Jon Miller selected as Frick Award winner - baltimoresun.com
Jon Miller has been selected as this year's Ford C. Frick Award and will be honored in Cooperstown during the Hall of Fame inductions. They couldn't have picked a better guy and I'm tempted to go up to Cooperstown to hear his speech in person. -Stacey

Finally (this is zknower talkin' here), we're gonna try a new Bird Droppings feature today, This Date in Camden Chat History.

Everyone can benefit from a little perspective, as I discovered yesterday when I uncovered this hysterical two-year-old thread in which we debated the wisdom of signing vs. trading Érik Bédard. It's a total hoot to see who was right (Baltimo, OEutaw), who was wrong (SC, me, JP, among others), and what the vibe of CC was a scant 24 moons in the past.

So as we go forward, we'll try to keep one eye on the past by linking to the best Stories/Fanposts from the current date in past years. It'll be kind of like looking into CC's own personal journal/diary: fun (for sure), enlightening (perhaps), and maybe it'll keep us all honest. Best of all, it will remind us of how terrific the present looks compared to the dark days of, say, 2005.

We'll do our best to mix these in every day, unless there's absolutely nothing interesting to link to. Or we're too busy. Or nobody likes it. So, drumroll please.........

On February 2 in CC history: Ainsworth lands with Dodgers (2006), Jonnypops stars as Roch (2007),  O's sign Esteban Yan and Chris Heintz (2008), SC likes Rich Hill as an Oriole (2009)

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my Open Thread go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.

“JP as Roch” pretty much cemented my feelings about Roch, because at that point his blog was still fairly new, and I was wondering if I was the only one who found it awful and sophomoric. I was relieved to discover I wasn’t.

I didn't think the movie was *that* bad

It just got overhyped way beyond its own good, for what was essentially a typical action movie. I saw it with minimal expectations and thought it was decent.

by punkrawka on Feb 2, 2010 9:55 AM EST up reply actions

I dunno

To me it seemed like something out of the 80s where really obvious and over the top plot and theme choices were still acceptable. Like the father saving the girl’s virginity, her being sold to an Arab (!), the Britney Spearsish character. You just don’t really see many action movies that stupid anymore.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s not a fine piece of art or anything. But Liam Neeson does a good job kicking the shit out of a bunch of guys, there are some good explosions, etc.

liam neeson is old. he’s supposed to be hannibal in the upcoming a team movie and i was all like, “no way! he’s too young!”

Jon Miller Rules!

1. "…Angelos didn’t want Miller because he wasn’t always an Orioles cheerleader in his broadcasts. Many fans still point to that separation as one of most significant lowlights of Angelos’ ownership of the team."

Peter Angelos is a douchebag – so he fired the best announcer in baseball and hired…another douchebag. This isn’t rocket science.

2. That Youtube video is great—and heartbreaking. That should be our announcing team NOW, dammit.

(Oh, and Douchebag 2: Notice how Miller calls that double play? Yes, he actually TELLS THE RADIO AUDIENCE WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE THE CROWD NOISE DOES.)

3. "Angelos said, ‘Andy is doing such a good job I don’t think he needs any help from me. What? What do you mean WHAT THE &%$# HELP COULD I POSSIBLY GIVE BESIDES LEAPING OFF THE WAREHOUSE AND GOING SPLAT ON THE PAVEMENT? Hey, where’s the love, the gratitude?!? I’ve never liked doing this, you know.’"

4. Major NOT a douchebag: Bill Watterson: Maybe the best strip – ever. And not one Calvin coffee mug sold— ever. Class.

5. Groundhog Day is on TV here tonight! Russians love it too (it’s the gf’s favorite movie, in fact), so it often runs on this day in Moscow.

Calvin & Hobbes plus Groundhog Day = good antidotes for Peter Angelos

This just in-- the latest Only in Russia headline: "Russians 'bribe' groundhog to forecast end of winter"

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, February 2 (RIA Novosti)-Residents of the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod were trying to bribe Olesya the Groundhog with vegetables and nuts to induce her to make better weather predictions during a ceremony marking Groundhog Day at the city’s zoo on Tuesday.

The Limpopo zoo decided to support the American tradition and see if spring would come early in Russia with the help of its own weather forecaster, Olesya the Groundhog.

The American tradition states that if on February 2, Phil the Groundhog leaves his burrow where he has been hibernating and sees his shadow, spring is still a long way away, namely six weeks.

