It makes me happy to read about Cabrera and Loewen
and know they are somebody else’s problem.
I still root for Loewen
He was talented just rushed and the injuries killed him. I dont blame him for leaving for Toronto when he had the chance. You’ve gotta respect someone that is willing to go back to the bottom and start again at something. He could have easily just left baseball and lived on his millions but he didn’t.

Wasn't he supposed to resign for the Orioles and went back on some informal agreement after he was released?
That would be my only reason for not really wanting to see him succeed, otherwise i couldnt care less. I’m pretty sure the Orioles were fully behind his switch to a position player, and had to release him in order to send him down to the minors. Then once he go this release, he jumped ship and signed with Toronto. Someone correct me if im wrong.
you're correct
But still, he wanted to live near home. I cant blame the guy, we were going to release him if he didnt anyways. He didnt do anything rediculous.

And its not like i spend anytime actively rooting for him to fail, but its just hard to support him after that.

props for spelling "forte" correctly. ;)
"I doubt he could reach [second base]...mostly cuz his fucking arm was in Aybar's nuts." – twistedlogic
The real trick is apparently pronouncing it correctly.
I’ve heard that it’s really supposed to be pronounced “fort” (as in McHenry) rather than “for-tay” (as in the musical term for loud). I don’t know anybody who pronounces it the former way, though.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
i used to pronounce it the wrong way
and then my wife corrected me about 5,000 times & cured me.

dictionary.com has is both ways
when you click the little “listen to” icon. I think I’ll continue to say “for-tay” because I don’t think anyone would understand what I meant if I said “fort.” Maybe that’s an indication that I should stop using the word altogether.
I think that's one of those things
where even if saying it “fort” is technically correct, 99.9% of the people who hear you say it that way will assume you’re saying it incorrectly, so you may as well just say it the other way.
NO. DON'T GIVE IN TO THEIR IGNORANCE

I have nothing against either of them
and I wish them well—elsewhere. Although I confess that if Adam suprises us all and actually succeeds as a major league hitter—in our division—I will be pissed. I’ll also be more than a little annoyed if D-Cabs hits one of ours with a 96 mph fastball the direction of which he had only the vaguest idea when he threw it.

got my spring training tickets today!!
spring training here i come. im going to be at the march 25th game and the march 28th game. anyone else going to be there?
No
But I will be at this Sunday’s game if anyone else is attending. Please don’t let it be Alfredo Simon’s day to pitch…
I think you might be in trouble
It’s Guthrie today, Matusz tomorrow, Tillman Friday, and Millwood Saturday. Bergy isn’t ready to pitch in a game yet so it’ll probably be a scrub.
"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."
AAAARGH!
I saw Eaton or hill probably 5 of the 8 or so games I went to last year. Please don’t let my trend of crap pitchers continue into this year.
There is like a 55% chance I'll end up in Florida this weekend
if I do I’ll definitely see Tillman on Friday night and Millwood on Saturday, so it won’t be a huge loss if I have to watch Simon on Sunday. Wish I could see Matusz though.
"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."
I wouldn't mind seeing one of his starts
Granted, I do have his first start on a scorecard. And I have a note written about 5 months after that saying “TJ surgery, this guy is probably gone forever”

Atkins is certainly the biggest question mark this spring.
He was signed as a “corner infielder” and everyone assumed our 3B placeholder until Tejada signed. Then he was shuffled over to 1B where he played before getting to the Rockies. Helton blocked him there, so he became a 3B. Anyway, Atkins is 30 yrs old. Not “on the wrong side of 30”. He had a so-so year in ‘08 and a bad year in ’09. If he and Crowley can’t revive his batting by May, I suspect he will be done. If that’s the case, we will see Snyder, Aubrey or Hughes at 1B in Baltimore. BUT…. predicting and projecting what we will get out of Garrett Atkins this year is not productive or useful. He and Crowley are going to try to fix his stroke and we are simply going to have to wait to see if it works. I have no problem with waiting since our alternatives are limited at this point. I don’t care about fantasy baseball rosters, so I’m willing to be somewhat patient and see how it goes. I’m convinced his fielding will be just fine. He has played there before and some say he is more natural there anyway. If he hits, he is a good sign. If not, we go on to plan “A” a little earlier than we thought. That’s all.
Predicting and projecting what we will get out of anyone this year is not productive or useful.
We’re fans. What else exactly are we supposed to be doing right now?
well in a sense, i agree with fudd
we spend ridiculous amounts of time telling ourselves that guys like atkins are going to suck before he’s even played.
by twistedlogic on Mar 3, 2010 10:20 AM EST up reply actions
Well he sucked last year
and he’s had declining production the last three.
Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait for baseball season to start so we have something else to talk about. But in the meantime, like Dave said, what else should we do right now?
"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."
bask in the warmth of the knowledge that we still have a few more weeks before watching atkins and wiggy hack full-time
by twistedlogic on Mar 3, 2010 10:29 AM EST up reply actions
Well yea, I see the point
but that’s what we do as fans. If we all just sat around waiting for things to play out we’d have nothing to do all winter. It’s useless, but it’s just entertainment.
The only thing more productive
than debating how players will do this season would be for me to do actual work…so I’ll continue enjoying this distraction until we get some box scores (later today!)
I was really hoping the broadcast options would to include a few Armed Forces Radio - Europe games
So I could start getting up at 3:30 to listen— y’know, training for the regular season.
Did I mention that west coast night games rock?

4 was definitely the most emotional for me, but the overall plot of 3 was just amazing.

they’re both fine, there’s a real fall-off after 4. the political campaign in 3 was ridiculously unrealistic at times.

Just wondering. If you hate it, you hate it, obviously. But I couldn’t even get through it the first time. The writers and actors were just so good in season one that it seemed a disservice to leave those plots. But after I’d gone back and re-watched I found it to be very good.

well even the radio friendly gorillaz songs are great

From the Land of Pleasant Living...
ESPN.com's new blog (called TMI) loves Brad Bergesen.
It’s Insider-only, but some highlights:
His 3.43 ERA was the lowest by an Orioles starter in his first big-league season since Mike Mussina in 1991 (min. 10 starts).
…
Bergesen was 7-1 at home with a 2.68 ERA, the lowest by an O’s starter (min. 10 starts) since Mussina’s 2.65 mark in 1992, the park’s inaugural season.
I don’t think they’re saying he’ll be as good as Moose, but regardless, his rookie season was really, really good. The article is very bullish on him, even if it makes a bit of fun over the whole commercial fiasco.

And this is all based on memory so I could be wrong, but at Miggi’s press conference someone asked him if he was going to talk to Cal or A-Rod or anyone and he was like, “sure, sure.” He didn’t volunteer it. What was he gonna say?

classic schmuck stupidity:
Give Tejada credit for being a little more analytical than the media in this case. Though it might be nice to get some advice from the guys who switched to third base late in their careers, it might make more sense to talk to guys who have played the position all their lives.
Um, no.
Let’s get “analytical”, Schmucky. Which makes more sense? Asking someone how to play third base (and getting a justifiably stupid look in return)? Or asking a guy who’s moved from SS to 3B (and therefore successfully done exactly what you’re trying to do) what was his hardest adjustment in making the switch (and maybe actually getting something useful in response).
