Brittany Ghiroli tells us Troy Patton spent a lot of time in the off-season preparing himself for an injury-free season, but manages to avoid telling us he's in the best shape of his life. Garrett Atkins is one of the best hitters on the team.

by Philly O's on Mar 8, 2010 7:19 AM EST reply actions

I've been doing some reading

and some other work, and it seems like Atkins’ problem isn’t going to be making contact, but rather that he just can’t drive the ball anymore. Which means that there’ll be doubles past the third baseman, but probably not a lot of home runs, and probably a lot more lazy fly balls.

So, setting aside that it’s the completely irrelevant Spring Training, Atkins still hasn’t shown that he can drive the ball like, say, Nick Markakis can. Or even Felix Pie can.

Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

by Andrew_G on Mar 8, 2010 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

Atkins without power but a decent OBP I can deal with

Not like he will be batting cleanup. But a #7 hitter with a decent OBP? I can deal with that.

Decent for a #7 hitter

not decent for a first baseman in the AL East

Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

by Andrew_G on Mar 8, 2010 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

Who cares about that?

We don’t play the games in isolated head to head position battles. If we have a better OF than anybody else we can afford to have a weaker 1B than other teams.

by O'sFan21 on Mar 8, 2010 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

I suppose

but if Atkins puts up like a .340 OBP (which would top both 2009 and 2008 for him!), he would like 25th in all of baseball in terms of first basemen OBP! I’m not sure that the outfield is that much better than every other team that the Orioles can afford it if they’re really serious about wins and losses this year.

On the other hand, a .340 OBP would beat the shit out of what we got from the position last year. Which is just really, really sad. That said, I don’t think Atkins can put up an OBP as high as .340.

Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

by Andrew_G on Mar 8, 2010 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

But again

who cares where he ranks in terms of first basemen? How would that rank in terms of 7th hitters is what I care about.

by O'sFan21 on Mar 8, 2010 12:11 PM EST up reply actions

Really the question is

how does the entire offense rank compared to everyone else’s offense, and then what fraction of that is Atkins and then could the Orioles do better by replacing him. And while I think the answer to the first question is “Quite well indeed”, I’m guessing that the answer to the second question “Not that much” and then finally “Um. Most probably.”

Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

by Andrew_G on Mar 8, 2010 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

Eh

I’m just not too worried about our 7 hitter in terms of our success this year. We’re not paying him very much and it’s a short contract, so whatever. The guys who will be standing about 64 feet from him on the bump will matter a lot more.

by O'sFan21 on Mar 8, 2010 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

Not to beat a dead horse

really, but I’m bored and here’s the splits from the number 7 hitters in the AL East in 2009:

The Yankees obviously had the best production at .294/.361/.501
Then Boston at .266/.342/.464
Then Toronto at .253/.345/.444
Then Tampa Bay at .265/.331/.409

So if you just want to compare Garret Atkins to that crowd, I still don’t think you’ve got a winning hand.

Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

by Andrew_G on Mar 8, 2010 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

Good deal

that’s a much better argument than the tired “his bat doesn’t play at 1B” crap.

by O'sFan21 on Mar 8, 2010 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

No

But i’m not compairing him to them because he isn’t our long term solution. He is here until we figure out our long term solution thankfully and thats it.

Not sure I understand what you're "reading" ?

Give Atkins (and Crowley) a chance to rebuild his swing. It is spring training. The guy has gotten a few hits. Chill!!!! If he isn’t hitting by May, then you can dump on him. Until then, give the man a chance. It’s not like we have Boog Powell as an alternative.

Have to agree with Schmuck here.. (yeah, I said it.)

The baseball scheduling system sucks. And I don’t know about you all, but I’m over interleague play. I like the novelty of an AL team playing an NL team for the first time during the world series.

by Y Not on Mar 8, 2010 7:32 AM EST reply actions

He does make some solid points....

*Millwood said he’s working on pitches. I’m not worried.

