Autumn, 1942. Europe lies crushed beneath the Nazi jackboot. The German Third Reich is at the height of its power. Hitler's Armies are charging through the heart of the Soviet Union towards the oil fields of Asia. One last obstacle remains, a city on the Volga, where the fate of the world is being decided - Open Thread.

Openthreadgrad!
Although it’s name has since been changed to Volgathreadgrad. And back in the day, of course, it was Threaditsyn.
"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." Churchill,1942-- a rebuilding year.
That movie was such an insult to the actual magnitide of the battle that took place there.
You would think a few snipers decided the fate of the Third Reich. Pretty dumb.
That movie focused on one particular sniper
as movies tend to concentrate on singular characters. I loved “Enemy At The Gates” and it’s made me seek out more books on the Seige of Stalingrad.
And I don’t think the movie tries to say a few snipers won the war. But the systematic targeting of Nazi officers by Soviet snipers was part of their overall plan to outlast the Germans at Stalingrad. That can’t be denied.

I'm not saying snipers didn't play a role. They did, but it was minimal. Snipers didn't account for more than a microscopic total of lives lost
I’m just saying that most folks, who don’t understand WW II history, probably came away from the movie with a distorted view of the magnitude of the battle, what it meant to the overall scheme of things and how the war played out.
The fact that you have made a decision to learn more about the battle speaks much for you, though.
As a student of 20th Century military history, the books that define it, the movies that define it, everything that defines it, I just wasn’t impressed with the movie. And it gave absolutely no impression to the casual viewer how cold it was for the soldiers on both sides.
Um, it's a movie.
It’s for entertainment. Never claims to be a documentary.

Thats absolutely correct
And you have movies for entertainment that are accurate, and those that aren’t. And I’m done.

Wait a minute......
…we make movies that are accurate? How did that get past the studio? We don’t even put people in movies who look like people!
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
And as a movie it does a hell of a job entertaining.
If you cant look past it’s historical innaccuracies and enjoy it for what it is, an entertaining movie, then I am sorry for your loss.

And people who watch JFK
probably think Lyndon Johnson ordered the JFK hit. I don’t think most people treat movies as historical truth.

No. You're right. They probably don't.
Hey, wait a minute. I thought I said I was done.
Hey, wait a minute, I guess I'm not done.
I thought you were referring only to Oliver Stone’s JFK. Actually, I think most people do treat movies as historical truth. Not because of stupidity, simply because they don’t know the true facts. Maybe I’m not giving them enough credit, maybe you’re giving them too much. Who knows?
and film is compelling and it's easy to believe the story as truth
Like David Fincher’s Zodiac – that movie pretty much points a finger right at some guy, and as an audience member, you sit there thinking “why didn’t they arrest that guy??? It’s so obvious!” Well, it’s obvious in the movie, but it’s just a movie and it’s based on a single dude’s perspective.
So I agree that filmed interpretations of history work their way into popular consciousness as “fact.” And I also agree with your criticisms of Enemy at the Gates.
Good point re Zodiac, an excellent film...
…at the end of which, as if in the “fine print”, you learn that the “obviously gulity” guy’s DNA doesn’t actually match…

But people still argue about Allen, and with some heat (though not always a lot of light).

Notre Dame vs Army at Yankee Stadium
While I’m really pulling for Army, Yankee Stadium, old or new, is only good for one thing. December 28, 1958.

Melewski on 40 man
Link. It’s pretty vanilla, really.
It’s also interesting that the O’s still have five spots left on their 40-man roster. Of course they will need a roster spot for any free agent they add or any of their own that they re-sign.
Maybe this a sign that they figure to be active in the market this winter. Plus, they can always drop a player or two or more from the roster later, if more spots are needed.
Also interesting: Florimon and Viola were left on the roster.

We are fucking idiots
Just stopping in with my regular ray of sunshine.
Seriously, though, I might murder Viola. Just to end the sadness he causes me.

you have been missed.
welcome back, if only briefly.

We go on hiatus in mid December until after the new year, so I’ll be around some then.

Peltzer for sure
Maybe Adams, but probably not. Maybe Johnson. Would have dumped Viola a long time ago, wouldn’t have put Angle on at all.

Any thoughts on Viola to Pittsburgh?

just buying time
there’s still more than a week left before the draft itself. I’m guessing they don’t want to take anyone off the 40-man before they have to. I mean, say they waived Viola and he got claimed, and then tomorrow we trade Luke Scott for some minor leaguers and end up with an extra 40-man spot. wouldn’t we feel stupid?
Why would we feel stupid?
Are we going to miss Pedro Viola? Fuck no.

Netflix Canada...
sucks for the most part, but it does allow me to catch up on shows that I didn’t watch before due to previously unavailable cable or satellite tv whilst living in the sticks or truck driving. The fact that the newest movie on there is Jennifer’s Body allows me to skip a really bad movie (so I hear) and watch shows like Dead Like Me, Weeds, Rescue Me from the beginning, and pretty much anything A&E. I still wish the movies would be a TAD bit newer though, but I do like the streaming.
