Let me just put this out there
Anybody remember a sunday game in Anaheim a couple of years ago in which Brady Anderson joined Gary and Jim for maybe four or five innings?. Gary kept inviting him back for another inning, and I wasn’t sure why because there were maybe four or five cringe-worthy moments that Brady had. I had to keep flipping the channel until I was sure it was over.
Now, I’m sure Brady has the potential to get better as an announcer and if anything not be so cringe inducing, but for now, I’m against him becoming one, especially with us.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Anybody else think it's weird
that Meredith has to fight for a bullpen spot?
Also I’m not that big of a fan of Tillman trying to throw a cutter…
Why?
to both questions, really. Meredith was really, really great for one year (2007) but isn’t noticeably better than the other options (such as Albers) – and he has an option (I think), so it doesn’t sound to me like he’s a shoo-in at all. The Tillman thing I don’t know why you wouldn’t like that.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
Meredith
is much more of a proven commodity. He put up a 1.3 WHIP with the O’s last year (as opposed to Albers’ 1.7…) and has a career WHIP of 1.3 over 5 seasons (as opposed to Albers’ 1.6 WHIP over 3 short seasons). So that’s why. Also his great year was 2006 not 2007. But even in his worst full season his WHIP was only 1.5 which would be better than Albers’ best season thus far.
As far as the cutter, lots of pitchers who try to learn the cutter end up losing some velocity.
what does that matter if he's effective?
"I doubt he could reach [second base]...mostly cuz his fucking arm was in Aybar's nuts." – twistedlogic
Not even a little bit.
But generally pitchers who depend on velocity tend to get less effective when they lose that velocity.
I'll bite
The cutter thing I don’t know anything about. That’s certainly interesting, though.
For the record, I’m guessing the bullpen has Meredith, Koji, Gonzo, JJ, Kam the Destroyer, Hendrickson, and Ohman or Castillo in it to start the season. I suspect, though, that Albers won’t make it through waivers, so that’s why I think he’s the prime competitor to Cla’s spot in the bullpen.
I won’t argue that Albers is a better pitcher than Meredith, because he’s not – Cla gets more ground balls and less line drives, and Albers doesn’t walk enough fewer guys or strike out more guys to make up the difference. But Matt Albers had a deceptively good year last year, fat or not, and proved that he can throw more innings than Meredith, which makes him more valuable. And Albers doesn’t have an option left, and I’m guessing won’t make it through waivers. Just throwing away talent, even if it’s just a useful bullpen arm, isn’t the smartest thing in the world.
So there’s, in my mind, a decision that has to be made and shouldn’t have already been made. Not that I endorse using Spring Training sample sizes for making decisions.
Also, my bad, Meredith had two excellent years, 2007 and 2006.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
How did Albers have a deceptively good year last year? He had a BB/9 of 4.8, a WHIP of 1.7,
And when did he prove that he can throw more innings than meredith? When he STARTED 18 games in in 2007?? He threw exactly 2.1 more innings than him last year and Meredith was only on the O’s for half the season. In 2008 Meredith threw 70 innings to Albers’ 50.
Albers
threw 67 innings for the Orioles last year and 12.2 more in Norfolk, and didn’t break down after the shoulder thing. Albers had 49 innings in ‘08 because he got hurt and didn’t pitch after June 25. He would have blown by Meredith otherwise.
Albers did have a better FIP than Meredith in 2009 over more innings (yes, it’s only 2.1 but more is still more) – I was surprised to see that myself, but he had a .360 BABiP compared to a career .314, so it sort of makes sense that he’d sneak up on you in terms of performance.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
So
we should count minor league innings? Where he was pitching because he was doing so horribly at the majors?? Again Meredith was only on the O’s for half a season.
And Albers should get greater weighting because he got hurt in 2008?
And his BABiP might has been higher than career, but that 4.8 BB/9 is what it is.
You're right of course
but, look, gun to my head, I’m saying that Matt Albers can handle a bigger workload than Cla Meredith. Maybe it’s only 15 more innings, maybe it’s less, maybe it’s more, but he can throw more innings. That’s worth something.
And while Albers hasn’t been the bastion of control or anything, Meredith has a FIP in the same region: about 4.00 over the last two seasons, most of which was in spacious Petco Park. Albers put up a 3.92 in the AL East bandboxes, for more innings. He had the better year.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
I don't know.
He had a serious shoulder injury that he rehabbed instead of getting surgery – I think that’s a huge question mark as far as his workload is concerned. If we’re looking in a vacuum and talking about potential I think you’re right that if both pitchers are 100% healthy and pitching well maybe Albers might be able to throw a handful more innings, but I think that’s purely hypotethitical.
I’m sorry – new age statistics be damned I can’t believe that a pitcher with a 1.7 WHIP had a better year than a pitcher with a 1.5 WHIP. Maybe he had an unluckier year, but he sure didn’t have a better year. One guy had an ERA+ of 101 (and for the O’s 120) and the other guy had an ERA+ of 82. It just doesn’t even seem close.
A lot of it
is that Albers kept the ball in the ballpark more than Meredith despite having a worse FB%…which is probably just dumb luck.
But the crux of my argument isn’t that Albers is better than Meredith – he isn’t. The crux is that Albers is useful in a major league bullpen, and the Orioles should think hard about throwing a useful part away unless they are certain that he can’t handle a big workload (which wouldn’t make him nearly as useful).
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
That makes sense
and I don’t know what the deal is with who has options and who doesn’t (Meredith is actually a little younger it seems but cracked the majors sooner), but if you’re asking me to choose between the two of them right now it doesn’t seem that hard of a decision and I don’t really think that Spring Training should make much difference unless once of them is just incredible and the other is terrible.
I agree
and I’m guessing Meredith and Mickolio round out the pen.
The out of options players are: Andino, Albers, Pie, and Guthrie.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
Weird
Refresh my memory on how that works again? Is it total professional service time or major league service time?
To the best of my knowledge
Once you sign a major league contract (either when you’re drafted or when you are first brought onto the 40-man roster which is called having it “purchased”) you are given either 3 or 4 options depending on professional service time. You can only use one option per year, even if you are shuttled back and forth multiple times on and off the 25 man roster, though you have to pass through waivers (or released or traded) to be taken off the 40 man roster.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
It looks like
Meredith has been optioned thrice since his contract was purchased in 2005 (2005, 2006, and 2008), but he must have a fourth option, so it must be based on major league service, not professional service (since he’s been pitching since ’04, but only has just over 3 years ML service)
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
per Wikipedia:
Options
If a player is on the 40-man roster but not on the active major league roster, he is said to be on optional assignment—his organization may freely move him between the major league club and the minor league club. If a player is on the 40-man roster and not the active 25 man roster for any part of more than three seasons (in which he spent 20 or more total days of service in the minors), he is out of options and may not be assigned to the minors without first clearing waivers. However, if a player has less than 5 years of professional experience, he may be optioned to the minors in a fourth season without being subject to waivers. If a major league player is ineligible for free agency and “has options” remaining, his team may option him to a minor league team without consequence. This is usually what is meant when players are “sent down” to the minors. Likewise, when a player on the 40-man roster is added to the active major league roster, he is “called up” to the majors.
Not that Wikipedia is always accurate, but this sounds pretty well-researched.

