” in there.

“He’s only generally regarded….” is an in-your-face way of stating something. You can’t ratchet up that much rhetoric and not expect someone to respond to it.

Try a different situation:

If I say, “I think LA is the best place to live in this country”, you’re gonna disagree with me and lay out your points why. But if I say, “LA is only generally regarded as the best place to live in this country”, don’t you find yourself suppressing a smirk as you prepare your response?

that changes this year. i am def a member of the let campbell go lobby. i am also glad eli isnt the skins qb (especially considering the kinda money danny would throw at him). nothing to do with whether or not hes a crybaby or whatever. hes oodles better than jason campbell, but hes being way overpaid to be just above average.

by twistedlogic on Jan 26, 2010 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

Eh

how can you even make a judgment of how good Campbell is or isn’t? He’s never played with even an average offensive line, he’s never played with good receivers, and he’s never played in a consistent offensive system that makes sense for the tools the team has. And despite all that he’s still managed to be a league average QB. Give him some protection, a little bit of a running game to pass off of, and another decent receiver to go with these young guys and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a top 10 QB.

I’d prefer they don’t waste trade chips or draft picks on a QB and instead focus on the line and another receiver.

new regimes generally like new qbs

i agree that the skins have so many issues, its hard to say whether or not campbell is a decent qb, but i just dont think hes got the ability to consistently run the offense at a high level. makes too many poor decisions, doesnt really play well in the “pocket” (in quotations because its hard to call what their OL produces a pocket), and has never learned to protect the football.

by twistedlogic on Jan 26, 2010 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

I mean I agree with most of those assessments, but I think a lot of them can be attributed to being in such a rush to get rid of the damn ball or make something happen because he’s about to get killed and because he’s never gotten a chance to get comfortable in a system. I just think when you have so many holes to fill, why focus on the position that’s played decently amid a ton of challenges that you are hopefully going to eliminate?

by O'sFan21 on Jan 26, 2010 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

because hes an RFA this year

hes going to want a long term deal and plenty of $$$. if you’re going to cough up the kinda money that he’ll command, he had better be the guy you want under center for the next 5 or so years.

by twistedlogic on Jan 26, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

forgot about the RFA part

several teams (bills, browns, rams, seahawks, etc) need qbs. the draft is interesting this year since both bradford and clausen have injury concerns. if any of those teams think that bradford and clausen are too risky, they’ll be willing to pay more for a guy like campbell which could raise his asking price even more.

by twistedlogic on Jan 26, 2010 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

He's not going to command serious money.

And who cares about the next five years? It’s not a baseball contract – if he gets worse next year you just cut him.

by O'sFan21 on Jan 26, 2010 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

i think he'll command quite a bit

and you still incur cap penalties for releasing players. not really something the skins can afford with their cap management.

by twistedlogic on Jan 26, 2010 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

but

can they afford to add QB to the list of holes they need to fill?? If they waste a draft pick on a QB then they just have to go elsewhere for lineman, a receiver, and probably a DB – all of those are either going to require other draft picks, trades, or FA signings which will hurt the cap space as well.

by O'sFan21 on Jan 26, 2010 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

no they cant

but its an unfortunate truth.

by twistedlogic on Jan 26, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

right so

why add another position to the list?

by O'sFan21 on Jan 26, 2010 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

because they actually need a qb

the offensive line wont be much improved (even with a top 5 rookie OL) so you better have somebody who can hold on to the damn ball when he gets hit.

by twistedlogic on Jan 26, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

Well I think they should trade cooley for more picks and get a couple OLmen.

Joe Flacco's done pretty well

with exactly one NFL-quality receiver to throw to.

and a line

You can do without one, but not both.

Ravens didn't have much of a line in 2008

yet they made it to the AFC Champ game.

Well

they allowed 5 fewer sacks and rushed for 300 more yards that year, so that tells me they had at least a somewhat better O-line than the Skins.

I have no problem admitting when I’m wrong. It doesn’t mean I’m ignoring you. I’m not sitting in front of this screen all day. My quick response above was in reply to your saying I somehow “hate” Manning, which was a ridiculous accusation on your part, and therefore most important to me to rebut. So just to be clear:

  1. I was wrong, about the number of teams in the NFL. Big whoop. There were 30 for a very long time, IIRC. Nonetheless, I repeat that I was wrong.
  2. I was also wrong about Eli’s standing. I ran the numbers on this some other time in the last year and he was closer to the middle of the pack. The fact that he’s around 11th in stats supports your argument that he’s better than average. It also supports the idea that he is grossly overpayed. And to some (myself included), it supports the idea that he is “average” (in the prosaic sense, not the statistical sense) in that anyone who isn’t breaking the top ten is not particularly special.
  3. I would TRULY much rather have Campbell playing for me than Manning and I hope to see him at the helm of the ‘Skins for a while. Manning has had the same talented team, offensive system, and coach around him for several years now, and yet he doesn’t perform consistently: I think he’s pretty much maxed his potential. Conversely, Campbell has never the same coach or offensive scheme for more than two years, has never played behind a decent O-line, and has never had more than one decent receiver to throw to. Despite this, and the fact that he has started two fewer years in the league than Manning, he has put up comparable numbers to Manning every year. I think he hasn’t even touched his potential.

1. ignore
2. ignore
3. NO. can the skins PLEASE get a real qb. campbell wasnt a good pocket passer even when the skins were creating a pocket for him. plus he’ll never learn how to tuck the ball when hes getting hit.

by twistedlogic on Jan 26, 2010 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

why not revisit this question one year from now?

when he’s had a real head coach who builds to his strengths?

if he sucks this year, cut him loose in 2011. if he excels this year (as i suspect he will), no harm no foul.

nobosdy coming out of college is going to play better this year than campbell, and i don’t think there are a bunch of veterans drifting around who’d be an improvement either. please don’t tell me you’re in the chad pennington camp.

cuz hes an RFA this year

if hes smart, he wont sign a 1 year deal when there is a new coach coming in. plus i’m fully expecting shanny to get fired shortly anyways. its just the danny way.

and no, i’m not part of the chad pennington lobby.

by twistedlogic on Jan 26, 2010 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

Why are you so worried about his protecting the ball?

He only had 3 more fumbles than Drew Brees, only two more than Donovan McNabb and Aaron Rodgers, and the same amount as Eli Manning and Kurt Warner. Given that he was sacked more than any of them except for Rodgers (8 times more than McNabb, 13 times more than Eli, 19 times more than Warner, and 23 times more than Brees), it seems like he’s pretty decent at holding onto the ball to me.

see above dude

its a widely accepted fact that jason campbell just isnt good :-)

Wow! You guys produced 80+ comments all b/c Eli Mannings stinks? I’m impressed!

Nobody else thought the officials just gave the Saints that game?

I thought that PI was clearly uncatchable and that “completion” was clearly not secured when it hit the ground.

by O'sFan21 on Jan 24, 2010 11:20 PM EST reply actions

I thought

the PI was close enough to call and that there wasn’t definitive evidence that the catch was actually incomplete, so they couldn’t overturn it. I think either of those calls could have gone either way though.

by daveh873 on Jan 24, 2010 11:29 PM EST up reply actions

The PI I could sort of go either way on, but I thought that “catch” was OBVIOUSLY not a catch. He was juggling it the whole time and then you could clearly see it move down his leg when he hit the ground. I was watching with 6 people and we were all positive it would be overturned. I honestly don’t see how they didn’t overturn it unless they weren’t seeing the same camera angles everybody else was.

that pass interference on lieber there at the end was crap

but hey, if i were an official in NO, i’d be afraid to not hand the saints the game too
