Beltre
I get the feeling we could offer $100M/2 years and he wouldn’t take it to play for the O’s.

You're right - it'd take a Nats contract to get Beltre here
I dunno how I feel about that. I really don’t buy into the “only can play well in contract years” narrative that he has worked up in the media – I think he’d be great for us.
I just can’t see us dropping an offer higher than the 5/70 that was already on the table from a team he’d be more likely to go to, which was summarily turned down. Certainly not MORE years, considering the age factor.
Not directing this at you, but
why is everyone ok with signing Beltre and moving Reynolds to 1B, but the thought of signing LaRoche makes everyone want to vomit? Aside from one steroid standout year, Beltre and LaRoche have put up very similar numbers over the years.
LaRoche career .271 .339 .488
Beltre career .275 .328 .462
both players are capable of 20-25 HR and 80-100 RBI. Plus, at least LaRoche doesn’t shit on Baltimore every single chance he’s given.
Scott Boras client
Boras reportedly wants 90 mil. He turns into Luke Scott outside of contract years (.250/25/90). I’m not gonna waste anymore typing on how wrong he would be for us.

That's IT
I’m tired of hearing about Beltre and contract years because it just isn’t true. Let it be known: Adrian Beltre is good at baseball and “contract years” do not influence him.

So, what do we see? I chose the years before he moved to a new team with a new contract, i.e. his contract years. With just three years to choose from, it’s a small sample size. In two of teh three, he did well, singificantly better than his 13-year career average of .275/.328/.462/.791/108. His career averages show a pretty good 3B bat with decent pop, but in two of teh three years where his contract was expiring, he exceeded even his normal good numbers.
My verdict? Adrian Beltre is a good player who gets better two out of three times when more money can be had the following off-season.

heh
my real point is to look at his road splits from his time in Seattle. Beltre was totally punished by playing half his games in Safeco (and then getting hurt in 2009)
road numbers by year
’05: .248/.295/.440
’06: .283/.343/.462
’07: .285/.317/.533
’08: .292/.349/.512
I have a feeling his truly bad 2005 after his truly great 2006 is the entire basis for the contract year business.
(You mean guys have career years followed up by really bad years? Sounds like a good reason to shop Luke Scott to me…)
"This is a time when if we weren’t cynical we’d shoot ourselves."
If your one truly bad year is at Safeco
I’ll agree, getting out will help. But his other two contract years show a definite uptick. And even then, other pactors come into play. Last year, I can see discounting the contract year theory as well, due to the quirky nature of the ballpark at Fenway. If Beltre’s hitting talents are suited to those dimensions, the ballpark, rather the ciontract status, would be a much more reasonable explanation, or at least one source of the higher numbers. But I’m too lazy to look up his home and road splits from last year, because we aren’t going to sign him, anyway.

Spewing negativity.
My only doubt there
is that pulling it off involved a lot of people going along with it for a long time. If it really all is Banksy’s creation (with a big assist from Shepard Fairey), it involved a stunning amount of planning.
not sure what you mean
it would take a secret understanding between banksy and mr. brainwash… the hoax doesn’t require those in the production of mr. brainwash’s art to know about the hoax.

What do you guys think of Kila Ka’aihue?
He’s young (26), had some impressive minor league numbers in Omaha, was a bit of a downer when he got called up to the Royals, is totally blocked by Billy Butler, and Dayton Moore is a bit of an idiot.
He probably could be had for a song.
Actually i think teams have checked with the Royals in the past

True....
But the Royals won’t have any place to play him…..Butler is super popular in KC, and Hosmer is more likely to be their 1B of the future than the Kila Monster is….
The one thing MacPhail seems to be good at is putting together lopsided trades…I’m thinking the Royals could be soon lowering their price.
Its a good thought, and there are other similarly blocked prospects we should be going after
My only point was that in the past, the Royals have been surprisingly reluctant to part with Ka’aihue.
I love Kila

But Trumbo from the Angels would look real good, too. Since they pulled their offer to Beltre, maybe they would be interested in Josh Bell for 3B. Hell, I would offer them Bell, Tillman and Tatum for Trumbo and Mike Napoli. Napoli is apparently out of favor out there and can catch or play 1B. Sound familiar?

