ONEderful Wishes
Brian Roberts has established a new facet to his work with the University of Maryland Children's Hospital, ONEderful Wishes. It is a gift registry program through Toys R Us where supporters can purchase toys for children undergoing treatment. Also, did you know Brian has a website? You can visit the toy registry from there and see an adorable photo of Brian, his wife, and their dog. -Stacey
The Oriole Windfall for 2011 – Dempsey's Army
Heath has a great write-up on the Orioles' salaries for the next two years, and points out that the team will have tremendous payroll flexibility a year from now. "I think 2011 is the year that MacPhail is targeting. He'll have a better idea where his holes are and have plenty of cash to address them. This offseason, his biggest task is not to screw it up with a long contract to a middling free agent. (See Huff, Aubrey or Walker, Jamie)" -zk
Minor promotion - MASNsports.com
After two years as field coach at Single-A Delmarva, Ryan Minor is getting the opportunity to manage. And he'll feel right at home despite limited experience in the role, since he lives in Salisbury and has a short commute to the ballpark. -zk

Delmarva Shorebirds announce staff
The Shorebirds officially announce Ryan Minor as manager and the guy's already got some coaching success. The 'Birds were third in the Sally in league average despite hitting in what's considered a slightly pitching-friendly park. Mike Devereux will coach hitters and Troy Mattes, an original Shorebird when it was an Expos farm team in 1996, will be pitching coach. Dude had five complete games and three shutouts that year pitching with Javier Vasquez. -duck

I like that desktop schedule
I love that I love all of the guys on it.
That reminds me that my grandfather got the 2010 Orioles wall calendar for Christmas and I was shocked to find that I didn’t hate any of the players featured. I mean, I’m not wild about Wiggy, but whatever.
It's the moderate el nino
When the el nino is weak, we get a mild winter. When the el nino is strong, we get a mild winter. When the el nino is moderate, we get dumped on.
No, I don’t know what any of that means. But I read an article.
5 degrees this morning
in Oklahoma. That’s temp…not windchill. It’s a cold MFer here.

We here in Rochester, NY weep for you
I don’t even remember what the sun or the grass look like.

I picked my friend up from the airport Tuesday
He was flying in from Wisconsin where it was -20 when he woke up that morning. I don’t even understand how that’s possible, or why anyone would want to live there.
I'm not convinced anyone wants to live here, either
it’s just convenient not to move.

My brother's fiancee will be working in Minneapolis next year
he lives in berkeley now. When he was home recently and it was 30 degrees and windy I kept reminding him that it was mid April weather.
I lived in Rochester for 12 years
Hated shovelling the lake effect weather. Only redeeming aspect of living there from 1978 to 1989 was that I got to watch the Orioles AAA team play once in awhile. Still remember watching Cal Ripken play for the Red Wings.
I've seen some great baseball up here
and it’s truly beautiful in the fall and late spring. I have ton of friends up here and there some great people in general (and fantastic bars). But I’m trying as hard as I can to get the fuck out of dodge. Seriously.

My job took me away in '89
I went to Albany, then Ithaca area (no minor league ball) before relocating to New Jersey a couple years ago. Today we have snow, but in general the weather here in NW Jersey is pleasant. I get to see some baseball, too. Last year I saw the Orioles play in the new Yankee stadium. I hope to get to OPACY at least once this year. I have a high school reunion in Towson area in June. Don’t ask which anniversary. Suffice it to say I saw all of Brooks Robinson’s career in Baltimore.
Low 70s in LA suckas!
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?

NO
People ask me this question occasionally, and I don’t understand it. I saw snow when I visited my family over Christmas. It sucks in general. I hate shoveling it. I hate driving in it. I hate the semi-frost bite my hands experienced. I like to ski in it. That’s about it. But there are designated areas for that.
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?
Man in Black: Yes.
Vizzini: Morons.
Snow is awesome
Well, if you like the out doors. Go cross country skiing (no downhill for me), Hike/snowshoe a mountain in the winter and walk through trees bent to create snow tunnels. Then crampon up to a summit. Switch your crampons for skis or just crouch on your snowshoes and swoosh back down. It’s about as good as it gets.

I like to play in snow. But I much rather drive to a ski resort to play in it rather than having it around where I live.
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?

I like the unexpected snow day.
best thing in the world when everyone is forced to stop for a bit and have a little unplanned rest. Never happens on the west coast.