“According to her forecasts, we should expect six more weeks of winter, because she did not want to leave her burrow,” a zoo spokeswoman commented on Olesya’s behavior.

She said last year Limpopo workers failed to get a weather forecast from the zoo’s groundhogs as they were still hibernating on Groundhog’s Day.

OFF-TOPIC REDSKINS POST

I’m giving you all first dibs before I go over to Hogs Haven.

I have four season tickets to the Skins, nothing special, just upper level, although we’ll get moved up this year.

I’m looking to save a little money next season and split up my tickets: i.e., I will sell two of the seats at face value to someone. The catch is, I"m doing this to save money, and I’d need to be paid well in advance of the tickets being printed (invoice is due in a month), so you have to be a trusting soul. On the other hand, it’s not like I can hide given my profile here at CC.

You would get the same two seats (Section 449) to all home games (8 regular season plus 2 preseason) at face-value ($64/ticket, $1280 total for 20 tickets). They’d be yours to keep, sell on StubHub, what have you. I will not split up the tickets or the package.

If you’re interested, please email me offline at zknower at earthlink dot net (or use the bottom left link under BIG WIGS). (“BIG WIGS”? When did that happen?). Put something like “Skins” in the subject line so it recognize it in my spam filter.

Thanks, and please don’t turn this into a discussion about the ’Skins. :)

I bet that’s what Athletics Nation does. ‘Course, when you put down “47” or something, you have to be careful: it’s all in how you write it…

BP came out with their PECOTA projections for 2010 final standings. No surprise that they have the Orioles in 4th, but I am a bit surprised they have the O’s winning 80 games. I’d probably take that.

But i have soccer season starting back up soon, so i’m trying to lay off the cream.
I found a bunch of recipes for wasabi mashed potatoes that sound interesting, and obviously adding bacon would only make it better.

I’ll have to try to find some real wasabi though. I love horseradish, but its just not the same.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

SARFATE????????

A week or so ago the Orioles took Dennis Sarfate off their 40 man roster. My understanding was that other teams could claim him at that point, at which point the Orioles could try to arrange some sort of deal with the claiming team. If no one claims him after ten days, he can either accept the assignment to Norfolk or be a free agent. That ten days is about up. What is the status of Sarfate?

by fuddnelson on Feb 2, 2010 4:35 PM EST reply actions

last I heard

The O’s were trying to trade Sarfate before the window closed because he’d indicated he wouldn’t accept a minor league assignment. I don’t know how they would expect to get anything for him since all teams know he’d be a FA in a few days.

Organizing a trade gives you exclusive rights

While Sarfarte’s value is certainly reduced knowing that he will soon be a free agent, there is still value in not having to negotiate with him in an open market (presuming that there are multiple teams interested). The return will likely be negligible, but its not impossible for the Orioles to recieve something in exchange.

Is anyone else

Really bothered by the fact that so-called “experts” are saying Sandra Bullock should win the Oscar for The Blind Side? Hey, experts, this is the same woman who has a Golden Raspberry nomination for All About Steve. So, why don’t you throw a blonde wig on me and teach me how to speak in a Southern accent?

This whole thing is a load of crap. If the Academy gives it to her (even though I don’t think they will—it’s still a possibility), I will lose every ounce of respect I have for them. Honestly, putting Sandra Bullock in the same sentence as Meryl Streep is mind-boggling. Bullock will never, ever be the actress that Streep is.

by DCO'sfan on Feb 2, 2010 5:39 PM EST reply actions

I wasnt a huge fan of Julie and Julia as a movie

but Meryl Streep was brilliant and absolutely nailed Julia Child.

Looking at the nominations, i would put Bullock at best 3rd behind Carey Mulligan and Streep, and thats only because i havent seen Precious or The Last Station

Neither was I

But I suppose I have a bias towards Meryl Streep because she’s my favorite actress…still, I saw The Blind Side and I wasn’t impressed. Gabourey Sidibie was brilliant in Precious, but I haven’t seen An Education or The Last Station, but I’m sure they’re both great. I thought Streep gave a fantastic performance, and she’s long overdue. 16 nominations but 28 years since her last win? WHAT?!

