Anybody else noticed Kam's AFL stats?

8 G, 12 IP, 9 H (1 HR), 2 BB, 18 SO. I can’t tell whether that’s encouraging, or mostly because he’s a 26-year-old in the AFL and/or it’s a tiny sample size.

It isn't discouraging, at least.

But I doubt it truly tells us anything about his future as a pitcher.

Maybe on display as a trade piece

Maybe somebody else would want him like say….. Arizona as part of a Reynolds deal? I wouldn’t mind Drew in a bigger deal, too.

I seriously doubt anybody looks at AFL stats as anything more than a curiosity

tell me Kam the Destroyer can do that in the big leagues and I’ll take notice. Destroying the AA talent at the end of a long season for 8 games? Not impressive enough for teams to take note.

I could dream it forever and still not do it, but when the time comes for it to be done, God, I want to be ready for it.

The point of the question

is not “do you want Stephen Drew”? Because the answer is obviously yes. I could just as easily ask what you would be willing to give up for Troy Tulowitz…Tulowizs…Tulowitzk…eh, let’s just stick with Stephen Drew. The point is how much do you want to have a long-term settlement of a superstar caliber player at a position of desperate need? What would you be willing to sacrifice to do that? And of course “nothing” is a good answer…if you have a good reason for it.

I could dream it forever and still not do it, but when the time comes for it to be done, God, I want to be ready for it.

by Andrew_G on Nov 18, 2010 9:19 AM EST reply actions

I think that it would absolutely be worth it...

to make a move for an AS-caliber SS. Tillman is really the guy I expect teams to have the most interest in (outside of Matuz) if only because he’s young, under team control for a while, and really has the ability to dominate against lesser competition.

Tillman alone does not a trade make, so for the other pieces I would throw in whichever of Pie/Reimold they like and call it a day. I am nowhere near as versed on our farm system as you are so I’m only working with 40-man talent on this one.

I'd rather go 1 year with Izzy / Andino

and wait for JJ Hardy after next year. This way there is no need to trade any of the young talent for a player who is remarkably similar to Hardy, who can be had as a FA.

by PBR me ASAP! on Nov 18, 2010 9:30 AM EST up reply actions

This is basically what I was going to say.

Drew’s a better hitter, but he also plays in the NL in a hitters’ park, and Hardy is less than a year older with a better defensive track record.

"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver

by Vuff on Nov 18, 2010 9:31 AM EST up reply actions

well, like I said, my point isn't specific to Drew

what would you give up for Hanley Ramirez to lock him up long-term?

I could dream it forever and still not do it, but when the time comes for it to be done, God, I want to be ready for it.

by Andrew_G on Nov 18, 2010 9:39 AM EST up reply actions

Well, let's say Tulo, because Hanley's defense would drive me crazy.

But I would guess the price would be too high… I don’t think we can afford to give up more than one of the young pitchers. We don’t really have anybody coming up for a while once Britton does, and I don’t want to let go of him or Matusz.

"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver

by Vuff on Nov 18, 2010 9:44 AM EST up reply actions

flip it around

if we had Tulo but not Matusz or Britton or Tillman (just spitballing…def. not saying that that is what we would be trading for a guy like Tulo)….would you be willing to give him up for unestablished pitching depth, despite the years he still has under contract?

Would you be willing to trade Nick Markakis for a really good young pitcher and another pitcher not as good with high ceilings?

I could dream it forever and still not do it, but when the time comes for it to be done, God, I want to be ready for it.

by Andrew_G on Nov 18, 2010 10:02 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think I'd give up Tulo for anything reasonable,

considering that he’s a bargain locked up through 2014. I’m not good at coming up with trade scenarios, but my gut says that I’d hang up unless Matusz were included, at least one of Tillman/Britton/Arrieta, and another piece if it’s only one more pitcher.

Nick, I would think about more… but I’d be very reluctant to give up one of our few high-OBP guys, and I have no idea how we’d replace him.

by Reddrummer9187 on Nov 18, 2010 9:54 AM EST up reply actions

But can we count on FA as an option?

