Thursday Bird Droppings
Question of the Day: So far the bulk majority of our pre-offseason conjecture has been saved for the infield and the pitching staff, but it is an unfortunate fact that the Orioles were also 28th in run production out of left field. The "main" left fielder in 2009 was Felix Pie who at age 25 hit .268/.300/.414. Are you still a Pie believer, or should the Orioles be looking somewhere else (Reimold, free agency) for their starting left fielder? -Andrew

It's win-win
If he accepts, we keep one of the best late-inning guys in the AL.
If he refuses and signs elsewhere, we get a pick, depleting that teams’d draft, yes?
Works for me.

Agree that we should offer Koji arbitration.
Sounds very much like a win-win. A sandwich pick would be a good thing to have. Keeping Koji would also be a good result. I love to watch him pitch.
I think we give Felix one more shot.
He seemed to regress a bit this year… mostly because he forgot how to take a walk. But he still hasn’t gotten to play for a full season in his career, thanks to bench-warming and injuries. If he plays LF for 140+ games this year and doesn’t put together a solid season (something like .280/.330/.450 with plus defense), then sadly, the experiment may need to end — or he’s at least relegated to fourth OF. But unless we somehow sign Werth or Crawford, I think we should run Felix out there again in 2011.
Fact of the day: Matt Wieters (887) has had more major-league PAs than Felix Pie (878).

I really don’t know how much it matters. Pie certainly thinks Crowley helped him a lot, and if there are common drills that Felix struggled to do before the Crow worked with him, then it would seem that the hitting coach actually helped. But then, what hitting coach wouldn’t work hard with a player on common drills once said player became willing to work harder?

they obviously CAN matter with certain situations
It obviously depends on the coach’s analytical skills, the player’s receptiveness, and what the player is doing wrong.
But the Derek Jeter story this past September is a good example. (Warning, ugly picture of Derek Jeter).
He was mired in a slump, having hit .168 over a period of four weeks. Yankees coach Kevin Long approached him about working on it and Jeter took a day off with the coach to study video, change something he was doing with his foot, and take 300 swings in the batting cage with his new stance.
He hit .342 for the rest of the season.

well, sure, but that could have just been him coming out of a slump
it’s tough to separate what the coach did and the rest of the stuff.
No offense, but....ENOUGH WITH THE FIELDER/GONZALEZ TRADE PROPOSALS.
it's clear in this case that the day of work was what made the difference
no one here can convince me that a player who has
- batted .168 for a month, then
- takes a day off, changes his stance, and puts in a shitload of reps in the new stance, and THEN
- bats .342 for a month
is just regressing to the mean. To argue that is to be in denial.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
The day of work obviously made a difference, yes
but to assume that he would have continued to hit .168 without that day of work is also to be in denial. So there must be some balance between the two, and there’s nobody who can figure out what that is. That’s my only point.
No offense, but....ENOUGH WITH THE FIELDER/GONZALEZ TRADE PROPOSALS.
The argument then becomes
How much of this can be attributed to the hitting coach, and how much to Jeter? And what difference would it make if this particular hitting coach was interchanged with any of the 30 others in MLB, or a host of other hitting instructors at all levels of pro ball.
I would argue: I’m sure it matters at least a little, but I would have no more basis for my opinion than if someone else argued that it doesn’t matter.
"Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly; Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?' Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land; Man got to tell himself he understand.."
read the article
long and jeter went over video. long noticed jeter was holding up with his stride foot. he encouraged Jeter to change one thing about it. jeter made that one change and put in the reps. he immediately started hitting better. both jeter and long attribute the change to improving his contact on the ball.
of course, they’re both responsible. I’m just tired of people on this site saying coaches and/or managers have nothing to do with how well players play.

I honestly don't know what to think about left field
Felix has gone through periods where he looks fantastic and periods where he looks totally lost. It’s also hard to evaluate his 2010 because of his injury. And we know he’s athletic but sometimes he had troubles in the field as well – I really think he’s more suited to CF not that it matters at this point.
Someone should have told Nolan and Felix that last off-season when we talked about what a tough decision it was to decide to who to play in LF, this wasn’t really what we had in mind.
The only logical conclusion is to sign Carl Crawford.

