Friday Bird Droppings
I apologize for the lateness of today's post, but sometimes a girl has very important things to do in the morning! Also, between it being Ravens-Steelers weekend and the fact that the Orioles haven't done anything other than non-tender Matt Albers, it's a pretty slow O's news day.

Agree on Konerko
With or without Konerko, the Orioles will finish last or next to last in the AL East. As a rebuilding team, we must dedicate ourselves to youth and avoid the drag of expensive long term contracts given to elderly ballplayers. Konerko is a late middle aged ball player. Don’t do it. Either overpay him, or one of the other candidates for 2 years, or play Luke at 1B. Why, oh why, won’t the Orioles do the sensible thing and give Luke a serious shot at 1B. Either that or trade for a young 1B who is blocked.
you make it sound so easy!
we should just trade for a blocked young first basemen! ….like who?
You know that if we play Luke at first (which I support) then we’ll have to find presumably an older player to DH? It’s not really that different from finding an older player to play first.
I could dream it forever and still not do it, but when the time comes for it to be done, God, I want to be ready for it.
Young blocked first basemen
Trumbo in Los Angeles; Kila Ka’aihue in KC; or Alonzo in Cincy all fit that description and actually so does Singleton in Philly although he is still pretty far away.
you forgot about hosmer and belt
I could dream it forever and still not do it, but when the time comes for it to be done, God, I want to be ready for it.
Good point
To me, the best solution to our 1B woes is to attempt to trade for a youngster who is blocked by an established player. In a post of a few days ago, I remarked that I have not done the homework to identify whether any promising minor leaguers fill the bill. I was hoping that one of our better informed readers might identify a candidate.
If such a trade is impractical, then I would turn 1B over to Luke. You are right, we would still need a DH. I am hoping that Nolan Reimold will rebound and fill that role.
My main objection is to giving an older player a pricey 4 year deal when having that player for the first 2 years won’t put us over the hump and into the playoffs. I mentally fast forward to 2013 when we are still at the bottom of our division, although improving, and we can’t afford a game changing free agent because we are still paying Konerko, who by then old and spent, a wasted $14million or so a year.
Yes I loved it
And I’m looking forward to the claymation Christmas special.

I’m sorry but that is absurd. Don’t offer Adam Dunn $8M less than Victor Martinez.
Yeah, the only way this makes sense is 1) Andy saw Victor as a guy who would catch 40-60 game per year, or 2) Andy doesn’t know how evaluate value.

question
Someone in my office made what has to be the worst christmas cookies ever, they are essentially Izturian in their Value Over Replacement Cookie (VORC). Do I:
a. Do nothing (the path of least resistance)
b. Throw the cookies in the garbage so whoever made them can feel like someone likes them
c. Write a note saying that their VORC is terrible, please don’t make these for other people because they will no doubt find them equally shitty
My co-worker also feels like they are terrible, though she is unfamiliar with Cesar Izturis or VORP, or VORC.
Librarians are hiding something
you should write the note, and use VORC but not explain what it is
and if she asks, but very snobby and criticize their outdated, subjective methods of evaluating cookies without ever trying to make your system accessible.
I vote for:
d. science fair method
Take a picture of the still-full cookie box at 4 pm today.
Monday, bring in some Otis Spunkmeyer, take a picture at noon when the cookies are all gone.
Tuesday, bring in some Entenmann’s soft-baked, take a picture at 1 when the cookies are all gone.
Wednesday, bring in some Hydrox, take a picture at 4 when they are mostly gone.
Get some posterboard and crayons. Title your project: “Who Makes Worse Cookies than Hydrox?” In the conclusion section, post co-worker’s smiling photo that you told her you were taking for the office Christmas Cards.
Post your work in the break room…. laugh and point at your co-worker all day long.
Or if you don’t have that much time on your hands, I guess the VORC thing would be ok, too.

Jack Cust is somewhat intriguing.
Now that Dunn is off the board, why not grab him instead of Pena / Konerko / D. Lee, and stick him at DH with Luke at 1B? His OBP is still pretty, even if his power isn’t what it was, and I imagine he’d be a reasonably priced one-year deal. He’d also be moving to a much more homer-friendly park.
Some of the relievers could be good pickups, too — such as the above-mentioned Peralta.

Edwin Encarnacion could hit 25 HR's as an everyday 3B...
And if he comes cheap (~ 1/5.5M), and Josh Bell figures it out in AAA to start the year, it wouldn’t be that hard to kick Edwin to the curb via trade, or bench/spot DH.
Sure, you have to deal with his ~.300 OBP and less than stellar fielding, but if we aren’t going to fill long-term at 3rd, and we still think Bell is the future, it wouldn’t hurt my feelings to stick Encarnacion out there for Opening Day 2011.