If we trade, the O’s get the player for the length of the contract unless the O’s decdie to deal him. Maybe it’s only a year, but it’s a year we have him and can negotiate.

If we depend on FAs to solve everything, especially a speciifc one at a specific position (like Hardy), what’s Plan B if he doesn’t sign?

I’d rather trade and have a better chance to lock up a really good player once he’s in our uniform than take a chance we might be able to sign someone as a FA. What is he pulls a Konerko and takes a lesser offer somewhere else becaus he doesn’t want to come here? What then?

Hey look, mister - we serve hard drinks in here for men who want to get drunk fast, and we don't need any characters around to give the joint "atmosphere".

by duck on Nov 18, 2010 9:39 AM EST up reply actions

True,

but we’re only actually trading for the period during which he’s under contract. I don’t see the opportunity to extend a player as significantly better than just trying to sign him once he reaches FA… but I’m quite open to being proven wrong on that point.

I always think we significantly overrate our ability to bring in top quality FAs here. (Not that Hardy is top-notch, but he’s the best of a fairly weak SS class)

I feel like we're overrating Hardy here

he played in 101 games last year and hit less than guys like Cliff Pennington, Edgar Renteria, Jimmy Rollins, Juan Uribe, Marco Scutaro, and Derek Jeter. He’s a massive upgrade over Cesar, but there’s a ton of guys who are.

I’d still take him over the guys listed there outside of Scutaro maybe. He won’t command a ridiculous salary like Rollins and Jeter would and I bet he plays better D than Jeter.

Anybody else disturbed by...

the fact that Toronto already seems to be way out in front of us again in the free agent sweepstakes? They didn’t get Uggla, but they were frontrunners for quite a while. They also snagged Rajai Davis to add speed & defense, which I think is one of those under the radar pickups that really help solidify the team. When the hell is McPhail going to show us that he means business? I’ve defended him for a long time but my fuse is really short these days. Jorge De La Rosa seems to be on our radar as well as Victor Martinez, correct? There’s a start! Go get them! Now! Don’t let them slip away! Spend some MASN $ for God’s sake.

Hell, everybody's out in front of us.

Shocker. Meanwhile, Andy will dick around waiting to get out-bid for Beltre and “aggressively” pursue De La Rosa? Not sold on him by a long shot and we give up a pick. Do we really need another lefty in the rotation? Much more interested in Gavin Floyd. And I thought V-Mart was a target, but it’s pretty quiet now.

by Fahrenheit 451 on Nov 18, 2010 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

V-mart may actually be a fit

He may be stuck at DH and part time catcher, most teams cant really use that but we could. Keep Luke at 1B, him at DH and backup catcher and that hole is filled for now. Leaves us flexibility too, if we go after a top 1B next year they could move luke to LF if Reimold or Pie dont show us anything more than being a 4th OF. 3B seems to be a lost cause unfortunately. Beltre is good, but i just dont trust him to be honest.

This is how I see it working...

VMart would be the every day 1B, Wieters the starting C, and Luke the everyday DH. When Matt sits, VMart moves to C, Luke plays 1st, and DH gets manned by Nolan/Felix. This way we dont have to carry a no-bat backup C, and we can be a whole lot deeper as far as late inning defense/offense on the bench., not to mention we’d never have a huge offensive downgrade regardless of how often they feel like resting Matt (that Tatum/Izzy/Atkins black hole at the end of the lineup still gives me nightmares).

I, too, am getting on board the VMart train

but you have to acknowledge that the majority of the contract that he signs (if it’s in Bmore anyway), he will (or ought to) be the team’s primary DH. And it is a little odd to give up draft picks and a lot of cash for a DH.

I actually get what you are saying

but if we cant land a better 1B in 2011, i’d be ok with it. Also, it in no way precludes us from chasing a top tier bat at 1st, as he still would have plenty of value to us as a DH and backup catcher. Point is he makes the team better regardless (and gives us a viable alternative in order to save Matt’s knees), and that works for me.