Crawford is basically the highest point
any of us could possibly wish Felix would ever reach, right? Crawford turned 29 in August. When he was Felix’s age, he already had a good 3 to 4 wins on him per season. So why NOT go hard after Crawford? Seriously, obviously money is an issue but if you need to upgrade the offense in a long term meaningful way, Carl Crawford is the best fit for this team in a year where the other positions offer a lot of short term dreck to wade through.
No offense, but....ENOUGH WITH THE FIELDER/GONZALEZ TRADE PROPOSALS.
I don't think the O's have a shot at signing Crawford
And I don’t think they’d do what it takes to get him even if they did. I just don’t have faith in that kind of thing with Andy MacPhail.
However, if you put Cliff Lee and Carl Crawford in front of me and told me I could have one of them, I’d take Crawford.
You never know when someone is gonna sneak up on ya at the dolphin show! -wrb1990
I think he'd come here if the money was right
I have no idea how much money it would take to convince him to play in Bmore, but there has to be a number. Everyone has a number.
But your right, Andy MacPhail simply hasn’t shown himself to be that kind of aggressive bidder (even though he put in an actual bid for Mark Teixeira who might be worth less than Crawford at the same age)….le sigh.

I think the reality is that if the difference is negligible, any good player will choose the better team. And unfortunately, with each player they get to a price point where it no longer makes sense to sign them.
Carl Crawford’s career OPS+ is 107 (which I know is only part of the story). And he’s put a lot of time on the turf in Tampa. From my view, buyer beware.

that offering that kind of money/year combo was a franchise-killer? What’s the expected value of a contract for Crawford? LF was hardly the problem last year, it still leaves us with three gaping holes in the line-up.

Two things
1) the more I think about it, the less convinced I am that a big contract is going to cripple the franchise. We’re not talking about signing Ryan Howard through 2017 here to 20 million a year here. Obviously if it gets too large, then you have to bow out, but the Orioles should have the financial power and flexibility to sign Carl Crawford. Especially considering what they were willing to pay Mark Teixeira.
2) As I said, left field is certainly a problem. 28th in run production out of left field, and our de facto starter got on base just 30% of the time and hit for less power than the year before. Oh, and he has a difficult time staying healthy. Yes, I’m starting to lose faith/patience with Felix Pie.
No offense, but....ENOUGH WITH THE FIELDER/GONZALEZ TRADE PROPOSALS.
I'm still convinced...
that AMac knew Tex was going to NY, so that "offer’ was a move designed to keep the pitchforks and torches away.

Tex was all but penciled into the Boston lineup until the eleventh hour. NY hadn’t even made an offer, and had signed Swisher.

He made an offer that he thought made financial sense for the O’s and hoped that Teixiera would take a hometown discount. I don’t think it was a phantom offer in order to appease the public. If Teixeira would have accepted the O’s offer, the O’s wouldn’t have than said, ha just kidding.

Crawford > Pie, Reimold
At some point, we have to upgrade our batting lineup. Crawford does that, at age 29. I’d dump money & year into him.

Belle had $37M left on his contract. 70% of that was covered by insurance. So the O’s paid $11M to have Belle sit on the 60 day DL and take up a spot on the 40 man roster for 3 years. Overall, the O’s paid $39.1 for one excellent season and 1 good one. The Belle signing sucked balls.

As of 13 October,
MLBTR was saying:
The contract will be a major commitment – at least five years and more than $15MM per season. Crawford is the best available position player, and it wouldn’t be a shock if bidding reached seven years and nearly $20MM per season.I’ll admit, the high end of that does make me wary. But we should definitely make a serious offer.

