Friday Bird Droppings

My fellow Birdlandians, I owe you an apology. I wrongly assumed that we would get steamrolled by the masses at Orioles Hangout, but you have proven me wrong. With the voting for the Mobbies reaching the halfway point, we are holding strong with Goliath. Today is our second consecutive day in first place in the Orioles category. We remain the underdog, to be certain, but my faith has been renewed thanks to your loyalty and tenacity. Please continue voting daily (including over the weekend!). To quote our favorite bubble blowing centerfielder, "We might as well just win this."

And while you're voting for us, don't forget the rest of the SB Nation ticket. Vote Testudo Times for best Terps blog and Baltimore Beatdown for best Ravens blog.

Question of the Day: In case you missed it, free agency rules are a little different this year, with everybody being granted free agency (no more filing for it) immediately and the exclusive negotiating window reduced to five days (instead of fifteen) after the World Series ends. That means, in theory, that there will be more hot stove news sooner...but walking-definition-of-conservative Andy MacPhail is undoubtedly still going to take his time. Is this a fatal flaw of our fearless leader, or merely a harmless (albeit annoying) quirk? -Andrew

Former major leaguer Wayne Kirby agrees to become Orioles' first base coach and outfield instructor
T-Bone is out, Kirby is in. He'll be the first base coach and outfield instructor. So that's Kirby, Jim Presley, and Rick Adair who have been added to the staff. Juan Samuel is being brought back to coach third, and Mark Connor will probably be the pitching coach. That just leaves bench coach, which will hopefully go to Don Wakamatsu so that I can hear Jim Palmer try to pronounce his name on a regular basis.

1. Yes.
2. The former seems to be a synonym for “reading”: no one is accused of “living in the weeds” while visiting a website, while people are charged with “lurking” at such places.

I was planning on being lazy and going when they play in

Clearwater or Dunedin. But the schedule is pretty weak for that this year (two weekday afternoon games vs. Phillies and one SS game vs. Blue Jays). I might have to suck it up and take the hour and a half drive down to Sarasota… at least it is better than Ft. Lauderdale.

Best breakfast within 200 miles. Get there early as it is PACKED before the games. But it is worth it. If you have an iron stomach, I suggest the Redneck Benedict. Half eggs benedict, half biscuits and gravy, all delicious!

You staying by the beach or by the stadium?

If you are doing the strip club thing

I would suggest going to Tampa. There are a plethora of good ones on Dales Mabry, near the Bucs Stadium. It’s a hike from the beach, but they get sketchy in pinellas. If you happen to go over to Dale Mabry, and you are into craft beer, Cigar City Brewery is on Spruce St., and its the best around. They have a tasting room attached to the Brewery, and they fill growlers to go… just sayin’. There is a Yeungling factory, too, (since you guys are from Philly) but they only do tours M-F during the daytime. It’s a decent tour, and they give free samples after.

As for the beach… in March its gonna be packed, but that is a good thing because there are always a plethora of good looking ladies. Just don’t leave the beach during the day and expect to get back in under 2 hours. Traffic sucks. Sheppard’s is always a good time at night.

Good Luck… You guys should have a blast.

Jim Johnson is arbitration eligible

That’s good news for him, but certainly cuts a hair deeper into the Orioles surplus this winter (although…honestly, the more I think about it, the less likely it is that there are players that the Orioles might realistically be in on that could actually cost enough to bring the O’s back to 2010 opening day payroll levels).

QotD

Andy is a slow poke, but I don’t think it’s hurt him so far. Can you think of anyone he’s missed out on because of his slowness? I think he’ll be fine. If he messes up this off-season it will be because he’s not willing to spend money on the good players, or he tries to find some more stupid reclamation projects like Garrett Atkins.

You never know when someone is gonna sneak up on ya at the dolphin show! -wrb1990

by Stacey on Nov 5, 2010 9:55 AM EDT reply actions

I tend to agree

and we certainly aren’t privy to the wheelings and dealings, but what I really wonder about is how much of an “extra mile” kind of recruiter he is. Is that overblown a bit? Maybe. But, for example, Roch was writing about Adam LaRoche yesterday and how he spurned the O’s for the same basic money in Arizona*. What if Andy had been more aggressive in a non-monetary way with LaRoche (not that Adam was great shakes or anything, but still)? Or was he (I doubt it, but that’s merely a hunch)? That’s what I really wonder about.

*Thus totally disproving the “Garret Atkins was always going to be our first basemen” that MacPhail tried to sell us. The Beav signed December 22. LaRoche signed January 13. Not that it would have made a big difference…but I totally could’ve swallowed F’Atkins a lot easier at third than at first.