Jon Heyman reporting on twitter
saying Mark Reynolds’ “most likely landing spot” is Baltimore and that Chris Tillman’s name “as come up in trade talks”.
I’ll assume those are related thoughts and further assume that the Diamondbacks asked for Chris and the Orioles were all like “And what else would we be getting besides Reynolds then?”
I could dream it forever and still not do it, but when the time comes for it to be done, God, I want to be ready for it.
no way the d'backs are doing that
but a man can dream, can’t he?
I could dream it forever and still not do it, but when the time comes for it to be done, God, I want to be ready for it.
Hm
Mark Reynolds will be 27 next year and is signed through 2012 with a team option for 2013. So if the Orioles got him they could have him for three years at $5M, $7.5M, and $11M. Tillman will be 23 next year and has one year of service time.
Tillman has had very little success at the major league level in 23 career starts (which is nothing), but has had quite a bit of success at AAA. He’s a former highly touted prospect who still has plenty of promise (just not to O’sFan21).
Reynolds has hit 28, 44, and 32 HR in the last three seasons and in his last four seasons has put up an OBP of .349, .320, .349, and .320. He did hit .198 last year which, even though BA is stupid, is pretty horrifying, but his BABIP was over 60 points lower than his career average, so he’ll rebound from that. He has a good walk rate of 11.4% for his career, including 13.9% in 2010. His WAR the last three years has been 1.4, 3.6, 2.4.
I don’t know. What else would they have to throw in?

I don't like trading Tillman for anyone...
If Britton isn’t ready, and one pitcher goes down or the TBD ‘new mentor’ sucks so much that he’s run out of town, then we’ll have Rick Vanden Hurk in the rotation, and I don’t think I can handle a season where we have Rick Vanden Hurk in the rotation.
"Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly; Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?' Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land; Man got to tell himself he understand.."
Sure except
We still have no idea what Tillman might be. It might be nothing, it might be something great. Prospects, especially pitching prospects, flame out all the time, and Tillman has yet to show he’ll be anything. Part of the value in prospects is what you can get for them, and we know what we’ll get in Mark Reynolds, which is a power bat that’s worth at least two wins per year who can hold down third base. And the Orioles need that.
It’s definitely a gamble. And I’m the first to admit that I rarely try and talk about trades because I’m very bad at comparing talent. But I don’t think trading Tillman is necessarily a horrible idea.
You never know when someone is gonna sneak up on ya at the dolphin show! -wrb1990
And I know Tillman isn't technically a prospect anymore, but you all know what I mean.
You never know when someone is gonna sneak up on ya at the dolphin show! -wrb1990
It is because prospects flame out that I don't want to trade him
because our entire rotation is ‘prospects’. What if one of them flames out and it isn’t Tillman. We trade him and we have no plan B. I would like a plan B, especially if Reynolds is no guarantee to be any better than Edwin Encarnacion, who was just non-tendered by the A’s and will cost just as much in salary as Reynolds next year and won’t cost Tillman.
"Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly; Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?' Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land; Man got to tell himself he understand.."
Between Matusz, Arrieta, Bergesen, Tillman, and Britton
I think we will have 3 good to great major league pitchers in 3 years. I just don’t know which 3 they’ll be. And if one of them is Tillman, and he’s on the Diamondbacks, I’m going to be pissed.
"Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly; Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?' Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land; Man got to tell himself he understand.."
yeah, it's a tough question
For me right now it’s:
Matusz >>> Britton > Arrieta > Tillman > 3E1N
I like Reynolds though, and if Bell can get his stuff together Reynolds can move to first. I would prolly do this move, bedgrudgingly.

Britton, who’s never thrown a pitch in the majors>3 who have, albeit with varying success? No. And when Tillman shows he can have some relatively consistent control, he may (may) be >Bergy. Until then he’s either depth or trade bait IMO.

My thumbnail sketches
Matusz – leftie with tons of polish, really put it together in second half
Britton – leftie who gets a lot of k’s and groundballs are 3 really good things (LH, K, GB)
Arrieta – good stuff, some concern about control
Tillman – good stuff, concern about HRs and fly balls
3E1N – i’m not going to have another conversation about this, but I think we can all agree that his ceiling is a back of the rotation starter (I’m pretty sure there is collective agreement on this)
Maybe Britton just hasn’t been exposed like the others, but I’ve ranked them in terms of ceiling, at least from my view.

Tillman isn't a control issue?
How many did he walk in his last couple of starts? And I’m big on Britton. A put-it-in-play lefty? As one who wants to see the whole defense contribute, send him up….but until I see him at this level, he’s odd man out. Hell, Chris consistently produces in AAA. The next step is a huge one. As for Brad, I won’t argue, but with him, it’s about proving something. We’ll see where he is before the break next year.

Any reason to think
that a season with Rick Van den Hurk in the rotation would be any worse than one with Tillman in the rotation?
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Psychologically for me as a fan, yes.
Vanden Hurk has a 0% chance of being a major league starter. He might very well have a solid career as a long reliever, but that is the extent of his potential. Tillman might struggle, but he might not. He has the potential to be a good major league starter, and at least we’ll get the chance to find out. Instead of letting Arizona find out.
"Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly; Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?' Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land; Man got to tell himself he understand.."

