Joe Mauer extends with the Twins - 8 years, $184M
Good for Mauer and good for the Twins. I'm glad this got taken care of before the season started. As O's fans we know the love of a hometown boy and now Joe Mauer will be playing for his hometown team through his 35th birthday.
Additionally, it's nice to know that Mauer won't be suiting up for Boston or New York anytime in the near future.
As is to be expected, they are celebrating at Twinkie Town.

Shouldn't he sign for free, then?

Mauer will now always be overlooked during discussion of
The best catcher and/or one of the best baseball players ever, but this bodes well for us.

There was much rejoicing
As a Twins Fan I LOVED this!!! The MAUER stays in Minnesota.
As an O’s Fan I was very relieved that he didn’t go to Boston or New York. Can you imagine… shudders
A good day for baseball! :)

As a Twins fan...
don’t you feel like it might just backfire and leave the organization hamstrung? Thats alot of money to give one dude, especially when you are a small to mid market team.
Luckily, the Twins seem to know how to make a decent team out of a relatively small payroll, so hopefully it won’t hurt too much. Still, if I was in that position i’d definitely have bittersweet feelings about the signing.
We've upped our payroll about $15MM this year...
…and remember that Joe’s already making $12.5MM a year. So, what’s the difference of an additional $10MM, really? Subtract what we’re paying Joe, and we’ve pretty much got the same amount to pay the other 24 players that we’ve had for the last several seasons. And we’ve put together good teams on that money.
This could burn us, but if ever there was a safe bet, aside from Cal, this is it.

Hopefully the new stadium will provide for a regular bump in payroll

This is true
In theory that paired with Mauer will pay for his contract

Playoff berths help too
and I dont see anyone running away with that division. I guess it shouldn’t really hurt them too much unless they suddenly start making huge mistakes come draft time.
Your concern is valid
However, like veryone else here as stated, we are getting new revenue from Target Field. So our payroll will increase.
There’s always a risk when you do ANYTHING. But The Twins FO didn’t really have a choice. Either pay him $184 million over 8 years or alienate your entire fanbase/ticket holders.
MAUER is the of the Twins and letting him go would be too costly.
You are right the Twins have a history making something out of very little. In Bill Smith I trust. LOL

Well no matter what happens
I’m really happy you guys resigned him. If the Yankees got him, well, I just may have lost it. Crawford is gonna be hard enough to see in stripes as it is.
We couldn't
Have Mauer hitting HRs off our beloved O’s as a Red Sox or Yankee now can we?
Shudders What a horrible mental image.
Poor Crawford….
