The first seder is TONIGHT.

Some people might think it’s strange (especially non-Jews) but I love passover. I know, I know, you are forced to eat cardboard and can’t eat a lot of other things, but the whole premise of the holiday makes for a very interesting eight days. I love the seder, spending time with family and friends. Even though we tell the same story every year, I always get something new out of it.

I don’t know if Christians feel something similar during Easter (after all, the last supper was a seder).

I just love passover.

I hear ya

As a Christian I love Lent and Easter. We tell the same story every year as well and I always get something new out of it. It’s wonderful.

I heard a quote once that, while written by a Christian historian, it seems applicable to what you’re talking about as well.

“Traditionalism is the dead faith of the living, Tradition is the living faith of the dead.”
 - Jaroslav Pelikan.

Even though it’s the “same” every year it’s living and different all at the same time.

Ok enough of the religious soapbox I think. Have a great passover! =)

I need some help with my Orioles purchasing

I’ve got a 25 buck MLB Shop gift card I won at Fanfest, and there’s two hats that I like, 50’s Cartoon brid and The O’s hat I wanted the orange cartoon bird one, bu that seems not be availble in my size.
Any thoughts?

I'm sorry

but it seems like they are saying Pie/Reimold is going to be more of a platoon then a situation where Pie may start here and there and they’ll shift Nolan to DH. This is fine if they are just doing it while Nolan is still a bit sore, but I really don’t want to end up seeing Nolan only facing lefties. That would anger me greatly.

Also, Tejada in the 4 hole is stupid.

by daveh873 on Mar 29, 2010 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

I think that they're saying while he's still hurting

given the use of the word initially. Makes it sound like once Nolan is 100% things will change.

by zknower on Mar 29, 2010 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I dunno...

there’s a possibility we could go 3 up 3 down and have Tejada leading off the 2nd. He can’t possibly gidp then. I think the 3 hole is perfect. That way if no one gets on he can at least end the inning, even if it isnt with a dp.

by daveh873 on Mar 29, 2010 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

maybe it's just me but I have no problem with pie...

this year…IMO he’s a better fielder, he’s shows flashes of his potential every once in a blue moon, and reimold might just end up going to first later on down the road anyway. what I’m saying is that this year, while reimold recovers, pie is a good fill in and if he breaks out with a pretty solid season, well then we have the worlds best problem on our hands.

Don't get me wrong

I really like Pie. I just don’t think his ab’s should come at the cost of Nolan getting full time ab’s (and at least part time LF duty). Nolan has enough potential that i’d hate to see him become a platoon player this early in his career. I don’t think this will happen, but i’m still a little worried about it a bit.

That was a moronic article

He acts like the trade was Bedard for Jones straight up (which Seatlle would no doubt do in a heartbeat right now) and then ridicules it on that basis. I mean, nevermind that we also got Sherrill (you know, the guy who served as our closer and brought us back our currently highest ranked position prospect), Tillman (definitely a legit prospect even at the time this article was written), and Mickolio (who was a nice upside player at the time as well). No sense in bringing that part up, right?

Then you have some idiot in the comments saying “Yeah this is a pretty good summary of how we O’s fans feel”. If by “we O’s fans” you mean the other O’s fans like yourself that don’t pay attention to the sport or the team whatsoever and have no idea what the hell they are talking about, then yes. I fully agree.

Sadly I don’t know if i’ll be playing this year and I doubt I could get those things over my calves.

by daveh873 on Mar 29, 2010 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Yeah, I've worn them while taking infield practice and playing catch

But even that was mostly cause I was so excited when I first got them. It would usually be pretty inconvenient to put them on for such an informal thing. But I plan on wearing them every Tuesday because it is the most insane day at work. It’s two for Tuesday on pizza. I wear pants over them, and cuff them up. I’m much better at it than in that picture. Also, jeans don’t work very well, and the shorter the pants are, the better.

At work though, nobody sees them until the last 45 minutes when we’re closing. My pants are down until all customers are gone. A lot of people roll up their pants anyway, and a good portion wear high socks, we have to scrub down a decent sized kitchen.

So far, they have turned Tuesdays from a hellish day into a mildly stressful one in which I wear stirrups.

I gave one pair to a boss who got transferred, and I sent one to my brother in Los Angeles, where apparently people play pickup baseball everywhere you look.

I'm surprised there's not more conversation about DH being the fifth starter

Is this not a shock to anyone else? Clearly he has better ST numbers, but it almost seemed a foregone conclusion that Tillman would be rounding out the rotation unless he had a truly dismal spring.

by VB O's Guy on Mar 29, 2010 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

At first I was a bit pissed

But what the hell. If DH sucks, we bring up Tillman and no biggie. If DH is great, well we just found another starter to add to the collection. Tillman is still young (he’s only 21) and i’m sure there are some things he can still learn at AAA. He wasn’t exactly lights out at the ML level last year. Hernandez is already 24, so if they want to ride the hot hand coming out of spring, whatever. Give him his shot. This does kinda kill my Tillman vote on the Camden Chat contest though.

I'm disappointed that this is even an issue

Tillman basically needs to be the guy IMHO. Tillman’s got more potential and will be better served by being in Baltimore than in Norfolk, and I’ve never been a big fan of Hernandez’ since I saw him in Bowie a couple of times.

But…well, those K numbers are so shiny. And Rob Neyer convinced me by saying “it doesn’t really matter, whoever pitches best will get it soon enough”.

But still, the whole idea of spring training competition makes my mouth taste sour. Are we so quick to forget that one time that Tillman struck out 8 Yankees?

Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

by Andrew_G on Mar 29, 2010 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

My take

Tillman will obviously get his shot; he’s just 21. Hernandez has shown that he can be lights out in AAA but hasn’t shown it at the majors. He probably deserves another chance. 2010 is still something of an experiment year.

I agree

I am not too upset. I think Tillman was still a year or two away from being really good in the majors so you may as well see what DH can do. Tillman will be up soon enough, pitchers get hurt all too often.

I want to see DH moved to the bullpen as soon as possible

and not just because I want to see Tillman in the rotation. I think he has the potential to have really electric, late inning stuff, especially if he can add a few mph to his fastball with the stress of going 6+ innings removed. For me, the sooner he makes the transition and learns to be a quality reliever the better.
