USA vs. Canada Gold Medal Gamethread

3:15 EST on NBC, no tape delay! The USA goes into this game as the underdog, despite the fact we're undefeated in the tournament. We've met the Maple Leafed men twice before, in 1960 where we beat them in what is now known as the Forgotten Miracle. We again met them in 2002 and lost. However this is a different team—this team has the hottest goalie in the Olympics, Ryan Miller, who's had an outstanding 95% save percentage.

I love me some Zach Parise

But it may be hard for him to get 5 points if the US only scores 3 goals.

That's still 3.

You get 1 point for a goal and 1 point for an assist.

Why'd I think a goal was worth 2 points in the olympics?

Take this away from the Gold Medal game

the gap between Canadian and American Hockey is closing quickly.

i think it's pretty much closed.

we beat them once, they beat us once, both games were super-close.

Geez, ANYBODY but Crosby.

We’re gonna hear about this for DECADES. Man, I hope Ovi wins the gold in Russia in 2014…

Screw that

I was hoping USA would win and maybe Parise would finally get some national attention, but even without him i’m never rooting against the US to win.

OK, if Russia and US play, I'm rooting for the US

but if they’re not in the mix, GO OVI!

parise is getting plenty of national attention

or at least he should considering that the world’s “best” players (yea, that includes crosby) had a very pedestrian olympics. parise actually came to play.

by twistedlogic on Feb 28, 2010 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

Well Parise IS one of the world's best

and he was before the olympics as well. It just so happened that very few people outside NJ (and inside NJ, honestly) even knew his name.

by daveh873 on Feb 28, 2010 10:18 PM EST up reply actions

yea but hes never mentioned in the same sentence

as “ovechkin” and “malkin” and “crosby” ……none of whom had a particular great olympics. crosby gets all of the credit for scoring the last goal, but jonathan toews has to be mentioned as canada’s top player in that tourney.

by twistedlogic on Feb 28, 2010 10:30 PM EST up reply actions

Toews made the All-Tourney team

Crosby (and AO) didn’t. The hockey media in Vancouver were paying attention.

yea i noticed

good for him. i never really paid much attention to him before the tourney, but he played great. kane actually did too, although he only really makes news for taking pictures with his shirt off.

by twistedlogic on Feb 28, 2010 11:46 PM EST up reply actions

That was kinda my point

He’s one of the best in the world, and the stats support that, but he’s never mentioned in the same sentence as those guys.

by daveh873 on Mar 1, 2010 8:23 AM EST up reply actions

oh yea haha

that was why i put “best” in quotes cuz really he is, but he’s never mentioned. i think its simply because last year was his first great year. he’s getting more attention since he’s up near the league lead in goals.

by twistedlogic on Mar 1, 2010 10:07 AM EST up reply actions

Also

because he plays in NJ. Most people in this state don’t even know who he is. If you’re a hockey player not named Brodeur here, people have no idea who you are.

by daveh873 on Mar 1, 2010 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

my roommate was in the process of saying that when he scored

now when the penguins play on nbc every sunday, we’ll have those fuckers talking about how great the stanley cup champion and olympic gold medalist sidney crosby is.

Crosby has gold medal and a Stanley Cup

And who’d he beat both times, one Mr. Alexander Mikhaylovich Ovechkin.