No offense, but....ENOUGH WITH THE FIELDER/GONZALEZ TRADE PROPOSALS.

by Andrew_G on Nov 5, 2010 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I never believed that "always the first baseman" thing

I guess that stuff like the LaRoche stuff we’ll never really know about, and while LaRoche would have saved us from F’Atkins (perhaps), how much would he have really helped?

I know this isn’t really about the question of the day at all but the most frustrating thing to me about Andy MacPhail is that, so far, he seems to be just buying these one year guys who won’t hurt or help the club in the long run, which makes it seem like he’s relying on the young guys on the team already to provide the contending core of this team. And that’s fine, but you gotta get SOME free agents that will do something.

You never know when someone is gonna sneak up on ya at the dolphin show! -wrb1990

by Stacey on Nov 5, 2010 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

counterpoint

it isn’t like there have been a glutton of long-term fixes available on the free agent market, and the guys who are out there – like Carl Crawford or Matt Holliday – why would they come to Baltimore if the money is about the same and they can play in Boston or LA or New York or Philadelphia or Texas? We’d have to overpay by a crippling amount to bring them in, and that’s just really bad gee emming.

I really think we need to develop our own core before the long-term free agents will even really consider the Orioles a serious option. That’s just the sad truth about it.

No offense, but....ENOUGH WITH THE FIELDER/GONZALEZ TRADE PROPOSALS.

by Andrew_G on Nov 5, 2010 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with developing the core

And like we’ve said, it’s hard to really know what he thinks because no smart GM is going to put his thought process out there, but I guess it just irks me when I hear about how Garrett Atkins is being signed for a year because of Brandon Snyder and shit.

You never know when someone is gonna sneak up on ya at the dolphin show! -wrb1990

im not sure that was a brandon snyder-based move

Carlos Delgado NYM (B)
Nomar Garciaparra OAK
Jason Giambi COL
Ross Gload FLA
Aubrey Huff DET
Nick Johnson WAS (B)
Adam LaRoche ATL (B)
Kevin Millar TOR
Robb Quinlan LAA

by Andrew_G on Nov 5, 2010 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I know, I know

I guess I’m just frustrated. But I remember MacPhail saying, and maybe later I’ll go back and look for the quote, but that because of the minor league options coming up (Snyder, Bell), they think guys like Atkins and Tejada are good moves.

You never know when someone is gonna sneak up on ya at the dolphin show! -wrb1990

by Stacey on Nov 5, 2010 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions

well, with third base that seemed pretty smart

heck, Tejada was asked about Josh Bell at his press conference (whcih was hysterical). It didn’t work out, the prospects didn’t develop at the speed desired, but again, it would have been different if A-Rod and Evan Longoria and Chipper Jones were all available and in their primes.

In the context of “it’s Joe Crede or Miguel Tejada or Nick Johnson”, I think saying “Well, we have Brandon Snyder and Rhyne Hughes and Josh Bell and they might be ready in a year” is 100% the right thing to say.

This year it’s different, because Brandon Snyder is obviously not going to happen, and Andy can’t say “Well, we want Adrian Gonzalez, so we need a one year rental”.

traded cash or a PTBNL for Miguel Olivo, only to decline his option so that they can offer him arbitration and (hopefully) get a draft pick. Isn’t this the kind of thing the O’s should be doing, considering the money we have to spare?

How much is the 45th pick in the draft worth?

Is there any value to that pick? The Jays gave up $500K (Olivo buy out) and a PTBNL for that pick. It certainly seems like a good idea, but I wonder at what dollar amount would that strategy not be a good idea?

Thanks for posting that. I hate to be an iconoclast, but since I loathe UZR, I have a some difficulty accepting those values. However, it is a good guide at the very least. Just looking at random years supplemental picks, it does seem like this move could be a great one or completely irrelevant. I think what strikes me is why did the Rockies do this. Surely they aren’t oblivious to the value of these picks…

their catching situation is different

they could simply not want to risk Olivo accepting. It’s sort-of win-win, since both teams got something when they weren’t going to, and they aren’t in direct competition with each other so there’s little downside.

The Orioles totally should have been in on this shit, though. It reflects poorly that they weren’t. If James F were still with us he’d be turning bright red and cursing at the top of his lungs.

good news bad news for the orioles

The bad news is that we are very clearly behind the rest of our division in our manipulations and valuing of top 100 draft picks, which puts our weak farm system in a bad position to improve when its already behind everyone else.

