Rockies agree to terms with Mora | ColoradoRockies.com: Official Info
The Rockies made it official for Melmo yesterday afternoon. Salary not diclosed, but it has been reported in a few places as being a one-year, $1.275M deal. -zk

'Cheap' Orioles won't be for much longer - MASNsports.com
Steve Melewski reminds us that while the O's have a ton of young, cheap talent now - Brad Bergesen, Brian Matusz, Chris Tillman, Adam Jones, Nolan Reimold, Matt Wieters, Felix Pie and Jim Johnson will cost a COMBINED $5 million next year - that talent won't stay cheap when they hit arbitration. -duck

MASNsports.com
The Orioles made a one-year offer to Erik Bedard and later came back with a revision that put them in line with the Mariners' reported proposal, but the left-hander apparently prefers to stay in Seattle. Speculated reasons among industry types include a bigger ballpark, competing in the AL West and pitching for a team with a better chance to contend in 2010. Advantage: Seattle. -zk

Wayne Campbell: So, do you come to Milwaukee often?
Alice Cooper: Well, I'm a regular visitor here, but Milwaukee has certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers began visiting here in the late 16th century.
Pete: Hey, isn't "Milwaukee" an Indian name?
Alice Cooper: Yes, Pete, it is. In fact , it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "Open Thread."
Wayne Campbell: I was not aware of that.

This is so odd...

I havent gotten a single flake up here in north Jersey. My buddy in central Jersey already has half a foot at least. Usually we get screwed with all the snow. I’m not used to this.

Like 15 inches so far in Philly

Didnt start here until like 8 last night, so we’re supposed to get at least another 6 inches through by tonight.

We've got 20 inches or more in MoCo, hard to tell exactly.

One look at the online WaPo reminds one immediately of the annual Chicken Little Goes to Washington contest

Who can run around predicting Disaster From Above the loudest? How many dramatic people-buying-“emergency”-groceries-at-Safeway photos can you print? (Do they use the same ones every year? I bet they do, otherwise someone’d have to Go Out There! And photogs aren’t suicidal, at least at the papers I’ve worked for.)

What IS that white stuff falling down everywhere?!? Whatever it is, it’s clearly scarier and more mystifying than The Blob, The Thing or The Attack of the 50 Foot Woman — “descending from the sky” was “a nightmare of horror!”! Yes, “what [they] saw was beyond belief!!”

I think I might finally be turning against Rafa

You pin a lot of the problems on Gillett and Hicks, but he’s done a really poor job with the resources that have been made available to him.

by kba26 on Feb 6, 2010 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, but there's been a lot of injuries.

Especially to Torres and Gerrard. And losing Alonso was a big blow. Gillett and Hicks have seriously dug Liverpool into a hole. There’s even rumors of Torres being transferred, which would be really bad.

I agree, though. I’ve had faith in Rafa for a long time—and I think other fans did, too—but eventually you have to lay the blame somewhere other than the owners. It starts with him. Good managers make do with what they have and they win. I hope they sell the team to someone who can sign good players, but is there news of any potential buyers?

I just finished my first round of shoveling. I figure start when there’s two feet instead of waiting until there is three. Also the family that lives next door to me has been SCREAMING at each other all morning and while I was out shoveling one of them stormed out while another said “Where are you gonna go? It’s a fucking blizzard!” and this chick just kept walking and got all the way to the street (which takes awhile when you’re walking through two feet of snow), stopped, turned around and came back while the other girl (her sister I think?) laughed at her.

How weird is this winter?

We’ve now had two “top 10” snowstorms in the same winter. Though this one isn’t going to be “biggest snow ever” by the official measurement at BWI (it’ll probably be #2, from what I’m reading), it sure feels like more snow is outside my house than 2003.

I went out at 1am and cleared away 10-12 inches because I was restless and wanted to do something productive and you can’t tell I did anything.

My next door neighbor and her brother shoveled snow around the neighborhood after the 09 blizzard.