Buster Olney says:
It’s almost Christmas and the Orioles don’t have a first baseman. They have been talking with the representatives for Adam LaRoche about a three-year deal for something in the range of $21 million… The Orioles have also been talking with Derrek Lee, for a deal somewhere in the range of $8 million.
Can we please go with the barely-more-expensive, with-upside, one-year deal? Please?

I'm still, ya know, waiting to hear about what other team is in on LaRoche
that’s making us start the negotiations at 3 years, heh.. When you put a 3 year LaRoche deal up against a similarly valued 1 year Lee deal, yeah, that’s seemingly not a difficult decision, assuming you’re going to go with one or the other option either way.
let's remember...
the only source for the 3 yr deal the O’s offered to LaRoche is Jenn Royle. I think it’s probably safe to assume the O’s never offered a 3 yr deal.
I’m guessing the reason he hasn’t signed is that he is waiting for us to actually offer 3 years.

"This club is not a good club." --Jim Palmer
Look at last years negotiations
LaRoche turned down a multi year offer from the Giants that was reported to be 2/$18M but was apparently club option heavy, and took a $6M single year with a $7.5M option that the DBs declined and paid the $1.5M buyout.
I think the O’s have more cash available than the DBs do, and that something like 2/15-18 is a reasonable offer for LaRoche. He’s a good 1B, but he’s not great. Given that, 3/21, assuming it’s true, would be something that the O’s could afford to cut bait on if something better comes along, or be used as trade bait, assuming LaRoche doesn’t decline significantly. Not saying it’s the best option, but it’s better than our current in house options.

Meh, it doesn't hurt my feelings...
Of course if the options are to play for the Orioles or to play for a team that’s going to contend next year… all else being equal, you would expect most players to choose the latter. When it comes to a point where all things aren’t equal, and it’s in their best interest to play for us, then they will. These guys are all professionals… and most of them realize that if they want to continue being paid millions of dollars, they better put their best out there every night, no matter what jersey they end up wearing.
There aren’t that many teams sans 1Bmen at this time, and there are at least 5 options left for us on the table (LaRoche, Lee, Thome, Guerrerro, do nothing). One of them is bound to end up happening, and if it’s one of those 4 guys, (the latter 2 DHing, obviously) and they have to be brought to the signing table kicking and screaming, I am sure that they will still put up just as good numbers as if their lifelong dream was to play for the Orioles.
"Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly; Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?' Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land; Man got to tell himself he understand.."
it's not about hurt feelings
I don’t give a crap about hurt feelings. It’s about performance.
These guys are all professionals… and most of them realize that if they want to continue being paid millions of dollars, they better put their best out there every night, no matter what jersey they end up wearing.
..and there’s where you and I disagree. While techinically these guys are all professionals, in that “they are paid to play baseball”, the notion that ‘they all put their best out there every night’ is laughable.
See Ramirez, Manny. Or ROcker, John. Or according to most commentators, Greinke, Zack last season. And a host of others.
I’m not asking someone to proclaim a newfound love for Charm City. But if you really don’t want to play there, then I don’t want you on the team. The notion that guys will somehow “rise above” their dislike for a city because they’re being paid just doesn’t hold water.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
I agree
I think there are some guys who don’t care where they are, who are genuinely apathetic about the team colors and the city and can still put out nice quotes and play good ball…but I don’t think there are guys who can go somewhere they hate and still perform well.

OT: I am really, really, really sick of the rain.
It has been raining here since Friday afternoon. Pretty much nonstop. Occasionally it will let up for an hour or so, but it makes up for it by mostly being a hard rain.
The yard is saturated. I feel like I’m in Ray Bradbury’s short story about the two guys who crash land on Venus.

It's been colder than the average for this part of the country.
Probably nothing compared to Rochester, but I went my whole life with a much longer fall than the one we got this year. We got like two days were it was 50 degrees and it’s been freezing ever since.

December is usually not this cold.
Usually it’s like mid to upper 40s for most of the month and doesn’t get really cold until January and February. But it was much colder last winter too so maybe this is the new trend.

