Rumor: Orioles to hire Jim Presley as hitting coach
With Tuesday's news that longtime Orioles hitting coach Terry Crowley will move to a hitting evaluator position, a Major League source said on Friday that he expects Jim Presley to soon sign a two-year deal to become Buck Showalter's hitting coach in Baltimore.
Read Ghiroli's full account at the link for details on Presley's career. There is no timetable for an official announcement.

I sucked as a HS wrestler
and have coached two state champs.

There's an extension to that saying
My Dad was a standout basketball, baseball, soccer player in HS and went on to teach Phys. Ed. for 38 years. He always disagreed with the saying but said if it is true there’s another line to it: “Those who can’t teach become administrators.”

who cares what his career player stats were?
I’d like to know, but am too lazy to look up, how the offenses he’s coached have done.

I glimpsed at Arizona's numbers while he was there
They had a putrid team the first season, dominated the NL in the second season, then fell back to about league average in the third season.

The triple slash line numbers from 07-09 Florida are pretty impressive.
Consistently top tier. They hovered around league average for taking BBs, and did strike out a lot, but managed to maintain high OBP/SLG/OPS numbers through BA and mashing the ball.

me, if it's any indicator of his approach to hitting
I don’t know either way, but I hope not.

or perhaps I should say..
any indicator of the approach he instructs to his hitters.

eh
Plenty of fantastic coaches and managers couldn’t play for shit. There is a difference between knowing what to do and being able to do it.

See Weaver, Earl.
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
"The only thing Earl knows about major league pitching is he couldn't hit it."
Right, Jim Palmer?

Speaking of these guys,
if anyone hasn’t seen this video and has about 45 minutes to kill, I highly recommend it. It’s the interview they did on the day of that 1970 WS celebration back in June. Palmer, Boog, Frank, Blair, Brooks, Davey, and Earl are present.

his approach when he was a hitter could have very little to do with his approach to teaching

agreed
and I don’t know his teaching approach, so I’m not bashing him or the hire.

I'd like to look at this and hopefully will soon.
But I think you have to look at who his players were as well and their talent level, maybe how individual players improved or didn’t under him, etc. You can’t just look at the numbers.

Definitely
I remember when somebody did the analysis of Crowley’s impact on the various teams he took over (was that you??) it was pretty interesting.

No wasn't me
But I’ll hopefully do something similar on Presley. Might wait until an official announcement is made so that it’s not a waste of my time :)

No doubt he had some incredible talent to work with in Fla
Hanley, Uggla, Miguel Cabera early on, Josh Willingham, etc…
Of course, even Mike Jacobs managed to produce while there. So maybe he does have some sort of hitting-voodoo.

and of course
I totally miss the boat on the whole “hitting-voodoo” thing, not anything remotely to do with pitching…

According to his Wikipedia page
When he was a player his nickname was Hound Dog.

Nick M
I hope that he does not try to turn Nick into a home run hitter. Or, if he does, I hope that Nick has the good sense to remain patient at the plate. According to Moneyball, the Red Sox badgered Wade Boggs to swing for the fences, but he refused.
Presley's philosophies
Anyone have any luck finding an interview with him? I’ve been on google for 20 minutes with no luck!

I blame....
my Terry Crowley poll.

Then you should put up a poll asking who the O's should sign this offseason
with the choices being Cliff Lee or Carl Crawford.

34+/- years
I have know JP for many years. Played HS ball with him under Fred Waters. Not that it has anythig to do with his coaching philosophy but I think you’ll find him a solid hitting coach. He is a real baseball guy with a knack for communicating with younger players….
