Dear MASNSports.com,
“Effect” is a noun, “affect” is a verb. Very mild shame on duck for perpetuating the error. Sorry, it’s just like nails on a blackboard for me, I know that grammar fascism is frowned upon.
better yet
my wife’s students write papers in “text”. one student failed for writing wtf. I didn’s see the problem beings it was a stupid assignment. Much like Miggy running to first on a routine grounder – had to keep it somewhat on topic.
I'm so using this as leverage for my "I want a phone " argument.

it all depends on what jeremy said
…and what the reporter heard. while correct pronunciation of the two is similar, it’s not identical.
if jeremy used a short “e” instead of a schwa, then the MASN reporter was doing his/her job. except it should have been written thusly:

Dave Cameron
I’m usually not a big fan of Cameron’s writing (his tone more than his content), but his Fangraphs article on the O’s offseason is pretty close to my feelings.
I’m totally on board with the strategy of not blocking prospects by signing players from a mediocre free agent class to long-term deals. Good job on that one, Andy.
On the other hand, it would’ve been nice if even one of those stopgaps had some serious upside that would help the O’s in 2011 or beyond. The O’s have a nice base of young talent, but they are going to need a lot more to ever compete in the AL East, and Andy did absolutely nothing to add to that talent base for the long term.
The offseason’s not over yet, but if Andy is done, consider me a bit disappointed.
I agree with Cameron
but I’m not sure who we really could have gone out there and gotten as a long-term solution. Adrian Beltre? That’d be a risky investment, moreso in the face of Josh Bell’s potential rise. There weren’t any first basemen worth gaining, nor ace pitchers, third basemen, or shortstops. It was a weak free agent class except in the outfield. Now, yeah, we could have spent the money we spent on Garret Atkins and Mike Gonzalez on Aroldis Chapman…and I’m sorry we didn’t…but other than that (and it’s no guarantee we’d win his services anyway), I’m not entirely sure what the Orioles were supposed to do to help long-term.
Not that I like their short-term moves. The two previously mentioned things are still getting on my nerves whenever I think about them.
Also: Why is it that only Jeremy Guthrie seems to understand that just bringing in another pitcher doesn’t “slide him down” and “take the burden off of him”? Sheesh, some people’s sportswriting children…
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
agreed
It’s hard to find someone that a) won’t block prospects and b) has upside for helping out in the future, especially this year. Tejada obviously won’t help in the future, but it is possible he’d block Bell for a good portion of the year, unless he plays well enough to trade. In reality though, he shouldn’t complain, he’s lucky he got what we gave him.
Atkins though I think fills both a and b. Worst case scenario is that he is worse than last year and we don’t have to pay him again/ plenty of room for Brandon to come up when ready. If he returns to 2008 form, albeit unlikely, we can trade for more prospects which would help for the future or we have the not so bad problem of having too much talent at another position. I don’t know about the rest of you, but after the last decade I could use that problem.
Garret Atkins' best case scenario
is that he hits like .270/.330/.410. I don’t think there’s gonna be anybody willing to give the Orioles some top talent for two months of that kind of batting line (not to mention the inevitable home/road splits). And that’s the best case scenario.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
True
nobody is giving up top talent for atkins, I’m just saying that he has some possible upside beyond next season. emphasis on possible.
Atkins is my favorite acquisition of the winter
That’s not saying much, but Atkins is the youngest, has shown an ability to hit in the (distant past) and is under contract for another season if he does blow up in a good way.
I don’t fault the O’s for passing on the big name free agents, but they could have tried to find the next Carlos Pena, David Ortiz, or even Jeremy Guthrie – someone available for cheap or free who would be under club control for a long time.

Yes, completely agree. A push for Brandon Wood would have been nice.
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?

Atkins best case scenario
is a bit better than .270. Until last year, he had only once been under .300 and always 20+ Hrs. If and I do mean IF he can refind his stroke with Crowley, he could be a useful ballplayer even at 1B. IMO.
Chapman wasn't the only international FA available
Noel Arguelles would have been a nice signing. Wagner Mateo is still out there.

it was correctly noted that beltre turned down at least one offer for multiple years and more $ to take the offer from the red sox. i mean, once all’s said and done it’s easy to say that the FO SHOULD have gone after player x.

A little hard on Guthrie there...
What is he supposed to say? He’s responding to speculation that having Millwood in the rotation will make it easier for him to pitch next year. It’s the question that is stupid, not the answer. Guthrie provided about as good a response as could be expected considering the question. I would be worried about him if he had answered differently.

FanGraphs doesn’t really get the Orioles offseason moves.
Yeah, I’m not sure what Dave Cameron had in mind. That wasn’t a lot of impact talent on the free agent market that fits the O’s needs. Although I do agree with, “Instead, they ended up spending $25 million in 2010 (and $6M in 2011) to acquire Kevin Millwood, Garrett Atkins, Miguel Tejada, and Mike Gonzalez. They filled four holes, but the return on investment seems… underwhelming.” $25M is a lot of money to finish 4th, probably 5th, in the AL east. We could finish 4th or 5th next year w/o Millwood and et al. and put that money toward Chapman.