Floyd worries me moreso than Jorge

What does he top out at? 88?-89? I know velocity isn’t everything, but when he doesn’t have pinpoint control he gets absolutely murdered, and we just went through that with the mentor. I feel Jorge has more upside & may have a bit of an advantage (if only for a little while) over Floyd since our opponents have all seen Floyd much more than De La Rosa. Just my two cents ;-)

thoughts?

by KellRawLive on Nov 18, 2010 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

Can we stop with this de la Rosa thing?

He has never done anything in his career. He barely pitched 100 innings last year and in 09 he hit 185 in his only semi successful season. And I’m on my phone so I can’t check b-r but I believe his era+ that year was like 108. Unless Im missing something somewhere along the line, this guy is mediocre at best and will bring nothing to this team.

If you were a hotdog would you eat yourself? I know I would.

those stats are inflated because of his home park to a certain extent, no?

I admit, it’s a risk/reward situation, but what other alternatives do we have? We need someone to replace the mentor and De La Rosa is young with loads of talent.

by KellRawLive on Nov 18, 2010 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

his walk total isn't

over 4 batters walked per nine innings in each of his seasons in Colorado. That would definitely inflate coming to the AL East. It’d be the second coming of Danny Cabrera at best.

Trading young pitching

I thought that Steve M made a good case against trading any of the young pitchers. If we had 3 Brittons in AA and AAA, then we could afford to part with a pitcher or even two. Unfortunately, there is no obvious blue chipper behind Britton. Perhaps Hobgood will wean himself away from Dunkin Donuts and get in shape and Erbe will come back strong from surgery. Barring a breakout year from a couple of our “maybe” minor league pitchers, we don’t have enough pitching to spare.

by BaltoBen on Nov 18, 2010 10:35 AM EST reply actions

the obvious counterpoint is

if we’re trading unestablished commodities for established commodities, then we’re ostensibly trading a couple facedown cards for a king or an ace (not a pitching ace, but a….oh this analogy sucks).

The Orioles have a .315 winning percentage (34-74) against the Yankees and Red Sox over the last three seasons and finished last in the AL East each time. The Minnesota Twins had virtually the same winning percentage (.317) against the two juggernauts, losing 28 of 41 games, but have won two of the last three AL Central titles.

She's

very touchy today.

…But before I continue blogging throughout the offseason, let me just say this – I think you all know my personality by now, I can be feisty… but I’m fair. All I ask is that you are fair back. Lets not get into any cyber fights or say things that get us all fired up. One of the beauties of sports is that everyone has their own opinions — so lets respect them.
With that being said, Dan from Rockville — lets hug it out. I’m sorry if I upset you.
The other thing I think you all should have realized about me by now is I have to get the last word it. Haha. So… let me reiterate, I NEVER said the Orioles should trade Wieters. In fact, I said the Orioles wouldn’t if the opportunity arose. I did, and I’m sticking to it, say I’m not big on Wieters. And I’m entitled to my opinion. I like Matt and I hope he has a brilliant career. But prior to me arriving here all everyone kept telling me was, “oh wait until you see Matt Wieters. He’s an absolute stud.”

“One of the beauties of sports is that everyone has their own opinions.”

Wait, don’t you have to graduate third grade at least to be a blogger?

Oh dear, I’m starting a cyberfight.

Lets hug it out.

It goes beyond that...

Wieters has only been at the MLB level for 1.5 years. He played well-ish in his first half a year and then came back for his first full season and improved his defensive WAR a ton while being inconsistent at the plate.

If she’s “not high” on Wieters now – what does she think of Jonesie and Tillman?

that's what I said!

his defense improved vastly and a great hitter like him shouldn’t be struggling this much so I kind of chalked this season up as a moral victory. he didn’t put up gaudy stats but he was very, very solid behind the plate and managed the young pitching staff better than we probably expected him to. I still feel like there’s no reason to believe that he won’t be a legitimate hitter. 1.5 seasons just doesn’t give us enough evidence to work with.

Her response to commenter "Adam" is pretty solid too...
Yeah, you’re right. I did hear they were interested ….. In my blog I wrote the O’s aren’t in “serious discussions.” I want to hear those words. I want to hear, “are likely to land,” and “have made a significant offer,” or “have met with Beltre’s agent.” Not… “are interested.” It’s now reported the A’s have offered him five years $64M. Arg! Would love Beltre here.