I’ve only been so Southern California once but I do remember that it was much drier than I’m used to. When I was in Las Vegas a few years ago my skin got so dry it cracked and bled. I live both places.
Main home in PDX, but my job is in Seattle.
After being out here over 20 years, 65 – 75 is like the perfect temp range. Anything over 75 starts feeling like Phoenix in the summer. But the fact is that it gets into the 90’s every summer in both PDX and SEA, but just for a couple of weeks or so.
On the flip side, we can usually enjoy all of the good things about winter without much of the hassles, like shoveling driveways, scraping ice off windows, snow clogged traffic, etc. Out here you drive to winter (i.e. the mountains). And never pay attention to the weather in the city. It can be raining and misaerable in Portland, yet you can be skiing up on Mt Hood in sunshine.

Not so much really. I’m a compensation consultant – I know exactly what private sector companies are doing and when they’re doing it. Pay freezes in the private sector are basically non-existent right now and were only even semi-common in late 2008 and early 2009. They shed jobs rather than freeze pay. The government has done both. The government also pays substantially lower salaries on average than the private sector.

My experience having to interact with government employees ..
.. has shown me that they general fit the same template as private business. You have a portion of people who are extremely talented and good at what they do. You have the big middle group that work hard and are competent and you have the bottom portion who are lazy, incompetent, stupid or retired in place.
Government may have a slightly greater proportion of the latter group, but I chalk that up to the aforementioned difficulty in terminating someone from a government position.

My concern with government isn't that it is overpaid.
I just don’t like having every aspect of my life requiring some sort of oversight or permission.
And a corallary to that is higher cost. Not because you pay more for a gov employee, but that that you are adding more employees to the process. That is one of the biggest issues I have with the Health care bill. It creates hundreds of boards, committees and commissions, all requiring to be staffed and all which will require employers to fill out more forms and provide more information so that these government entities can make “informed” decisions. That’s going to improve health care? They would be better off taking all that money and just directly subsidizing anyone under a certain income level. If those folks decide to spend the money on something else, then they can croak outside the hospital when something happens to them.

Eh over-regulation or bloated regulatory bodies just isn't something I'm worried about.
I worry much more about the mine operators who don’t give a shit about safety and so they won’t pay any attention to it were it not for a government regulator looking over their shoulder or the bankers who will happily play roulette with their client’s money if the regulators aren’t watching then I care about a government agency getting bigger. That idea just doesn’t worry me – I don’t see any big massive downside.

As for bankers, there already was a ton of regulation. Lot of good it did. And even if regulation is working well, people will always be able to stay a step or two ahead of regulation. Perhaps a better solution is not to keep trying to regulate, but to up the penalty for getting caught. I just used it as an easy example.

We had our pay frozen for this year, had layoffs and were told to expect ...
… no raises and probably no bonus next year. A dip in the economy tends to hit a utility company later than a lot of businesses, but the meters not turning eventually shows up in our revenues. Thankfully a somewhat hot summer and a cold winter have improved things. May not get a raise again this year, but our annual bonus looks like it may happen.
Now for some more storm duty. It’s the only time I get OT pay. Of course spending 40+ hours straight on storm duty as a damage assessor wears you down pretty quickly.

apparently in my field,
my company is doing better than average, yet no raises in three years and no bonuses either. I this probably has to do with my boss being an asshole.
The problem with federal wages
is really in the general schedule, with the various fixed levels based on degree and experience rather than field. Some federal employees are underpaid compared to the private sector. I graduated in ‘09 with a Chem. Eng. degree and had to wait six months to find a job; in a strong economy, I probably would be in the private sector making $20k more per year and have had a job waiting for me upon graduation. (I’m not really complaining, since many others are far worse off; just pointing out a fact.)
At the same time, there are plenty of overpaid feds in HR and other areas. So the federal unions are able to legimately talk about underpaid engineers and scientists, and then raise pay for everybody rather than just those with the rare and valuable skills.

