School of Roch: A scout's take - Part III
"Looking at your club, I think the kid in right field (Nick Markakis) is a .300 hitter, 20 home runs, 90 RBIs, plus-defender, three-hole hitter. The center fielder (Adam Jones), I think he's going to be a star. The guy that I've kind of gone backward on is (Felix) Pie. I thought he was stepping up, but right now he's a guy that I'm not real sure about, whether he's going to be more than an extra outfielder, whether he can be an everyday guy or not. It comes down to makeup."
Steve Melewski: For O's Erbe, the comeback begins

Kinda cool that he's hanging around town.
Now if we can get him in an Os jersey next year and Ray Ray at OPCY in a Koji jersey, that would be sweet…

It's really unbelievable.
Of all the things in the world Koji could have been doing, he was in M&T Bank Stadium in a Ray Lewis jersey. Who would have ever guessed it?
Do you think if Angelos invited him to a suite, he’d be sure to sign with the O’s? (Too soon?)

Been watching the NL playoff games...
…because they’re on the TV at work. It’s utter agony to watch these games. Other than the Phillies, the NL makes the Orioles lineup look like Murderer’s Row. The Giants have to be the worst hitting team to ever make it as far as they have. A fly ball that moves up a runner one base is considered a major offensive weapon!

I was working all night in my office
When a man I had recently killed called me up from a phone near my building.
So I looked out the window at him.
He had the same obsequious manner that was the reason I had him killed.
So to calm my nerves I sang this song to him, over the phone:
"See, uh, people ski topless here while smoking dope, so irony's not really a, a high priority. We haven't had any irony here since about, uh, '83, when I was the only practitioner of it. And I stopped because I was tired of being stared at."
Wrong band, dude
We’re going with Ben Folds Five, remember?

"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
i'm sorry to say the a capella CD really disappointed me
I saw him on that tour, and the groups he had performing with him (in LA, anyway) were weak. And the groups on the CD, supposedly the “best of”, are also pretty weak. I’ve just heard much better college a capella sung—more focus on musicianship (to paraphrase a former discussion here) and arrangements, less focus on gimmicks.
Then again, I’m something of an a capella snob.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
I can see that
As a Ben Folds fan first and a an a capella fan, well almost never, I really enjoyed it. I thought it was fun to hear reinterpreted Ben Folds songs reinterpreted, I have absolutely no idea if the actual arrangements were any good.
I thought it was fun to hear reinterpreted Ben Folds songs reinterpreted
I completely agree with this. Particularly because a lot of his music lends itself to a capella arrangements. He’s already always go 3 or 4 complex harmonies/alternate lines going on, so there’s plenty of stuff to spread around the group.

OK, you just made my day.
I love Video Killed…. and had no idea BFF had done a cover of it. I went to iTunes and discovered it’s on a REMASTERED version of Whatever and Ever Amen. I have the original album, which only has 12 cuts on it, and now I’ve discovered 7 tracks I’ve never heard before! Whooppee!
Many of your faves are my faves as well. I have to say Battle of Who Could Care Less is up there, almost the protypical BFF song for me. And I also like Not The Same, because when he does it in concert, he always splits the audience up and has them do the harmonic ahhhhs in the chorus (and because, like so many of his songs, it’s a great suburban story). Good stuff. The Luckiest never fails to penetrate me, and although it’s sentimental, Your Most Valuable Possession (built around his dad’s answering machine message) is brilliant.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
All good stuff
I also forgot to add some stuff off supersunnyspeedgraphic (all u can eat, always someone cooler…). The Luckiest always kills me at:
Next door there’s an old man who lived to his 90’s
and one day, passed away, in his sleep
and his wife, she stayed for a couple of days
and passed away.
I can not get through that part without getting chills for some reason.

"Philosophy" was the first song I heard by them
Still one of my favorites. Saw them play at the 9:30 club on my 18th birthday way back in ’97. We were right up front and he wished me a happy birthday.
I keep seeing BFF and think you're talking about BSF.

