GameThread: Pirates @ Orioles, 7:05 p.m.
It's Friday night and I've got a hot date with Joe Angel. Of course Fred Manfra will also be hanging around, third wheel that he is.

Chris Tillman makes his first start tonight and will be followed by Jim Johnson and Alfredo Simon, among others. The Pittsburgh Pirates will counter with Zach Duke, Daniel McCutchen, Virgil Vasquez, Evan Meek, (the other) Javier Lopez and Jeremy Powell.

Steve Johnson
He pitched okay today: 2IP 0H 2BB 0ER
I feel kind of bad rooting against him.
"Hey Yankees... you can take your apology and your trophy and shove 'em straight up your ass!" --Tanner Boyle
Weird line.
2BB but no H or K? I can’t tell what to think of that.
Don’t feel too bad; hopefully we won’t have to root against him for long.

I did a double-take when I saw Iwamura under "Pirates".
Izzy and Turner are out for Andino and Davis; dunno if you want to fix that.

Everyone, go to 104.7 wpgb to listen to the game. They are broadcasting it. Unfortunately it isn’t Joe Angel.

Iwamura grounds back to Tillman, Tabata fouls a few off before SO on a high fastball, Jones SO (fastball, I think).
So far, so good.

Bottom 1
Jones grounds out (to 3B, I think), Andino flies out to CF, Markakis K’s on a high fastball.

Wow, Miggy with a barehanded throw
He’s taking to 3rd like a fish to water.

Doumit K’s on checkswing after 3-1 count (not sure if swinging or looking), Pearce grounds to 3B, Moss flies to RF on a 3-2 pitch.
Sounds like Tillman’s curve is catching the corners very well, and he got 0-2 counts on Pearce and Moss.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.

Bottom 2
Double to CF by Miggy, Wieters flies to CF but moves Miggy over, Luke (you could hear a Luuuuke cheer) gets a sac fly to RF, Atkins gets to 3-2 and bloops a single to CF, Tucker grounds to 3B.
Turner just has a bruise, apparently.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
Atkins hit was a blooper?
Oh well. Normally I would say Spring only matters for pitchers, not hitter but, I think it would be nice if Atkins had a decent spring at the plate.

Hello kids
Garrett Atkins very impressive in the field, wouldn’t you say?
"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."
Tom Davis
just said that MacPhail prefers a lefty closer because of all the power hitting left-handed sluggers in the AL East.
I count Cano, Drew, Ortiz, Pena, and Lind.
So…uh…there are more right handed or switch-hitting sluggers in the division:
ARod, Teixeira, Hill, Longoria, Zobrist, Martinez, and Youkilis.
What am I missing here?
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
I have strong doubts that MacPhail actually said that
I mean, I’m not calling Tom Davis a straight up liar, but come on. Andy MacPhail is no dummy.
"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."
That's what I thought
I mean, there’s no way a guy half as smart as MacPhail would make that kind of judgment.
But I thought maybe there was some obvious power hitting threats maybe I forgot about?
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
I mean
Matsui and Damon are gone. Teixeira is a switch hitter but doesn’t have a weak side, neither does Posada really.
Crawford is a lefty but I wouldn’t call him a slugger. Travis Snider is a lefty but he’s just a future slugger.
I’d rather
"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."
It's cool
it just made me stop for a second and think “no way that’s true”.
/not a tom davis fan
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
that was going to say before Jones hit the HR and I had to stop typing
I’d rather MacPhail just say, “It doesn’t matter to us if he’s a lefty or righty because he gets everyone out.”
"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."
Well for Red Sox
jd drew, ortiz. Yanks added granderson who hasn’t been great against lefties.
I think the real point is that lefties who can close generally aren’t weak against righties while some closers do have significant platoon splits against lefties. With so many switch hitters that’s probably more important
for elite closers
the difference doesn’t really matter with nathan’s k/BB ration being “only” 3.5 instead of 4.7 for 2009. Papelbon too has a split against lefties. I think it’s mainly a matter of not being stacked against with so many switch hitters in the AL East
aj, dino
you have to call for the ball guys
this is little league stuff

Mike Gonzalez in.
Cedeno singles on a pop-up to 1B (wish I were kidding; the wind caught it).
Walker walks after Davis overruns a foul pop-up.
Cedeno steals third (Manfra said it was on Gonzo).
Raynor K’s on a 3-2 high fastball.
Iwamura singles up the middle to tie it; Walker goes to second.
Tabata pops up to shallow CF.
Jones grounds to 2B.
Tied 1-1. Gonzalez’s control didn’t seem great; he seemed to keep missing up and away.

That's true, now that I think about it
So it’s not a strict rule, but the overwhelming majority of pitchers are butt-ugly trolls. For every Mike Mussina there’s Adam Eaton and AJ Burnett and James Shields and Sidney Ponson and John Lackey (what is wrong with your faaaaaaaaaace?) and on and on

Moeller in for Wieters. Arrieta pitching (good stuff; didn’t know that was happening).
Walker gets to 3-2 and walks again. (I’d much rather have a hitter with that name than a pitcher.)
Walker steals second. Good throw by Moeller, close play, but safe.
Raynor singles on a grounder to LF. Walker to third.
Iwamura K’s swinging.
Tabata walks. Bases loaded…
Jones grounds out to 1B, scoring Walker. Men on second and third.
Doumit K’s swinging.
Tied at 2.
I wish Davis were spending more time describing the pitching and less time rehashing and talking about Arrieta vying for the rotation. About all that Manfra said was that Arrieta did not look sharp.

I usually buy CL out of habit, but haven’t been exactly enjoying it lately. Might be time for a switch.

I bought a super cute Markakis tee tonight
It caught my eye in the Modells so I figured what the hell. I’m very pleased with it. I hope it’s warm enough on OD for me to wear it.

Is there ANY other kind?

"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."
I stopped at the mall on my way home to get a few things
such as the Markakis shirt and there were a billion people all dressed up for this movie. Why are people so weird?
"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."
yea
i remember all of the ppl dressed as pirates for the 3rd POC movie and in star wars shit for revenge of the sith
I bought it at Modells
Give me a second and I’ll find the website where I found that picture.
"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."
Here you go
But if you have Modells near you I’d just go there. They had a ton.
"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."

until he gave up that HR

That apparently went into the Gulf of Mexico from the description

the lengths people will go to to avoid Fred Manfra
"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."
You know, I normally don't dislike Fred as much as some others do
but the combination of him and Davis makes him pretty insufferable.

I like Fred all right normally.
But Joe Angel is simply awesome, I think I just I don’t notice Manfra’s shortfalls when he’s there. Davis can’t cover him.
"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."
also Fred just seems a mess tonight
“I can’t read my notes, quite honestly.”
"It feels like home,’’ Pie said. "All my friends are here."
Not well, either.
