Why on earth not?

Whether you like the signing or not
I don’t see it as black and white as you guys do. It has its pro and it has its cons.

lmao
The looks on his face, for less than a second, when he was about to respond to the Josh Bell question before being interrupted was hilarious. I was really curious to hear what he had to say.

and what was his answer?

A reporter asks
“The Orioles have a AAA prospect named Josh Bell whom you’re probably already aware of. There’s a possibility he could come up in the middle of the year, and that might be a situation for you. Have you thought about what could happen there and would you be willing to switch roles or be a part-time player for this team?”
Andy interrupts:
“The kind of deal that we structured with Miguel, I don’t really know that I would anticipate that we would make the kind of deal we made with him and not have him play every day. I think you can put that one to bed. If he’s healthy, he’s going to be out there ‘cause that’s the way he’s gonna insist on it, so I think that scenario has been deemed unlikely by subsequent events.”

Well look
I’m in the Josh Bell camp as much as anyone. But he needs to first of all play well at AAA and work out his right-handed issues. If Tejada can’t be traded away (or doesn’t get hurt), it’s not the absolute worst thing in the world to have Bell keep getting seasoning for another two months and then coming up in September.
Of course, IF we get to the point where Bell is going all Nolan Reimold on the so-called “International” League and Tejada is giving us league-average work, then it will be the right time to get all upset. But not before.

that's a good analysis
I think he’s farther off than people think, I still wanted to see him come up around late july to mid august and with tejada I don’t think that’s going to be possible.

Good summary.
I’m hoping we have what turns out to be an above average ML 3B man in Bell. But I’m not assuming that to be a given. Right now I think it is safe to say that Tejada is much more of a proven commodity.

There's also no reason...
…why Bell couldn’t DH or play first on days when Miggy is in the field. It would hardly be unheard of for a top prospect to get his initial playing time at something other than his ultimate position.
by James F on Jan 26, 2010 8:05 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If Miggy is performing well, he’ll more than happy to accept a trade to a contender in order to accommodate Bell, assuming he’s tearing up AAA.

flip tejada for prospects again if he gets hot near the trade deadline, this bell moves in almost naturally..

I heard Tejada can't be traded
It was on this site yesterday that he got a no trade clause. I hope that was wrong.
by fuddnelson on Jan 27, 2010 9:34 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
he’ll waive it to go to a contender. the no-trade just gives him leverage to pick his new team. it doesn’t mean he’ll want to stay.

I'm in the this is a fine move camp
The O’s aren’t going to compete for anything than maybe 4th place. The O’s were between a rock and a hard place this winter. Another dismal season and attendance will continue to plummet, especially in this prolonged economic slump. The FA market wasn’t very strong, and none of the big names considered Baltimore.
If the youngsters start panning out, they will generate some excitement. The O’s are hoping a bunch of league average (give or take) players will help accumulate some wins should the young guys produce. They got one pitcher to help eat some innings, took a chance that Atkins has some upside left, and a closer who might be adequate. Miggy’s bat should help get a few more wins (assuming his defense is adequate). If the O’s can get 75 wins the fans will come. If they even flirt with .500, the fans will probably go apeshit.
My 2010 hope is Jones, Wieters, Reimold, Bergesen, Matusz, Tillman, etc. put MacPhail on the spot and force him to make some moves to take the team to the next level. Force the guy’s hand and let us see the real “plan”. Miggy’s just reasonable filler while we hope it all happens.
Miggy also came back to Baltimore. He was miserable at the tail end of his last stint. Either there was no other interest or maybe Baltimore just might be shedding the image as the place of last resort.

I think this move is ok. If Josh Bell sets the world on fire at AAA (and I hope he does!) well, then Tejada will hopefully be tradeable. I don’t think he’ll be on the team next year. Hopefully on a one-year deal, playing for his next contract he won’t be sulking.
by BrianS on Jan 26, 2010 7:06 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
no one's worried about that scenario
the scenario we’re worried about is bell tearing it up and tejada sucking ass and NOT being tradeable.

And just for the record...
…I thought Miggy was spelled with one “i” and one “y”. When did he get two "i"s? Is this like a Gandalf the Grey and Gandalf the White kinda thing?
by Jonny Pops on Jan 26, 2010 10:04 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Miggi has always spelled it with two "i"s
most people just get it wrong.

In Spanish
The “i” is pronounced like an “e.” Where he is from it is pronounced mEguel. So Latino’s pronounce it mEggE, hence Miggi. It would be easier to explain in person.

Its a one year deal. So Josh Bell waits a couple of months, so what.

I got you....
…I’ve been to Mexico several times and I know they’re not too bit on the letter Y down there.
Still in Estados Unidos using an “i” instead of a “y” in a name like “Miggi” makes it seem more feminine. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just you would probably expect it spelled “Miggy”, especially for a male name.

My guess is #7 or #11, I don’t really have a reason but those are my guesses.

To be clear
It isn’t officially retired, but I think they reserve it in honor of Cal Sr. Tejada certainly isn’t goin to be the one they give that up for. Maybe if Ryan gets drafted by the O’s (if he even gets into baseball) he’ll wear it, but I don’t see them giving it to anyone else.

Yea, I thought about that when I said 7 but who knows. Miggy might go with something off the wall like 90, I personally like the #75.

Wondering the same thing...
Obviously, Jones is now entrenched in 10, 4 is gone, 14 maybe if Reimold gives it up, 20 is gone, Juan Samuel wears 11, but he’s a base coach so he can give it up (Dempsey would be the only one who I would say he shouldn’t give up his number). 11 seems logical. Or 15 or 28.
Basically, I have no idea.