Films are more than scripts and stories

I’m kind of getting annoyed with all this talk on the internet about how Avatar doesn’t deserve to be nominated or win Best Picture. I’m not saying that you’re one of these people, and I certainly think that there are valid and credible arguments towards that end, but damning an entire film because certain elements are weaker than others seems to miss the point. Avatar and District 9 and other films like them put a spin on the familiar hero myth and pump up the spectacle through other means, which in the case of Avatar/D9 is amazingly imaginative and competent special effects and worldbuilding.

I guess I may have less of a problem with pulpy tropes than others, since I’m an unashamed sci-fi fan and have enjoyed everything from Paycheck to Moon, but the writing does not have to carry the weight of a film if the aim is spectacle. There are awards for writing, there are awards for directing, and there are awards for the finished whole, and when the completed film works both because of its strengths and in spite of its flaws (like D9 and Avatar did), then you have something special that deserves to be recognized, be it with a nomination or a statuette or whatever.

Although I guess using my argument above, both Avatar and D9 might be more deserving of a Best Director honor.

by PhilR8 on Feb 2, 2010 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

I am one of those people.

Avatar doesn’t deserve to be nominated or win Best Picture.

I’d be fine if it got a directing nomination, but it shouldn’t even win that. The plot is almost non-existent and where it does exist, it is muddled and/or strains belief. “You’re a total stranger, but heck, let’s bring you into our village and tell you all of our deepest secrets.” The script is LAUGHABLY bad. (Unobtanium? Ooooo, how clever.) The BAD GUYS are practially wearing bad guy hats. There isn’t an ounce of subtletly or grey area anywhere.

Best special effects? Absolutely. Sound editing? Maybe. Song? Sure, why not?

Best picture? Not even close. Not even close.

"I doubt he could reach [second base]...mostly cuz his fucking arm was in Aybar's nuts." – twistedlogic

by zknower on Feb 2, 2010 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

Not non-existant

Not muddled. Just simple. Really simple. Unobtanium was laughably bad, but Cameron always has a bunch of clunkers in his scripts (Chris Elliot’s character in The Abyss is a great example of terribly written character with awful lines). Not that I’m going to convince you otherwise or am even trying to, but I’m just saying that the writing isn’t everything, and Avatar works with a very simple and very familiar plot.

Which is exactly why I’m worried about Avatar 2, because the bar has been raised and we’ve already been blown away by Pandora, and a simple (shitty) story won’t work the second time around. Move on to something else, James.

by PhilR8 on Feb 2, 2010 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

i won't convince you otherwise either, but
but Cameron always has a bunch of clunkers in his scripts

this is not an inspiring defense: “Oh, he always sucks at that, so it’s okay.”

"I doubt he could reach [second base]...mostly cuz his fucking arm was in Aybar's nuts." – twistedlogic

by zknower on Feb 2, 2010 11:08 PM EST up reply actions

Oh sure

But his movies still succeed in spite of this. That’s my point. Aliens, T2, Titanic, Avatar. All huge movies, hugely successful, embedded in social consciousness, and from three different decades. All contain myriad examples of Cameron at his strongest and his weakest, and all find ways to work. He’s not a writer, he’s a filmmaker, and to judge him based on the quality of the writing is silly because no one sees a James Cameron movie for the writing, and his movies are not successful for the writing. They’re James Cameron-brand spectacles.

by PhilR8 on Feb 2, 2010 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

box office success is not indication of the quality of a movie

one only has to look at the recent star wars debacles to confirm this.

i agree that they are JC-brand spectacles. that does not make them worthy of best picture. it makes them worthy of other awards, as i have outlined above.

if he’s not a writer, he always has an option of actually hiring someone who can write. but he chooses not to, which is oversight at best and hubris at worst.

look, i saw avatar. i enjoyed avatar. but it has gigantic problems, and it wasn’t even the 5th best movie i saw last year. By “best” i mean that a movie has to fire on ALL cylinders. it needs to be nearly perfect. no stadout crap performances, no scripts that go clunk, no ridiculous plot contrivances. a “best” picture for me is one where I walk out giving it a 9 or a 10. Avatar was pretty and fascinating and unique, but it wasn’t even close to a 9 or a 10 because of the flaws I’ve mentioned.

