First thing! Don't forget to vote for us in the Mobbies! Now that Orioles Hangout, er, Tony's Take has been added, we don't have a shot in hell to win, but put up a good effort anyway, all right? Question of the Day: As was mentioned in yesterday's Bird Droppings (and slightly down below, too), our favorite surly Canadian had his option declined by the Mariner's yesterday, and is once again a free agent, along with a couple other rehab project starting pitchers (Brandon Webb, Justin Duchscherer). Last year the Orioles were said to be interested in one of these project pitchers but ultimately did not acquire any of them - and that was probably a good move as it would have been money wasted. But are you interested in a rehab pitcher project this offseason? -Andrew

Re: Question of the day
I’m not. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s rare that these rehab pitchers just stop being injury-prone. I think it’s been made pretty clear on CC that our farm system is not top tier, so we can’t just expect that if one of the rehab pitchers gets injured we will have a good replacement waiting on the wings. Anyone agree?
Where are my shoelaces?
I look at it the other way
I see these guys as the insurance. If one of our starters gets injured or is ineffective, we have a guy rehabbing to take his spot, and possibly be an upgrade. I’m not as high on any of these guys as I was last year, but if the right deal came along (say, a minor league one) I wouldn’t be against it. I wouldn’t break the bank for any of these guys though.
"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower
Yeah,
I think it might be worth it, just to have some extra depth so we don’t have to rush Britton. That assumes one of those guys is able to pitch by late April, though — I don’t know when they’re projected to be ready.
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
I look at them as cheap lottery cards (if they're cheap)
if you can sign Bedard to a minor league deal that seems like a no-brainer to me. If he sucks or never gets healthy who cares? If he miraculously returns to form you got yourself an ace for chump change. I think teams like the O’s who have money to spend should make these kinds of creative moves any time they can. That being said, I really won’t be excited if they sign Bedard because I’m not expecting him to be healthy.

More than that even, it has to do with the message your sending
Do we want to tell a budding star like Matusz that we don’t care what our record is year after year? In other words, sending out a bunch of scrubs and injury prone guys who are, unfortunately, bound to get injured (hence the title) is not a recipe for good team morale. It’s a matter of direction—will Matusz and Wieters really believe in this team when we sign players that have little potential to stay healthy?

also, they're not really good, either.
there are five posts in the last three months, including this one:
So I see Glynn Davis was named the organization’s fastest runner by Baseball America. Sounds about right since I heard he was faster than Xavier Avery and Kyle Hudson at the O’s mini camp in September.
BTW, when I saw him take BP at Aberdeen at the end of the year he was driving the ball pretty good including hitting one or two on top of the bullpen roof in left field. Basically he’s as fast as Hudson but with some pop. Now we have to see what kind of discipline he has against pro pitching.
He could be very high on the list next year or not on it at all. Either way he’s an exciting guy to get into the system.
Wow. That’s some insightful analysis.

it would be a nice prequel type deal centering on how Cliff Lee’s character came to be on the Orioles, where he has his pivotal scene in which he convinces Nolan Reimold to stop worrying about his babymamadrama and then Reimold hits the first ever 6-run home run.

Being more serious about the QotD
I think if you look back at last winter, yes, none of the rehabbing pitchers offered any of the value they signed for (Bedard didn’t pitch to even one batter, for example), but the Orioles ended up spending a non-trivial amount of money on their own band of projects and misfits that didn’t work out at all – and had a ceiling much, much lower than Erik Bedard.
Maybe a better way of looking at this is in hindsight: would you have rather had Bedard or Millwood last year for similar money? One was a big question to give you much of anything – but if he did they could be spectacular, one was much more likely to give you a lot of mediocre innings but not much more. Or did they fill totally different roles that were mutually exclusive?
No offense, but....ENOUGH WITH THE FIELDER/GONZALEZ TRADE PROPOSALS.
Well, going into last season the O's knew they needed someone who was able, not necessarily capable, of pitching.
Bergy was questionable due to his injuries, and Arrieta was not ready coming out of spring training. So the rotation had a void which needed to be filled by any warm body, hence Millwood.
This season shapes up differently, as the rotation could be considered ‘set’ already with Guts, Matusz, Bergy, Till, & Arrieta. Even with this seemingly set rotation it would be wise, in my opinion, to explore some of the potential upside in either Bedard or Webb. I would love to see Webb brought in for the right price. He was one of the best sinker ball pitchers in the game and his knowledge and experience could certainly teach Bergy and / or Britton some things, possibly making them more effective in the future.
"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man." ~ The Dude
So you like Webb because he could mentor them?

