Pecota ratings

I really have a hard time believing the Pecota ratings. They have a pretty good track record and I mostly agree with their methodology, but 93 wins for MFY? They added Vazquez and Granderson and lost nothing. The Nats will not win 82 games next year. They didn’t add anything except for Stasburg. I don’t have subscription anymore, but I don’t see how these projections can possibly be reasonable.

by uneasy rider on Jan 29, 2010 7:59 AM EST reply actions

I don't really agree with some of their depth chart stuff either

For example for right field they give 90% of the playing time to Markakis, which makes sense, but then 5% to Wiggy and 5% to Pie. Wiggy in RF? Pie could do it in a pinch but you’d have to think that Reimold is the backup RF given that was his position in the minors. Wiggy has played 1 inning of RF in his career according to BR, back in 2007 and never played there once in the minors.

I haven’t had a chance to really look at them yet though. Hopefully today will be slow at work and I can take a glance.

also

one thing to make note of about the Yankees is that they won 103 in 2009 by their pythag was for 95 wins and you have to take into account improvements made by the Orioles and Red Sox in 2010 in their win totals. They’re projecting 15 more wins for the Orioles in 2010, they have to come from somewhere. I have no beef with the Yankees projection, although I don’t think there’s a chance in hell the Rays win the division.

see...

they were kinda lucky as hell, right? i mean, look at burnett and joba’s WHIPs, then look at their ERAs. joba is maybe sort of in line, but burnett was more than a little lucky, not too mention that he was actually sort of healthy last year.

offensively, i think one would’ve said at the outset of last year that it would be highly unlikely that damon, jeter, godzilla and posada would have such silly seasons in their mid/late 30s.

i think nick johnson is a an okay signing for them b/c he’s a great hitter and a good defender, but what are the odds of him playing more than 100 games?

…sort of why i thought he would have been so good for the o’s!

2008 AL East Standing

Tampa Bay Rays – 97 65
Boston Red Sox – 95 67
New York Yankees – 89 73

Doesn’t seem so odd to me. What caught my attention was the 76-86 record from the Angels.

Yeah it's pretty laughable

They have the Nats allowing 757 runs, best in the NL East and third best in the NL. I mean, seriously? Lannan is decent but nothing special. Jordan Zimmermann won’t pitch in 2010. They give Strasburg a projected VORP of 31.2? I mean I know he’s this phenom or whatever but it’ll be his first chance in the majors ever.

However the Mets are going to be putrid. That can only help the Nats out.

as much as we love Matt Wieters and all…we don’t really know squat about the guy. Like, we all Brian Roberts lives in Arizona and loves golf and the Bible and his bulldog and is best-friends with Nick Markakis and is married to a model, and had heart problems as a child.

Also,

if he weren’t playing baseball, he’d want to be a coach, his favorite place he’s ever visited outside of the US is Japan, the retired player he would have most liked to play against is Greg Maddux, and his best halloween costume was Superman (though I’d argue Superman’s best costume was probably Matt Wieters, but I digress…). Billy Joel, MSG, Dec. 31st, 1999 – Jan 1st, 2000. Just awesome.

by daveh873 on Jan 29, 2010 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

Oh I know it

i’m a bit Billy obsessive. I don’t know how many shows i’ve been to, but all of them were great (at least to me). He may have lost a bit of range and become the butt of alot of jokes on late night, but the guy can still tear it up on piano, and his voice is still damn strong.

by daveh873 on Jan 29, 2010 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah definitely

He also just creates a great experience. I’ve only seen him twice – once with Elton John and once solo. Both times were great.

by O'sFan21 on Jan 29, 2010 6:21 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

though, again, i’m biased. I saw him with Elton once where it was just the two of them and their pianos. I like Elton fine, but that proved to me once and for all how superior of an all around musician and performer Billy is. Elton has a way of coming across as arrogant, while Billy just always seems like he’s having fun.

Ok, i’m going to stop on the Billy stuff. I get carried away sometimes.

by daveh873 on Jan 29, 2010 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

haha

I’m a big fan of both. For a long time I liked Billy Joel a lot more than Elton, but Elton has been growing on me more and more.

I've also seen Billy Joel twice

The first time was just him, the second time with Elton John. I thought both concerts were amazing. My first concert was…1996? It was towards the end of high school, and the 2nd was in 2002. I prefer Billy Joel to Elton John but I thought Elton was great.

Elton is great

don’t get me wrong. Billy hust has him beat by a ton, but thats just my opinion.

by daveh873 on Jan 29, 2010 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

I think

Billy Joel’s music is more instantly likeable if that makes sense. Tons of his songs are just instantly catchy and awesome. I think sometimes Elton John’s music takes a few more listens before it’s as likeable. It’s a little more subtle I think.

by O'sFan21 on Jan 29, 2010 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely understandable

He has some great stuff. He’s the equivalent of a DH though. Sure, he can write some insane piano parts, but he can’t even write his own lyrics. He’s damn good at what he does, but he isn’t the complete package that Joel is. He is by all means a great technical pianist though. Alot of Billy’s stuff is, as you said, instantly likeable catchy pop stuff. Alot of his non hits are great in the same way as Elton’s though. It may take a few listens to get all the nuances, but its amazing stuff.

by daveh873 on Jan 30, 2010 12:04 AM EST up reply actions

that's right

I always forget that Elton doesn’t write most of his own lyrics – that’s definitely a point in Billy’s direction.

by O'sFan21 on Jan 30, 2010 12:17 AM EST up reply actions

Yep

In fact, I don’t know any songs he wrote the lyrics for (maybe candle in the wind?), but i’m not an expert on Elton by any means. Bernie Taupin is a pretty damn good writer though.

