Tuesday Bird Droppings

MacPhail: Roberts won't play for at least a week - baltimoresun.com
Brian Roberts' return from injury keeps getting pushed back. I fear it's going to get pushed right into the beginning of the year. -Stacey

Will defense of Tejada, Atkins hold up for O's? - baltimoresun.com
Andy MacPhail doesn't seem too worried about the corner defense this year. "We think that Garrett and Miguel represented as good as we were going to do on those corners for right-handed hitters," said MacPhail, whose mantra has been to rebuild the Orioles by focusing on pitching and defense. "Miggi has to make the transition from short to third, and I think he's coming along fine. Our reports on Garrett indicate that he's very capable of playing first base." -duck

Orioles: Scott wants to play the field more this year - Carroll County Times
Luke Scott wants more starts as a fielder this year, and he's sounding a bit defensive about it. Yeah, that was on purpose. -duck

Led by Matt Wieters, Adam Jones, Brian Roberts, Orioles have hope - SI.com
Dan Shaughnessy writes an SI column saying how painful it has been to see the decline of the Orioles and "[t]hey need to stop the embarrassment and come back to respectability." We'll get right on that, Dan. -duck

The Top Promotions in MLB for 2010 - Biz of Baseball
"Let’s face it, the Orioles haven’t had much of anything to crow about for some time. But, you can relive the glory days on Saturday, June 27 against the Nationals when they celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1970 World Champions Orioles by having numerous members of the '70 World Series Champs. The following day, the first 20,000 fans 15 and over will receive a 1970 O's 40th Anniversary Cap. Finally, a Hall of Fame Oriole and member of the 1970 Orioles' World Championship team, Brooks Robinson, will be featured in a giveaway on Saturday, July 17. The first 25,000 fans 21 and over will receive a Robinson replica jersey." -duck

O’s spring training: The 25 who will make it (#13) | WNST
Lucky #13 on Drew's list is Felix Pie. Hard to argue, but I'm not a fan of the trade talk. -Stacey

Bergesen to make first start Wednesday | orioles.com: News
It's official, 3E1N is ready to pitch. Let's just hope he doesn't get too flinch-y when the ball gets hit back up the middle. -Stacey

Gonzalez working on adding changeup | orioles.com: News
Orioles closer Michael Gonzalez has been working a changeup back into his repertoire this spring, with the hope that he can use the pitch during the regular season to complement his fastball-slider combo. -Stacey

Vote early and often

If you make a Lollygagger 1 shirt, I’ll buy a few of ’em. Just saying.

by PhilR8 on Mar 9, 2010 7:58 AM EST up reply actions

We haven't figured out how many shirts we're going to make yet

But we’ll just work our way down the list once the voting ends. I love Lollygagger 1, though.

Why Andino's leading off while Angle's batting 8th is beyond me.

I would kill for an "Os before Hos" T-shirt

But alas….

No offense intended here… I just think it would be awesome.

That or something like: "Let me see your “O” face"

Yeah me too

We should def meet up for a pre-game beer on Opening Day, if we can find each other in the giant Pickles crowd anyway.

You think it'll be packed early in the afternoon for the opener?

I’m taking my dad up to the game and was planning on going up real early.

by O'sFan21 on Mar 9, 2010 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

It'll be jam packed.

Last year I believe it was a Monday and there were like 100 porta-potties and lines to all of em. That entire center area was jammed – like not even being able to cut through the crowd without doing the frat-party “excuse me” on your way to the bathroom. As far as actually getting in Pickles, forget about it unless you are earlier than we were (we were about 4 hours early to the game). Buuut, its a great time. Loads of beer and merchandise everywhere.

by Wieters Wieners on Mar 9, 2010 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

wow

I was thinking about getting up there around 1 or 2, but not going to pickles until later, but sounds like that won’t really work…

by O'sFan21 on Mar 9, 2010 11:41 AM EST up reply actions

Im just speaking off what I saw last year...

We were also playing the MFY with Sabathia on the hill too, so who knows if that created more buzz. also….

by Wieters Wieners on Mar 9, 2010 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

Pickles is always super packed on OD

People who aren’t even going to the game go to Pickles. If you’re looking for a place to chill with your dad that isn’t crazy crowded, last year that Diamond Tavern that’s in the base of the new hotel was pretty good. They had tables and some food vendors set up outside and it was a good sized crowd but not jam packed like Pickles.

by Stacey on Mar 9, 2010 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

Hmm

that sounds like it might be more his style. Does Pickles get a bit of a frat party scene going on?

by O'sFan21 on Mar 9, 2010 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

that's a good way to describe it

I met my dad at Pickles for OD a few years ago and I’ll never go there with him again, especially after the strippers hanging out the second floor window started flashing the crowd.

There is also that place next to Pickles in that pretty new apartment building, I think it’s called Frank and Nic’s. I don’t know what their deal is but they have outdoor tables too and last year they were trying to get some OD buzz going about themselves. The bars on Pratt Street like Pratt Street Ale House and The Nest might also be good options for a place with an O’s crowd that isn’t nuts.

hmmm

can’t decide if the prospect of strippers makes it more attractive or less attractive for a visit with my dad…

Orioles better start selecting a 2B and leadoff backup plan

I’ve had herniated and ruptured discs and they don’t “just heal” over time. Roberts may need to have it fixed and that will mean time on the DL. The list of 2B options includes Wigginton, Andino, Turner, Abreu and Moore. They could all play 2B, but only Turner and Moore can draw a walk. None of them are leadoff hitter, really. Abreu isn’t really ready, I assume, and was a real hacker at Bowie. Moore intrigues me as a hitter. Can he play 2B well?

I think I’ll take my medical information from doctors and trainers thanks.

I'm starting to think the Roberts injury is worse than the O's are letting on

It seems to be dragging and dragging. I know they want to take their time with him, but my gut tells me this one is worse than we think.

I like it because, it’s awesome, and unlike the lollygagger one for B-Rob, you don’t have to be a CC’er to understand it. You can wear it OPACY with out anyone asking you why you have lollygagger on your shirt. Alas, it’s to late for the contest.

A few years ago I entertained the thought of having one of those made

You know how on orioles.com you can customize a tee (like I did for the lollygagger picture). I had it all made up and then never ended up buying it. I think that’d be a good idea, though. Perhaps too late for the contest but maybe not too late for consideration.
