Wanna hear a NICE thing about yesterday's SC-UCLA game, the no-post-season Futility Bowl?

The refs got to wear real ref uniforms! Yeah, no pajama bottoms/sweat pants (whose idea was that?), they got the real deal. Made it look like an actual game, too…

He has a 4th year player-option, so I’m guessing the extra 7-8 mil would only come if he stays for a 4th year.

Editor at Baltimore Beatdown - SB Nation Baltimore Ravens Blog

by Zachary Beard on Dec 5, 2010 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

Why would he walk away from cash?

Make the Yankees cut him. If I’m Jeter, even if it hit .220 in Year 3, I’m cashing in Year 4.

Hey look, mister - we serve hard drinks in here for men who want to get drunk fast, and we don't need any characters around to give the joint "atmosphere".

by duck on Dec 5, 2010 11:38 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Hell, he has $3 million guaranteed as a "buyout" from the 4th year even if he declines the option

If Jeter declines the option, the Yankees still have to pay him 3 mill. Sheesh!

So it looks like it’s 3/48, plus the guaranteed buyout money. The 4th year is for 8 million and it increases up to as much as 17 million if he wins certain awards. So every time he wins a GG that he doesn’t deserve over the next three years, he gets a million more dollars in 2014. Talk about having your cake and eating it too.

I really didn’t like the comics. Loved the first episode of the series but I feel as if the writing has been on a downward slope throughout the season. Hopefully the writing shakeup next season will change this. I may be in the minority on this but most of my friends agree.

It would be idiotic to trade for him now. However, first base really is a black hole. And while Fielder is a big boy and his father didn’t age well, I certainly would love to see him sign in Baltimore when he hits free agency next year. Where are the other potential landing spots? Baltimore, Texas, Cubs, Dodgers is what I came up with the other day.

Some tidbits from mlbtraderumors:

-Scott Boras’ asking price for Carlos Pena remains “really high.” The first baseman does have interest in Baltimore.
-Zrebiec hears that Andy MacPhail has made several calls to teams with starting pitching depth. Both he and manager Buck Showalter would feel more comfortable with another veteran arm behind Jeremy Guthrie.
-The Orioles aren’t shopping Nolan Reimold, but they have at least gauged his value around the league. Reimold hit just .207/.282/.328 in 131 plate appearances last season before being demoted to the minors, and Zrebiec notes that they’d be selling low.
-The Orioles are “pretty interested” in Kevin Gregg, and they have an offer out to at least one free agent reliever besides Koji Uehara.
-The team is hoping to meet with the representatives for former Oriole George Sherrill during the winter meetings. “I had a horrendous year. I couldn’t get my mechanics right now matter what I tried,” said Sherrill, who had a 6.69 ERA in 2010. “I’m ready to bounce back and help somebody no matter my role.”

If you were a hotdog would you eat yourself? I know I would.

HardballTalk says O's shouldnt trade for Reynolds

Yes, it’s possible that the 27-year-old might improve his plate discipline and flourish in the cozy confines of Camden Yards, but Baltimore should know better than to make a desperation trade. If the Orioles are going to catch up to the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays – heck, even the Blue Jays – they must do it through the draft and through the cultivation of what looks to be a healthy farm system. Allowing Arizona to pluck a name or two from that system would seem to be a step in the wrong direction.

Yea

and I also saw that he was trailing through out, had his top 2 RBs out (not that he normal has much of a running game, but Addai can def. be trouble in the passing game), and had to force eveything in to try to make something happen with what he had to play with. Wayne is constantly double covered, Garcon drops as many as he catches, Collie is out every week, and Tamme can only do so much to impersonate Clark. He may be declining, but that doesn’t mean he isnt still one of the best, if not the best, qb in the league.

Why sign Beltre?

He’s now on the wrong end of the age divide, which means that he won’t be all that good when we’re a good team.

Fine, Bell needs the year in AAA that he should have had last year. But in that case, what difference does it make who plays third? Are we a winning team in our division with Beltre? No. So save the money, save the draft pick, and move on to the second and third tier of free agent third baseman.

I like Mark Reynolds...

…he’s good at baseball. But he’s just good. Giving up something useful to acquire him doesn’t make any sense either. Edwin Encarnacion is essentially the same player, only a little worse, and he will cost nothing but money.

If you aren’t a five win or more player, I’m not really interested in giving up much for you. We’re in the business of acquiring prospects and draft picks still, not in the business of building a contender. You grow a few five win players, then adding pieces like Reynolds make sense. Until then, we’re better off being the first team to find a way to spend $20 million on the draft than we are trading anyone for less than a young star like Upton or Grienke. And if we spend $20 million on the draft, then all of a sudden we’ll find we have the young players to make a deal for a Grienke.

I got my foot in the door with the clich approach, I wrote letters to several teams, and then the letter to the Orioles got redirected to the desk of Calvin Hill, who was the VP of administrative personnel at the time—Grant Hill’s father, a former Yalie and NFL football player. So, I think the school connection, the sort of horses*** Ivy League connection that you’re supposed to feel guilty about—and I sometimes do—paid off there. So instead of the letter ending up in the trash can somewhere, Calvin ended up reading it and calling me. He brought me in for an interview and I went down there during spring break of my freshman year; instead of going to Cancun with my buddies, I went to Baltimore. I interviewed, Calvin and I had a good talk and I ended up getting the job. I was in Baltimore for the summers of ’92, ’93 and ’94.

Apparently Gonzalez is a red sox
The Red Sox have acquired Adrian Gonzalez and a press conference is scheduled for tomorrow, tweets SI’s Jon Heyman. Boston seems satisfied that the parameters are in place for a new contract though no extension will be announced at this time, Heyman tweets. The Padres will receive Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo, Reymond Fuentes, and a player to be named later in exchange for their star player, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter).

The Red Sox and Gonzalez were given until 2pm EST today to hammer out an extension. When the two parties could not agree to terms, the Red Sox decided against making the trade. However, it appears that they now feel confident that they will be able to get a long-term deal done with the slugger.

sports writers shortened it to Sox (then a generally accepted alternate
spelling of the word: socks).

So if ‘sox’ was an acceptable spelling of ‘socks’, then the singular should be Red Sock. Whatever.

honestly though

unless Gonzo gives the Sox some kind of discount (which would make him kind of dumb), then the extension and the trade are totally separate. The Red Sox gave up their farm system for one year of Gonzalez…which they can do because a) Gonzalez increases the odds of them reaching the playoffs, and b) they still have a bunch of farm system.

Balto Sun article with AM before winter meetings

Fun tidbits:

“We’re going to have to look at all the different positions and try to juice up the offense as much as we can,” he said. “We still have third [base], short, first. I wouldn’t rule out the outfield in different ways. It would have been cleaner to just make a big free-agent signing, but those weren’t in the cards for us, so now we have to respond to them.”

No mention of a mentor? I suppose third, first, short, and shit why not an OF is enough.

On the Koji front, his agent told the Japanese media today that six teams are in on the bidding with the Orioles and St. Louis Cardinals being among that group. MacPhail didn’t completely rule out offering the oft-injured Uehara two guaranteed years, but it certainly is not the club’s preference.

“We’re trying to protect ourselves in the event that he’s not on the field," MacPhail said. "If he’s on the field, we’re happy with his performance. Anything that makes sense for us that stands that scrutiny, we would consider. We wouldn’t rule anything out."