Um, maybe this was already known and I just missed it
but, in that Roch article about the coaching staff:
Hitting coach Terry Crowley will return, according to sources, though the club hasn’t confirmed it yet.
That just ruined my morning.
Well, at least my winter
"Walk not down that road, I cannot tell you where it goes. Ask me no more questions - some things you're not meant to know." - The Sword
I don't know why you guys

For me it's more about it just being more of the same
I know Crowley hasn’t had the best to work with in the past, but he’s been here forever. He may not be the problem, but he’s certainly not the solution. And if Buck Showalter can come in here and hire all of his own coaches but is being told to bring back Crowley, it’s an indictment on the Orioles that’s much bigger than simply the hitting coach.
You never know when someone is gonna sneak up on ya at the dolphin show! -wrb1990
what makes you think
that MacPhail (or Angelos?) is the one rehiring the Crow instead of Buck? I didn’t even ponder that as a possibility at all until you just mentioned it.
"See, uh, people ski topless here while smoking dope, so irony's not really a, a high priority. We haven't had any irony here since about, uh, '83, when I was the only practitioner of it. And I stopped because I was tired of being stared at."
It just seems a little unusual that he would retain many people from the current staff
I’d like to hear him at least explain the decision to bring Crow back, if it does end up happening.
I refuse to believe Crow could be retained for any reason other than blackmail.
And Angelos is the only constant of Crow’s tenure. Every manager and GM has gotten fired or left on their own.

Obviously I have no way to know either way
But I think the fact that Crowley has stuck through these years while managers get the boot and pitching coaches are fired and it’s a revolving door of staff is pretty suspect.
If the Crow stays I have no doubt that Buck will toe the company line and say he wanted him, so we’ll never know. But something about it smells.
You never know when someone is gonna sneak up on ya at the dolphin show! -wrb1990
The question is:
Why in the hell would PGA want to keep him around so damn bad?
And does this somehow involve the cock-shots Brett Favre sent Jenn Sterger? If so, this is a crime that only the cigar-guy that photobombed Tiger Woods can solve.

Crowley has got to be a mole
Why a mole is needed I’ll never know. The team has sucked for 13 years, not sure how that wasn’t clear. I loathe the aggressive style, but whatever, at least Markakis is smart enough to not care, so maybe a hitting coach doesn’t matter and it’s a moot point.

Pie
Sorry to interrupt the chatter and return to baseball. Do the rest of you share the unnamed scout who opined that Pie may not have what it takes in terms of makeup. I thought that Felix made great strides this year.
He looked kinda like garbage towards the end of the year

Yeah, he needs to remember how to take a walk.
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
now back to regular programming
Pie has put the following numbers in the past two years: .270 .315 .424 .739, 96 OPS+. That’s who Pie is. He still might have some upside bat wise but I’m doubtful. And his glove isn’t good enough to make up his bat. So we need to Reimold to come back strong or another LF.
I've been playing baseball since I was six years old, so that's 40 years I've been on a baseball field and around a baseball field, and so our opinions are formulated through facts, not fiction, not their little chat room jargon.
maybe if he works with Brady Anderson, when Brady gets hired as batting coach.
Oh, er, never mind.

Maybe Brady will be the secret hitting coach
But nobody will tell Crowley so as not to offend him and cause him to reveal whatever blackmail he has that’s allowed him to keep the hitting coach position for this long. At least, that’s the theory Stacey and I came up with last week.

I love our theory of secret hitting coach
Don’t forget the part where the secret hitting coach makes everyone so good that the Yankees get tricked into hiring the Crow away from the Orioles.

Is this a sub-plot in the Reimold movie?

I don't agree
but i can’t really articulate why in a way that really disputes the statement. Its so vague that its not really possible to argue against.
bad fielder
but he’s a natural CF so it’s not too big of a deal

Stacey's new avatar cracks me up.

I didn't
But it’s still funny. Is the McAfee part of your sig in reference to what happened at Stampede Blue?

they're down on Pie
who cares? he’s a pretty decent player. so the defense sucks, he can work on it considering he’s a natural centerfielder. even if he doesn’t, I like the idea of Werth coming in and playing that spot just fine.
