I hope that Moeller stays with the Orioles so that he can work with the young pitchers in Norfolk. At age 35, he is ready to make the transition from player to coach. He will be an excellent coach and possibly a manager some day.

Question: Is MLB.com WORKING this year? I mean, before I buy it again, I want somebody to say YUP, works great now!
Or maybe “Hey, it doesn’t suck as bad as last year!” (Which is certainly true of the Orioles, I’m thinking!)
MLB.com was pretty much unwatchable in ‘09, and it wasn’t b/c I was 10,000 miles away, either. Basically, the constant stop-freezing made it a radio site for me.

I think Tatum is the right move
But I think it has less to do with any real difference in how the O’s will perform when he plays, and more to do with the future of the club.
First of all, Tatum is on the 40-man roster, and keeping two spots for backup catchers is silly, so if Moeller makes the team, Tatum would have to be waived. Second, a major goal is going to be to keep Wieters in the lineup as much as possible, which means that he should be the DH more often than last season, so catcher defense means more. But lastly, this is a move with an eye towards 2011 and beyond. Moeller’s mentoring abilities, such as they are, will be less and less useful as time goes on, while Tatum is under control for six seasons and has time to build a real rapport with our staff. Quality backup catchers don’t grow on trees and often get paid millions. Having a chance to solidify a bench spot that should only be more important since our starting catcher is one of our key players is one that I’m glad to see the O’s jump on. And while I hope Moeller goes to Norfolk, I think the trade last week for Lerud from the Royals was a sign that the O’s are prepared if he won’t.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
True, but
Norfolk could still use him to mentor Tillman, Arrieta, Erbe, etc. Moeller has a LOT of experience. Check out this NYT article on him and some notable pitchers he’s caught in his career. Here’s the best quote about Mussina:
I only caught Moose once. I don’t know if that was because of me or just because he and Jose Molina did so well together. The only game I caught for him was against Boston, and I don’t know if he made it through more than two innings. Hit the first batter of the game. I went out there at one point and he goes, "You want to pitch?" I said: "I’m not having much fun back here, either. But at least I have a mask on." I think I had just thrown a pitch out into center field. It wasn’t going very well. He was giving up shot after shot. We didn’t match up after that.
If I was AM, I would have kept him up and sent Tatum down, or I’d offer Moeller major league money to catch in the minors. I won’t blame him if he leaves if he can find a spot on a big league roster. Then again, I didn’t understand why they let ZAUN go last year either.
Matt Wieters has a sustainably high BABIP
we let go of ZAUN because Andy liked who we got in return.
The name escapes me, but he’s been pretty good this spring.

It seems like a pointless salary dump to me, but I hope to be proven wrong.
Matt Wieters has a sustainably high BABIP
It was a good article...
…but like I said, the 40-man roster problem I think was the determining factor.
Meanwhile, I was under the impression we let Zaun go because he was complaining about his role as Wieters’ backup, claiming he had signed while being given another impression of what his playing time would be.
Meanwhile, he’s my take on intangibles: everyone has them. They may be different for different guys, but I don’t think that Tatum lacks pluck and attention to detail and a good memory either. There are very few big league catchers who don’t have a book on the pitchers they’ve caught or the opposing batters. The difference is that some are better interview subjects than others.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Is anyone else amused
by the Orioles hesitance to pitch their starters against the Red Sox, Yankees, and Rays? Like Boston has no idea who Kevin Millwood is or what kind of stuff he’s got. And did you see that their sending Lester out against us today? Those idiots! Now we’ll get a really good read on him and clobber him in the regular season!
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
I kinda like it, personally
It tells the team, “Hey, we’re not giving away info on our best guys.”
Sure, there’s plenty of tape. But why give a sneak-previe a week before the season starts? We’re not just gonna forfeit games. You gotta earn a win against us, and we’re not going to do anything to give you any more advantage than you already have.
I think it’s more a message to our own players than an effective tactic, but I like it.

I don't like Hernandez as a starter
I think Tillman will be back in May, maybe to replace Guthrie. I have no problem with sending Tillman to AAA to work on control, a cutter and his slide step. To me, David Hernandez should be the middle reliever and Berken the starter because I think next year that will be their proper placement. I think Berken should start and eventually be traded as a starter. Hernandez I think would be an excellent reliever.
Why do you think Berken is better suited for being a starter than DH?
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
I really don't care too much about our backup catcher.
Whatever. Moeller was a good guy and a mentor. Good guys who aren’t very good are cut every day. Kevin Millar got cut too. So what? We have a couple of good catchers in the minors: Joseph and Ohlman. Catching isn’t our biggest problem. Moeller may go to Norfolk to help prepare our young pitchers. Good use of the “mentor”. If he can catch on somewhere else to prolong his playing back up for another year,….. fine.
The biggest weakness of this franchise is not catchers or even pitching anymore. This team doesn’t have middle infielders and doesn’t seem to care. Roberts is fine, when healthy, but that’s not guaranteed. Our shortstops are weak hitters and the minors are no help either. Other teams find them in the Dominican, but not the Orioles.
People keep complaining
About our weakness in the infield but look at it this way, our whole team sucked and now our outfield, catcher and pitching appears to be in solid shape. No team is dominant at every position. Quick fixes are not the answer, give it some more time and our infield may improve. If it doesnt then complain, until then get over it.