"I looked at the clock... because I was saying to myself... It's five to seven, where could he be going with that sawed off shotgun?"
Sure,
but it does make a difference when salaries are being paid by taxes rather than by sales of goods or services, right?
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
What difference does it make, exactly?
when government workers both pay taxes and pay for goods and services, right? And when massive amounts of tax money goes towards propping up the private sector?
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
I don't want to get into one of those things again,
but (1) competition and flexibility give the private sector a good chance at everything balancing out in the long run, while the public sector can’t really work the same way as it’s structured now; (2) tax money propping up the private sector is bad, bad stuff.
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
I don't follow.
I’m not sure if those are answers to what difference does it make or responses to my other two questions, but I don’t get it at an overall level either. That somehow the competition and flexibility of the private sector mean that government workers should be paid less for the same work?
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Okay, maybe this will help:
(1) The only reason I see for government workers to get less base pay is because of job security and benefits. Those are tangible, benefits especially. You don’t want to drive people away from working for the Fed, but under the current pay structure, you encourage people who work in non-productive areas like HR and EEO to move to the Fed and those in productive areas like science, engineering, and people skills (which could translate to sales) to leave it.
(2) The private sector pays people as much as it thinks they are worth. Obviously, there are lots of exceptions, but the private sector doesn’t pay anyone more than it can afford to (except, see #3). If a handful of companies overpay a few secretaries, it probably doesn’t matter to anyone else. If a lot of companies overpay several, then secretarial pay is unstable, and will have to adjust to a more stable point — either those companies cut their secretarial pay because they can’t afford it anymore (their competitors can charge less for services and get more business) or other companies also increase their secretarial pay (these other companies can’t keep their best secretaries employed).
(3) That said, when the private sector gets government subsidies, it messes up the whole system. I hate it, and I didn’t like it before the big bailouts, either. I think those are just what got a lot of moderates to notice the problem.
Feel free to rip me apart, but let’s keep it cool, okay? I’m not some GOP talking point machine, I don’t watch FOX, etc. — but that seems to be the assumption whenever I say anything.
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
but under the current pay structure, you encourage people who work in non-productive areas like HR and EEO
Are you saying these people are encouraged to work for the fed because of the salary? Because they make a lot more in the private sector, so that’s really not the case. If, instead, you’re saying that people who work in those areas are somehow more inherently attracted to the stability over pay compromise that the government offers and so attracted because of that I’m not sure I have any knowledge of that. I just have knowledge of whether people that work in support functions tend to be more attracted to stability over pay than operations folks.
As far as your number 2 I think you are assuming that the overpaid secretaries are the exception in the private sector and the rule in the public sector when neither is at all true.
Very few decisions about pay revolve around what a company can afford to pay – the private sector pays what is required to attract the kind of people they want to attract, which is based on what their competition if paying for that talent. I’ve never once heard a private sector director of compensation or head of HR or CFO or CEO say we can’t hire that person because we can’t afford it or we can’t target our pay at that percentile because we can’t afford it. That’s a more common discussion for non-profit organization although increasingly less common. This competitive approach to pay is one of the primary drivers for private sector pay being higher than public sector compensation.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
HR types make more in the private sector?
Do you have any figures for that? I really find that surprising.
I’ll respond to more (maybe later, I’m about to leave work), but everything seems to hinge on whether or not low-skill-but-credentialed people make more in the private or public sector.
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
Of course I have figures for it!
That’s all I do all day is compare an organization’s salaries to a bunch of other organization’s salaries.
As far as the low-skill-but-credentialed argument that’s a much harder thing to measure. All I know is in the compensation business it’s very common knowledge that all things being equal (location, function, technical expertise, etc) the private sectors pays a good bit more than the government.

I guess you can't share anything, since it's for work.
But looking at the GS, it seems like a person with a generic BA doing paper-pusher work is often going to be able to get a GS-12 (~$75k) position after 3 years. Which seems very unlikely in the private sector. Am I missing something?
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
What's paper pusher work?
If you tell me some specific jobs I can quote some semi-specific numbers, but depending on the job and the sector 75k 3 years out of school would not be unreasonable in areas like finance, consulting, or sales/marketing,
The other thing you have to remember is that while those may be the general guidelines the government (like everybody else) has gotten a lot more selective in hiring, so lots of things that used to require a BA now in principle require a masters.

