So how does a quote like Boras's get leaked?
Does Boras just shoot his mouth off to anyone within earshot about how stupid teams are?
Because he wanted it to.

Telling the world that even Scott Boras can be blown away by an offer?

I can see that
I was interpreting it like Boras was ridiculing the Nats, “Boy, those guys sure are stupid. I made sure to accept that offer before someone told them how stupid it is!” But I like your explanation better.
Oh no doubt.
Would the nats really have made an offer that large if he wasn’t a boras client? Probably not. They knew it was going to take a huge offer just because of his agent.

cliff lee doesn’t necessarily need a big offer either, right?

The only way for a Boras client to end up on a team like the O's or the Nationals is a huge contract

Your misinterpreting me.
Werth does not get that much if he wasn’t a boras client. Just like Barry Zito. Boras is an excellent agent and is known for getting massive deals. If Werth was represented by a “lesser” agent then, yea, that nats still would have had to blow away the other teams offers but it’s highley unlikely that they would have started so high. Cliff Lee on the otherhand is an amazing player and is going to get paid. By my logic, though, he would get paid a lot more by being represented by Boras vs some other schmuck.

It's also possible a rival exec or two dropped the knowledge that Boras never called them back.
The twitter post wasn’t specifically sourced to Boras, so it could have just been a couple of other GMs whining, “He never called us back!”

Werth
I am glad that the Os have not made a deal like the one the Nats made for Werth. That deal involves too much time and too much money for a 31 year old player, even a good one like Werth.
I think there was an off-the-field aspect
I recently read an interview with Ryan Zimmerman where he criticized the front office for losing Dunn. splashing out big money like this will increase fan confidence, as well as player confidence. so yeah, you’re overpaying for Werth’s ability on the field, but you’re also increasing attendance, increasing the club’s ability to attract free agents in the future without overpaying, and increasing the chances you can keep the franchise cornerstones like Zimmerman for years to come.
it might not be the right decision, but it’s an understandable one. in the end the Nationals only overpaid by like $10 million over the course of the contract (Fangraphs ran an article about that) so it’s not a franchise killer. I mean the Giants had 2 bad contracts like this (Rowand + Zito) and still won the World Series.
Again with the fangraphs estimates of value
How hard is it to understand that, while nice to contemplate, they are completely meaningless in a market economy. The players’ value is what teams are willing to pay for him, and as has been mentioned dozens of times, the Nationals blew every other offer out of the water, so it seems highly unlikely that the margin was less than 10% as fangraphs indicates.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
I agree
Just look at his home/road splits last year. .838 ops on the road, 1.000 at home. This is like giving Luke Scott that kinda money in my mind. Absolutely insane.

And also
I’m sick of hearing all these teams comparing their shitty contracts or bad decisions to the Giants by saying “Look at all their stupid moves and they won the WS!” The Giants play in a division where you can sneak into the playoffs every year with a record barely above .500 and they got incredibly lucky with scrap heap and castoff pickups. All that being said they have a huge rotation with 3 homegrown studs and some great position player prospects as well. The nats don’t have any of that – they have 2 prospects and a stud 3rd baseman and play in a tough division. Modeling themselves after the Giants in terms of accumulating bad contracts is stupid.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Giants won world series despite Sabean
So I guess that means there is hope for us all!
Librarians are hiding something
There's hope for us, sure...
…except that the Giants play in a crappy division in the NL and we play in the best division in the AL… oh well.

Great quote from KLaw today
from his insiders article:
It’s worth noting that if you as a GM or owner feel that the market is forcing you to “overpay” for a free agent because your team isn’t good, maybe you should improve your team first through the draft…That is, if free agents don’t want to come to your team because your team stinks, the first solution is to make your team better. Signing one premium free agent isn’t the way to do it
I could dream it forever and still not do it, but when the time comes for it to be done, God, I want to be ready for it.
panic move is the perfect description
Werth has been a five win player but the Nats are assuming NO decline and he’ll remain relatively healthly. Absolutely absurd.
Your mother.
Amen to that
And: The only way to improve one’s club for the long haul is to select good players and develop them, which is something that the Os did not do for a over a decade.

there's something a little bit sad and funny about this statement...
“Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets that Monday’s meeting will involve Konerko’s agent and assistant GM Rick Hahn. With the Orioles viewed as the only other serious suitor for Konerko, there’s a “strong feeling” the White Sox will get a deal done as early as this week."