I'm not advocating a quick fix.
What I would like to see is a serious effort by the warehouse to draft or sign some legitimate middle infielders. They are out there. The Angels seem to find them easily. Middle infielders aren’t simply going to improve out of hoping they do. They need to be scouted, drafted and/or signed.
hoes and givens are both MI projects
Both represent legit talents taken in the first 5 rounds. You can only add so many at a time but if you consistently add them yearly you can get a good pipeline going. They need to keep drafting high upside MI’s but I expect them to. Esp SS because you can eventually solve 3B and 2B just by having a bunch of SS prospects.

it used to piss me off when you would bring this up but now it’s just funny.
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
I really don't give a damn if it pisses you off or not.
The Orioles still don’t have a decent shortstop in the entire organization. Izturis can’t hit. Andino can’t hit. Turner can’t play shortstop. Blake Davis is our top AAA shortstop. Florimon is at AA. Givens is a HS pitcher that has played some shortstop, but doesn’t seem interested. Hoes is being converted INTO a second baseman. Other organizations at least have a plan. The Orioles do not.
So what????
Does that mean we should draft a SS ahead of a better pitcher or 1B??? You don’t draft for your goddamn needs! You draft the best fuckin’ player available and then figure it out from there. It’s not that hard. If they need a SS after this year they can package some spare pitchers for one.
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
They have needed a shortstop for a long time.
If it were as easy as you make it sound, why are the Orioles totally bereft of any? If they can trade a spare pitcher for a good shortstop prospect somewhere near the majors, I wish they would simply do it. They haven’t had a decent shortstop for years! Let’s get one now.
What are you talking about?
They have one of the 3 best defensive shortstops in the game. You think having an offensive shortstop is what’s preventing them from competing?? Why do they need one right now???
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
You may recall that not too long ago...
…I did a study of the origins of the best shortstops in 2009 here. There were only seven shortstops with over 3.5 WAR in all of baseball last season.
It is the hardest position to fill on a major league roster. Almost no team in baseball has a top shortstop. If it was easy to get one, we would have done it by now.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
And again
who gives a shit about having an offensive weapon at SS? This reminds me a lot of the argument about whether somebody’s “bat plays at first base.” Who cares?? If you have good players at most of the positions and good pitching you’ll be a good team. If you’re weak spots are at SS or 1B or RF it just doesn’t matter that much (as long as you’re not weak defensively at SS – and we certainly aren’t). So…who gives a shit?
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
Well, I care
I’ve written about this here before, but having a quality two-way shortstop is one of the fastest ways to build an above-average offense. The gap between the Jeters of the world and the average shortstop is huge, much bigger than the gap between Miguel Cabrera and the average first baseman, for example. This is a huge part of what makes Mauer or Wieters so valuable – because it isn’t just that they are good hitters, but because the gap between them and the average backstop is so great.
It isn’t a coincidence that the Yankees have Jeter and make the playoffs a lot. Nor is it a coincidence that the Rockies have made it two of the last three years with Tulo, or that the Marlins spend bupkus and continue to contend due to Hanley, or that the Mets have always been in the playoff hunt with a healthy Reyes. Of course those players don’t add up to an above-average offense on their own, but they make building an above-average offense much, much easier.
But like I said, if it was easy, everyone would do it.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Focus on the aggregate
Is the team’s aggregate OBP above league average? It doesn’t matter where the numbers come from – we have a catcher who will vastly outperform the league, so we can afford slightly lower production at SS as a result.
Focus on the aggregate. As a team, we need to get more men on base and drive in more runs. Doesn’t matter who drives them in.
"The moment you stop thinking you're the best, it's time for you to get out the game." -'King' Mo Lawal
Right - this is the thing I don't get about this ridiculous argument.
It seems so obvious that it’s the aggregate and that it doesn’t matter where it comes from…
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
I think I am focusing on the aggregate
All I’m saying is that the second most efficient way to improve the aggregate is to have a quality two-way shortstop (I checked, it ranks second after catcher). That doesn’t mean that we focus on short and not on the offense as a whole, but it does mean that improving at shortstop will have a bigger impact on the aggregate than improving at first base.
That said, above league average won’t cut it. We’re competing with the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays. We have to be among the best in the league to beat them. And that has to be the goal.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Well right
but look at the O’s – as Duck said we have a catcher who should blow the rest of the league at that position out of the water. And throw in that we should have better production from our 3 OF spots than almost every other team. Doesn’t that buy us some wiggle room at SS??? If it doesn’t then I’m not following the argument…
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
Sure we have wiggle room
Although I dunno about “blow out of the water” – V-Mart and Posada have consistently been among the best backstops in the game as well.
I’m not panicking, or having some big argument here. Nor am I saying that we should draft some second round talent with the #3 pick just because he plays short. But scarcity matters. Having an above average shortstop is a huge advantage that we could have over other teams. So, to the extent that we can without detriment to our other goals, we should be trying to get one.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Come on man. Posada is 38 years old (turning 39 this year)! How much longer do you think he’s going to be among the best backstops in the game??? VMart is basically a half-time catcher at this point.
I’m fine with your second paragraph, but I still think the idea that we should go into the draft targeting a SS is silly. You draft the best player available every time you pick and that’s that.
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
Again...
Who is the best SS in the AL? Jeter? Offensively you’d have to give it to him. Who else in the AL has anything super special at the position? Hanley Ramirez is definitely an abberation at the position. I think we were spoiled by having Cal all those years then watching A-rod, Jeter, and Nomar all coming up at the same time. The guys just aren’t out there and they are definitely not easily found in the draft.
Well, in 2009...
…the best AL shortstops were Jeter, Bartlett, and Scutaro, who all unfortunately are in our division.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Well that tends to be the problem
Our division is loaded and as a result of the easy comparison alot of fans tend to think we just arent trying. Truth is our division is stacked and we just have to make due with less. I’m perfectly happy with a defense-first ss though, especially if we can fill our holes at 1st and 3rd (which are much easier holes to fill).
But again who gives a shit?
if they have better players at SS and we have better players at CF, what difference does it make at all? Izturis is better than any of those guys defensively, so as long as we get that production some place else I don’t see how it matters.
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
As I said above...
…I think it is a rational concern. But there is only so much that can be done about it.
Would I like to see the O’s do more? Absolutely. But I don’t know what they know either.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
And furthermore
name me an organization that has a good prospect at every position and 5 starting pitchers. That’s just not the way you build an organization – it doesn’t matter if you have a good prospect for every single slot. That’s what free agency, trades, and international signings are for.