I'd start at 6-90
but this isn’t going to happen. They gave Roberts 4-40, and they are comparable players (though I think Crawford’s defense is better in left than Roberts’ is at second) and there’s little chance I can see them bidding over what they gave Roberts for that type of player.

I am still a believer in the Left field position
Does that mean Pie? Reimold? Not sure but its got to be one of them. The thing I feel worst about is that Pie would do well when he HAD to take over left field, ie, an injury or under production. Reimold does the same.
The biggest problem is that once they DO get the job and the other is healthy enough to compete, neither one proves to me that they can do it. An old saying says competition brings out our best which is NOT TRUE in this case. Reimold got the opening day bid because Pie had been dealing with injuries toward the end of the year. It was REIMOLD’S TO LOSE and what did he do? Blew it. Pie was practically given the job with the AAA demotion. He started out okay but once it was PIE’S to lose, HE didnt do well.
Its frustrating. Thats why my Orioles song is Still the One by Orleans.

Season 4 was hard, but watching Wallace speak those lines in the first season had me shook for a while. Something about the way the scene was shot – the seeming normalcy of them bounding up the stairs, Wallace worrying about the kids he was looking after, the lighting. Ugh…

Ok. The scene:
The mother, Kirsten, has become an alcoholic. The rest of the family decides to hold an intervention. Blah blah blah. Her son, Seth, is initially absent from the room during said intervention. Initially she is reluctant to admit that she has a problem until Seth enters the room. No words are spoken, but based on the expression on his face it becomes obvious to Kirsten that she is hurting/ruining her family.
Now under normal circumstances this would not make someone cry. Unfortunately, drugs and alcohol destroyed my family when I was 13 years old. No one held an intervention to save my family and it was a little more than I could handle, especially considering the whole mother-son connection.

For me, a lot of times the drama felt really forced and was completely groan worthy. I always dreaded the inevitable ‘scrubs moment’ about 80% of the way through the episode when the zach braff voiceover tried to give meaning to the whole thing.
I would have to assume you are in the minority
considering the show lasted 9 seasons. Most shows can’t make it past the first month, so Scrubs must have been doing something right.

Are they making their exits?
I didnt read up much on it… I hope its not the end of the road for them and we get to peek in on them throughout the season. We lost alot of good men out there…. Smash, Jason Street, Lyla, the tall blonde (name escapes me). This show has the ability to recycle charactars like no one’s business. As long as they have the coach and his family, they can have a show. I have no idea why it is already set in stone that this has to be the last season. It seems to be growing in popularity. Peter Berg is freaking great.
by Wieters Wieners on Oct 28, 2010 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions
I didn't even know it premiered last night, this is very exciting news
and I was reading an interview the other day (which probably said it premiered last night and i missed it) where Connie Britton said its actually great to know last season that there would definitely be one more season, and that it would be the final one. They could tell the stories they wanted to and know exactly how much time they had to wrap them up. I think tv would be a lot better off if shows were giving a bigger commitment up front but also a clear expiration date sooner rather than later. I think it makes for much tighter, better written shows.
the interview if you’re curious:
http://www.avclub.com/articles/connie-britton,46837/
i think it's the last season
because they are inevitably going to start repeating themselves. only so many times you can have improbable wins from the sad-sack team of misfits because coach is a good teacher and a better man.
re: those two characters—I’m sure they’ll each have two or three appearances. but I think that’s about it.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
Yup... just like when we lost Matt (he was one of my favorites - albeit awkward).
I wish this show would go forever. Its one of my favorite hours of the entire week. And last season his team completely sucked and lost to everyone under the sun except the final game. There are more plotlines than you’d imagine. They’ve largely gotten away from football being the central theme of the show anyway (especially in comparison to Season 1 when that was the central premise). Now their storylines are so intertwined football has kind of become the afterthought. I just think its terrific television. I’m shocked it was never more popular than it was.

