so far … 10 minutes of stadium nat sound and counting

not a peep from any announcer

i heard the lineups but too lazy to write ’em down. luke at first; turner at 2nd; weet catching

still an improvement over buck martinez though

oh here we go. some doods are calling game now.

izzy batting leadoff Ks on 3 pitches from romero.
jones grounds out after running count to 3-2

Now there's a phrase I hope to never hear again.
izzy batting leadoff

if roberts is gonna be out

then i wouldnt be THAT opposed to izzy leading off. his OBP sucks, but who else are you gonna put there?

by twistedlogic on Mar 18, 2010 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

ANYBODY

I’d rather have a slow guy who actually gets on base than a fast guy who doesn’t.

by O'sFan21 on Mar 18, 2010 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Anyone with a career OBP over .300.

Would be an improvement.

From the Land of Pleasant Living...

by OEutaw on Mar 18, 2010 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

yes

seriously – why would you put your worst hitter at leadoff?

Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

by Andrew_G on Mar 18, 2010 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

cuz it makes more sense than a guy getting on base

and then not scoring even if markakis or jones hit a double or something

by twistedlogic on Mar 18, 2010 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

a couple things

1) you’re setting up the straw man of a false dualism between Cesar Izturis, leadoff hitter, and Ty Wigginton, leadoff hitter. There are also good options out there (I’d personally put Nicky in there)

2) how is it better to have runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs than a runner at 2nd with 1 out?

3) the most important thing in baseball is to not make outs. Nobody moves the clock on the Orioles like Izturis. So why would you give him the most plate appearances?

Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

i think for #2 you mean how is it NOT better.....right?

I'd rather the slow guy be on base

than the fast guy never get on base to begin with.

Odds of scoring are much higher when you don’t spot the other team an out leading off.

I'm starting to resign myself

to the idea that Guts just isn’t that good. Hopefully he’ll be a little better than 2009, but I don’t see much reason to expect a big improvement.

i agree with this

i havent given up on him yet however

Yeah

I’m trying not to give up on him…

by O'sFan21 on Mar 18, 2010 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it's hard to tell, but I'm starting to think that way myself.

It’s hard to think he just got lucky in ‘07 and ’08, but he did have a somewhat lower than average BABiP and a slightly higher than average percentage of stranded runners. Couple that with a declining K/9 and his never-great HR/9, and it’s a bad combination.

Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.

Well, the guy is 31 years old

you know, he’s declining, and he was never an ace type of pitcher. But he’s still useful. Don’t go crazy because of one bad spring training game here, gang.

But, even if we are in worst-case scenario mode...

we have options now. We have David Hernandez, Jake Arietta, and others to take that spot. Gone are the days we needed Daniel Cabrera to work out because we just didn’t have anything better or potentially better behind him. We still have potentially better pitchers waiting for their chance. That’s a good thing.

Swazye?

Per Urbandictionary, this is my best guess:
Swaze
Adjective; When something or someone is very good or pleasing…similar to words such as sick/swag/sweet.
- This tune is swaze man, loving it!

- Man, that skill you just did was swaze, nice goal.

- You going to this party friday?…Yeah man!…It’s gonna be so swaze!

In one game as a freshman at Miami, Wieters hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to put the Yellow Jackets ahead, then pitched the bottom of the ninth for the save. On that day, the God nickname was bestowed. - Sports Illustrated
