Winter Meetings Day 3 Overflow
Just checked in and thought that we've gotten up to enough comments in this morning's open thread that it'll start to slow down some people's computers, so feel free to keep things going in here.
UPDATE 10:42 PM: Jeff Zrebiec of The Sun says Koji Uehara is back to the O's on a one-year deal.
Who will the Orioles get to play first base?
Are you pro JJ Hardy?
When will they announce that they signed Koji?
And what of Kevin Gregg? $10M? Ugh!
I will just ask that if you want to talk about Luke Scott, keep it in the first thread. Thanks!

Id rather have Hardy than Bartlett any day.
Im fine with the offer for Gregg. As for 1B..sign….not a ton of options. Lee? Maybe keep Luke there. Ha
I like Hardy
If it’s Jacobson and someone else not that big, go for it. I’m not convinced they’ll sign a 1B because of the players themselves, but Lee is probably the most likely. I hope I wake up to the Koji announcement.
I'm happy with Hardy
Get Hardy, sign Adam Laroche to a two year deal, bring Koji back, and some other experienced relievers, not sure how I feel about Kevin Gregg at 10 mil

Luke Scott may be on the block but I think this Heyman speculating rather than based on an O’s source.

I heard yesterday
That they were listening to offers for
Luke but I don’t think he will be leaving unless they get blown away by an offer.

In summary
Hardy over Bartlett, providing he doesn’t cost too much in talent.
LaRoche seems like the best fit at 1B. He’s not going to provide premium power, so hopefully he’ll be cheaper than Pena. $8M?
Koji please. Incentive laden team option 2nd year.
I wouldn’t have a problem with Kawakami if he came cheap. I’d be just fine sitting pat with our pitching, we’ve got enough depth that I’d rather address the rest of the team, especially in this market.
Why the hell are they going after Ludwick and Willingham, do we need a 6th OF?
"I hear the question, and I'm not going to answer it," Gregg Williams
Willingham would play 1st
Dude can hit. Defense isn’t great but better than Dunn; which is to say, a hungry polar bear in oven mits chasing a field mouse.
He can hit
I hadn’t thought of the 1B angle, missed his 4 innings of MLB experience on the B-R page. Which is more innings than I expect Dunn to get this year.
"I hear the question, and I'm not going to answer it," Gregg Williams
Sign Derrek Lee to a 1yr / $10M deal to play first
Sign Christian Guzman to a 1/$2M deal to play short
Select Brad Emaus in Rule 5 draft
Sign Koji to a 1yr/$4M deal for the bullpen
If healthy, sign Jeff Francis to a 1/$4M deal
I’m not keen on trading any more talent. Much rather use the cash.

Negative. Guzman can NOT play short anymore. His defense was absolutely awful.

well there's Hardy of course
but Guzman is terrible. last season he was worth -0.1 WAR (would have been worse if he played a full season with those numbers) and the season before that, 0.7 WAR. I’d rather just give the job to Andino or resign Izturis (or, actually, have them fight it out in spring training)
What was the return?
Hopefully nothing good or anywhere close to Reimold-esque

2 pitchers
Cesar Ramos and Adam Russell
Now, Harold, he's a friendly guy. He rambles on and on. He'll talk the balls off a rhino-saurus.~Primus, Harold of the Rocks
Ramos:
minor league WHIP around 1.5 and about 4 BB/9 through 6 seasons. He’s no spring chicken.
Russell:
pretty similar BB rate and WHIP, though he Ks guys a little more. He had a pretty bad year in AAA last year as a 27 yo.
Wow…. amazing that the Rays thought they could get Reimold and someone else from us. Who do they think we are???? oh wait, nevermind.
I just hope he'll manage to pass his drug test

Jack Cust signed with the Mariner's
The O’s should have moved Luke to 1B and signed Cust to DH now that good players are off the board.
Spewing negativity.
Is he at peak value?
I’m warming to the idea of a three-team trade where someone gets Scott, Os get pitching some of which is sent to the Twins for Hardy. That’s to say, I don’t think Scott’s going to improve no his 2009 offensive numbers.
I'd love to trade Luke
But I don’t think there is much of a market for him. He’s not that much better than guys who can be had for free (Vlad and Cust before he signed with the Mariners).

Brittany says the Os and Twin were never close on a deal...
this probably means we won’t be looking at a trade where Jacobson is the centerpiece. oh well. Perhaps they’d be interested in a deal centered around Bobby Bundy.
I'm a Cesar apologist to a fault
but the offensive upgrades at 1B are evaporating like acetone in August. Make the Hardy deal.

If the team can’t get Lee, I’d seriously consider having Scott, Fox and Reimold shift between DH and 1B.

in all honesty, the Orioles are probably best off long-term with that situation
I could dream it forever and still not do it, but when the time comes for it to be done, God, I want to be ready for it.
Agree
If we get Lee (probably won’t) it’s really a 1 yr rental based upon age and we get some production and a better record in ‘11. If we don’t, we get a worse record in ’11 but the same level of competition on the farm (Hughes/Snyder/Mahoney) for a spot on the 25 man for Baltimore or another club in ’12….or ’11 for that matter.

