I still root for Loewen

He was talented just rushed and the injuries killed him. I dont blame him for leaving for Toronto when he had the chance. You’ve gotta respect someone that is willing to go back to the bottom and start again at something. He could have easily just left baseball and lived on his millions but he didn’t.

Wasn't he supposed to resign for the Orioles and went back on some informal agreement after he was released?

That would be my only reason for not really wanting to see him succeed, otherwise i couldnt care less. I’m pretty sure the Orioles were fully behind his switch to a position player, and had to release him in order to send him down to the minors. Then once he go this release, he jumped ship and signed with Toronto. Someone correct me if im wrong.

by kba26 on Mar 3, 2010 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

you're correct

But still, he wanted to live near home. I cant blame the guy, we were going to release him if he didnt anyways. He didnt do anything rediculous.

by zknower on Mar 3, 2010 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

The real trick is apparently pronouncing it correctly.

I’ve heard that it’s really supposed to be pronounced “fort” (as in McHenry) rather than “for-tay” (as in the musical term for loud). I don’t know anybody who pronounces it the former way, though.

dictionary.com has is both ways

when you click the little “listen to” icon. I think I’ll continue to say “for-tay” because I don’t think anyone would understand what I meant if I said “fort.” Maybe that’s an indication that I should stop using the word altogether.

by PhilR8 on Mar 3, 2010 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

I think that's one of those things

where even if saying it “fort” is technically correct, 99.9% of the people who hear you say it that way will assume you’re saying it incorrectly, so you may as well just say it the other way.

It’s Guthrie today, Matusz tomorrow, Tillman Friday, and Millwood Saturday. Bergy isn’t ready to pitch in a game yet so it’ll probably be a scrub.

by zknower on Mar 3, 2010 11:10 AM EST up reply actions

Atkins is certainly the biggest question mark this spring.

He was signed as a “corner infielder” and everyone assumed our 3B placeholder until Tejada signed. Then he was shuffled over to 1B where he played before getting to the Rockies. Helton blocked him there, so he became a 3B. Anyway, Atkins is 30 yrs old. Not “on the wrong side of 30”. He had a so-so year in ‘08 and a bad year in ’09. If he and Crowley can’t revive his batting by May, I suspect he will be done. If that’s the case, we will see Snyder, Aubrey or Hughes at 1B in Baltimore. BUT…. predicting and projecting what we will get out of Garrett Atkins this year is not productive or useful. He and Crowley are going to try to fix his stroke and we are simply going to have to wait to see if it works. I have no problem with waiting since our alternatives are limited at this point. I don’t care about fantasy baseball rosters, so I’m willing to be somewhat patient and see how it goes. I’m convinced his fielding will be just fine. He has played there before and some say he is more natural there anyway. If he hits, he is a good sign. If not, we go on to plan “A” a little earlier than we thought. That’s all.

by fuddnelson on Mar 3, 2010 10:13 AM EST reply actions

well in a sense, i agree with fudd

we spend ridiculous amounts of time telling ourselves that guys like atkins are going to suck before he’s even played.

by twistedlogic on Mar 3, 2010 10:20 AM EST up reply actions

Well he sucked last year

and he’s had declining production the last three.

Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait for baseball season to start so we have something else to talk about. But in the meantime, like Dave said, what else should we do right now?

"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."

but that’s what we do as fans. If we all just sat around waiting for things to play out we’d have nothing to do all winter. It’s useless, but it’s just entertainment.

Well, if you're just discovering Portishead (which i dont mean as a bad thing), probably not

They pretty much started trip-hop, which a the mix of slowed-down electronica and hip-hop. Portishead and Massive Attack are probably the two most famous trip-hop groups.

I think they do the House theme

Could be wrong, but if you watch the show you’d recognize one of their songs

Awww z, welcome to Mazzy Star

a staple of my teen years. If you continue to dig, I suggest checking out Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions. They only released one album to my knowledge but it’s of the same ilk.

Stylo is the cat's meow.

That’s all I’ve heard, but it is the shiznit. I’m of the mind that all bands should be imaginary.

ESPN.com's new blog (called TMI) loves Brad Bergesen.

It’s Insider-only, but some highlights:

His 3.43 ERA was the lowest by an Orioles starter in his first big-league season since Mike Mussina in 1991 (min. 10 starts).

Bergesen was 7-1 at home with a 2.68 ERA, the lowest by an O’s starter (min. 10 starts) since Mussina’s 2.65 mark in 1992, the park’s inaugural season.

I don’t think they’re saying he’ll be as good as Moose, but regardless, his rookie season was really, really good. The article is very bullish on him, even if it makes a bit of fun over the whole commercial fiasco.

Dude got outs. Hard to argue with the results.

Hope it continues.

Anyone else a tad ruffled that Miggi still hasn't bothered to consult any other converted 3Bmen?

I kinda feel like that should have been a given.

Do we know that he hasn't?

I’m not saying that he has, but do we know?

Also

Do we know who Cal consulted with? Just wondering. How about A-Rod?

Here.

“No, I haven’t talked to anybody,‘’ he said, "but I’ll ask anybody. Whenever I see a third baseman, I’m going to ask a question. I not going to just ask the guys who are superstars."

He’s the guy that put it out there that he’d call Cal & A-Rod to pick their brains. And he still hasn’t done it. I just think that’s flakey.

I think

And this is all based on memory so I could be wrong, but at Miggi’s press conference someone asked him if he was going to talk to Cal or A-Rod or anyone and he was like, “sure, sure.” He didn’t volunteer it. What was he gonna say?

"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."

That's how I remember it, too

It got spun as “He’s gonna work so hard! He’s gonna call these hall of famers! He’s the ultimate team player!” and I was all like “VOMIT!”

Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

classic.

classic schmuck stupidity:

Give Tejada credit for being a little more analytical than the media in this case. Though it might be nice to get some advice from the guys who switched to third base late in their careers, it might make more sense to talk to guys who have played the position all their lives.

Um, no.

Let’s get “analytical”, Schmucky. Which makes more sense? Asking someone how to play third base (and getting a justifiably stupid look in return)? Or asking a guy who’s moved from SS to 3B (and therefore successfully done exactly what you’re trying to do) what was his hardest adjustment in making the switch (and maybe actually getting something useful in response).
