Fox v. Cablevision

Fox’s strategy was to target sports fans in its advertising, but I have to laugh when they say “You could miss the NFL on Fox and the World Series!”. Well Fox, you picked a bad week to be pushing that line. The Giants are on MNF, the Jets are on a bye, and the Yankees didn’t make it to the WS. Keep showing that film from last year’s series in your commercials though guys.

Anybody else sick of hearing about Howard's lack of an RBI in the postseason?

Buster Olney just parroted the line in his column today. Yeah, he kinda sucked in the three-game NLDS, and the lack of homers from him is odd. But he hit .318/.400/.500 in the NLCS — not his fault nobody was on base for him.

"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver

I'm sick of hearing about RBI period

Howard had a very strange NLCS. He struck out in half of his PA and didn’t homer but was still the Phillies’ second best hitter. Hey, how about putting some blame on Raul Ibanez and Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley? None of those guys delivered anything at all for Philly.

So the Orioles have one non-tender candidate

it’s Matt Albers, second time arbitration-eligible player. The non-tender deadline is December 2nd. To refresh your memory, Albers had a 4.24 FIP and a 4.54 ERA in 75.2 innings at age 27. He put up his best ever GB rate (56.5%) and has a pretty strong platoon split – 3.88 FIP, 3.23 ERA against righties. That’s all what he did in 2010.

The Orioles also, by my count, have just two bullpen free agents: Hendo and Koji, in case you’re thinking about how best to build the bullpen.

So: do you non-tender Matt Albers?

Well in that case, I think you do non-tender Albers

though that doesnt mean i necessarily don’t want him back. The splits in particular suggest he could be a productive piece of a bullpen, but I dont think theres is anything particularly nonfungible about him. Non-tender him, but keep him on the short list of players to fill the slot and try to get a better deal on a similar player. I doubt theres much a risk of him getting a substantially better deal elsewhere.

they go hand-in-hand

I personally think that Albers is probably worth a bullpen spot, but if he was going to be making an amount of money that was so high you could pick up a similar player on the cheap, then non-tender him. But also, if you think he’s probably worth the roster spot but he ends up sucking, it doesn’t hurt to cut him loose if he’s making a small amount of money.

but are you content to go into 2010 with the same bullpen

It's so hard to talk about bullpens

Because they are so volatile. But I wouldn’t want to go in with the same bullpen. I’d want to cut Hendo loose, stash Simon in the minors or send him back to the Mexican league. I think a full season of healthy JJ will help the pen, same for Gonzo.

well that's true

I honestly don’t know what to do with Albers. On the one hand he doesn’t totally suck and he is cheap and those two things together make him a plus in my eyes. On the other hand, he isn’t that good, really, and if we could find more talent for relatively cheap (ala Will Ohman more than Kerry Wood or the other closer candidates) I feel like you have to make that move, and there’s always quality relievers to be found.

I dunno.

I'm trying to think

7 spots in the bullpen (don’t anybody tell me otherwise), and we’ve got:

Hernandez, Berken, Johnson, Gonzalez penciled in, and VandenHurk, Patton, and plenty of minor leaguers that could possibly jump in, and Koji maybe returning (though that’s another show). And then there is Albers.

So if Koji is back, then you’re looking at upgrading from either Albers or Patton/Hurk/etc., and if Koji is not back, then they might want to bring in someone anyway, but Albers would still be on the weak end of the bullpen, no?

When you put it that way, Albers kind of handcuffs the Orioles

If you keep him on and he sucks, how long do you give him before you release him? If you think that Patton/VandenHurk/whoever is going to be comparable with him except with options, then maybe it’s easier to get rid of him.

On the other hand, if you get rid of him and Patton/VandenHurk both suck, then you know the O’s are gonna call up Alberto Castillo or Frank Mata or some shit.

Platoon splits

vs. left .297/.362/.458
vs. right .250/.342/.320

Too many walks. I don’t care what he costs. Let’s try to find someone who sucks less than Albers to be in the bullpen. If it becomes a binary choice between signing some guy who will cost a draft pick and Albers, then fine… Albers.

But if someone’s thinking to themselves, “Well, he wasn’t THAT bad…” realize that you’re only saying that because we saw a parade of guys who suck even more. On a team that wasn’t terrible like the Orioles from April-July, Albers would have been gone from the ML roster before June. The fact that he wasn’t gone from the Orioles some time in June speaks to our lack of confdience in minor league relievers (justifiably so given the shit we saw from some of the guys who got called up) more than anything positive for Albers.

Relief Pitchers

Whatever we do, please don’t get a pitcher who costs us a second round draft choice. We now get one more year of Mike Gonzales for last year’s second rounder. This is not a good way to build talent in the minor leagues.

You don't think they could get 4 of 7?

Against the Giants? That team has to be one of the weakest teams to sneak through to the World Series in a while. The Rangers (ignoring the whole AL/AL WS match-up) would be much more difficult, but hey, we own Cliff Lee.

I think that O’s lineup, as pathetic as it is, is probably as good or better than the Giants lineup. But you can’t argue with their pitching.

I'd say we probably win a 7 game series about 30% of the time

The Giants would certainly be the favorite, but I can definitely imagine us getting enough breaks to take the series.

by kba26 on Oct 25, 2010 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we win at least 30% with HFA,

but traditionally we play like crappola on the left coast. I know we won one during the season out there, but with their pitching set up correctly, I just don’t see how this Orioles team would be able to win more than 1 in SF. And if they were able to win 1, they would have to beat Lincecum in either game 4 or 5. I suppose it’s doable, but real tough.

True...

but I’m not selling the Orioles short. Bergy is always good for a ridiculous performance in a big spot, Guts was dealing down the stretch, and if “the plan” allowed for it, I’d rather see a Mentor-less WS and watch Matusz/Arrietta go and just ride a four man rotation.

can't argue with our pitching at the end of the season

we played really well against some really good teams (took 2 series from the Yankees?) because the pitching finally looked good.
I know, small sample size, stone me to death or whatever it is that you do when heaven forbid we don’t have a big enough sample, but I think we could take the Giants.
note: I’m not saying the O’s pitching is anywhere NEAR as good as the Giants’ pitching, but guys have bad days, anything could happen.

I'm not sure any game would see more than 5 runs scored by both teams combined.

Whether or not the Orioles would win four of them, I couldn’t say. I don’t like our chances against Cain and Lincecum, but then, the Giants have no defense and probably wouldn’t fare well against Guts, or Matusz.

isn’t even good enough to make the playoffs in the NBA. Though .439 got Boston the 8 seed in ’04. Could you imagine a 92 loss baseball team in the playoffs?

I can check two places that are more or less on my way home from work (I've been driving recently)

They may be out of your way, but:

The Old Vine
Quarry Wine and Spirits

Both have a decent if not great 22oz selection. Other blind suggestions:

If you’re going up 83, Shawan Liquors has an excellent 22oz selection and has a lot of Heavy Seas stuff.

by PhilR8 on Oct 25, 2010 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

update

Neither have it. Guy at Quarry said that he would love to have a lot of the Heavy Seas seasonals, but the Heavy Seas rep for the area (Pikesville etc) quit a few months ago and wasn’t replaced. Quarry guy now feels out of the loop and is annoyed at Clipper City. So dunno if there are problems at CC or what. Kind of made me sad.

to me, its an even better story

its basically a sports cliche:

guys who sucks is traded for guy who also sucks but is considered a mentor, both guys continue to suck. Then guy who sucks is traded for another guy who sucks, and both teams (excluding the one with the mentor) go on to win their leagues despite having all that suck being passed around.