Entry-level HR/EEO, followed by after 3 years, then?
I mean, maybe I’m just over-inferring from the GS that these people would actually get promoted relatively quickly, but…
I’ll admit that I tend to underestimate how much sales/marketing types can end up making, but my hunch would be that for every well-off person of those types in the private sector, there are two or three making little enough to bring the average down — but in the public sector, their wages are standardized.
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
This is a very generic example
and includes tons of things that don’t make it a great comparison, but in one of the databases I have access to I just took an lower level HR Generalist and ran a report for government organizations and then one for all manufacturing organizations. The average base salary for government came out at about 42k and the average salary for manufacturing came out to 60k. To be fair there’s probably a fair amount of state and local government data in there and I’m guessing that you’re mostly talking about federal government salaries, but that’s certainly not the only explanation for the gap.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Fair enough.
It’s rather frustrating, how difficult it is to find concrete information about this stuff… as evidenced by the fact that there are people whose job it is to do so! Makes it a lot harder to formulate an informed opinion.

(1) competition and flexibility give the private sector a good chance at everything balancing out in the long run,
Give me a fucking break. Go tell that to Tucker or John Delorean or anybody who’s tried to get into the auto business in this country for the last 60 years. Go tell that to Jack Welch from GE who said (I’m paraphrasing) “If you’re not in the top 3 companies in any business. There’s no reason to be in that business.” Go tell that to the Health Insurance companies who hold virtual monopolies in however many states. Or to people who pay BGE bills every month. That’s the “private sector” AKA an oligarchy.
(2) tax money propping up the private sector is bad, bad stuff.
Scores of major industries in the private sector are propped up by tax money in one form or another. They don’t pay those lobbyists for nothing. Again…an oligarchy.
I don't really disagree with you here.

Careful there.
You can rip anyone you want, but when you start to rip on your utility company, you are heading off into left field.
I don’t work for BG&E and never did. But It is a regulated utility and like the majority of utilities, is probably earning at a rate of return below what is currently allowed by whatever commission it reports to.
Meanwhile they have to deal with more expensive power because of the dumbasses who really think you can get something for nothing and thus call for a switch to “renewable” energy or who raise such a stink (and lawsuits) to prevent a transmission line from getting built or simply go nuts when you want to trim or remove trees so they don’t take out your lines.
It’s too bad the utility company can’t just secure power, secure gas, when customers start to bitch. Then we would see how fast people start appreciating the folks who keep the lights on and the fires burning.

Fortunately for me...
…they are not my utility anymore. However BGE was rated as having the highest rates in the United States when I was living back in Baltimore for a year and half – and this was the result of a disastrous deregulation the State of Maryland was part and parcel to. Ask anyone who pays a BGE bill how bad they’re getting fucked over. I pay ConEd, New York City rates and had been for a decade when I moved back to Baltimore and my jaw nearly hit the floor when I say my utility bill from BGE. They have a CEO at Constellation who had no experience whatsoever in the energy business but apparently has the Midas touch when it comes to “government relations”. So once again, we’re talking about an oligarchy.
What’s this bit?
It’s too bad the utility company can’t just secure power, secure gas, when customers start to bitch. Then we would see how fast people start appreciating the folks who keep the lights on and the fires burning.
Does “secure power” meaning shutting peoples’ power off? And are you suggesting your regulated monopoly be allowed to do so because some of your customers might express different opinions than what you approve of? If so, maybe you should look into joining the Chinese Communist Party or GazProm in Russia. I hear that’s standard practice over there.
That last part comes from my time on a sub.
The machinest mates always liked to threaten us torpedomen with securing air and water to our systems.
Can’t shoot a torpedo without them. Well, you can shoot a Mk 37 without air. It’s electric and designed to swim out of the tube. A lot quieter that way. But you still need to flood the tube. Guess the MM’s felt under appreciated.
Utility companies usually try everything they can to keep from turning off the power. It can be frustrating though when you have to deal with people who complain about stuff, yet are also the ones that help put themselves in whatever situation their are complaining about.

I was the only person at the plant filling an engineering position who didn’t have an engineering degree. You need to be technically proficient in a number of areas and it tends to be very systems oriented.)