The good news is that the players want to get rid of free agent compensation, so maybe our disadvantage will be shortlived if we don’t adapt.

I was just looking at the list of Type A and Type B's

and the Rays have 4 Type A free agents and 3 Type B. That is a lot of potential draft picks. Obviously they won’t offer arbitration to all of them (Brad Hawpe?), but still, giving TB that many players to develop is pretty depressing.

On the flipside, I suppose

They might not offer to Wheeler, Balfour, or Benoit for fear that they might accept while they are trying to shed payroll. In which case that would leave some solid bullpen arms available without compensation.

by tflach2 on Nov 5, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

the arbitration deal is awfully tricky for a team in tampa’s position. Boston could afford to gamble on those arms (since worse case scenario is a pretty solid bullpen), but the Rays, I would be surprised if most of their guys got arbitration offers.

No offense, but....ENOUGH WITH THE FIELDER/GONZALEZ TRADE PROPOSALS.

by Andrew_G on Nov 5, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Crawford and Soriano definitely

because they are both going to decline. The other 5 are tough. Wheeler and Balfour are both A level, and I don’t think anyone will give them a better deal than what they’ll get out of arbitration if it will cost the new team an early pick. So they would probably both accept arbitration. Hawpe is not getting offered, and will try to find whatever he can get (we could use a free-falling former Rockies slugger, right?). That leaves Pena and Benoit. Who knows what they’ll do with them.

Calorie Counter Android app

http://www.appbrain.com/app/calorie-counter-by-fatsecret/com.fatsecret.android

I went to the Olive Garden a few weeks ago and downloaded this app. I ended up getting a lunch portion of Chicken Scampi: 740 calories, 38g fat (58%), 14g Saturated Fat (70%), 1350 mg Sodium (56%). Could be worse, I guess.

I used to get Chicken Alfredo whenever I went there. I know alfredo isn’t ever mistaken for a healthy dish, but here’s the info: 1440 calories, 82g Fat (126%), 48g Saturated Fat (240%), 2070mg Sodium (86%).

That’s all on top of breadsticks (150 calories each), salad, and drinks.

Can you download new widgets?

I have the Epic and I hate Samsung widgets. I want a good clock/weather widget.

Yes

Here’s a good one:

http://mobiputing.com/2010/10/fancy-widget-relaunches-now-with-less-htc-sense-cloning/

It basically emulates the giant clock/weather widget on the Evo, but due to copyright concerns they just updated the styling a little bit (the new version is the picture on the right).

Now if you like to tinker with your phone and want to root it and install a custom ROM that removes all that Samsung BS, here’s a good link to get you started:

Not for the faint of heart, but can be fun if you’re in to that sort of thing.

QOTD

I don’t really think AM’s “deliberate” style matters. There’s no point in signing a guy like Danys Baez before the Braves can even decline offering him arbitration, just to be aggressive. I suppose there is aggressively smart and aggressively stupid, and most fall into the latter category. Plus, it’s not as if AM can’t make deadline deals, he has done it a few times already (Trachsel, Sherrill, Tejada).

What frustrates me more are some of his plans…giving up the pick for Gonzalez, not utilizing the Rule 5 more effectively, wasting at bats and playing time on guys who have very little chance to be on the next good Oriole team.

I agree that the fairest way to hold any kind of contest

Is to let each person only vote once. But it says from the get-go that you can vote once per day, which is what I have been doing, and what I’ve been encouraging others to do (and which is what ScottieBaseball encouraged OH members to do when he first posted it).

But the Sun doesn’t care about fair. It’s the American Idol mentality.

I also don’t think that it’s much of a hassle to vote every day, or that it’s only for people with nothing to do but sit around and vote. Most of us visit CC every morning, it’s not hard to take a minute and click the link and vote.

You can vote with different accounts but you can’t vote mutlple times with the same account.

Look at some of the blogs high on the list. Seriously, this voting scheme is a joke. The fact that you have to vote in two different categories is a joke.

Note, is it only a joke because his blog isn’t first. I don’t see what’s wrong with having a best blog and specialty categories either.

If I had known the voting mechanism was going to be an exercise of time and desire rather than true popularity, I would have just allowed the site to be taken off.

Query to James F

Are you going to analyze the more recent drafts?

Also, I was estranged from the Os until AM was hired. I, therefore was not following the drafts until then. Were Rowell and Snyder considered to be good picks by BA and the other baseball pundits? I know that Hobgood was criticized by the well-informed, but I don’t whether the other two recent first round apparent busts were considered strange picks.