So her biggest gripe is that media insiders aren’t reporting the Orioles as a likely destination. Ok, not much to say about that. That’s just dumb. Personally, I’d prefer to know that my GM is working his ass off without leaking little teasers to guys like Jon Heyman.

The word is “aggressive.” I need to see it. I want to see it

That is completely a Yankee fan thing

and I think Jen brought it with her. Every year talk radio goes on and on about how the Yankees need a good backup catcher, and every year they dont make the WS I hear about how they were really lacking at C after Posada. They have some fixation on backup catchers. I guess when your starter gets hurt every 3rd day and you’ve experienced all time great Yankees like Leyritz it just has to be priority #1.

Here's another....

…. hack paid to write a column:

No, my problem is why has it taken Showalter this long to piece together a staff? And since he still needs someone to coach third base, one can see he’s still got work to do.

I’m just concerned that if it’s taken Showalter and CEO Andy MacPhail this much time to round out the field staff, what effect, if any, this will have on locating the power bat or the corner infielder or the experienced starting pitcher or the shortstop the Orioles so desperately need?

…I realize it’s only late November, but come on guys. Let’s get something significant done quickly and efficiently, whether it’s swinging a trade or landing a proven veteran via the free-agent route, and not right before spring training begins.

Because surely, negotiations with John Russell are keeping Andy from talking to Adrian Beltre’s people.

free agent class

I’m not really sure that this free agent class is really all that weak. As teams get smarter about locking up their players, it would follow that players are going to free agency later and later. I mean, last year had, what…Holliday, Lackey and Bay as the big guys? Now that’s a shittastic class. Sure next year might be epic at first base, but I think that’s more the exception than the rule.

There is a report that Jeter turned down

3/63M from the Yankees. No one else is going to offer him 21M a year. It just isn’t going to happen. So, they’ll go back and forth for a month, but he’ll end up back in NY for close to that much.

Even still, the thought of him coming here for 15M a year is laughable… and on top of that, he isn’t worth it. All the intangibles in the world won’t make him any more than a $10M player by the time a 4 year contract is up, unless he starts spending an inordinate amount of time with Alex Rodriguez’ cousin. And as tough as it is to give him a compliment, at least Derek Jeter isn’t that type of guy.

I guess the question is:

Do the Yankees want all of them? They have the money do buy whatever they want, but it doesn’t mean Cashman is sitting there all excited to blow money on Jeter.

I can’t speak for how Yankees fans would feel if he walked, but I’ll tell you if a guy like Cal turned down comparable money I wouldn’t blame the Orioles if he took an obscene deal in Bumfuckistan.

Completely agree

Nobody…NOBODY is going to offer him any more than that. I don’t honestly think anyone is going to offer him anything even close to that.

However, Jeter does have the whole “he’s the face of the franchise and his been here forever” thing going for him. I don’t doubt that the Yankees really want to see him in pinstripes next year, so they might overpay to make sure of that. Might be a different story if he gets in the way of signing Lee and Crawford though.

The Jeter article kind of reminded me

this weekend I saw daveh for a few moments so that he could pick up the Matt Wieters and Nick Markakis bobbleheads I’ve been holding for him for months. We were wondering what bobbleheads they might offer next year, and we decided, obviously, on Carl Crawford and Cliff Lee, and my Yankee loving BFF (who was trying not to openly laugh at us, I think), says “Maybe they’ll sign Jeter and Mariano also,” And then it was Dave’s turn to try not to be mean, and he was like, “Well…I’d take Rivera.”

I believe Sun writers are prohibited from participating in postseason awards voting.

Which includes HOF voting. So I don’t think they vote for anything, unless that situation has changed.

probably because of conflict of interest

For example, it’s probably not a coincidence that the Tampa Tribune gave Price a first place vote. I’m not saying there’s vote buying going on but hometown writers like to vote for their players whenever possible to ensure friendly access.

yeah

I heard it’s like, if someone is honest about it and votes CC fifth maybe CC is all, “dude, c’mon” and doesn’t give that guy interviews and so the NY guy’s gonna vote CC first just so he can do his job and the award is tainted.

