The best guys on Olympic squads are almost always NHL players, but not every Olympic team can field a roster of all NHL’ers. There are plentky of minor league guys making rosters. The NHL has most of the best hockey players in the world.

but even some cold weather cities struggle with attendance. I think it’s the fact that it costs so damn much to play (so kids aren’t growing up with the sport), it costs so damn much to attend a game, and the fact that they allow fighting marginalizes it and makes it more of a spectacle than a legitimate sport (to alot of people at least).
Well, it's also the stakes
If you’re not a hockey nut, the long regular season just doesn’t matter, you know? It’s like people who aren’t baseball fans don’t really care about “meaningless” regular season games.

That is true
I even lose interest sometimes during the regular season. It’s so hard NOT to make the playoffs in the NHL that I almost just wait for them to start. Maybe if they didnt let more than half the teams into the playoffs it would be a bit more exciting.
Olympics = limited supply, high level of exciting play
And the national pride aspect means you can get excited even if you don’t watch hockey any other time – which I generally don’t.