Hell we’ve only had one guy do it since ’05 and 3 total 30 hr seasons in the 2000s (Huff 08, Miggi 04, and Batista 02).

and it goes waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back. The Hideki Irabu trade is still netting them guys. BUH DARD could keep cycling in and out guys for the next 15 years.
I could dream it forever and still not do it, but when the time comes for it to be done, God, I want to be ready for it.
If we resign Flat Breezy and then trade him again, does it still count on the BUH DARD ledger?

Definitely.
We still have Bell, Jones, Tillman, and Steve Johnson (I think that’s it?). Those players could pay dividends for years to come.

Well Reynolds is now on the list too
If Bell puts it together over the next year or so we can always flip Reynolds and acquire even more pieces to keep the lineage going
Reynolds is only half on the list though.
DH was clearly the main piece to this deal. Mickolio was just extra. But it still counts, I guess.

Reynolds has the added advantage of being right handed. He was also born in Pikeville, KY. I think it would be rad if he moved to Pikesville.
So I’m guessing the 3-4-5 will be Markakis, Reynolds, Scott.

I know he might need another year in the minors but you’re also not bringing in Reynolds to be a one year stop gap either I guess.
Reynolds could always be moved over to 1B if Bell gets it together.

bell and britton
pending injuries should play the entire year in AAA. We should deal with that next offseason.
Reynolds isn't a stopgap, but he's not a piece that will block Josh Bell either.
Bell starts the year in AAA and if he puts it together and lives up to his potential, you move Reynolds, possibly to first if he’s capable and we haven’t filled that hole otherwise or to another team for something similar to what we paid for him.

Trading a reliever is almost always a good idea.
5 years of Hernandez versus 3 years of Reynolds? Unless Hernandez becomes a lockdown reliever, this should be a good idea. And I don’t think there are many lockdown relievers in all of baseball.
Librarians are hiding something
This is what i'm leaning towards
There will be more relievers, especially since we draft so many pitchers.

here's my thinking
and I’m still working on it. Like I said, I like to let things percolate a while before I judge.
I’m thinking: Hernandez won’t be worth a lot to the Orioles for sure (and Mickolio is more or less dead wood to me), but we’ve still given up SOMETHING for a third baseman who not only won’t increase the odds of a successful season, but won’t become a part of the core we’re trying to build. In other words, unless you’re picking a key piece, why give up anything?
I could dream it forever and still not do it, but when the time comes for it to be done, God, I want to be ready for it.
alternate view
Reynolds is under team control through 2012 for sure and 2013 if the Orioles want him. Would you say that by 2012 the Orioles shouldn’t have a successful season under their belts?

Now the Orioles, who are already focusing on relievers for some reason, will be more inclined to overpay for another one.
You never know when someone is gonna sneak up on ya at the dolphin show! -wrb1990
I'm not sure that Reynolds can't be a piece going forward
He’s only going to be 27 next season and if he shows some growth I don’t see why he couldn’t be around for a while. He’d likely not be a key piece, but I think its too soon to say he can’t be a solid part of a successful Orioles team in the future.
Well, here's one thing:
the Orioles clearly have demonstrated an inability to land any kind of worthwhile FA the past few seasons up until this point today. We’ve resorted to signing replacement level and below type FAs in order to fill out our 25 man roster rather than have to rush guys to the bigs only to see them flame out or never develop fully.
Prior to this point we’ve also focused on trading away established veterans for pieces and parts that further bolster our MiLB and MLB rosters. Tejada and the Canadian have netted us more than ten players (and counting) that have dramatically altered the short and long-term prognosis for this team.
If you can’t buy ‘em, trade for ’em. Hopefully the "’em" also are already signed to a contract that will not need to be negotiated within the next few years. Additonally, while many people assumed that “buying the bats” involved forking over copious amounts of dough – prospects/players are legal tender in the MLB. Looks like we just bought ourselves a bat, for whatever it’s worth.