Maintenance Engineering was responsible for providing engineering support to the Maintenance department.
Maintenance department was responsible for all equipment and components in the plant.
My specific task was to keep track of component failures, conduct failure investigations and report to a national data base the results. I also would provide support to various departments through data searches of siad data base, as well as identify other utilities who made use of the same components. For example, by finding a Calif utility that used the same model Steam Generator pressure relief valve as our plant and had a spare in stock they would send us, I helped shave 3 – 6 weeks on an outage extension. When you are buying replacement power on the spot market at $1,000,000 a day, the savings add up quickly.

The general thought of ChemEs
is that we often take harder versions of courses that MechEs take (e.g., thermo, fluid mechanics, heat transfer) and additional nasty courses that you guys don’t have to. (Do you need to do mass transfer? Even if not, Kinetics, PChem, etc.) One of my ChemE classmates had a same-year MechE roommate, so she was able to compare directly, and the generalization held true.
That said, all engineering coursework is pretty nasty.

It's not incompetence really...
…it’s just that there’s no real personal motivation to idealism, which is the ultimate policy platform of the Democratic party. Politicians are nearly all ambitious careerists and many are very corrupt in both parties. So it’s always going to be easy to pick off 4 or 5 Democratic Senators and gum up the works. Plus with the entire rules apparatus in the Senate, it’s basically set up to not get anything done – you have not only the filibuster, but individual holds that can be put on bills and myriad other parliamentary distractions, all designed to prevent the government from being too effective. If we had an up or down vote in the Senate, America would have an economy similar to Canada or Germany right now.
I'm not disagreeing with any of that.
But I do think it was incompetence among Democratic leadership and membership that kept the tax cut issue from being pushed before the election. I mean, did they honestly believe they were going to have a better chance of getting a good deal in the lame duck session? You never know if that might have saved some seats, if they were hammering on this issue. The rare case where good politics and good policy were in alignment and they punted it. Pretty ridiculous.
That said, I have been surprised that they’ve still managed to pull off getting some stuff done – DADT repeal is, if I might quote the VP, “a big fuckin’ deal”, and getting START through before a new wave of Republican crazies shows up is also a positive move.

And it sucks that the House majority’s already been lost, the Senate majority shrunk and preliminarily looks bleak for 2012 (lots of seats to defend). But I don’t see how someone who’s on the left can be mad with the current Congress for ultimately getting the ball rolling back to the left again. Have so many people forgotten 2002-2006 already? Those were some dark years.

I've also
enjoyed them getting the GOP to vote against so many bills that everybody in the world thinks are good (9/11 first responders health and the anti-child marriage act). Now if they’re just smart enough to campaign on those no votes next time around…

Sure...
…they really did do a lot…by Congressional standards. The problem though is the economy both here and around the world is shifting so quickly right now – and this system is just not set up to handle it.
Plus nobody’s got the cojones to realistically address the debt issue, which is getting out of control. Somebody is going to have to man up at some point though and it’s going to take a host of very difficult political positions to fix the problem.
Yeah... I wonder when the debt will really reach the danger point.
I’m down with deficit spending in a recession to bridge the gap, your basic Keynesian stuff. Of course, we’ve been running deficits even when not in a recession for like 20 years. Those chickens will come home to roost eventually. And when they do, they’ll be shitting everywhere.

Then you’re essentially voting for the worse major party because you’re rebelling against your usual party

My understanding is that
nobody gets a cost-of-living increase, and I’m guessing nobody’s getting step increases, but if you were scheduled to get a grade increase in the normal new-hire progression, you still will. What kind of promotion was she supposed to be in for?

Yeah that's what I thought too
Also he cut the Social Security tax from 6.2% to 4.2% so this year it’ll almost be like we get the cost-of-living anyway.
As far as I’m aware WGIs and promotions are still on the table, although they might be stricter with promotions than they are in other times.

No promotions this cycle.
At least at GAO.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
What is the "cycle?"
We only have promotions once a year anyway, and they’re in June. And like I said they’ll probably be more stringent but as far as I’m aware we’ll still have them (I’m DoD).
We didn’t get our COLA last year , and I got promoted last year, so I haven’t been paying that much attention since I wouldn’t have gotten promoted again already anyway.

