GameThread: Rays @ Orioles, 1:05 p.m.
The Rays and O's meet for the third time this spring in only their 7th game. In a year or two when the Orioles are really good and the Rays are really good, sports writers will get all excited about their spring match ups and how it could foreshadow their bitter rivalry during the season. Or something.
Chris Tillman starts for the Orioles; Jeff Niemann for the Rays. Tillman was perfect his last time out, retiring all six batters he faced and striking out three. Niemann has made one appearance this spring, also against the Orioles. In two innings he allowed just one hit, a home run to Felix Pie.
Relievers on deck for the Orioles today are Cla Meredith, Dennis Sarfate, and Alberto Castillo. Scheduled for the Rays: Jeremy Hellickson, Carlos Hernandez, and Randy Choate.
The game will be broadcast on 105.7 The Fan and XM176. If you're near a TV you can watch Stephen Strasburg's Nationals debut on MASN.
Your lineups, courtesy of Britt Ghiroli:

Guess i'm going to have to watch basketball, listen to baseball, and read for class all at the same time
guess which one isn’t going to get done..
I'm watching basketball, listening to baseball, and taking care of my sick son.
guess which one isn’t going to get down..

And today my work computer doesn't want to let gameday work
Why is it so inconsistent? Jerk.

Is Jim Palmer less pompous on the radio?
"Daddy, is Hevan like BIRDLAND?"
"No son, Hevan is BIRDLAND."
God damn
The Nats announcers are annoying. They’re full of the same crappy cliches and dumb generalizations as all other announcers, but the play-by-play guy is extra bland, and Dibble is extra douchey.
by Joltin Joe Orsulak on Mar 9, 2010 1:15 PM EST reply actions
Dibble is ALWAYS extra douchy
It’s ruining my mornings. I had to switch away from Fox Sports Radio when they non-renewed Steve Czaban to pick up Screamin’ A. Smith (can’t stand that dude), and then MLB Network has Dibble on. Mike & Mike isn’t really an option, either, as I need to stay away on my drive to work. 106.7 I can get on my iPhone, but Ed Norris? Please.
Any ideas?

Way to ruin a decent joke on my own….

There's an idea....
"The moment you stop thinking you're the best, it's time for you to get out the game." -'King' Mo Lawal
first of all..
screamin a. smith was funny.. i like that.
second, why is he always so angry?
Can't take credit for that
Probably Jason Whitlock coined that. Don’t remember.

So, Tillman is also following Millwood's mentoring lead, I see
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
Anybody else find that Gameday is extra slow lately?
I’m still waiting for the first pitch (except on the radio)
Just caught up
I wonder if this has anything to do with my internationalness.
If anyone is listening and wants to throw some details my way now and then
I’d appreciate it.

Interesting, Roberts just said he could bat fine from the right today if he needed to
and that it’s only from the left that aggravates the back injury. Hopefully this means he wont have to miss any of the regular season, even if he’s at less than 100% effectiveness.
Depends how ineffective he is from the right against right-handers
Its possible that he’s still a better option offensively than whoever else we could throw out there. This also says nothing about his defensive abilities right now, but it could mean he’s at least a great late-inning pinch hitter for opening day.
Os 3 up 3 down in bottom first
went quietly. dino: GO. Reimold: FO. Nick: LO
O's just went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 1st.

I'm sure Atkins will make up for that in the 2nd

Not watching but it sounds like they're not hitting the ball hard against Tillman.
Seeing-eye single and IF single…
"Daddy, is Hevan like BIRDLAND?"
"No son, Hevan is BIRDLAND."
Longoria had a ball go to the wall over Reimold's head
Reimold isn’t at full speed
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
Sounded like the ball was smoked
He probably wouldnt have had a play at 100%, but he may have recovered better and kept the run form scoring.
Reimold's Achilles moves him to DH
Pie to LF
Luke to 1B
Garrett to the bench
A girl can dream…
This just in: adorableness on the rise, family copes with child getting schooled. Film at 11. -daveh873
I have a hard time seeing Reimold starting the season in left
to be honest. If that achilles isn’t 100% now, it’s not going to get better when he plays on it throughout the spring. I’m not sure who sits if Reimold can’t start in left, though. Pie? Scott? Reimold? Atkins?
I know who it SHOULD be, but I don’t know who it WOULD be.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
I don't know
they way Gary and Dave Johnson were talking on Sunday about Luke getting time in LF if Nolan isn’t 100% made me want to vomit.
This just in: adorableness on the rise, family copes with child getting schooled. Film at 11. -daveh873
That just wouldn't make any sense
of course, it doesn’t make any sense to sit any of those guys except for the one…
and by that I mean the guy who just struck out looking. Way to go there Garret.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
Just have WIETERS spit on it.

the logic is impeccable
I’m not optimistic
Roch says some people in the press box thought Pie would've had it.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
Probably
but Reimold isn’t at 100% and Pie is. Also, Pie is probably a better fielder than Reimold.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
I dont think theres any dispute that Pie is a better fielder
Its just whether Reimold’s bat that much better to sacrifice the defense
Heh, Roch thinks Reimold is certainly better in left than Pie
which is….well, there isn’t any REASONABLE dispute
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
I'd argue
that you can use that reasoning for Pie’s bat but his defense has been marveled at his entire career, which between the minors and majors is almost 900 games. Defense is defense.

Any idea how long Diamond Dave plans on leaving in Tillman?
I think Matusz had a 50 pitch limit yesterday.

