GameThread: Orioles @ Pirates, 7:05 p.m.
I know that wins and losses don't matter in Spring Training but I would really like to see a win tonight. I mean, you know. Winning is more fun than losing, even when it's not necessarily the goal of a spring training game.
Brad Bergesen makes his spring debut tonight, finally fully recovered from his unfortunate commercial filming mishap. He'll be on the first start schedule of 2 innings/30 pitches and I'm happy to see him. With the uncertainty around Brian Bob and Reimold it's nice to have him healthy and ready to go. Bergy's opponent on the mound for the Pirates will be Zach Duke (again).
Tonight's game is being broadcast on MLB Network and MLB.tv. I've been in a fight with Comcast since Sunday because MLB Network isn't showing up as authorized on my TV. I keep talking to them, they keep telling me that they've fixed it, and it keeps not being there. I guess I'll give it one more go and hopefully I'll have figured it out by the time the game starts.
Here are your lineups courtesy of Jen Langosch. Looky who's getting another start at 1B:
| Orioles | Pirates |
| Felix Pie - LF | Andrew McCutchen - CF |
| Cesar Izturis - SS | Bobby Crosby - SS |
| Adam Jones - CF | Garrett Jones - DH |
| Miguel Tejada - 3B | Ryan Doumit - C |
| Matt Wieters - C | Ryan Church - RF |
| Luke Scott - 1B | Brandon Moss - LF |
| Ty Wigginton - DH | Pedro Alvarez - 3B |
| Lou Montanez - RF | Steve Pearce - 1B |
| Justin Turner - 2B | Ramon Vazquez - 2B |

So what (if anything) are we looking for from 3E1N tonight?
I’ll take no injuries and minimal walks. His control and sinker are the only two things keeping him from being horrible (luckily they make him pretty serviceable), and I’m worried about the layoff and injuries affecting that stuff.
That said, apart from injuries, I’m not going to react in either direction based on tonight’s outing. Glad to see the Berger Cookie back.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
I just want him to be healthy
it’ll suck if he gets knocked around but I won’t worry about it yet.

This is too weird (and not gamethread appropriate, but im too startled to load the open thread)
My college roommate just got engaged. to my other college roommate’s older sister.
Were you all roommates together? Or did you live with them at separate times?

That's not that weird
Of course, my grandmother and my grandfather’s sister were college roommates and that’s how they met, so… not that weird to me!

Well
a) i’m only 23, my friends arent supposed to be getting engaged yet.
b) We made fun of my other roommate so much when we found out they were going to the same college, claiming how much the first rooomate was going to sleep with his sister, and now their engaged.
Dude, I was married at 23
It happens.

Looking at their lineup, im not sure they have a single position player that I'd want
McCutchen’s pretty good, but i’m not sure we could work him in any way that would make us better. Doumit is decent too, but i dont even need to explain the situation there.
well if any of those players do break out this season
im sure they’ll find themselves on the trading block
I love McCutchen and Alvarez
past that, I guess I’d take Duke, but there’s not much else there right now.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
Andy LaRoche still has upside
I’d flip Tejada for him in a heartbeat, Josh Bell or no. And right about now, I’d like me some Akinori Iwamura too.

Baseball managers tend to think 2 hitters....
….need to be guys who bunt and hit and run well. And those are skills that generally only hitters who can’t do anything else well do well.

Yeah I get that...sort of
but where did it come from? Is it a holdover from the Deadball Era? Seriously?
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
Furthermore
in all of Cesar’s PA in the two hole last year, no sacrifices! NONE! So how do you explain that?
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
Well, I can't explain it or anything
I think it is part of this silly romanticism for “playing the game the ‘right’ way” that exists with sportswriters and baseball folks like Trembley. And I suspect that this fetish for small ball encourages stupid decisions because no one is going to come out and say a manager is stupid for playing small ball.

"The moment you stop thinking you're the best, it's time for you to get out the game." -'King' Mo Lawal
I think it's consideration
What will come out of it, who knows, but I think they probably realize that the more positions Luke proves he can play the better he is for the O’s and the better his trade value. That’s why it never made sense when they were like, "He’s the DH. That’s it. No 1B. It’s also possibly a precaution regarding Nolan’s Achilles. He’ll need some time at DH in all likelihood and who would you rather bench, Luke or Atkins?
This just in: adorableness on the rise, family copes with child getting schooled. Film at 11. -daveh873

I understand wanting to get Reimold in LF
You gotta see what he can do out there before you relegate him to DH, but yeah, totally.