NBC really fucked them with season two
when they made the writers sex it up and started having improbable religious conversions, tornados, and murder. leave it to the suits to fuck up a good thing.
season 1 flew under the radar, and was some of the best TV ever. so I told all my firends , YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS SHOW!, and they were all, "OK, I’ll watch when it restarts for season 2.
And after three weeks, they were all bailing, and telling me I was a idiot. I’m sure this same experience was replicated with a lot of other people.
FNL getting away from NBC was the best thing that could have happened for it.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
I'm really hoping someone jumps in and saves Terriers in the same manner
right now that sounds like a dead show walking, which is tragic
Season 2 was awful
A total hiccup in the series’ history.
From what I heard the writers thought it was going to be a one-and done show so they had them winning the championship in season 1 (if you need a spoiler alert from 5 years ago I dont feel bad for ya). In any case, I think they sort of got caught with their hand down their pants when they learned they had at least two more season and decided to make it a soap opera of sorts since the team had already achieved the ultimate goal in its premiere season.
Either way this season should be really interesting. I hope Tim Riggins is still a big part of the final season because he is my favorite charactar. But if he’s in jail for 3 months… not sure just how much of a factor he’ll be. Unless they end with him getting out in an emotion tear-jerker.

I still really dislike that guy for that… he was such an arrogant jerk on Iron Chef. But I’ve also read that the show’s producers asked him to play up the “ugly American” image, so maybe he’s not so bad? I haven’t watched his stuff on Food Network and the like.

I never liked Bobby Flay (which i think we've talked about before)
but I feel bad for him with the stupid shit Food Network has him doing now. That challenge show they have him doing now seems really demeaning. Anthony Bourdain said something about this, like does anyone actually believe that some random person off the street can really make a better chili than Bobby Flay or any other actually trained chef? At some point Food Network shifted from teaching people how to cook to teaching people how to pretend they can cook and take pride in the fact that they arent actually talented.
I've seen his own show once or twice

I think both Pie and Reimold should get one more year.
Unless on that off chance the O’s sign Crawford or Werth. Then we should try and get some infield prospects for one of them.
"I know the save rule, believe me. But it doesn't carry much weight with me. I like the win rule a little bit better." - Buck Showalter
I think the counter to that argument would be: if Pie and Reimold flounder for another year, they won't be worth anything.
Now, I’m not saying that means we need to overpay for anyone other than Crawford right now. I just think it’s something we should be aware of as we move along.

well, I'm not sure either are worth a whole lot right now anyway
but if we wait a year and we need a left fielder, then the best one is off the market (and perhaps on the red sox or yankees).

Yup. And the 2012 free agent OF class ain't too enticing either.

DeJesus is a nice player
but he’s no Crawford. And my original main point is that we want Felix Pie to become Carl Crawford….so why not just get Carl Crawford?
No offense, but....ENOUGH WITH THE FIELDER/GONZALEZ TRADE PROPOSALS.
Right. I agree.
And it’s not like the O’s have a shit-ton of $ tied up already. Amazingly, they only have $28.7 million guaranteed so far, with the arbritration eligible players (Jones, Pie, Guthrie, Albers, & Scott) and assorted free agency filler yet to be determined.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/10/2011-payroll-commitments.html
They can afford (especially with all the MASN $ flowing in) to go out and get Crawford. The O’s can’t be forever timid in the face of the Yankers spending largess. Put out a strong offer and if the Yankers want to send their payroll upwards of $250 million so be it.

This all makes sense.
Though, what about Werth?

I like Werth as well. But not nearly as much as I like Crawford.
He could fill another glaring hole in the O’s lineup, right handed pop. A back-to-back combo of him and Luke would be pretty sweet. And I imagine that Crawford will set the market and Werth will sign shortly thereafter, so he could be less expensive; in theory anyway.

I had no idea it was so small.73.8 million on opening day to 28.7 million? Where the heck did all that money go?
Millwood, Koji, Izturis, & Wigginton made $23.1 million combined, and that still leaves 22 million dollars unaccounted for. Hendo was 1.4, and the arbitration guys (Jones, Scott, Guts) were only $7.515… where’s the rest of that money, and where’d it go?