They apparently made $250. First of all, this guy was an adult, and adults seem to be more sympathetic to teenagers, in that they give them more money. I don’t think they charged $50 for each driveway. Maybe the guy could take a page out of their book and think, if I charge less more people will pay me, so eventually it will add up. But no, instead he charges a lot and won’t get any business.

The thing about our neighborhood is there aren’t that many teenagers so there is more demand for snow shoveling and babysitting. I’m pretty much the neighborhood babysitter, which is nice.

Brad Pitt discussion redux: Welp, I just knocked off Inglorious Basterds-- and BP's list of good performances remains stuck at 2

What was the feeble attempt at a corn-pone accent supposed to show? For a while I thought we were s’posed to get that it was intentionally bad— like you’re s’posed to get the Aldo Raine/Aldo Ray thing — but in the credits there’s a listing for “Mr. Pitt’s dialect coach” — or is that another joke?

Anyway, I can imagine about 3 dozen people playing this lead interestingly, but BP is no. 37. Basically, he’s a distraction. The film itself is, well, what QT does: larger than life storytelling (by a fur piece) while furiously coloring outside the lines of whatever genre comes to hand. You can’t stop watching it, and you can’t stop asking yourself Whaaaa…? much of the time, either. Often it’s an awed Whaaa…?, but often enough it’s a just plain Whaaa…?, too.

Yeah...

…I had a very similar reaction to Brad Pitt.

I also found it mildly offensive that a guy like Quentin Tarantino was giving us his three year old’s take on an alternative history through a Jewish revenge movie. The guy does many things well, but important historical and social events are not on that list. Lastly, I am sick and tired of QT’s nerd obsessions in his fucking movies. Can we not have the hot chick who happens to own her own big ass cinema palace in Paris for once? Can we not have the shootout standoff for the 374th time?

This just in: And here's today's GOOD news on QT:

From http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000233/bio:

“Two of Tarantino’s favorite films are ‘Manos’ the Hands of Fate (1966) (which he owns a 35mm copy of) and Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982), which he references in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003).”

“Manos”, of course, is the consensus All-Time Best MST3K installment (according to Joel, who would know).

Another county heard from

Long Island, about 30 miles out from the City & there’s not a flake on the ground. Just a bit colder than I’d like it, though.

+ No shoveling!
- No snow day!

You can't fix stupid. Stupid is forever.

Well I've been hungover or sick all day

I’m not sure if I had enough beer last night to call this a full fledged hangover. I only had three beers, high alcohol content sure, but it’ll usually take a lot more than that to get me throwing up everything I put in today…

Finally got out of bed at 5 o’clock. At six, I went out for my first cigarette of the day and was quite happy to see Saturn twinkling with a clear sky.

Aww

you guys and your freaking out about snow is so cute! Come visit me in Rochester, NY some time where men are men and we still go to work in a blizzard because, jesus, it’s just a blizzard. You don’t need to load up on groceries. You have more than enough food to last you the two days it’ll take the snow to stop.

Oh who am I kidding? I don’t even remember what the sun looks like. It’s just gray and cold every single fucking day up here.

Let's end with today's sickest OT story: With Pete gone, SC is off and running...after 7th graders

If you see a casually dressed adult male loitering around your local middle school playground, call this number now: 1-800-555-1212.

Suspect may be carrying one or more footballs. Sometimes wears windbreaker with “USC” emblem and “Trojans” in script on reverse.

Why i now live in Israel. OK, it’s not really the reason, but Israelis are funny, they they think the winter is really cold when the temp drops below 50.

Well if work doesn't open, I get to watch the Super Bowl

My shoveling is all done, and my van is pretty much snow-free, but I’m still looking at more than two feet of snow on the road. It took the plows a whole week to get to my street in the week before Christmas storm.

I’m headed out to finish digging out the car/driveway in a few minutes but what’s the point? The freaking road hasn’t been touched and my little Dodge Neon certainly isn’t going to be able to get through it.