I shall be rooting for the Eagles and Cardinals this weekend
I don’t think the Ravens will win, but just in case they do I want to have everything in line for a possible Bird Bowl. My friends and I had it all planned out for last year, but the Ravens ruined it by losing. Of course, by all planned out, we meant that we said to each other, “We should cook a giant turkey for the Bird Bowl!”
Why for the Cardinals?
Don’t you want to root for the real A-Rod?
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.
-Jack Handey
Here's what i'm hoping for
Eagles win (I just want the Cowboys playoff losing streak to keep going and going and going…)
Pack win (it’s my bro-in-law’s favorite team, plus I’d love to see a Pack-Vikings rematch)
Ravens win (duh, I love Ray Rice, I like the Ravens quite a bit, and I despise the Pats)
Jets? Bengals? (I’ve got nothing against the Jets, and if they win i’ll be happy for them, but it sure is fun to watch them let down their fans year after year. Kinda like the Mets.)
Then I want the Saints, Pack, Colts, and Ravens (if that is possible). Those are my 4 “other” favorite teams, so whatever happens after that, i’m happy.
Crap
I forgot the Jets became the 5th seed. Well, whoever wins Ravens-Colts, thats who I want in the Bowl.
Love the Dempsey’s Army post – it really shows how great McPhail has done in turning this franchise around in short order. The days of fielding teams with Over-the-hill, Overrated, and Overpaid players is gone. In comes the youth movement acquired by a few shrewd trades and voila, we have beaucoup money to burn to fill the few remaining holes (Hello, adrian on line 1). How can you not be excited about the future. The salary breakdown also makes it easier for me to swallow the fact I’ll be watching wiggy and/or atkins as every day players (but just for next year). Knowing the O’s topped out around $100 m. a few years ago and now they’ll be around $50 mil gets me giddy about the possibilities.
B-Rob: excellent human being. Shorebirds: Whoa, Devo AND Minor? To balance those upgrades, their radio games will be called by...
Ferd Misfart, who is not really Bowie-capable yet, you’ll agree.
In other news, the Titov Titanic Bowl Cruise ended up righting itself, sort of. I mean, 18-16 isn’t going to win you enough to put your kid through Strayer College (if that), but still, after the 0-7 start and a mid-schedule 0-5 drought, I was pretty sure this year was going to end up with the first truly Tidy Bowl total. But hey, hope springs infernal!
The Pac 10 had a conspicuously awful post season, let’s face it: even without the two bad-break shouldas (Stanford w/o starting QB, Cal w/o best RB), it comes up an undistinguished 4-3 overall, ho-hum; the actual 2-5 looks particularly grim after last year’s 5-0, of course, which went some ways toward illustrating how underrated the conf has long been (look at 5-year and 10-year out-of-conf and vs.-BCS totals).
Strangest Season honors are split by SC (the Whaaa…? team) and Bizarro Cal, which played great games and phone-ins in a non-pattern that defied the analysis of scientists at the Lawrence Livermore Nat’l Laboratory. And me.
Biggest Bowl Barf-out: frickin’ Orygun managed to make Oafus State look more than competent. Unbelievable. SC methodically pummeled those plodders in Columbus, for heaven’s sake. Yeah, that SC.
In other OTHER news, it’s good to get back to Moscow. No annoying relatives, the snow covers the city’s (myriad) blemishes— and there’s what, 40 days til the cry “Pitchers and catchers!” rings out…
So that’s it for Jan. 8: Happy Eastern Orthodox Kwan’zaa, y’all!

OMG
At the bottom of the Huff/Mora article:
The Orioles have a standing minor league offer with a major league spring training invitation to pitcher Rich Hill, who went 3-3 with a 7.80 ERA in 14 outings with the team last year. Hill has received similar offers from other clubs and has yet to make a decision.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Chris Waters is gone, and we could use a mediocre lefty if someone ever gets hurt.
"I'd like to do something. We all would here," he added. "As I've said before, you just don't want to do anything stupid that you're thinking in May, 'What in the God's green earth was I thinking about?'" - Andy MacPhail 12/8/09
If Hills signs a minor league deal, he’ll probably never make it up to the big club. He’ll have to shut down AAA hitters, which won’t happen unless he regains his control, and several injuries need to happen. And if several injuries happen, a crap pitcher is coming anyways.

I know they're the worst
I’ve been watching O’s highlights pretty much ever since I posted that and I’m about to kill that chick who says I’m a PC and I’m outta here.
That Felix Pie makes some sweet plays in the OF. I love hearing the opposing team’s announcers marvel.
OMG you guys
After watching the Felix Pie highlights I am convinced he’s going to be a superstar. And that he should be playing center field.
i love the players imitating his running.