But can you even imagine if the Orioles signed Lee and Crawford this offseason? I mean, can you even?

Right, but there is no reason that we can't spend more than
last year. I would make offers to all three. Scott at first and Jones/Crawford/Werth manning left, center, and DH is an outstanding lineup. Not too mention it makes Pie and Reimold expendable to try to lock up a 3rd baseman/SS (or even Jones for that matter). Oh, dreaming sure is nice.

Well the thing you have to consider
Is that we have a lot of players that are going to start getting substantial raises over the next 5 years. We may have a lot of flexibility for the upcoming season or two, but then its gonna start to get tight. Any major offseason acquisitions now have to take that into account.
A point to consider
But I’d say if the Orioles start winning then they’ll have even more money to spend.

I’m digging the show. Vacillating between like and love, depending on the episode. Pretty stoked that I have like 40 hours of entertainment left.
I try to warn people.
There are really some great moments in that show. The whole first season is pretty brilliant as they build on the pilot. There’s serious episodes, comedy episodes, pretty good special effects on occasion, and a lot of character development. Season 2 has some crap but all the Pegasus stuff is good, I feel. It’s just that once it falls off, it falls off in a hurry.
It could have been one of the all-time greats if they finished the way they started. I guess that’s probably true of a lot of shows though.

I can’t imagine she’s gone forever. She’s just too important of a character and her death seems so random. I’m guessing she’s one of the final five, which would be really lame.
Your mother.

The whole “who are the final 5” story line is quality. As is the build up to the finale. Finale itself doesn’t suck, just left me with the sense of “is that all?”.

Some shows you just gotta get used to the acting
it took me a few episodes to get into the Wire because I thought the acting was atrocious. I think I tried to watch the first season but couldn’t get past the first episode. I picked it up again a year later and still had misgivings during the first few episodes, but then something just clicked and the acting problems disappeared. And the rest… is history.
I'm still a Pie believer.
I think if he’s given the chance to play everyday, AND we hold onto Luke Scott to continue acting as a mentor/accountability coach, he’ll start putting up solid-to-great numbers offensively. Remember, he was swinging the bat well before his injury last April, and still looked pretty good after 3 months rehabbing. I think if he stays healthy and continues to work hard on his pitch recognition, he has what it takes to be the starting LF for the next decade. Please get Reimold out of here while we can still dupe some other GM into thinking he’s a salvageable reclamation project.

dont let one year of bad reimold sour you
Putting up an ops of .831 in 358 AB’s isn’t something to give up on after one bad year (and it wasn’t Reimolds first good year). I’m wasn’t as high on him as most to start the year, and i’m not nearly as low on him as most are now. I think he’ll be an average LF for cheap going forward. Thats useful to have.
Pie i’m less sure of, i’m not convinced hes better than a 4th OF’er.

I dunno...
Their bats being roughly equal, I think Pie HAS to get the nod when you take defense into account. Yeah, he sometimes makes late jumps on fly balls, or miscalculates the correct angle he should take to get to a ball, but his speed allows him to recover and still make plays. Plus those legs make him way more of a threat to turn singles into doubles and doubles into triples. Reimold runs like a statue—his mechanics are only slightly better than Weiters’. And sure, Reimold can get up to an impressive top-speed, but he doesn’t get there until he’s at first. Pie is at top-speed just a few steps out of the box.

No to Felix Pie
As anything more than a 4th outfielder. Reimold, I would give a full chance to. He was still injured last spring, plus he had his head up his ass. It’s a proven fact that only Barry Bonds could hit with his head up his ass.
Actually, I am unimpressed with Felix Pie. He doesn’t hit for power or a high on base percentage. He is fast but doesn’t steal bases. I would include him in a deal for a young power hitting first baseman. Felix doesn’t do anything that can’t be done by Patterson (if we re-signed him) or probably even Matt Angle. And they can steal a base if needed.
I vote for Reimold in left field until the all star break.
