Orioles Insider: Orioles have made several offers to free agents
Apparently, Andy MacPhail has made lots of offers to free agents, we just haven't heard about them. Get on that, Baltimore press corps!

Orioles Insider: Revisiting the Type A free agent list
"After last night’s deadline for free agents to accept or reject arbitration, there are 10 Type A players remaining that would cost the Orioles a draft pick if they signed them this offseason. They are: third baseman Adrian Beltre, first basemen Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko, outfielders Carl Crawford and Jayson Werth, starters Cliff Lee and Carl Pavano, and relievers Grant Balfour, Scott Downs and Rafael Soriano." So, do we sign any of them? And how in teh world is Grant Balfour a Type A free agent?

Four Teams That Want JJ Hardy | StarTribune.com
"The Orioles had Cesar Izturis at short, who I think started the year with a ton of praise. You can guess how that went. Actually you probably can’t – it was that bad. Beyond normal words kinda bad." Glad to know we aren't the only ones that noticed.

Type A free agents and the draft pick...

You know, if we just sign all those guys (or most of them, minus the relievers), then we really dont lose much in the way of the draft while getting a whole lot better. I could live with an OF of Nick, Werth, and Crawford, Konerko at 1st, Dunn at DH, Beltre at 3rd, and adding Lee and Pavano to the rotation. Hell, go ahead and sign Soriano as well. Why not? Wouldn’t cost any extra draft picks!

And, just in case you didn't know, that was a joke.

Obvioulsy we could do without signing Konerko. We’d have Dunn and Luke and they could trade 1B/DH according to who could use the rest.

There is a strong argument I think for going nuts once you decide to sign 1 Type A free agent

since the cost of signing each successive deal declines, you might as well sign a bunch in one year rather than spreading them out.

So true

The year the Yanks signed Texiera, CC, and Burnett, they parted with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round draft picks. There is indeed a benefit in bunching one’s free agent signings.

Brendan Ryan is on the trading block.

So now we have two all-glove (former) Cardinals to choose from.

interesting, though...

ryan is not terrible at the plate and is entering his prime years. look at the cards saber blog “fungoes.” they dig him. to this point, he hasn’t had any single season at the plate as good as the best of bartlett or hardy, but he’s considerably better than izturis at the plate and by a variety of fielding metrics has performed out of his skull in the filed over the last couple years.

couldn’t hurt to ask.

Yeah, he's definitely an option.

No idea how much the Cardinals would want for him, though. He’s arbitration-eligible for the first time, so he’s team-controlled for a few years, but they’re also replacing him with a non-tender pickup, so who knows what they think his value is…

Whoops.

Forgot they got Theriot via trade before he was non-tendered. Still, replacing Ryan with Theriot suggests they aren’t crazy about the former, despite his glove.

That’s why Qatar got a UFC event and will get another one. Write a big enough check, you get what you want.

Have fun with practicing in 110+ degree heat, FIFA teams. Sure, the game fields will be covered and have AC, but I seriously doubt all the practice facilities for 32 teams will be.

I'm not sure about that,

while there is no official rotation policy anymore, Qatar is still a AFC country. by 2026 CONCACAF will be the confederation with the longest world cup drought. One advantage the US has is that bidding is relatively cheap for us since the infrastructure plans are pretty minimal. China is definitely looming, but I can see us being the favorite for 2026.

…he’s obviously not a guy you build around. But you add his pop in a key spot in the lineup and he could do some good things around the yard. Add another free agent (Big Donkey! The key is him being cheap though. Then you have flexibility if he starts acting the fool.

but i’d take him. He kinda sucked with the Chisox after the trade (in 24 games), but in the 66 games he played with LA, he had an OPS+ of 151. That’s higher than Luke had last year. His combined OPS+ last season was 138. For comparison, Nick was at 119. Do I want to add a relatively cheap player that instantly becomes one of our biggest offensive threats? Yea, I think I do.

K-Law on Konerko
Donny (Toronto)

Hi Keith, Why would the Orioles be going after veterans such as Konerko. He is a good player but lets be honest Baltimore has no chance of the playoffs with or without him. They have a decent core but in that division fighting to maybe finish 4th makes no sense to me.

Klaw (1:04 PM): And at his age the cliff is near enough that a team like Baltimore shouldn’t want to shoulder that risk.

Did anybody see how Zimmerman was throwing this year? He totally changed his arm angle and it really looked shitty. It looked like he had a shoulder injury and was trying to baby it or something..

The joke is

that Zimmerman didn’t win the gold glove because of Adam Dunn’s recieving leading to more Zimm errors.

i saw that

my initial reaction was what would have “good” 1B done. Are those three errors fairly typical? Or would have a decent fielding 1B caught those errors? And I don’t know the answer to my questions. Just asking.

Your mother.

