Just in case you needed cheering up
Here's a quick look at at how awful the starting pitching was in 2009 compared to the rest of the AL East. No matter which stat you fancy, it's ugly stuff. Nowhere to go but up! Bring on Opening Day.

well its true
wins are just a number out of context. thats what statistics provide. but after reviewing the above statistics, i have say they are quite overrated and we should ignore them. this year will be better.

Sometimes, it's too easy to forget how bad we sucked.

Is the first column starters only?
Because otherwise, I can’t figure out how we pitched almost 100 fewer innings than every other team.

starting pitching only
I left out that one important word. fixed.

We apparently don't strike enough people out
I’m guessing Matusz will make up a lot of that difference himself. :)

Adam Eaton, Mark Hendrickson, Alfredo Simon, Rich Hill, Bad Guts, is there anyone else that won’t be in the rotation this season?
What up?
probably jason berken/david hernandez
but who knows. also bad guts may not be quite gone yet, but time will tell

Yeah
I give Berken/Hernandez the benefit of a doubt… But yeah, that’s where the awful numbers come from.
What up?

More reason for optimism?
If you cut out the guys who aren’t on the team anymore or are unlikely to make the 25-man, you get these numbers:
(Pitchers included: Guthrie, Bergesen, Uehara, Matusz, Tillman, Hendrickson, Johnson, Mickolio, Meredith, & Albers.)
ERA: 4.501
WHIP: 1.446
HR/9: 1.197
SO/9: 5.640
BB/9: 3.165
SO/BB: 2.024
Still worst in the division on most counts, and the biggest thing is the low SO/9, but I think there’s reason to hope that the pitching is significantly better this time around.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
Wanna take a stab at the probably starting 5 and replacements?
Millwood, Matusz, Guthire, Bergesen, Tillman.
I;m guessing some combination of Hernandez, Arrieta and Berken make 12 starts between them.
"The moment you stop thinking you're the best, it's time for you to get out the game." -'King' Mo Lawal
Just the starters, combined 2009 stats:
ERA: 4.311
WHIP: 1.397
HR/9: 1.328
SO/9: 5.353
BB/9: 2.955
SO/BB: 1.896
Since this is just the summation of their 2009 stats, Millwood’s fluky-good ERA is throwing things off, and Tillman and Matusz aren’t having much of an impact on the numbers, since they pitched many fewer innings. So, basically, this is not in any way a projection.
It also doesn’t factor in the likely starts by Hernandez/Berken/Arrieta; I’d have to do a bit more work to factor them in. Might try it tomorrow if I’m bored at work. :P

wow look at the O's k/9
that’s ridiculously low. Typically pitchers with a k/9 of five are struggling to stay in the league. Of course we have 3EN1 who almost never strikes out opponents. That should shoot up to at least 6 this year although as a pitch to contact team we won’t be close to the other AL east teams
the saddest part about last season was that I probably went to more games than I ever have
I was there just about every Friday…lost nearly every time, although there were some bright spots! wieters debut, the comeback, felix’s cycle, the season finale (walk off error for those who don’t remember)…good times, I’ll be getting out there April 10, just got my tix yesterday, it’s gonna be a wild year. more relevant to your chart: these numbers really have to improve right? there’s really no way we could have been much worse short of losing 100…I feel like we can score 5 a game no problem this year and the continuity of an established closer certainly doesnt hurt. millwoods been knocked around a bit (ok a whole lot) but he’ll come around eventually right?

I feel much better looking at that dogshit.
Look at the massive upgrades in personnel we have in the rotation this year. It almost has to get better.
