It's a really well-done piece of writing

I’ve got nothing against the guy, and it’s a great read, and it’s tangentially Os’-related. Seemed a no-brainer.

I'm just sayin'...

I don’t know the guy, he said whatever he said about me, but he wrote a good column that deserves a read. I don’t know the guy, haven’t met the guy, never heard of the guy or his writing until all this mess started, so I have no idea if he’s self-righteous or not. But that column is worth the 10 or fewer minutes it takes to read.

Interesting question posed by Sun blogger...

Who will be the best buy this off-season, ala Huff Daddy last year?

I am thinking Pena or Derrek Lee, and I think the former will be a much lower cost proposition.

The solution is clear

Adam Dunn. Give Washington a 1st, and let him play 1B like he wants. It’s not like we are good at drafting anyways.

I don't get it

people say Victor Martinez is overrated. he would be about 2 wins above replacement a year as a 1B (that’s assuming about an .830 OPS and average defense). you know what Adam Dunn’s value is? since 2006 he has been worth 10.6 WAR, or 1.7 a year. it’s simply impossible to exaggerate Dunn’s inability to field. over his career at 1B, Dunn is anywhere from -10 runs below average (Total Zone) to -14 (UZR) to -17 (DRS), and he’s only getting older. moreover, Dunn would be moving from the NL East to the AL East – that’s not going to improve his performance at all (see: Pat Burrell). but even if you assume he’d still give you a .900 OPS, you’re trading, what, 50-70 points of OPS for 10-15 runs on defense? Dunn doesn’t exactly come out on top there.

by ugen64 on Nov 27, 2010 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

I'm sorry

I messed up the calculation obviously. 10.6 / 5 = 2.1, not 1.7.

by ugen64 on Nov 27, 2010 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

those WAR numbers are dragged down by his shitty defense in LF. If he can play decent first base (like he did last season), he’s a 3 win player.

Your mother.

by birdman on Nov 28, 2010 3:20 AM EST up reply actions

VMart

His 830 career OPS is slightly above the average OPS for a firstbaseman. Plus he will be 32 next year and caught a number of games. I can’t imagine $12M will make much sense for him in 2012, nevermind the two years that will follow.

For the hundredth time

When you gauge Dunn’s value going back to 2006 you’re including 2.5 years of him playing the OF where his value was MUCH lower due to his defense. If you want to talk WAR for him as a 1B talk about 1/3 to 1/2 of 2009 and all of 2010 or don’t bother.

Loved the article

with Adam Jones. After travelling overseas a lot, I get an itch to see some baseball and it is nowhere to be found. I can admit it, and say that I have watched a little cricket here and there to try to get my fix, but it’s just a low quality version of baseball in my eyes.