Well, the thing is, my mom thought she was going to get a grade increase this year because she's been a grade 14 for years now.
And she was expecting a grade increase…not anymore. And my dad doesn’t have a job, so it would have been nice.
Where are my shoelaces?
Don't take this the wrong way, because I imagine it is very frustrating,
but if you’re bringing in six figures (and solidly so, if she’s been a GS-14 for a while) with only one parent working, you’re doing a lot better than most people right now.

The amount it will save is negligible compared to the amount the government needs to get its act together, but given the conditions of private industry I’m happy to get my paycheck every two weeks.

Right that's the annoying thing.
And also it’s a little offensive given the gigantic tax cuts for the billionaires they just passed. Yeah we’re real concerned about the deficit, so much so that we’re going to freeze pay for all federal employees, but not enough that we’ll go back to normal tax rates for the super rich. Oh and we don’t want to touch anybody’s trust fund that they’ve accumulated while paying historically low tax rates while we’re righting two wars.

Honestly
Given how inept his party has been at message, he might have been doing Federal workers a favor. The whole “Government workers make so much more than their private sector counterparts” bullshit was really starting to resonate in the right wing squawk machine. It’s a good line – particularly to target at the unemployed who are, well, frankly jealous of anybody with a job right now and particularly the government workers they used to look down their noses at 5 years ago. Plus it accomplishes important GOP priorities if it catches on and becomes part of accepted wisdom – like the “liberal media” (Haaa!) and “malpractice lawsuits are the cause of all our healthcare woes”. So with Obama heading this off at the pass, he might have diffused a ticking PR time bomb for the federal work force.

I'll nitpick
why no love for Thome? Big Daddy Vladdy’s “huge bounce-back season” saw him put up a wOBA (which is simply an offensive one-stop stat which assigns different weights to single, double, homer, etc. and divides by Plate Appearances) of .360 in a big hitter’s park, while Thome’s never had a full season that bad in his entire career.
"I looked at the clock... because I was saying to myself... It's five to seven, where could he be going with that sawed off shotgun?"
Also
I would kill for the opportunity to use Jim Thome Voice throughout the season.
"I looked at the clock... because I was saying to myself... It's five to seven, where could he be going with that sawed off shotgun?"
The benefits of Jim Thome go far beyond the playing field.

It's got more to do with the fact that
Vlad’s my favorite player ever, so for him to come here would be a dream come true for me. and TBH, they seem like pretty similar players in terms of cost and what you get every season. we’re not trying to compete yet, I won’t freak out if Thome ends up being better than Vlad this season.

Deadwood is also on my list
I have so many shows on my list, though, it’s tough getting through them.
I hear you on shelf space, though. I already have way too many DVDs, which is why I Netflix it for all but the best. I do have The Wire and Mad Men on DVD. I’m going to eventually get Apple TV or Google TV (whenever it comes out) in hopes that I can own more things digitally so that I can declutter my life of DVDs the same way I did CDs.
You never know when someone is gonna sneak up on ya at the dolphin show! -wrb1990
I love having the physical thing on my shelf
if nothing else it’s decoration in an otherwise bare apartment, so I don’t think I’ll totally get rid of my discs until digital copies force the paradigm shift like mp3s did. It’s the same reason why I don’t own a Kindle or Nook or whatever. I just like having these physical things. But the 7-disc per season deal is just too, too much.
However, I do one day plan to have a secret room behind a bookcase, maybe then I can keep my dvds in there and go wild with it….like a fruit cellar, but far nerdier.

The last place I lived
I shared with a roommate, and other than the bedroom closets which were barely big enough for my clothes, we had one other closet for the both of us, and it was small. We had books CDs and DVDs and anything else you could think of lining every wall surface so I was forced to streamline my possessions. Then about a year and a half ago I moved into a place by myself that has an extra bedroom with two big closets, a huge bedroom closet, and a huge first floor under the stairs closet. I didn’t know what to do with all of my extra space. Of course, now it’s all full. How does that happen?