"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."

Eh
I would say Tampa Bay has spanked him and the Yankees have him him very well, and Toronto hit him pretty well. Does a .793 OPS count as getting spanked?
guess it depends on your definition
Millwood has not been strong against the AL East. Odds are that trend continues. Olney may cherry pick a few batters, but Millwoodd’s career numbers do indicate some tough times ahead in the AL East.
but we play about half against them.

the cutter
At first blush, it seems a good idea to add another pitch. I am concerned, however, by the observation that the pitcher loses velocity with a cutter. I would welcome an explanation. Does the cutter hurt the arm? Or, does the cutter require pitching at an arm angle that produces less are speed, and in order for the cutter to be disguised the pitcher must use that arm angle for all pitches?
Doesn't hurt the arm
It’s actually much better for the arm (and particularly the elbow) than the slider. But in order to put the spin that results in movement on the ball it definitely slows the pitch down and it requires a different release (different hand angle) and it FEELS like it requires a slightly different arm action (even though it doesn’t). So lots of times pitchers trying to learn it end up tinkering with both arm and hand angle and then it can throw off their release for other pitches. There’s that risk with all pitches, but the cutter is particularly difficult in that respect because it’s supposed to be as close to fastball speed as possible (the best cutters are 2-3 mph slower than a 2-seam fastball) so the differences in muscle memory of what’s required to make that happen tend to blur the lines a lot more than when throwing a slider, curveball, or changeup.
Don’t get me wrong – it’s a huge generalization to say that trying to learn the cutter will result in lost velocity, but it can happen. I should have just said it makes me nervous.
Your question
about disguising the cutter is a good one. If thrown correctly it would be from the same arm angle and just the hand angle (really the angle of the fingers on the ball at release) would be slightly different. The problem is that it’s hard as hell to throw it correctly.
The two dbags in NY (pettitte and rivera) are about the best int he business. You can’t see anything different in their deliveries.