I don’t know. From what I’ve seen the Hulk has much more major league ready stuff than Tillman does. I’m sure Tillman’s got something better than what I’ve seen, but I’m just going based on what I’ve seen.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
haha I am still very hopefully about him
I just would like to see some flashed of what the scouts are all raving about. 90 mph flat and straight doesn’t do much for me.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Yep, that straight fastball.
If you’re not going to throw upper 90s, your fastball better have some movement. According to Fangraphs, he throws a cutter. I think he should start using that more, since his fastball is so underwhelming.
I’m worried that his cutter is the reason his fastball has gotten so slow – he learned it last off-season.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Yeah, that makes sense with what I'm looking at on Fangraphs.
The cutter first appears in 2010, and his fastball velocity drops from 92 mph in 2009 to 90.5 mph in 2009. Still, though, 92 isn’t high enough for me to feel comfortable without any movement whatsoever.
A RHP sitting at 92 is pretty decent. That probably means they are hitting 95 pretty regularly and that’s solid for a major league starter – aren’t a ton of guys regularly hitting 95 as starters. Sitting 92 I’d be pretty comfortable with if he had great control or great movement, but as you said he doesn’t appear to have any movement.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
That's true.
I didn’t really fully think out that 92 would be his average velocity. So getting up to 95 would be pretty good. I don’t think control will be a problem for him. Just the total lack of movement on his pitches.
Reynolds is going to age poorly.
ESPN did an article on him (and his genre of hitter) recently. They’re called “spinners,” which has something to do with their jerky swing motion. Apparently due to their extra reliance on timing and bat speed, as they get into their late 20’s, the power just vanishes while the strikeouts keep on coming. Link below, but is insider only:

If we really think Tillman isn’t going anywhere and can’t contribute on the major league level, we have to remember that just a few short years ago, D-Cab was our workhorse.

Sounds like old players skills.
Well, I’m not sure about the jerky swing motion, but I do know that younger players with old players skills usually rely on timing and bat speed, and as those disappear with time, so do their production.
well, Reynolds is only 27
so he can age poorly all he wants, since he’ll be long gone by then
I could dream it forever and still not do it, but when the time comes for it to be done, God, I want to be ready for it.
But Tillman is like 15
And Reynolds’ decline may have already started.

I can just see him flaming out big time here
I just don’t have a great feeling about this one. maybe I’m wrong, but right now I can’t see it ending well for the O’s.

I'm kinda with you on this one.
But I think I am a trade pessimist. I can’t see anything turning out well.
I’m not totally opposed to trading Tillman. I think there’s a very good chance that he will have more value to us right now as a trade chip than he will ever actually have as a baseball player for the Orioles. We heard how he was supposed to be the ace piece of the Bedard trade but thus far I haven’t seen it. I mean, Matusz and Arrieta got knocked around some but you can see why those guys have been touted. Tillman’s more like, “Well, everybody SAYS he’s supposed to turn out to be good…”

I think i'd be way too gun-shy to actually be a GM
I am very reluctant to even trade players on my fantasy teams.
Same with me.
Most GMs are much braver than us. We have to give them that, even if some of them do a terrible job.
And now I realized it looks like I'm being all passive-aggressive towards MacPhail.
Which was not my intent.
I wanna give props to danielreese05
I don’t know id he mentioned it on here, but he wrote a very touching, well written article on Steve McNair and the number 9. Whether or not you’re a McNair/Titans/Ravens/football fan, it’s a great read.

“Some progress has been made” between the Orioles and Koji Uehara, reports Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun. The club has been keeping in touch with Uehara’s agent and Zrebiec says team officials “feel pretty good” about their ability to re-sign the reliever.
Zrebiec also notes that Baltimore has been in discussions about a number of free agent relievers and have contacted the representatives of Grant Balfour, Jesse Crain, Scott Downs, Brian Fuentes, Matt Guerrier and Kerry Wood. The O’s “have at least one offer out” to one of these pitchers, Zrebiec says.

Balfour and Downs are Type As
as is Soriano. So for the love of Pete don’t sign them.
Also: why is the bullpen a priority, exactly?
I could dream it forever and still not do it, but when the time comes for it to be done, God, I want to be ready for it.
You know I don't know
I was writing these player comments for the hardball times stats forecasts tonight, and I saved the bullpen for last because it’s the most boring, and when I started writing about David Hernandez, Jason Berken, Jim Johnson, Mike Gonzalez, and Koji Uehara and I realized that if they re-sign Koji that’s potential for a pretty good bullpen.
And if they sign another type A reliever I might actually die.

Every year I look at the guys in our bullpen and think it will be a potential strength...or at the very least not a liability
and every year they disappoint…