Heh. I guess you could put it that way.
"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man." ~ The Dude
let's forget the mentoring stuff
which is, frankly, baseless. Does it make sense to take out 5 million dollars and say there is an 80% chance we’re just throwing this money away but a 10% chance we’ll hit the lotto jackpot? The Orioles have a surplus, but it’ll disappear quickly with those types of deals when they still need three infielders at least.
But I’m still saying yes it does. Without the jackpot, we’re still looking at probably a sub-.500 season (probably), and if you’re looking at a sub-.500 season, I think you are behooved to play the lottery as much as possible.
No offense, but....ENOUGH WITH THE FIELDER/GONZALEZ TRADE PROPOSALS.
I guess the question is,
if we don’t spend ~$5 million (or however much) on a rehab project, what would we do with the money instead?
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
I'm not sure its entirely baseless
I’d point to Halladay teaching Hamels the cutter as evidence that there can be some positive effect. Though i wouldn’t really rely on that very much as a reason for signing someone.
Right. I wouldn't argue to sign Webb for any 'mentoring'-type effect.
I would sign him because he was an great pitcher prior to the injury, and it could be worthwhile to see if he has retained some, if not all, of that previous ability.
This is what the A’s did with Ben Sheets last year. That move didn’t work out quite as they would have liked since they weren’t able to trade him prior to him reinjuring himself. But it looked to be a shrewd gamble early on when he was showing signs of his previous ability.
"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man." ~ The Dude
of today's pitchers...
seems like sheets, harden, bedard and bonderman are this type. guys that have a track record or rep for getting hurt, but have shown some good results when healthy. i think of those guys that actually pitched last year, results were not so hot.

okay, baseless is probably harsh
but, and I said it last year, if the Orioles wanted someone to teach their young pitchers something (how to act? how to pitch? how to deal with losing? I’m not really sure what Millwood was supposed to mentor the young’uns on, exactly), then hire a pitching coach to teach the pitchers how to throw a cutter. There’s no way a mentor is worth even an extra one million dollars.
No offense, but....ENOUGH WITH THE FIELDER/GONZALEZ TRADE PROPOSALS.

I can't say "for similar money."
Because $9M for Kevin Millwood was beyond ridiculous, and $9M for Bedard would have been ridiculous as well. But I would have rather taken a chance on Bedard. Millwood served a purpose last year, I suppose, but even knowing the Bedard didn’t pitch at all, I still think it would have been worth the risk.
I am still pro going after a high risk guy this offseason provided the money isn’t taken from someone else that would really make a big impact on the team. But I’d rather throw money at those kind of guys every year than continue to waste it on old or completely washed up guys like Millwood and Atkins and Tejada, or on guys who, even if they are effective, wouldn’t have as much impact, like Gonzalez.

I don’t quite understand the question. With hindsight, you obviously take Millwood because he actually played. Bedard was the DL all season and only made one rehab start before re-injuring his shoulder.
Your mother.
yeah, that sounds stupid when I say it like that
my question rephrased is, do you want the Orioles to go for a big-risk, big-reward pitcher or another guy who is unlikely to get hurt but unlikely to be impressive at all (i.e. Kevin Millwood), and that’s saying if you could have either for the same money.
Or, do the Orioles not need more starting pitching depth?
No offense, but....ENOUGH WITH THE FIELDER/GONZALEZ TRADE PROPOSALS.
The QotD all depends on the money.
Would I want Erik Bedard for a $1 Million base/incentives per number of starts or IP kinda deal? Sure.
Would I want him for even $5 Million a year with his history? Fuck no.
It’s always good to have pitching options locked up – and if we learned one thing from this season, the word “set” referring to roster and rotation spots should never be used around youngsters. But a reclamation project is what it is. A roll of the dice – and one we should never bet too high on.
The QotD all depends on roster spot
If Bedard would sign a minor league deal, then sure. If you could make it for a $2M guarenteed with a couple club options, then I would be all for it. I wouldn’t want to waste a roster spot on him though.

In retrospect, it probably was in the bag. The Kratovil staff knew they were doomed, probably a month ago. They all figured a 4-point loss. NO ONE saw a 13-point smacking in the offing. No one.

I just looked it up and the guy who beat Harris in 2008 is a blue dog. I’m not really a fan of blue dogs. Still…is Andy Harris pretty bad?
Where are my shoelaces?
In my opinion, as someone who was born and raised on the Eastern Shore, (although I do live in Delaware currently)
Yes. The people of the Eastern Shore don’t have a true representative voice in Andy Harris.
But’s he’s going to Washington, so let’s see what legislation he focuses on and let that speak for itself.