Thanks

SI's Ben Reiter has listed

his top 50 free agents and where he thinks “they fit best”, which I dunno what he means since he thinks Johnny Damon fits best in San Fran when he obviously does not – but I can see the Giants going with Damon for sure.

Anyway, two Orioles notes of his pure speculation (but hey, the news well is dry as your mother-in-law’s thanksgiving turkey*, so let’s dig in): Ty Wigginton to Toronto, Derrek Lee to Baltimore. I say hooray for both (if they happen).

So, what do we offer Lee, Derrek?

He made 13M last year. Clearly we don’t offer him anywhere near that. 2 and 10? He has similar career numbers and a similar age 34 season with Fred McGriff, who went on to hit 135 more HRs. So it’s possible that he could have some left in the tank.

Of course he has similar career numbers to Shawn Green as well, who was done at age 34, so there is always that.

I'd offer 1 year 8 million with a player option

similar in thought to what Beltre got last year. I might even go up to ten million if he’d take a one year deal. An overpay, sure, but it keeps flexibility for us, keeps him tradeable, let’s him try to regain some market value for next year, and gives us the guy I think fits the team best in 2011.

Of course, I can totally see the bidding going crazy and him getting 13+ per year for three years. In which case no thank you.

No offense, but....ENOUGH WITH THE FIELDER/GONZALEZ TRADE PROPOSALS.

by Andrew_G on Nov 5, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I would rather Casey Kotchman

He had a horrible defensive year in 2010 but normally he’s a terrific defender. He’s a solid 1 win player the last few years except for 2010. Unless there’s an injury that has changed his ability to play defense, I would rather him on the cheap ($2M) than sign Lee if the later is going to cost more than $6M.

Your mother.

by birdman on Nov 5, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

kotchman can't hit though

Lee was a 2 WAR player in 2010 (fangraphs)

I’m very skeptical of him of improving next year in the AL East especially since his body is breaking down. Kotchman, coming off of a bad year, will be very cheap and offer similar production because of his defensive skills.

he can be a replacement lever player, maybe even a 1 win player if his bat can hit in the .700 OPS range.

I don't think you can sign lee for less than $6 for a 1 yr deal

I think he’ll want 2 years or more money, and i think it’s a reasonable request. He still hit 19 HRs last year. Someone will give it to him. I don’t want Casey Kotchman anywhere near my team. I’d rather re-sign Wigginton. At least I like him, and know what to expect, which isn’t much.

If we have a 1st baseman next year that hits ~.210, has good defensive skills, and is looking for a bounce back year at the plate… his name better be Carlos Pena.

The dude will have to be around a 3 win player to be worth that money. I don’t see a player coming off a 2 win season making a bounce back in the AL East.

I can’t imagine anybody putting him in the OF.

Also this is sort of stupid – we don’t have to give him a black or white choice. Offer him the most money and tell him we want him to play first and DH and then figure out how much it makes sense to have him do either. I’m not convinced that Luke would be much better than Dunn at 1st anyway.

I love DRS.

It strikes me as so much better than UZR, I don’t understand why the latter still seems to be the go-to stat (and why they don’t at least average the two for their WAR calculations).

At least FRS gives me a positive defensive stat to look at on Markakis’s page…

So,

are we talking about getting a 1B because we really want one, or because we assume we’re going to sign one and might as well figure out who we’d prefer? I know I’ve beaten this horse to death, but I’d like to see Pie actually get a full season in LF, and have Scott and Reimold split 1B/DH duties, so both of them get to play every day, too.

Am I the only one who would prefer this, or are we just figuring that since it’s not going to happen, we might as well talk about the FAs? Just trying to get a feel for where everyone is on this topic. As a follow-up: what do we do with Luke/Felix/Nolan if we have a new 1B playing every day?

I think they'll go after a FA

They never seemed interested in giving Luke much of a chance there, although if memory serves he played there a bit more towards the end of the season. It’s one of the big mysteries, why they don’t give him a chance. If they’d given him an extended chance this year we’d know for sure going into 2011.

Reimold

I think a lot of this depends on how the Orioles feel about Nolan Reimold. I still like Reimold a lot, but I’m not sure how much I trust him (and Pie) to be healthy and/or effective in 2010. As it is, the Orioles don’t need to do much. But, if Pie gets injured and Reimold can’t put 2010 in the past, the team is going to be relying on the likes of Scorey again.

On some level this is why I favor a 1 year deal to a slugger because one would in hope in 12 months the Orioles have a better sense of what they have in Reimold and Pie and what may be available (Gonzalez, Fielder).

by dfa on Nov 5, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, this is about what I'm assuming to be the case.