McGowen, Romero, and Brett Cecil were all first/supplemental picks. Not to mention Brandon Morrow who was recently acquired from Seattle.
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?
Man in Black: Yes.
Vizzini: Morons.
You could say the same
thing about Brad Bergesen, Nolan Reimold, and Felix Pie.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
what do Nolan Reimold and Felic Pie have to do with pitchers?
And Pie was a huge prospect until about 2 years ago.
They weren't exactly
considered “highly regarded prospects” recently, and then performed well. If you’re suggesting that Toronto will completely flop because their team leans on too many of those kinds of guys, you’re also saying the Orioles will flop a little bit, too.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
Only sort of.
We also have 3 gigantic prospects (Jesus, Matusz, and Tillman) and actually made upgrades elsewhere (closer, SP, and corner IF). They’ve lost their best starter and added a sort of starter/sort of reliever right?
Yeah, I'm just playing Devil's Advocate with you
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
I mean I guess
those guys are more highly regarded than I realized, but I would still be incredibly disappointed if we’re not better than them this year.
Me, too
but it’s not totally outside the realm of possibility.
But really: I want to see the Orioles improve, at least to 77 wins. I couldn’t care less what everyone else does (except the Yankees. I hope they win approximately 0 games).
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
IF their pitching stays healthy, the Jay will be decent and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they finished ahead of us. Lind, Snider, and Hill are all nice hitters. And the Jays have typically been an excellent run prevention team. Finishing below them shouldn’t be a mark of shame.
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?
Man in Black: Yes.
Vizzini: Morons.
Without Halladay
they’re probably looking at around 70 wins. That’s just a huge blow to their team. But of course those young guys can always make up the difference quickly.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
I actually meant 75
sorry. Brain fart. But, yeah, the Orioles should be better than the Blue Jays – but it shouldn’t be something to put any thought into at all.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
They certainly won’t replicate their 2009 seasons, but they’re very good players. That I feel comfortable in saying.
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?
Man in Black: Yes.
Vizzini: Morons.
i can agree with that
lind moreso than hill IMO
by twistedlogic on Jan 26, 2010 3:37 PM EST up reply actions
Well yeah, unless you fall off a cliff, you’ll be well regarded as a first round pick. Look at how much rope Billy Rowell is given. In any case, some of those were more highly regarded than others, but they were all considered decent or good prospects. Romero is the most interesting case because he was chosen directly in front of Troy Tulowitzki and he scuffled a bit at times in the minors leading to many complaints. So he was least regarded out of that bunch. But McGowen and Cecil were certainly considered very good prospect with Romero and Marcum tailing behind.
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?
Man in Black: Yes.
Vizzini: Morons.
Not to mention, Morrow has been well regarded as well, but he’s been seen as being jerked around Seattle. He hasn’t been given a true chance to pitch in the rotation yet. And player position wise, Snider and Lind were very well regarded. And, of course, Aaron Hill is a beast. The Jays have a very nice core of young players. I wouldn’t underestimate them.
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?
Man in Black: Yes.
Vizzini: Morons.
Eh
Lind was good this year, but he was nothing special the two years before and I had never seen him listed in the top 50 prospects or anything.
Hill has big dropoff written all over him. The guy just randomly doubles his career high in HR and adds 40 points in OPS to his career high?
Just a quick search of one reviewer...
…but Sickels had Lind as the Jays #1 prospect in 2007, and the 17th hitting prospect in all of baseball. So he didn’t come out of nowhere.
Lind was good this year, but he was nothing special the two years before and I had never seen him listed in the top 50 prospects or anything.
Lind was an A- prospect in 2007 and was most certainly listed a as top 50 prospect (although I haven’t double checked).
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?

Ok...
and in 2007 he had an OPS of .678 in 300+ ABs and in 2008 he had an OPS of .785 in 350 ABs. You’re telling me you think his 2009 OPS of .932 is reasonable to expect going forward?
Who are we talking about? I’m not what reasonable to expect going forward. I would check ZiPs for that. I’m just the Jays have a lot good young talent. I haven’t even mentioned the guys they picked for Halladay.
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?
Man in Black: Yes.
Vizzini: Morons.
Those were his age 23 and 24 seasons
Maybe a .932 OPS is a bit much, but yes, it’s very reasonable to see him as a .850 OPS player going forward.
oh, we’re talking about Lind. Then yes, I agree with James F. His defense is weak but his bat is perfectly good. Given his age, .850 OPS is sounds very reasonable with another one or two .932ish OPS seasons in him down the road.

Hey, we're paying Kevin Millwood 9 million
I’d take a bet that Sheets’ll outperform Millwood for roughly the same amount of money.
Maybe this is just that we overpaid, too, but still

I'd take that bet
because there’s a really good chance Sheets ends up on the DL for a chunk of time this year.

Even so
Sheets is just that much better of a pitcher, and he’s younger. If Millwood throws 160 innings, and Sheets throws 120 innings at their expected levels – Sheets wins easily. Especially considering the parks they are in and the divisions.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"

Talking about the 2006 rate going up relative to the 2005 rate doesn’t exclude the rate still being down when compared to 1991. It’s all about where you set the bar. Lies, damn lies, and statistics, after all.
It is curious that the “most recent” is 2006. Does it take three years to collect all that data and write a report about it? Maybe it was a typo but they used 2006 several times.
I actually wouldn’t have a hard time believing that it takes a year if they’re independently verifying all the data – probably meaning trying to shake documents out of the states and counties and municipalities.

There’s minimal logic in that, because if Tejada’s really hot the first half of the season, we could get basically get a couple top 20 prospects (in that organazation) for him. Or one or top 10’s.
