Gamethread: Orioles at Phillies, 1:05 PM EDT
If you're seeing this gamethread, it means it's already 12:30, and the game starts in half an hour. Did you set your clocks forward?
The game is being broadcast on MLB.com's GameDay Audio, and on WPHT 1210 Philadelphia (squeezed in between Rush and Sean).
Lineups, courtesy Britt's Bird Watch:
| ORIOLES LINEUP | PHILLIES LINEUP |
|---|---|
| Cesar Izturis SS | Jimmy Rollins SS |
| Adam Jones CF | Placido Polanco 3B |
| Nick Markakis RF | Chase Utley DH |
| Miguel Tejada 3B | Ryan Howard 1B |
| Garrett Atkins 1B | Jayson Werth RF |
| Nolan Reimold LF | Raul Ibanez LF |
| Josh Bell DH | Shane Victorino CF |
| Chad Moeller C | Juan Castro 2B |
| Robert Andino 2B | Dane Sardinha C |
Hey look, Izzy is batting leadoff. Woo-hoo!
Brian Matusz gets the call for the Birds. Last Monday he gave up 2 runs in 2-2/3 IP, but fanned 6 Twins along the way. He'll be opposed by Kyle Kendrick for the Phils.
There's also a "B" game in in Pirate CIty (closed to the public) which will be started by Jake Arrieta. Trembley is attending that one, so it'll be fun to see who manages the A squad today. My money is on Kevin Millar.
Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring; besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. It's more democratic....And don't hold the ball so hard, OK? It's an egg. Hold it like an egg.

Yeah
I clicked ‘Listen Live’ on their website hoping to get the Orioles game, and all I got was smooth and smarmy Grocery store Jazz…what gives?

they must have that streaming online
they had it streaming over mlb audio but now they’re streaming the game
I'm just glad
that Cesar isn’t batting second anymore. I mean sure you want the guy who had the .365 OBP somewhere higher than 6th in the lineup, and you’d probably want the guy with the career .298 mark somewhere as far from 1st as possible – but hey! Progress!
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
right. it means that tomorrow he'll bat 9th, right?

this shit with izturis not batting 9th...
…has got to stop. I’m inclined to email Roch to ask Diamond Dave that question specifically.
Librarians are hiding something
Good thing..
It’s only spring, and since B-rob isn’t in who’s supposed to hit first? Adam or Nick?
What up?

The correct answer is
ANYONE but Cesar. Seriously – he is the worst possible option.

Matusz cruising
Don’t have a pitch count, but it’s not very high for 2 IP.

According to Gameday it's 20
but they haven’t been right yet this season

Not bad. Not as good as Kendrick, but not bad.

Double off the wall or Rollins
first real problem for Matusz (sounds like it was wind-blown a bit, though).

Utley singles
Rollins scores. First run for Matusz, who had faced the minimum through three.

Thanks
I found it about a month ago, just googling around. It’s from a Topps card, though I don’t know exactly what year.

1988 Topps
I’d recognize that design anywhere

Maybe Miggy should hit leadoff
That way, at least once a game he definitely wont GIDP.
I kinda like the Philly broadcast crew
They’re a little dull, but after the Minnesota doofuses with their shell museum, and the bombastic idiocy of Sterling + Waldman, these guys are a great change.
I'm a big fan of the Phillies crew
they were better of course with Harry Kalas, but so it goes.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
I really like them.
Larry Andersen is great because he has no qualms calling out the Phillies when they do something wrong. Scott Franzke’s pretty good on the play-by-play, if a bit quiet during a pitchers’ duel like today, but his calls on some of the best moments of last year’s playoffs were amazing. LA’s even more grumpy than usual today, which is pretty funny.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
Their interplay is funny in a dry kind of way
They don’t insult your intelligence.

Chad Moeller with the double
he won’t let fucking Garret Atkins out-pretend him!
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
Is Matusz coming out for the 6th?
His pitch count is at 57? I’m sure they’ll let him face one more batter to get to 60.

I predict that Miggy wont hit into a DP, since there are 2 out
I’m an optimist
"It's a beautiful day, whatever Larry might say"
I like these guys more and more.
Johnson's line is gonna be awful,
but he’s getting really unlucky.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
Didn't throw strikes early
That’s not unlucky.

Not saying it's all bad luck,
but two infield hits doesn’t help matters.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
seems like with what we're hearing about Reimold's ankle
Pie is going to get his big chance to continue to impress in left field to start the season.
Hard to believe that Reimold’s ankle is STILL bothering him, though. Wonder if he’s got some DL time in his near future?
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
What have you heard?
Sounded like he was ok out there today.

From Schmuck:
Nolan Reimold grounded out in each of his two at-bats, but looked gimpy after trying to leg out an infield hit in the fifth inning and was removed from the game. Don’t know yet if that was a coincidence or if he aggravated the remaining soreness in his surgically repaired ankle.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
It only makes sense
I mean, his Achilles had a partial tear that required surgery. It’s not a 1 month rehab.
It makes perfect sense to send Pie to LF and Nolan to DH or DL until he’s right. Luke can DH if Nolan’s down completely. But we have two acceptable LF replacements in Pie and Scott.
There’s no sense in sending Reimold out there if he’s not healthy.

Well
according to the box score JJ had at least one easy out on a fielders choice to Tejada. That and a fly ball to Jones. Either could have ended the inning. The three flyballs in a row is a bit concerning thou
From Britt Ghiroli:
After breaking his bat in the 4th, Werth asked Matusz if he threw him a cutter. That’s how much movement was on Matusz’s fastball. #orioles

uh oh
That's what BRob says
but I’d be more interested in what the doc says.

They beat GT?
Well shouldn’t be too long until they fall in the tournament. The ACC was pretty weak this year. They announce at 6 right?
Actually, more
Because at least we KNOW how much the MFY paid for their players.

It's close
The Final Four game in 2001 where the refs practically gave it away to Duke would rank much higher on my list of single-game sports tragedies if Maryland winning it all the next year hadn’t taken the sting away.
Hell, if the O’s had won in 1997, no one would talk about Jeffrey Maier. Heh.

Did anybody see the Buster Olney
piece on ESPN.com about the rumored Pujols for Ryan Howard trade? I mean it won’t happen, but if it were to happen, that is a great way to alienate a fan base.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Wilfredo Perez has to make the team.
He has been lights out this spring, his minor league stats are great, and he’s 25 years old. It’s now or never for the kid…why else string him along? So, when Wilfredo makes the team, whose is sent down in his place? Johnson?
And if Ohman makes the team, who gets sent down to the minors?
Outside of Guts and Matusz and the new reliever they paid big bucks for, there should be no “sure thing” on the pitching staff for Opening Day.