but maybe it’s better that you didn’t. It wasn’t anything super mean. I just thought you were joking. They had similar stats last season, but VMart’s average draft position in AL only drafts is 11th, while Young’s is 52nd. Position scarsity also plays a large part in that, but it is possible that they put up similar fantasy point totals this year.
I compared them
their one year stats and their three years stats, and Young scored more fantasy points than Martinez in both.
I got the reject in the email but there wasn’t a comment included in it. Maybe CBSSports is trying to spare my feelings.
This just in: adorableness on the rise, family copes with child getting schooled. Film at 11. -daveh873
Nah I had emailed you seperately
But yea, VMart played alot less games so he scored less fantasy points (he only played in 73 games in 08), but Boston is more focused on getting him AB’s at 1st and DH to keep his bat in the lineup, so he’ll probably outperform those numbers.
Also, congrats on the centsport bet! If I were you i’d tank one on purpose to get back up to 10 cents though. Alot easier then getting there with 1 cent bets.

Jim Callis re:the Orioles 5th starter
“I think it’s silly that decisions are made on spring-training performance, especially when both guys worked about 15 innings each. But it doesn’t matter in the long run. Tillman is much more talented, and Hernandez is destined for middle relief. The Orioles weren’t going to win this year anyway, and Tillman will be in their rotation before the all-star break.”
Thanks for making me not feel like a complete idiot for once, Jim!

addressing the whole "run on the backup catcher" deal...
being a current high school catcher and an avid disciple of the position, i thought id offer my two cents. the way I see it is there is no right answer. take into account the freshness of a backup catcher. the starters arm is bound to wear down during the course of the season and trust me, that throw to second is an absolute killer with a sore arm. of course, these are major league training staffs we’re dealing with so maybe it’s not such a big deal. even though the backup is, well, a backup, he may do a couple of things (like, saaaay throw out runners?) better than the starter. and remember, it’s not ALL about the catcher. the pitcher plays a pivotal role in setting the whole thing up.

iPad is available in retail stores on Saturday.
iPad = epic fail. I mean come on! It’s just a bigger version of the iPhone, and it can’t even run multiple apps. No USB ports. Doesn’t support flash. Seriously, what is this piece of junk? How can it qualify as a computer?
Complaining is good for you as long as you're not complaining to the person you're complaining about. - Lynn Johnston (I don't know who that is...but it's a good quote.)
it's not a computer
it’s an iPad.
Wall St Journal seems to think it may be okay, which surprised me. I thought it would get panned, but

It's probably going to be a huge success
Personally not interested, but lots of people are. Early reviews seem positive, but iPad doesn’t look like a productivity device, which is what I would want. I’m waiting for something like the Microsoft Courier, which looks to be an incredible platform for creativity. But who knows if that will ever see the light of day.
Here’s a good iPad review by the inimitable David Pogue: techies will find lots to complain about, normal people will probably love it.
Read, then think again.

He’s already majorly praised many of the apps, which is making me kind of want to go out and buy one, but I’ll probably hold back until they add at least a few more features. But it’s not exactly meant to be a replacement for a computer…