Sort of. I don’t like big cities anyway, so not Baltimore specifically. I hate DC. I hate Philadelphia. I hate Baltimore. I don’t hate New York but I hate its sports teams and its media outlets (although NYT is pretty good). So, you get the picture.

I am exhausted today! Who schedules a college football game on a Wednesday night? Oh that’s right – the Big East… cause we suck and ESPN treats us like the red-headed step-child that we are. And my team lost by one point, after USF recovered three of their own fumbles, including one in the endzone for the game winning score. At least now I have more ammunition for my theory that Tampa has the worst fans in the world. If, at any time, the two teams stopped playing football, and met at the 50 yardline for tea and crumpets, I don’t think a single USF fan would have noticed. What a bunch of apathetic morons. You can’t sell out when your baseball team clinches a playoff birth, your 5-2 football teams games are all blacked out, and no one even knows that you have a first place hockey team.

1970 Os
Quite a team. The Os of the Frank Robinson era spoiled me. As the article points out, the team had wonderful players besides Frank/Brooks/Jim. Paul Blair was an amazing center fielder, who might be in the HOF if he had never been beaned. Mark Belanger was an artist at short, although not so much at the plate. With MVP Boog Powell in the lineup, opposing pitchers did not have the luxury of pitching around our good hitters, there were too many of them.
At that time, the big rivalry in the AL was between the Os and the Yanks. The Sox, with their immense fan base, were a sleeping giant that had not yet awoken. The Os also had a great owner in Jerry Hoffberger. He let Cashen and Dalton run the show. I thought that this was the way it would always be. Sigh.

My grandma has full-on dementia—can’t even remember her own name, babbles incoherently…it’s an awful way to end your life. It’s slow and it’s depressing for everyone around you.
Where are my shoelaces?
My grandmother was like this before she died as well
basically the last eight years of her life, she didn’t know where she was. And eventually couldn’t feed herself. Something for me to look forward to, I guess. Although, to be honest, sometimes I spend a few minutes analyzing the fact that I will one day die and it scares the shit out of me, so fading into the twilight of dementia might not be so bad if I lose the fear of dying.
I have no idea what having dementia is like BUT
It seems to me that slowly losing coherence and awareness of the world around you has to be somewhat frustrating, even if you don’t understand why you’re frustrated. Trying to remember anything and coming up short…seems like a pretty shitty way to go.

Fair enough
I think he was in the wrong, that’s all. My mom had breast cancer so it’s a pretty sensitive issue in my family.
Where are my shoelaces?
hard to say whether he crossed the line or not if you weren't there to hear what he actually said
it could also be argued (and is being argued, actually) that villanueva is a publicity hound for tweeting it.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
Yes, that's very true
But he IS actually a cancer patient—was it a joke? Maybe. Was it a playful jibe gone wrong? Extremely possible as well. Still, you don’t jibe about diseases as debilitating as cancer—it’s just wrong.
Where are my shoelaces?
a couple of things
1. Check your facts. Villaneuva is not a cancer patient. He has an autoimmune disorder that hs nothing to do with cancer.
2. KG is saying he called Villanueva “a cancer to his team.” While I find that doubtful, the truth is, I wasn’t there, I didn’t hear the quote. So I can’t say he crossed the line. Unless you were there and heard him say differently, I don’t think you can say he crossed a line either.
If KG says, “You run so slow, you should be in a wheelchair” on the court, is it insulting to handicapped people? To elderly people? Probably. But then again, I think most trash talk is going to be offensive to one group or another. Just like most comedy is.
The world doesn’t deal in absolutes.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
and by the way,
my wife and I joke about cancer ALL. THE. TIME.
Humor can be a great medecine.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
I don't mind that you joke about cancer in the privacy of your own home or anywhere else for that matter
But a public figure should not, in my opinion, joke about anything that serious or touchy.
Where are my shoelaces?
Calling someone a cancer patient is more dumb than offensive
Given that it’s kind of a binary situation – either you are a cancer patient or you aren’t – that has absolutely no business being a pejorative anyway.
I think most/all of us have known someone who has gone through having cancer. Many probably did not survive. My grandfather passed away back in July and one of the things that was wrong with him was cancer.
To paraphrase Jerry Seinfeld, I’m not offended as a relative of a cancer victim. I’m offended as a comedian.