*Hernandez’s HR was wind-blown, by a lot. No way that goes out in an MLB park. And 6K’s? I’ll take it.

*Josh Bell has yet to play an inning at AAA, iirc. Even Wieters played in AAA.

*People whining about ST lineups? Really?

*Sky is falling with Reimold and Roberts? Ask me again April 1st.

Matt Wieters DH
Lou Montanez RF
Cesar Izturis SS
Craig Tatum C

all that playoff talk from 2007

reminds me of all the hope we talk about now, and that troubles me.

by Steve. on Mar 8, 2010 11:00 AM EST reply actions

the hope might be a little bit premature this time around

but I think it’s got a much more solid foundation in reality than in 2007. We’ve really loaded up on quality prospects since then and cut a lot of dead weight. Just look at the difference in the rotation going into ST.

by O'sFan21 on Mar 8, 2010 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah

but that’s exactly what we would have said in 2007!

by Andrew_G on Mar 8, 2010 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think so.

How many of our players were being touted as the best young players in the game (as Wieters and Matusz are)? I don’t think it was even remotely close. We barely even had any prospects going into the 2007 season.

by O'sFan21 on Mar 8, 2010 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah I know

I’m just fucking with you. I think if you look at where the Orioles farm system stood before the 2007 Rule IV Draft and compare that to where the entire organization stands today, it’s not even night and day. It’s like Alpha and Omega, it’s like comparing Charlie Chaplin films to Avatar. Even though MacPhail wasn’t around for that first draft (and I heard rumors that he didn’t like that the Orioles had drafted Wieters), his restructuring and focusing on the young talent through trade and draft has really, genuinely made this team worth watching.

But com’on. We’re Oriole fans. We’re supposed to be fatalistic.

Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

by Andrew_G on Mar 8, 2010 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

Oh there's definitely

still a part of me that thinks this is all never going to materialize, but you’re right it’s beyond night and day compared to 2007.

by O'sFan21 on Mar 8, 2010 11:56 AM EST up reply actions

Seriously

in 2007 we had two guys in the top 100 lists. You probably recognize them. Brandon Erbe and (get ready to cringe) Billy Rowell. In a word: fuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

Oh yeah, and the major league team had Markakis, and that was It in terms of talented players under 28 years old.

Now we have three top 100 prospects and a team with Matusz, Tillman, Wieters, Reimold, Markakis, Jones, Pie, Bergesen, Mickolio, and Johnson. Although the farm system ranks somewhere around 26th now, but I’m going to enjoy I think reaping the fruits of that 3 years in the making labor.

Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

by Andrew_G on Mar 8, 2010 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

Is the farm system ranked that low?

I thought somebody just posted something that had it about 16th the other day. I might be confused though.

by O'sFan21 on Mar 8, 2010 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

Well

the current rankings include both Mickolio and Matusz. Matusz is an A prospect, so losing him drags the whole thing waaaaay down.

Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.

by Andrew_G on Mar 8, 2010 12:11 PM EST up reply actions

almost

Klaw had us 6th. Matusz will graduate but we will add another top prospect with the 3rd pick in the draft in theory. The key will be all our low minors guys developing (aka hoes, avery, givens etc.)

Tim Kurkjian has some nice things to say about us

Yeah, yeah, I’m linking to ESPN. There’s also some video here of him talking to Adam Jones.

Migrating toward respectability

I feel like this paragraph is the greatest example of why times have changed:

With a rotation of Millwood, Guthrie, Matusz, Tillman and Brad Bergesen, who went 7-5 with a 3.43 ERA last year as a rookie, the Orioles have the makings of a good rotation. Compare that to the past decade of losing in Baltimore. A veteran writer in Baltimore was asked to pick the Orioles’ five best starters for the past decade. He chose Bedard, Guthrie, Rodrigo Lopez, Daniel Cabrera and Sidney Ponson. Together they went 248-270 in that span.

Ouch.

Sounded just like articles from the past. When he got to the young guys then it was a different story than past years. Millwood + gonzalez + atkins do not = contending.