"No son, Hevan is BIRDLAND."
probably similiar
I wonder how his pitch count is right now.
This just in: adorableness on the rise, family copes with child getting schooled. Film at 11. -daveh873
1-2-3 again
Either Niemann is very good or the Os aren’t quite awake yet. I’d say both.
Anyone else noticing a trend between todays game and yesterdays game?
"Daddy, is Hevan like BIRDLAND?"
"No son, Hevan is BIRDLAND."
Strasburg done
2 IP, 2 H, 2 Ks… lots of ground balls, but nothing mind blowing for the casual viewer.

Come on Moeller
catcher’s interference and a throwing error puts Crawford at third with Longo up

Who is replacing Tillman?

Why is anyone bunting?
wtf?
This just in: adorableness on the rise, family copes with child getting schooled. Film at 11. -daveh873
Exactly
and I’m a fan of bunting—but for a reason, not with no one on, no outs.
Angle bunted?
I mean he is super fast, maybe he’s trying to be one of those who does it for a hit.
This just in: adorableness on the rise, family copes with child getting schooled. Film at 11. -daveh873
Bunting to try to get an infield single is really a different situation than just trying to move runners over
Of course it is
This just in: adorableness on the rise, family copes with child getting schooled. Film at 11. -daveh873
Well, then he'd better practice
Because my ears tell me it wasn’t a very good bunt.

Yeah well, Palmer loved Burres

ACC Coach of the Year, Player of the Year!
Coach of the year is always a weird award
voters have such dramatically different criteria for deciding it
Gotta love it, very well deserved!
by BaltimoreSportsReport on Mar 9, 2010 2:18 PM EST up reply actions
I'm not saying gary williams doesnt deserve it (I think he does), but its just a funny award sometimes
It seems to be more award for the team the voters were the worst at predicting. And with recruiting being such a big part of college sports, why should the coach that was able to bring in the most talent be punished? I could also see giving it to the team that improved the most over the course of the season, but then thats yet another standard voters could be using. No one seems to know quite what the awards for.
To me recruiting seems more overrated that 'X's and "O"s coaching...
I mean Roy Williams will automatically get the blue chippers and Mike K. every year based on the brand that’s been established. Is it really to Roy’s credit he gets several of the Top 25 high schoolers every year when the UNC brand was pretty much built and maintained by Dean Smith forever ago. Does the coach at Texas A&M really have as much of a chance getting Top 10 guys as the University of Texas. So while it sounds dumb on the surface, I think its a little overrated on who goes where. After the season starts and all the rosters are set, I think whoever goes the furthest with the least deserves it, unless of course you have a totally dominant team like the UCONN women who don’t lose a game and don’t win a game by less than 30 all season. Then, unfortunately the default pretty much has to be Geno. In any case, I agree you can’t put a indelible definition on it, but alot of it is just having that feel (more ambiguity). Me on the other hand, I bow at Gary Williams feet and am a die-hard member of the ‘Fear the Turtle Bitches’ club, so I’m pleased as punch to see them get recognized.
by Wieters Wieners on Mar 9, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions
Well i think quality of program obviously has to be taken into account too
The quality of recruits the A&M coach would have to sign to be coach of the year caliber would be less than Rick Barnes would have to sign. But i think its just as important a part of being a college coach as “doing more with less.”
Actually, i think i just stated what my standard would be without realizing it
CoY: The coach that most exceeds the recent historical expectations of his program.
I concur... that seems like a reasonable standard.
Now you have to figure “recent historical expectations”.
Because MD was recruiting well in the early 2000s (when they won the championship), but last season people were calling for Gary’s head saying he couldnt recruit worth a damn.
by Wieters Wieners on Mar 9, 2010 2:44 PM EST up reply actions
I'd say last 5 years or so as a ballpark?
But it’s gonna vary from team to team, depending on what that history is, and how consistent its been.
Like I’d give Gary Williams a lot more credit than Calipari if he managed to get John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins to come to Maryland. But I’d give Calipari more credit than Roy Williams for the same recruits, since even though Kentucky has had a ton of historical success, their recent performance hasnt been close to UNC under Williams.
It still has to be year to year based though...
I mean, if Gary went out and got like 3-4 blue chippers, and they were slated in the preseason at #2, but then finished the season 14th, they still exceeded all the historical expectations (or even the 5 year window) for their program but still underperformed for the season (Xs and Os -wise, assuming no significant injuries or other anomolaes).

from our article
“The two share a special bond that has grown tighter and tighter over the years. Vasquez, who is known for his flare and competitiveness, embodies everything that Williams loves in a player. He wasn’t a 5 star McDonald’s All American coming out of high school. He was a skinny kid who not only had to deal with the challenges of learning to play ACC caliber basketball, but also had to deal with a language and cultural barrier. It was obvious from the start of his career that Vasquez yearned for the spotlight and wasn’t shy about it. He would make a spectacular play one possession and on the very next possession make a mistake that would send the fans into a frenzy. Four years later he is still making the spectacular plays and while he will still make that occasion "WTF!!!!!" play, the positive aspects of his game far outweigh the negative ones. Probably the most polarizing player I can remember to ever wear a Terps uniform, Greivis Vasquez’s journey from his freshman year to ACC Player of the Year hasn’t always been pretty. But what is undeniable is that he is the best player in the conference and he’s a Terp. Congratulations Greivis.”

I’m not sure where he hit it. Moeller stopped at 2nd.

8-3 final, and it seems like the only bright spot was Alfredo Simon, who’s not gonna make the team anyway barring something bizarre happening.

It's only spring training
but I think I can say I’m officially concerned. Of course, “concern” is sort of relative. When they drop 14 out of 16 I’ll be much more concerned than I am today. I might skip “worried” and go straight to “despondent” at that point. After all, I’ve got beer and pizza riding on their ability to win 78.