More attention on women’s pro and college sports can’t be a bad thing, and content like that is probably always going to get lost on the main ESPN site. If its a dumbed down version normal sports stories, then yeah, but insulted.
I gave it a look
And it does appear to focus more on women’s sports, which is fine. But every single writer on the site is female and a bunch of the columns aren’t about women at all, just written by women. My Twitter buddy Amanda Rykoff is one of the writers and she just wrote a pretty good blog on her first impressions of the winter meetings, but you wouldn’t see it if you’re not on espnW.

i don't like this trade
I don’t mind losing Mickokio, but Hernandez will be a valuable bullpen piece for several seasons. Reynolds’ HR are seductive no doubt. But his OPS+ has been 98 and 96 two out of the last three years. Not surprisingly, his wRC+ (designed to measure a player’s overall offensive contributions) is decidedly average in those years as well (100 and 103, wRC+ park and league weighted like OPS+). His glove isn’t good (-5.9 UZR/150 for his career, again reinforcing my gripe about Andy’s lack of ability to evaluate defense). I don’t mind acquiring a bat for relief help, but get someone fucking good. I’m not saying HRs aren’t important but his overall offensive contributions isn’t impressive at all. Right now, I see Mark Reynolds and see a better version of Tony Fucking Batista.

Tony fucking Batista
Like Reynolds, we acquired Batista for his age 27 season. And like Reynolds, Batista had a history of putting up good numbers (he was a four win player in 1999) by putting up a lot of HRs with a lot of SOs. Batista managed to put one OK season before sucking bad. I see the same type of projection for Reynolds while Hernandez puts in several season of strong relief work. Ugh, fucking Andy MacPhail.
Your mother.
At least Reynolds walks some
I thought of the Batista comparison too, and with guys like that there’s a pretty fine line between the power justifying their other deficiencies and just being terrible. Reynolds’s walks at least give him a little bit of room for error. If Batista hit .198 his OBP would have been about .203; Reynolds managed .320.

Yea. Reynolds BABIP was also way down this year.

DH wants to start
They wanted to hold to Hernandez, but “They feel like it was a deal they had to make.” There are no questions about his power.
Adrian Beltre does not want to play in BAL. Reynolds was the best option out there.
Landing Reynolds make it more likely they keep Izzy because the O’s are more willing to put up with his crappy offensive production.
Angelos gets blame for everything. Andy feels like Petey has been generous in terms of offering money to spend. Andy MacPhail isn’t the type to overpay.
O’s are trying to resign Koji. 1 year and an option is current offer. Kevin Gregg is being pursued. Meeting with Sherrill’s agents this week.

we could convert Reynolds to 1B (his bat/glove play a lot better over there) and then sign Beltre to play 3B!

Yeah...
I was trying to draw a comparison to our acquisitions last year (Atkins as the 3B that moved to first and Miggy as the other FA 3b), but it wasn’t particularly obvious.

Yep....not worth it
The sad thing is, he’s going to get that from somebody even though he’s not remotely worth it.

Interesting, who knows how accurate it is considering the source
but Heyman’s Winter Meetings article has the Orioles as one of the final 4 teams in on Werth
I'm sure we were laying in the weeds.

Sickels has his preliminary O's prospect list up.
Check it out and see if he’s missed anybody, here.

Yeah, I assume so.

Sickels just said he's removing Mickolio (obviously)
and adding Snyder. Which makes it sound like he wasn’t overlooking Snyder but intentionally left him off.
sort of surprised...
eddie gamboa?
how about tyler townsend or kipp schutz?

Eh Schutz was 22 at Short Season A
he’d have to explode this year to probably be worth talking about.
I was going to join and mention Gamboa if he wasn't there.
Saw him in Frederick once, liked him, and he’s been pretty good in the minors, if nothing special.

Wow.
That’s not encouraging. Not that I was still holding out much hope for him.

Haha! He just responded:
Ok, drop Cornholio in favor of Snyder.
"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man." ~ The Dude
I was actually pleasantly surprised
There are some names on there that aren’t bad. It seems like there are the first 2, some B-ish prospects and a slew of C+ prospects. It just seems like a strange distribution.

I love Ozzie and his quotes

Phillies offered Werth 4/63
Still more than Dunn

I wish that someone would teach Buster Olney how to use the Twitter

Like someone (I forget who) once said
I don’t think Twitter and Buster Olney understand each other.