Yeah thats hard to know

but even if an average 1B had caught all three of those throws would he have won the gold glove? Seems unlikely.

no

but i’m just wondering if Dunn has a tendency to boot routine balls.

Well but if they are routine wouldn't he get the error rather thant he thrower?

Obviously scorers don’t get every assignment right, but usually if a 1B misses a routine throw he gets the error.

what difference does it make anyway?

here’s what we know: Adam Dunn is bad at defense at first. He’s not as bad as he is in the outfield, but he’s still bad. But it’s still just first base.

the numbers say

he was slightly below average. The scouts say he was worse than the numbers say he was. And in reality, one season is not nearly enough data to make a judgment on.

the comments from the article

echo what I’ve heard other people say. Good range but his glove work is horrible. I can easily see him putting up horrible UZR numbers in the future, which will make him a 1 or 2 win player. There’s no way I do $60M, 4 years for him. I would nervously offer him $48M, 3 years at most.

by birdman on Dec 2, 2010 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

I knew he was right around average, but thought it was above.

So if it’s not definitive enough to make a judgment on how can you say this?

Similar to below, why do the 194 games he played at 1B before his first full season as a first baseman matter more than the 153 games he played there this year?

by O'sFan21 on Dec 2, 2010 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

more data is better

but 194 games isn’t big sample either. nobody making definitive statements here. we’re just going by what we have available.

Your mother.

by birdman on Dec 2, 2010 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

More data is better when it's apples to apples.

His 1B experience prior to 2009 really tells us nothing about his current abilities there. He played exactly 2 games at 1B from 2005 to 2007. Does how he played there in a part time role more than 5 years ago really tell us anything about how he is currently playing or will play in the future now that it’s his full time position?

I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8

by O'sFan21 on Dec 2, 2010 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

i'm not sure, man

It’s up to you on how you want to interpret the data.

Your mother.

by birdman on Dec 2, 2010 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

How can you reasonably say that these tell us anything??

-44 games in 2002
-19 games in 2003 (only 7 starts)
-10 games in 2004
-33 games in 2005
-2 games in 2006
-zero games in 2007
-19 games in 2008

I just don’t see how judging him based on playing the position once every 3 weeks is at all meaningful.

I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8

by O'sFan21 on Dec 2, 2010 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

man, you're really going to browbeat me until i agree with your position.

Look, there’s both quantitative AND qualitative here. Both sources of data do not paint a favorable position. The quantitative data are not large enough to make reliable conclusions but it corroborates the qualitative data. I’m comfortable with saying Dunn isn’t a good 1B. At BEST, he’s average, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s terrible the next few years.

Your mother.

by birdman on Dec 2, 2010 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

That's fine.

I think if anything there’s reason to think he’ll get better since this is his first time playing the position full time and he’s already showed improvement, but I’m sure most would disagree with me on that.

My only beef is with people making assessments based on minimal games played 6-7 years ago in a part time role. That seems akin to colleges using small sections of PSAT scores rather than full SAT scores for admission – they are no longer a reflection of anything other than past performance in very small sample sizes.

you can weight the importance you place on certain types of data

If we have two data points,

Eh

I would argue that this years data point puts him in the noise range of average and much of the data prior to 2009 is meaningless (since he barely ever played there). So to say that he’s bad based on it doesn’t make much sense to me. I’m not trying to say he’s good or above average, I’m just saying the data isn’t strong enough to say that he’s bad.

I don't agree with that.

I specifically don’t think it’s strong enough to say that he’s bad. I think it’s very difficult to say he’s anything other than within the noise range of average. I don’t think average is bad. It’s average.

That’s despite a mediocre .261/.323/.405 batting line against him, interestingly enough. B-Rob (1.000) and Dr. Jones (1.100) have great OPSs against him in tiny sample sizes. He played a part in Birdland Day: 0.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER.

Hi there, and welcome to Pac-10 2-Nite. This Thursday's Special Story: Zona Gonna Scum Debbil Yo Mama

I’ll put up the whole sked tomorrow. For the mo’:

ASU @ Zona (-5 ½ ): If Foles could throw for 448 at Orygun in a cold rain, whaddaya think he can put against the Scum Devils in the warm, thin desert air? Sure, I was as impressed as anybody by Osweiler’s step-up job for a bell-rung Threet against UCLA, but this Big Game may be too tall an order even for a 6’ 8" QB – he’s starting his first game, all right? I’ll take Zona @ 5 ½, thanks.

Faaaaaaccccckkkkkkkkk: Debbils 30-29 (2 OT). Thx for ruining my breakfast.

The reason NCAAF is hard to bet is that even when games follow script, you can still lose easily enough, often enough.
Foles beats Osweiler, but his team miss two PATs — one for OT, one for ball game — and that’s that. Zona shoulda won this by 7 in the 3rd OT, but they didn’t, dammit, and I put the blame squarely where it belongs: Obama is a socialist.