It’s almost like we need to sign somebody for depth, because if we don’t, then if somebody gets injured or just plays horribly, we’re screwed and have to bring up Brandon Snyder or somesuch. But it seems like a Catch-22, because if we do bring in a free agent 1B, then we can’t get Pie and Reimold both a full season of at-bats, so there will likely still be question marks about at least one of them.

Carlos Pena

I think this is why I favor a guy like Carlos Pena. I don’t think he will cost more than 1 year, and either his BABIP favors a bounceback or his LD% indicates he’s done. If he is hitting 200 on June 15, you can dump him, or if he has 25 homers in July you can deal him.

The NFL Network's Top 100 of all time

I thought Johnny U should have broken the Top 5, but can you believe the nerve of Deion Sanders saying he (Sanders) should have been ranked “3ish or 4ish.” At least according to Mike and Mike on ESPN 2. What an idiot.

by DJAY on Nov 5, 2010 3:31 PM EDT reply actions

That was a fucking joke

he was an a-maz-ing cover corner, but he couldn’t tackle for shit. When you are missing a huge part of your game, you don’t get to be top 10. Suck it up.

Damn I hate Deion Sanders…

Also, I don’t think I love Rice at #1 either. The guy was great, and i’m not taking anything (or much at least) away from him, but he did have a couple of the best QB’s ever throwing to him. Top 10 sure, but not #1. I’d switch him and LT probably, but I just loved watching LT play and i’m a bit of a homer with him, so whatever.

There's a good argument for Montana

of course, the same problem would be there with him as well. The guy got to throw to arguably the greatest receiver ever. The top 5 were Rice, Jim Brown, LT, Montana, and Walter Payton.

"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower

by daveh873 on Nov 5, 2010 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it's different with Montana, though

Yes, he had the best receiver of all time…but watching old games (I know I’m not old enough to remember any of the Montana years) on ESPN Classic or something: NO ONE could master the no-look pass like Montana. Pure brilliance.

He couldn’t only throw to Jerry, while Jerry only had Montana to throw to him.

As for Payton, the thing about him that I know this is about play on the field, but he was such a stand-up, exemplary guy off it that you can’t help but idolize him. I maintain that he’s the greatest RB of all time, with Barry Sanders a close second.

Also, I think Rice’s stats are a bit inflated because on the longevity of his career. There are few football players who played for as long as Jerry, and I remember correctly, he started to decline. I honestly can’t think of another WR even close to his caliber (I suppose Randy Moss and TO are up there), so he’s no question the greatest WR of all time. But player? I’m not buying it.

Where are my shoelaces?

by DCO'sfan on Nov 5, 2010 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

The thing about Rice's longevity

is that he was only able to stick around that long BECAUSE he was so good. Most receivers decline very rapidly after a few years in the league, but Rice was so damn good that his decline was still better than most receivers’ primes. The guy was a legit, rare talent.

As for WR’s that are coparable to him, the top 100 shows Rice at 1, Don Hutson (’30’s Packers receiver) at 9, and then the next WR is Moss at 65. He really has no peer. Still, I wouldn’t go #1 player of all time.

by daveh873 on Nov 5, 2010 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

True...unlike a certain someone who NEEDS to retire

Still, I don’t think you can put any WR as the best of all time. You might say that all positions are important, but I honestly think that a good QB can make most receivers look good. Like 2010 Peyton Manning. Is Garcon that good? Probably not, but Peyton made him look great.

That was a compliment to the QB’s—I’m not trying to undermine Rice’s career achievements. I’m sure Montana could do very well without Jerry Rice, and Rice still did well without Montana. In that way, their greatness didn’t depend on their compatibility on the field. Does that make any sense?

I think CB, QB, and possibly LB are all more important than WR. WR’s come a dime a dozen…NOT WR’s like Rice, of course, but you don’t depend on a WR on the field as much as you do a good QB, a shutdown corner, or a dominant LB (especially MLB). I think importance has to be a factor in evaluating the greatest player of all time.

Where are my shoelaces?

by DCO'sfan on Nov 5, 2010 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I know these types of lists are always so subjective

But I liked the way Sports Illustrated did it several years ago when they ranked the best of all time by position. I was trying to find a link to it but no joy. As I recall, they had the two best QBs of all time listed as Montana and Unitas. And, as I also recall, they really didn’t go with a 1-2, but rather the best two at each position. But maybe someone has a better recollection of it than I do. I’m sure Rice was one of the two receivers, but at this point, I really only remember the QBs.