I was offered free front-row tickets to an Elton John concert in Moscow in 1994 (or ’95). And turned them down, of course. I mean, they refused to pay me!

Actually, I would’ve gone except for one thing: the tix came with, ahem, instructions. I was told — by an embassy guy who had been assigned to disribute the tix, admittedly, not by someone directly connected with the artist or the concert — that “Mr. John really needs the front-row people to react with visible excitement during the performance, their energy helps him perform at his best during the concert.”

What, I’m s’posed to jump up and down yelling during, I dunno, “Goodbye Norma Jean” or something?

Anyway, even freebie tix to a concert by a guy who hadn’t done anything of interest since what, 1973 (or whenever Yellow Brick Road came out— which is an excellent album) shouldn’t come with instructions on how to be a fan.

What I remember thinking at the time was rather more blunt, actually: the nerve of the guy— f*ck that sh*t.

mets putrid?

how so? that’s a pretty good team when I look at it. I get that the starting pitching isn’t phenomenal but the BP got better and besides, santana can carry a team pretty well on his own. the offense is loaded this year with all of the guys coming back from injury like reyes and beltran who figure to be at least half as good as they were. reyes will have a field day with that parks weird dimensions.

Sorry about misinterpreting your comment but I read the above and thought you thought the AL East projection as crazy.

You wouldn’t believe the amount of commemorative stuff appearing in print, on the air and in theaters for this anniversary— much of it so far above the level of what’s normally published, televised and performed here that I’ve been astonished. What could possibly be new or innovative about Chekhov, you ask yourself— and then you find out. Holy crap!

I s’pose that’s part of what goes into the definition of a classic: the material lends itself wonderfully to reinvention by artists of very different kinds, and thence to new appreciations by us art-consuming proles. Good deal!

Chekhov is a God.

The man basically invented subtext. Or if he didn’t he certainly put it on the map.

I used to date a literature major

One time I made a comment to her about “Chekhov’s Gun” and she had no idea what I was talking about.

Now, don’t ask me why this relationship lasted for two years.

This isn’t chekhov related, but I dated a girl for 3 years and looking back it’s hard for me to think of a single thing that we could have possibly talked about. Your comment just made me think of that.

I’m reading something else between the lines there. I suspect Trembley/MacPhail wanted to run a tighter ship this year. This was a politically easier way to keep Rick Demspey from whispering in the kids’ ears.

Keith Law has Britton...

…as the 25th best prospect in all of baseball. That’s easily the most aggressive ranking I’ve seen him get.

On the other hand, Mayo didn’t have any Orioles besides Matusz in the top 60.

he tends to go really high with specific guys that most everybody else doesn’t give much thought to. I don’t think he cracked the top 100, but KLaw always liked Reimold a lot more than everyone else did.

But, meh, it’s just one guys opinion and doesn’t change nothing.

So it balances out if somebody loves a particular player. Although Britton above Arrieta surprised me, but not too much.

More Boras/Damon fun

This part cracked me up. Boras characterizes a team’s negotiations tactics as theater. Kettle meet pot.

But Boras’ point is that this negotiation was theater, not a real give-and-take, because the Yankees were waiting on Johnson to accept a $5.5 million 2010 offer with a mutual option for $5.5 million in 2011, and that Damon could only get even the two years at $14 million if Johnson now rejected the Yankees’ offer. In other words, the Yankees already knew at this moment they were not signing Damon and were negligent because they had not spoken directly to him to determine exactly what Damon wanted..

There's also the CAIRO projections out there

which is a little more troublesome (and I think unfair) for the Orioles – I’m guessing they’re at 79-80 wins myself.

79-80

seems like a reasonable guess to me.

by O'sFan21 on Jan 29, 2010 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly, I WANT 75 wins

and will be happy or distressed by how many games over/under we are from that. The problem with expecting 80 wins is that if we get lucky, we’ll have 90 wins and maybe a wild card title. I don’t believe the Orioles are AL East Wild Card good. I think we’ll be lucky just to get to 80, and it’ll be a miracle to get to 90.

I’ve had enough losing years. That also means the youngsters are playing well, I think, which bodes well for the future.

If we get mid to high 70's

I might go crazy. If we are anywhere near 81 then I’m gonna be totally irrational and want that more than anything. I just want to end the streak. 81 will do, and 82 would be amazing. A winning season. Wow.

I’m not greedy tho. 81 isn’t a losing season, so i’d definitely take it.