To start the year
Reimold eventually claims his spot back, but he’s not right right now.
"The moment you stop thinking you're the best, it's time for you to get out the game." -'King' Mo Lawal
Yeah, he just wants to play the field.
I think he’d probably prefer LF, since his numbers probably look a little better on the FA market when accompanied by average (or slightly above average) defense. But he seemed 100% okay with playing 1B last season, and quite willing to work at it.

I guess we have reason to dislike the Pirates, too.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
eh
The Orioles lost their second WS to the Pirates when I was 8 months old. The Pirates of my generation deserve nothing but my sympathy.
This just in: adorableness on the rise, family copes with child getting schooled. Film at 11. -daveh873
Haha.
Yeah, in all seriousness, I’ve always kinda liked the Pirates. I mean, we can commiserate with them, they have a great stadium, and, well, they’re pirates.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
i met an orioles fan on the USC campus today
i was wearing my reimold shirt
it’s nice to share the misery with someone sometimes
Beautiful stadium, great fans
They deserve better
"The moment you stop thinking you're the best, it's time for you to get out the game." -'King' Mo Lawal
They’re getting better. I like Neal Huntington. He’s a good GM. Just give him some time. He didn’t inherit much talent.
Bruce Springsteen rules.
Huntington has only overseen two drafts. And he didn’t inherit a blue chip pitcher to trade away for a huge package of prospects like MacPhail. He had a few kind of good players and received about as good of prospects as you could get.
Bruce Springsteen rules.
I hope he does well

Where did you hear that?
Joe Flacco's eyebrows have been charged with several penalties this season, most for acting as an "ineligible receiver downfield".

So, Berken in ST so far:
4 IP, 0 H (!), 1 BB, 2K. Lots of flyouts tonight, though.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
I know I'm in the minority
but I don’t see any reason that he can’t be an effective reliever in the majors. I actually think he could eventually be fine as a #5/spot starter too. His stuff is plenty good enough.
He could be a reliever possibly
I really don’t want to see him start again. It was just brutal.
This just in: adorableness on the rise, family copes with child getting schooled. Film at 11. -daveh873
I was at his first start
That was plenty enough for me. After that, it got ugly.

Yeah I think his second start was his best of the year
He took the loss and I was bummed for him. Then he didn’t win another for months, poor kid.
This just in: adorableness on the rise, family copes with child getting schooled. Film at 11. -daveh873
I think he could be too, and he's welcome to try to rework himself into a reliever
but even then he’s pretty far down that depth chart too
I definitely agree that he could be an effective reliever.
I’m less sure about starting, as much as I’d love for him to turn it around. From what I recall, he was solid going through lineups the first time, and then got shellacked. Makes me think he’d be an excellent 2-inning guy.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
I mean he's gotta prove a lot of people wrong for a while
before he’ll get another shot at starting, but just looking at his stuff there’s no reason he can’t be a decent back of the rotation starter. He throws hard and has 3 pitches that he can throw for strikes. He has the ingredients – he just needs to put it together. Lots of pitchers don’t ever do it, but who knows.
Why not let him succeed in the bullpen?
You make a living for a long, lomg time as a middle innings reliever.
"The moment you stop thinking you're the best, it's time for you to get out the game." -'King' Mo Lawal
Works for me.
I’m not saying he SHOULD be a starter – I’m just saying I don’t think it’s a fact that he can’t be a decent starter. I’d be thrilled with him being a good reliever.
I'm hoping we never have to find out
because he’s doing so well in the pen and Arietta and Erbe are called up and perform well.
Wouldn’t Hernandez get first shot, anyway?
"The moment you stop thinking you're the best, it's time for you to get out the game." -'King' Mo Lawal
Er, 1 hit, according to tonight's box score. Not sure how I missed that.

Oh, i know
but theres still a huge surplus of housing. they need about another half million people before rent control would be a an actual thing.
I think next year I might get a ticket package for the Orioles
I always wanted to start supporting them once they started showing me something. I know there’s no real need for it now, but I want to get in on the ground floor for access to playoff tickets :)

Speaking of Hendo
is that something that people call him or did someone here just start referring to him as that? I was always under the impression that people just called him that, but I said his name to someone and he said, “Who?” and I said Hendrickson and he was like, “Oh you have a little pet name for him?
