Chris Tillman makes his first start tonight and will be followed by Jim Johnson and Alfredo Simon, among others. The Pittsburgh Pirates will counter with Zach Duke, Daniel McCutchen, Virgil Vasquez, Evan Meek, (the other) Javier Lopez and Jeremy Powell.

Weird line.

2BB but no H or K? I can’t tell what to think of that.

Don’t feel too bad; hopefully we won’t have to root against him for long.

Iwamura grounds back to Tillman, Tabata fouls a few off before SO on a high fastball, Jones SO (fastball, I think).

So far, so good.

Doumit K’s on checkswing after 3-1 count (not sure if swinging or looking), Pearce grounds to 3B, Moss flies to RF on a 3-2 pitch.

Sounds like Tillman’s curve is catching the corners very well, and he got 0-2 counts on Pearce and Moss.

Turner just has a bruise, apparently.

Tom Davis

just said that MacPhail prefers a lefty closer because of all the power hitting left-handed sluggers in the AL East.

I count Cano, Drew, Ortiz, Pena, and Lind.

So…uh…there are more right handed or switch-hitting sluggers in the division:

ARod, Teixeira, Hill, Longoria, Zobrist, Martinez, and Youkilis.

What am I missing here?

Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

by Andrew_G on Mar 5, 2010 7:47 PM EST reply actions

I have strong doubts that MacPhail actually said that

I mean, I’m not calling Tom Davis a straight up liar, but come on. Andy MacPhail is no dummy.

"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."

by Stacey on Mar 5, 2010 7:48 PM EST up reply actions

That's what I thought

I mean, there’s no way a guy half as smart as MacPhail would make that kind of judgment.

But I thought maybe there was some obvious power hitting threats maybe I forgot about?

Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

by Andrew_G on Mar 5, 2010 7:49 PM EST up reply actions

I mean

Matsui and Damon are gone. Teixeira is a switch hitter but doesn’t have a weak side, neither does Posada really.

Crawford is a lefty but I wouldn’t call him a slugger. Travis Snider is a lefty but he’s just a future slugger.

I’d rather

"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."

by Stacey on Mar 5, 2010 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

Well for Red Sox

jd drew, ortiz. Yanks added granderson who hasn’t been great against lefties.
I think the real point is that lefties who can close generally aren’t weak against righties while some closers do have significant platoon splits against lefties. With so many switch hitters that’s probably more important

by OsandRoyals on Mar 5, 2010 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

for elite closers

the difference doesn’t really matter with nathan’s k/BB ration being “only” 3.5 instead of 4.7 for 2009. Papelbon too has a split against lefties. I think it’s mainly a matter of not being stacked against with so many switch hitters in the AL East

Mike Gonzalez in.

Cedeno singles on a pop-up to 1B (wish I were kidding; the wind caught it).
Walker walks after Davis overruns a foul pop-up.
Cedeno steals third (Manfra said it was on Gonzo).
Raynor K’s on a 3-2 high fastball.
Iwamura singles up the middle to tie it; Walker goes to second.
Tabata pops up to shallow CF.
Jones grounds to 2B.

Tied 1-1. Gonzalez’s control didn’t seem great; he seemed to keep missing up and away.

Moeller in for Wieters. Arrieta pitching (good stuff; didn’t know that was happening).

Walker gets to 3-2 and walks again. (I’d much rather have a hitter with that name than a pitcher.)
Walker steals second. Good throw by Moeller, close play, but safe.
Raynor singles on a grounder to LF. Walker to third.
Iwamura K’s swinging.
Tabata walks. Bases loaded…
Jones grounds out to 1B, scoring Walker. Men on second and third.
Doumit K’s swinging.

Tied at 2.

I wish Davis were spending more time describing the pitching and less time rehashing and talking about Arrieta vying for the rotation. About all that Manfra said was that Arrieta did not look sharp.