I really don't know why.

I mean, there is a stated reason that supposedly has something to do with journalistic integrity, but I don’t accept the reasoning.

When they had the HOF voting the year that Cal was going in, Peter Schmuck made mention of this. I e-mailed him and asked about why he wasn’t allowed to vote. I commented that it was a shame that none of the Baltimore media would be allowed to vote for Cal. He wrote back to me and said he supposed that was part of their thinking (though my understanding is the policy has been in place for years before that) but he found it disappointing, because he believed that all in all the integrity of the BBWAA has been sufficiently demonstrated.

I also feel like that is the case. Obviously, we will have disagreements with particular writers – if you look at the breakdown quoted above, there’s somebody who voted Felix as 5th for the Cy. Now, whatever that person’s reason was, I’m pretty sure it was stupid. But I get the sense that if that was an NY writer who was trying to boost CC’s chances, one way or another that would be internally, and probably informally, policed.

yeah, it's a mystery

I think what gets me is teh 28 votes. It’s fine, I guess, to not have each city get to have 2 votes, but I’m not sure why there wasn’t at least 1 baltimore vote. If they want to split the other 14 votes amongst national and international voters with some cities get represented twice, fine. But I’m really not sure why not one Baltimore voter was included. In the above voting, there are 2 Tampa voters than I can easily see.

If we (Baltimore) don't have the Sun guys, I'm not sure we have anybody.

Maybe Roch Kubatko, since he would have been in the BBWAA while he was with The Sun, and I know they are opening their ranks somewhat to people who are bloggers for known outlets (like ESPN.com’s Rob Neyer or Keith Law) rather than just typical beat writers. Reluctantly moving their way, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century on some fronts.

But I could see where being a part of MASN would exclude Roch, since MASN is owned by the Orioles.

I went and looked because I was curious

And also because this is the internet and you can find nearly anything.

http://bbwaa.com/constitution/

G. The Association shall also admit full-time members of internet sites under the following procedure:
1. The National Board of Directors each year prior to the national meeting at the World Series shall obtain a list of internet sites issued credentials by Major League Baseball for that year’s World Series. Employees of MLB.com shall not be eligible.
2. Active members attending the Annual Meeting at the World Series shall vote to accept or amend the MLB list of credentialed sites for the purposes of Association membership. A simple majority is needed to accept a site for membership.
3. The Association shall then accept membership applications from full-time employees of those sites whose primary job responsibility is to write about baseball.
4. Applicants who believe they qualify must submit appropriate fees by December 1 to the National Secretary-Treasurer.
5. The National Board of Directors will review all applicants between December 1and the National Meeting at the Winter Meetings to determine whether those applicants meet Association requirements.
6. The National Board of Directors will submit its findings and recommendations at the Winter Meetings National Meeting for a final vote by active members in attendance. A simple majority is required for an applicant’s admission.
7. Approved applicants may then choose to become national members or apply for membership to specific chapters, where further fees might apply.

Alas, I don’t think Camden Chat, or any fan blog, is going to qualify by this standard in the near future.

Press Box doesn’t count under current rules because farther up it specifies that it must be a daily newspaper. I think PB is only weekly, right?

Pacquiao would beat Mayweather to hell and back.

Hell he just sent Margarito to the hospital from breaking his face. Pacquiao was giving up 5 inches and over 15 pounds in that fight too. He is not only the best in the sport right now, but before it’s all said and done people may be calling him the greatest fighter ever. Mayweather has been ducking Pacquiao for the longest time and unfortunately I don’t think the fight will ever happen. Mayweather knows that he would be outclassed.

No.

What Manny has done is insane. Going from Light Flyweight (105 lbs.) to Light Middleweight (154 lbs.) ((he actually fought Margarito weighing 148)) and dominating everyone who was put up against him is incredible. He’s fought the top contenders over 9 different weight classes. If anyone out there is going to give him problems then they have had their opportunity to step up. No one has as of yet. Not even Floyd.