"I doubt he could reach [second base]...mostly cuz his fucking arm was in Aybar's nuts." – twistedlogic

by zknower on Feb 3, 2010 12:20 AM EST up reply actions

I was using a broader definition of success

I could go on all day about Cameron and how the reason he doesn’t hire out the writing is because he wants total control and that’s how he works best and his movies are stronger for it even if it is his weakness and blah blah blah. I’m obviously a Cameron apologist – he’s my Steve Jobs, if you will – but I see your points. Problems that are gigantic to you are minor to me. I’m just a little annoyed when the focus is always on the writing, because a film is much more than that.

So does George Lucas

and you don’t see any Best Picture Oscars on his mantle.

Lucas is Lucas

The prequels are forgotten except to be ridiculed. He’s been on autopilot since the late 70s – he had to force himself to sit in front of a computer for eight hours a day to write the prequels. His mind would wander and he’d stare out his window, looking at his spacious ranch – then he would have to slap himself and get back down to business. Cameron, on the other hand, has to remind himself to live a life outside of his work and has left a trail of broken marriages and disgruntled employees behind him. Lucas is clinging to his only success – the original trilogy, which I love – and milking it for all it’s worth. Cameron is constantly reinventing himself and pushing the limits of the medium. You can’t compare the two.

by PhilR8 on Feb 3, 2010 12:08 PM EST up reply actions

The most telling part of the originals, to me, is this:

Lucas didn’t direct Empire, and did very little of the screenwriting. And there’s no wonder it’s considered the best of the 6 movies.

Wait — just how many ounces of respect are we talking about here? How long is the list of Unbelievably Stupid Academy Awards? Hey, everybody has favorites.

One of mine is certainly the 1977 Best Actor award going to Richard Dreyfuss for a pleasant sort of walk-through performance in a mildly diverting Neil Simon dramedy called “The Goodbye Girl” — defeating both Richard Burton (“Equus”, for which he was the Golden Globe BA winner) and Marcello Mastroianni (“A Special Day”, which won the Cesar for Best Foreign Film). R-i-i-i-i-ight.

Who knows, it might’ve been a “make-up call” (Dreyfuss deserved an Oscar for “Duddy Kravitz”) or the fact that he was an American or both. The point is: Are they kidding? SNL even did a joke about the award when Dreyfuss guest-hosted.

Sandra Bullock is a moderately gifted actress and pleasant-seeming person whose Oscar wouldn’t embarrass the, er, academicians as much as many others have. I take your point: Streep is a legend, after all— but the voters will not let her win every time out (though she may come as close to deserving such treatment as anybody; I’d give her a special Award for accent-mastery alone, which is something American actors are notoriously feeble at).

Oh, and speaking of Oscars That Might Have Been, what if Brandon hadn't gotten the Godfather role?

Of the half-dozen others who were discussed for the part (incl. Burt Lancaster, Laurence Olivier and Frank Sinatra), I have always felt that the viewers greatest loss was that it didn’t go to…wait for it…DANNY THOMAS!

Which means Philip Tattaglia would’ve been played by Hans Conried, of course…

by Titov on Feb 3, 2010 5:58 AM EST up reply actions

I see your point.

But I still think it would be an embarrassment for the Academy to give Sandra Bullock the Oscar. A big one. If they give it to her, it will cement the fact that the Oscars are no longer about good movies or good actors/actresses—no, it’s popularity contest.

And the thing about Meryl Streep is that they HAVEN’T let her win every time out! Katherine Hepburn of all people has four Oscars. And Streep has two? There’s something wrong here. She deserves to win at least one more Oscar. Look, they’ve snubbed her for better performances (A Cry in the Dark, Bridges of Madison County etc. etc.) than J&J, but she was pretty damn amazing as Julia Child. And the thing about Sandra Bullock is of all these “experts” that are saying she will win the Oscar, not ONE I’ve read said she gave the greatest performance of the year. Not one. That’s telling, isn’t it? So she’ll win the Oscar, but it doesn’t mean she deserved it.

/rant

by DCO'sfan on Feb 3, 2010 8:56 AM EST up reply actions

You’re right that Streep has fewer Oscar wins than she deserves— but her 16 nominations doubtless make some academy voters of neuron-losing age think she actually has more (as I did). And her overall total of acting awards and nominations — 83 and 90 respectively — leads me to feel that if MPA has been somewhat remiss towards her, she hasn’t exactly been, er, neglected by the world’s assembled cinema critics and industries.

Anyway, I’ll campaign against Bullock in the Moscow press if you agree to be a Warehouse mob-scene extra in “The Last Night of Peter Angelos.” Pitchforks will be provided.
