Uehara hurt, Guthrie rocked in Orioles' loss - baltimoresun.com

Excuses, excuses
Maybe Guthrie got bombed because he pitched on the WBC Team last year!!! HA HA HA HA !!
I think its time we start considering
That Guthrie may not be able to contribute in any way to our future. Meaning that we need to hope that we have 5 future SP’s among our young guys.

Agree.
I know it’s ST & it’s early… but after a couple good early appearances he’s looking just as bad as last year.
How long do you give him? If I’m MacPhail & Trembley, going with the “emphasis on W-L”, I can’t think you give him much more than April.
This might be the real 5th spot in the rotation.
Millwood, Matusz, Bergesen, Tillman, …….

guthrie a reliever
i think guts would make a quality reliever. i think that when erbe or arrieta is ready to come up that we should shift the rotation and move him to the bullpen..hes got great stuff the first time through the rotation… could work.

Wow
one bad game IN SPRING TRAINING and everyone is saying “Guthrie has no value to the Orioles” and that he should get pushed to the bullpen in favor of David Hernandez?
Wow you guys. I thought there were other places to go for wild overreactions.

For the record...
I agree with this. I’m willing to give Guts every possible chance to succeed. As of right now, he has 2 quite good seasons and 1 bad one. Until the bad starts outweighing the good, there’s no point in giving up on him. What I said about him not being a reliever was assuming that he’d have to be bad enough for the O’s to even consider him for that role and if that’s the case, then I dont see him making the transition well.
Ok heres why its not a wild overreaction
I’m not just reacting to one spring training game, its been a concern for me that even in his better years his periferals were never that great (FIP’s and tERA’s around 4.5 in his good years). His K/BB has dropped in two straight years and his GB% and thus HR% took a turn for the worse last year. If that doesn’t change this year then his ERA very likely will not be under 5 on average. Meaning he wont be able to contribute to a contending club.
Still, he’s got the entire year to prove himself, no reason to give up on him.

one bad game IN SPRING TRAINING and everyone is saying "Guthrie has no value to the Orioles"
Nobody is saying that. “I think its time we start considering,” is different than saying he has no value.
Bruce Springsteen rules.
If he had pitched well yesterday
we wouldn’t be having this conversation, and my point was more on that aspect of the overreaction part than the degree of it.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
if he pitched well
Our doubts may be silenced for a few days but the legitimate concern arises from the concerning trend that isn’t getting any better.

Overreaction
I agree with reddrummer. He’s struggled last year. It’s not we’re looking at yesterday’s start in a vacuum. It’s just another data point showing that Guts is giving up HRs at an alarming rate. I imagine this trend will continue until Guts develops an out pitch.
Bruce Springsteen rules.
not much
Johnson’s familiarity with the Nationals’ top pitching prospect, Stephen Strasburg, didn’t hurt. Johnson managed Strasburg in the 2008 Olympics before the right-hander became the top overall pick in June’s draft and signed a record $15.1 million contract. And Johnson has known Washington manager Jim Riggleman since the mid-1980s, when their paths crossed in the Double-A Texas League.
“I didn’t want to do a whole lot of traveling, but I told (Rizzo) I’d be happy to come to spring training,” Johnson said.
So when spring drills convened an hour’s drive from his home near Orlando, Johnson pulled on a new uniform and went back to work.

guthrie
starting to remind me of ponson more and more except guthrie isn’t an ass i say give him this yr if he ain’t a starter let’s move him to the pen if that doesn’t work we can say we gave him every opertunity or we could just trade him at the deadline for a aa or aaa 2b
Guthrie
is a billion times cooler than sir sidney. I like Guts a lot and I really hope he fixes himself right quicklike.
cxcxcxcxzzzzzzzzz
ehhhhh
I don’t know about that. He’s got some major anti-cool factors going on that I won’t get into…
In Guthrie's defense..
I doubt Ponson would ever have been cool enough to appear in an Orioles Magic video.