Can someone clue me in?
No doubt that standing at the plate…Izturis was worse than any NL pitcher with a wiffle-ball bat. But can someone clue me in on how JJ Hardy’s OBP is all that significant an improvement that he deserves basically twice the pay?
Defensively, it seems that Izturis held down the position more than adequately, we’d be losing ground on the defensive front (not something we can afford) for only a marginal improvement in offense.
Are we just getting excited about JJ because we’re that desparate for news?
well...
he does, actually, nearly double cesar’s offensive output, and, at this point, is probably a hair better in the field.
i’d still bw curious as to what it would take to get brendan ryan.

Don't get me wrong, I like what I see defensively in JJ
But I guess all I can think of is how we can get more baserunners and reduce our miserable 2010 season of runners LOB.
The both hit lefties like crap. (.205 v .210), and their groundball/fly split and SO and GIDP were about identical. (Shocking actually as I really thought that Cesar seemed to hit into a lot more DPs.
And Hardy’s injuries last year worry me as it seems that we’d HAVE to sign Cesar to back up Hardy as Hardy had nearly 130 fewer ABs than our light hitting SS.
I think JJ is better than you give him credit for...
At least compared to our other two supposed options. Bill James predicts a .331 wOBA for him next year. Izzy and Ryan are slotted for .268 and .288, respectively. That seems pretty significant to me (of course, there are flaws in Bill James’ projections, but that’s the best I can do so yeah)
JJ means more baserunners
Izturis, OPS, career: 64
Hardy, OPS, career: 95
Maybe we can send Izzy out to work with Brady and Moldy?
We still have Andino as the backup, and Turnip is just a Greyhound ticket away, so we really don’t need Izzy, if he’s going to be replacement level and all.
"I hear the question, and I'm not going to answer it," Gregg Williams
Hardy's fielding is improving
I think the offensive difference is much greater than the difference Izzy’s admittedly very good D.

i still wouldn't mind picking up a DH or 1B.
But yeah, pretty happy with how the team would look. Assuming of course that we get Hardy.
I can't feel comfortable untill we have a legit first baseman
I feel like if we don’t sign an accomplished first basemen before its all over, we are selling ourselves short because we still have options to upgrade in lee or Laroche for atleast a year or two
Three possibilities that I've seen.
Josh Horton, SS, Oakland A’s
Justin Sellers, SS, LA Dodgers
Josh Rodriguez, SS/2B, Cleveland
Sellers hit .285/.371/.497 with 14 homeruns last year at AAA. According to scouting reports around the time he was drafted he is also a stellar defensive shortstop. Sounds like a guy I wouldn’t mind taking a shot at.

There are a number of interesting names out there. If the Orioles do trade the pick in a JJ Hardy deal (which I would definitely support), I hope they use the possibility of the second spot. Lord knows there are spaces on the 40 man roster. I’d like Brad Emaus who can serve in the Wigginton role.

Ken Rosenthal just tweeted that an annual salary of 20.2 mil a season makes crawford the highest paid outfield ever, he is good, but i dont know if i can justify that good.

wow, just wow.
So that means the O’s would have had to offer 8 years, $162M to even have a chance at landing Crawford.
Spewing negativity.
Some tidbits about the O's:
-The team did not offer Carlos Pena or Paul Konerko contracts before the first basemen signed in Chicago, according to president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail.
-It’s likely that the team’s shortstop will be Hardy, Jason Bartlett, Brendan Ryan or Cesar Izturis, MacPhail said. The Padres appear to be close to a deal for Bartlett, which would limit the Orioles’ options.
-MacPhail says the club has expressed interest in a number of DH types. Vladimir Guerrero, Hideki Matsui and Jim Thome are believed to be among the team’s targets.
-The team, which selects fourth in tomorrow’s Rule 5 draft, is considering a number of players.
-There are no updates on Kevin Gregg, but Zrebiec reported yesterday that the team has offered the former Blue Jays closer a two-year deal.
-Troy Renck of the Denver Post hears (on Twitter) that Nick Green could end up in Baltimore.

I’d much rather the o’s go out and get Laroche, he will add stability at first like we need, trade for hardy, and add another bullpen arm, and i ll be more than happy
If this is for real, MacPhail would be brilliant
Dan Connolly’s reporting the Os and Twins could trade Brett Jacobson and Jim Hoey for J.J. Hardy and Brendan Harris?! Seriously? Get that done, Andy!

I would cease be angry at MacPhail for not dealing Huff 13 months before he did. I am a pretty bitter person though.

JJ Hardy for Hoey and Jacobsen? WTF?
To make matters so much better, Hardy likely projects as a Type A FA, so worst case scenario is that the Orioles pick up a #1 pick in 2012. (or a sandwich pick in the event that he is downgraded to a Type B.)

then we just gotta add Lee and keep Luke at 1b or Vlad and teach Luke up some 1b!
The O's Infield hit what, 33 HRs last year
Now its reasonable that the infield cant hit:
MR- ~40, JJ- ~25, B-rob- ~10 and if we sign Lee- ~20 more or ~30 even if we start Luke there
Im pretty sure ~100 > 33 HRs : ) MacPhail has finally brought some power to the O’s

Have you been reading the “Confederate Money” comments? A lot of players aren’t going to sign with our Os. If Hardy, Harris, and Reynolds can get the Os to or over the .500 mark, then the players will sign. Next year.
