GameThread: Orioles vs. Blue Jays, 1:05 p.m.
The Orioles have won three games in a row coming into today, and for the first time in awhile we see a pretty good representation of the opening day lineup (2B and LF notwithstanding). Jason Berken will make the first spring start for the O's this year. Berken has had a good spring, allowing just one run over his four outings. The Blue Jays counter with Brian Tallet.
A player to watch is Nolan Reimold. He's hitless for the spring and is said to be limping all over the place. Troublesome. Combine that with Felix Pie's bum shoulder (he hopes to be in a game by Saturday) and Lou Montanez is starting to get excited.
Today's game will be broadcast locally on 105.7 The Fan (Welcome back, Joe Angel) and is available on Gameday Audio and XM176.

We *hope* that 2B is notwithstanding...

Can I just say that
there is no good reason for the Orioles to send Chris Tillman back to AAA in favor of Jason Berken or David Hernandez. Tillman dominated the pretend International League last year in a way that Berken or Hernandez didn’t, and he needs to be in the big leagues to figure out how to get these guys out and get experience. I don’t disagree with saying that there’s a Spring competition for the spot, but if they don’t give it to Tillman regardless of Spring stats they’re Doing It Wrong.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
Does anyone really think there's a chance of it not being Tillman?
Aside from some commenters on Roch’s blog, that is?

I've just being hearing comments from Trembley
saying it’s a competition and he’s weighing spring performance more than last year’s performance (or presumably long-term needs of the club).

ugh

like i said
I’m fine with him saying that stuff – no reason to tell Berken that he has no chance whatsoever; keep them spirits high and whatever. I’ll just be livid if they actually send Tillman down.

100% agreed

I think this depends
If they feel that Tillman needs to go back to AAA to work on his cutter or on keeping his fastball down, it makes sense to me – why let him get beat up by major leaguers if he’s working on something?
Performance in the minors isn’t the only or even the main thing prospects are trying to accomplish. To a degree, I think we have to trust the judgment of the coaching staff on these matters.

Izturis with his second hit of the Spring!
You’re not helping me convince Trembley to bat you ninth, jerk!

It's funny but we've barely heard a peep about Adam Jones this spring

Considering that most of the news in general has been injury-related, that's probably a good thing.

I want to play against him online.

Berken seems pretty good so far
2 IP, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB. Of course I don’t recognize many names in the Jays lineup.

Yeah,
I keep having to temper my enthusiasm for how he and Hernandez are doing, since they’re facing a lot of minor leaguers.

Well so much for Berken's line
looked like shit himself on the mound after Markakis muffed the play.

basically wiggles dove for a grounder, causing the ground to shake
then the ball hopped under nick’s glove and the torontos kept running till the running was done
I wonder what he thinks of San Francisco

I bet he kisses the ground there each day...
…thankful that it of all places wanted to pay him multiple millions of dollars to start.

Hernandez and Berken
They’ve looked better so far this spring, but they still have to work on their major problems from last year. Hernandez is prone to the long ball, and Berken is vulnerable to letting up a big inning. We’ve seen the former before this spring, and today we’ve finally seen the latter. It’s no reason to write off their seeming improvements, but they still have things they need to work on.
The thing is, both of them had good AAA stats before being called up, which makes me worry that they’re too good for AAA but not good enough for MLB, and thus they’ll never really have the right opportunity to work on their problem areas. At the same time, neither of them really had that many AAA innings, so maybe they still can work on things at that level. I really can’t tell, though.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
Three things on Berken
1) His contact rate last year was below average, and if he can’t miss bats in the AL East then he won’t be successful in the AL East. That’ll lead to a lot of big innings, as you noticed.
2) Berken has only five games at AAA total in his career. And he wasn’t that great there, either. Lowest strikeout numbers (which translated over to his time in Baltimore last year) and a .242 BABiP which belied his performance. But it was still just 5 games. If any of these pitchers had things to prove in the minors still, it’s Jason Berken.
3) Their “improvements” have come in Spring Training. Please disregard those performances, as they have come against minor leaguers and hitters trying to get the rust off.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
Good points.
Yeah, I only glanced briefly at their pages on FanGraphs for their AAA IP before posting, so I didn’t check the peripherals (which I usually do). I suppose that, among other things, Hernandez can work on that two-seamer while Berken works on improving his K/9.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
Eh
I don’t think #3 is completely valid – you don’t totally disregard improvements seen in sprint training – you just take them for what they are.
fair enough
but I wouldn’t make roster decisions based primarily on spring training performance
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
jones just fouled one into the radio booth
and joe yelled LOOKOUT FRED
then you heard the ball go wham
then fred kept talking so presumably he lived
Titov will be so disappointed

I sometimes wonder if they make that stuff up and do the sound effects themselves because they're bored
It seems like the kind of thing radio guys would do … a boring, meaningless spring training game, you just yell “Lookout, Fred!!!” and smack the table really hard right next to the mike. Wakes everybody up a little.

I met Fred in Florida briefly
I’m shocked that every single one of the balls from todays game didnt hit him. Dude is a large target.
Who is his uncle?

heh
Ron Washington tested positive for cocaine last year. My girlfriend did a painting for school detailing the Pittsburgh cocaine scandal that I posed for of a Pirates player doing blow in the shape of a baseball diamond (if I can get this to work):
Now that will always be my mental image of Ron Washington.

And Izturis is the one hit
he is clearly the best player on the team – I regret ever doubting batting him leadoff!!

Kam seems to be having a rough day.
3 BB and 1 HR in 2 IP? He’s lucky there wasn’t anyone on base for the homer.

If we actually end this game with more errors than hits, that's really pathetic.