Yeah, but is Guthrie a member of the fundamentalist sect?
He may be, I have no idea. But if you’re gonna condemn Guts for horrible stuff that a radical Mormon sect perpetrates, then you might as well condemn all Catholics for the many horrible things they’ve done in the past. You can extrapolate that out to any religion or organization.
Personally, if Guts didn’t do it, I don’t hold it against him.
And I’m not holding the actions of anybody else against him. I just have a hard time saying somebody is cool if they believe in that stuff. It’s too crazy for me.
Ohboy.
At the risk of making things worse, and not wanting to offend anyone, what religion doesn’t sound crazy if you kind of take at face value its core beliefs or the past events upon which it’s founded?
For example, millions of Americans worship a guy who allegedly rose from the dead after 3 days.
Mormonism has the disadvantage being founded in a historical period where claims of this nature are taken much more skeptically, but are its core claims really THAT MUCH crazier.
(Disclosure: I’m Lutheran. But not a radical, violent Lutheran.)
Oh I agree
That most religions are pretty crazy, but I would argue that the core beliefs of mormonism ARE actually that much crazier. The whole thing was founded by a con-artist.
ok, if that's your point?
i don’t know a whole lot about mormonism, but you’d have to go pretty far to find a religion that doesn’t have a violent past and/or present.
that Guthrie was raised Mormon and practices his faith is hardly an indictment of him.
"I doubt he could reach [second base]...mostly cuz his fucking arm was in Aybar's nuts." – twistedlogic
Eh
I’m not so worried about the violence. It’s just so crazy to me that it’s hard for me to separate the two and really hard for me to say anybody who believes in that is “cool.”
Again that’s just me and I hope I’m not offending anybody…
I really don't think you have to worry about offending anyone
especially since z and I basically baited you until you spilled your guts.
i don't find believing in "that"...
…any different from folks believing in other organized religions.
which is to say, i think most/all organized religions are pretty f*cked up, but whatever floats your boat.

yeah, i'm curious too.
what in the world is “anti-cool” about guthrie?

Well you know
being a Mormon who doesn’t really preach his beliefs that much is totally on the same uncool level as being Sidney Ponson, drunken fatass.

Guthrie won't be in the rotation in 2011
Any more than Millwood will. They are both inning eating veterans holding spots in the rotation until the young un’s are ready. Guthrie is a .500 pitcher when he is right. Worse when he is not. Some time in the next year, Arrieta, Erbe, Hernandez and Britton will make guys like Guthrie extras. It wouldn’t surprise me if it happened this summer. Give Guthrie until May. Just like Atkins. They’re over thirty and maybe can produce, maybe not.
I really hope
for Guthrie’s sake, that he was trying out some new pitches yesterday that he didn’t have great command over.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
Dave wins
I just…I can’t do it anymore. My soul is broken. Putting the worst hitters (as long as they’re speedy so they don’t clog up the bases!!!!) at the top of the lineup is just going to be the way of things from now on, and I just have to accept it. Sigh…….
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
It really makes you wonder
whether he’s ever even looked at Andino’s and Izzy’s OBPs.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
Just that they're fast
Fast guys are leadoff hitters. All of the best leadoff hitters are fast guys like Ricky Henderson and Corey Patterson. Why would you want slow guys clogging the bases for the big bats in the 3-5 slots?
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
Yeah.
I get why he does it, it’s just so wrong that I can’t believe somebody hasn’t told him to stop yet. It’d be one thing if he had a fast .360 OBP guy who could steal and a slow .370 OBP guy and decided to go with the former, but… it’s nothing like that at all. I’m just hoping he’ll stop once the season starts, but I really don’t know if he will if B-Rob’s not in the lineup.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
You just have to accept it
There is one fortunate thing here though. Last year Brian Roberts got on base 35.6% of the time and Izturis got on base 29.4% of the time, but we’re replacing Roberts with Wigginton, who OBPed 31.4% of the timed.
In the worst case scenario, Wiggy hits 9th and Izturis hits 1st, which would have given Izzy 146 more PA than Wiggy in 2009 (hypothetically), compared to Roberts 1st and Izzy 9th best (or at least most realistic and normal) case. In the worst case scenario, Izzy makes 47 more outs than Roberts but Wiggy makes 12 fewer outs, which is only a difference of 35 outs over 1380 plate appearances (if we’re extrapolating to a full season – and we’re not).
So it’s like dropping from a .328 combined OBP between 1st and 9th with Roberts and Izturis to .303 combined OBP with Izzy and Wiggy (and that’s worst case extrapolated). Since we’re losing Roberts anyway, that .328 is going to have to go down, but I don’t think that this is really worth getting too too upset over (even if Dave is almost certainly doing it proudly completely wrong).
But then I realized that the real worst case is Andino (.274) leading off and Izzy hitting 9th, which gives a combined extrapolated .283 OBP and oh sweet jesus I think that could actually hurt quite a bit.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

But still
how come AM can’t just say “Hey Dave, ya fat fuckin’ dumbshit, how about how leading off with our worst OBP?” It doesn’t seem that hard.
autonomy I guess
or worse – maybe Andy thinks its the right move, too. Don’t want to be clogging up them bases nosireebob.
